Her chop job on my dogs tail

We have used this grooming location several times before and our dogs came back looking great. However, after this most recent visit, we are absolutely stunned. Our Bernedoodle went in looking like a beautiful mountain dog and came home looking scraggly, chopped up, and neglected. We specifically asked for a scissor trim on his feathers and light cleanup around his hind end -- that was it. Instead, they hacked off the fur on his tail and clipped him in a choppy, haphazard way with zero regard for his double coat. You can clearly see the hack job they did on his tail. It now looks like a gnarly coyote/hound tail -- nothing like his breed. When I called to ask why they would do this, the groomer (the same one he had previously) said that because he tinkled during grooming, it was somehow easier to chop all the fur off his tail rather than wash it again or call us. Are you kidding me? He likely peed because he was nervous or excited -- and their solution was to clip off his tail fur entirely? We even said, "Cut him the same as last time." That is not what happened. He is 75% Bernese Mountain Dog -- a double-coated breed -- and you do not clip down a Bernese coat unless absolutely medically necessary. It will never grow back the same. Beyond aesthetics, this kind of clip interferes with proper thermal regulation. He can no longer enjoy staying out in the snow the way he did before. We paid for an agreed-upon grooming plan and received something completely different in return. The disregard and poor judgment here are unbelievable. If there was an issue, they could have simply called us. This will take months to correct -- if it ever fully does because in many cases it NEVER GROWS BACK THE SAME!!!!!!!! We got a SWISS mountain dog coat breed for NEW ENGLAND WEATHER so he could ENJOY THE SNOW and PETSMART just removed his proper coat and proper thermal regulation to enjoy that kind of QUALITY OF LIFE because they said he... PEED. Grooming and grooming knowledge is supposed to be their specialty. Clueless decision-making at this level feels entirely inexcusable. We are beyond disappointed and absolutely DISGUSTED. This was a very stressful and traumatizing experience!!!! To update: The manager did apologize and offered me a sweater for our dog during cold weather and a refund so that was appreciated. However, this dog is now shedding profusely all over our home because his out coat is chopped down so it's caused a continual headache for us, especially after paying for the deshedding "Furminator" treatment.

I visited this location for the first time last week, and was pleasantly surprised. There was NO animal or pet food odor at all, unlike many similar stores. It all seemed nice and clean. I was there for the fish section, and the tanks were pretty clean and fish looked healthy. Their live aquarium plant selection was rather small BUT they were almost all in good condition, which is rather rare for chain store plants. Their live Betta fish were all in clean water, and also looked healthy. You can tell a lot about a location by how their Bettas look. As an ex-parakeet parent, I also looked in on theirs, and they, too, looked perky and healthy. I will definitely go again in the future, as long as the standards are being kept up.

So you can imagine over the years... we have spent thousands at this place for her daycare, puppy training class, occasional grooming, and most recently also boarded her for our recent trip for a few days when we had no family/friends available. SCREENING - standard vaccines aside (rabies, kennel cough, distemper, etc) they also requires the Canine Influenza. Even with the kennel cough vax, Juneau managed to catch it 2x when she first started (of course always during the most inconvenient times). Most likely because during her puppyhood, she attended daycare 3-4x/week! Now that she's an adult she goes about 1x/week. They called me urgently to get her but I was in meetings all day. Since I lived nearby they actually dropped her off to stop the spread. There is always risk when exposing your dog to an environment with other dogs. Several instances when Juneau returned, she had goopy eyes so who knows what she got herself into. I'm not sure if they give dogs in the same group treats for "Birthday Parties", since she's come home with diarrhea a couple of times too. LOGISTICS - They are regimented and organized. Before booking, I'd recommend looking through their website thoroughly for costs/procedures. They've itemized a list of things that could incur extra fees (i.e. midday feeding). I've seen inside only when we took puppy classes with K9East, but they have a large facility for indoor/outdoor space. Every other month they seem to send an email update with a growing list of housekeeping reminders about how to drop off/pick up the dog. They seem to have different prices and minimums depending on the time of the year for boarding plus lots of add-ons that may interest you. COST - They market themselves as "luxury" so definitely not the most frugal option. They are reliable, provide good quality care and are the closest distance wise for us. You can prepay bulk packages to get 14% off 20, or 10% off 10 to save. They raised the price from $38 to $42/day since we joined at the beginning of 2022, which isn't too bad. However, the cost of overnight boarding increased drastically from $60 to $90/night for dogs 13+ lbs! This already feels like a mid-range hotel minus the taxes. I imagine if you have a large dog you'd need to shell out for the $105+/night options. Overnight boarding includes 1 day of daycare at full price $42, so if you just book 1 night it will be a minimum of ~$130. DAYCARE - they evaluate the dogs to determine what group(s) to place them in and whether they will be a good fit. When our Barkbuster's trainer called them up apparently Juneau is often very excited and needs to be walked around the premises before being allowed to enter the playgroup. For safety they remove all collars put them back on once you pick up the pup. It's a nice feature that the GingrApp website allows them to intake client info and make reservations. They also will attach a "Report Card" with 3-6 photos (rare occasion video) and 3 descriptors for their demeanor during the day. It is disappointing when 20~30% of the photos are super blurry. I know it's hard to photograph active dogs indoors on the go! They must be super organized to be able to identify lookalikes! BOARDING - you need to individually bag each portion of your dog's meal so the staff can easily feed the dogs or a fee of $5/day bulk food will be applied. Aside from the food packing and private 4'x6' suite, there isn't a discernable difference between what happens at daycare and boarding from the report card. They lump all the pics into one and there aren't different comments for the days that get pulled in. I imagine just the last daycare demeanor gets attached. I do wonder what is the calming music they play :) for the pups. GROOMING - Juneau's received a few baths due to our own laziness. I imagine they need to use a neutral scented shampoo. I didn't love the faint scent nor feel that value outweighed doing it ourselves. One of the times they did send her home with an adorable Christmas colored bandana! EXTRA - You can spoil your dog and add a "Birthday Party" package. I missed attaching it in 2021 due to some communication confusion. 2022, I added and it looks like she probably had fun! The staff took 20 additional photos inside, but sadly they were mostly blurry :( so won't be rebuying. I always look forward to the last week in October when they have the Howl-o-Ween festivities. The first year Juneau took part she got a fun chew toy prize so not sure if she didn't stand out in 2021. Overall a great place to trust your dog with a caring team!
