Went here on business the other day. It was a little loud at first in the main area and the owner came out and offered us a private space that was quieter. That was awesome. Not sure if everyone gets that treatment. The place is beautiful inside. I started with the lobster bisque which was delicious. Perfect to dip your bread into. We got arugula salad to share. Apples cut up and cheese on top. Super delicious. For my meal I got the salmon. Really really good and super filling. I was not hungry for dinner later that evening. I will definitely be taking more guests here. read more

My husband and I really like the Metuchen Inn. On our most recent visit on a Saturday, it just so happened to be before a highly anticipated and unwanted snow storm coming by the am hours. It turned into a full and very busy restaurant night. Unfortunately, it put a strain on the service which is usually on point. Hence the 4 stars for this visit. The food was still delicious as always- 5 stars to that. Chose to eat here since it's convenient, has private parking, and my friends have a connection with the owner. Got there early and the host was very friendly. Enjoyed the conversation and being able to sit while waiting for my guests. The restaurant wasn't crowded, and was less than 10% capacity the entire 3 hours I was there. The waitress may've been new as she had to read the specials, and ran through them quickly. Since my friends were already familiar with what they ordered, I had to ask a few questions but the waitress didn't seem as knowledgeable on the menu. The food was delicious and probably the best seared salmon I've ever had on a salad! I appreciated the crunch texture but soft and juicy rare inside. Most restaurants will over cook and make it dry. The charred octopus appetizer was also delicious and much better than most with a generous proportion. The only issue I experienced was the waitress disappeared. We had to repeatedly flag someone down to refill our waters. And decided not to refill our drinks since we didn't know how long it would take. We eventually had to request our check from the host. Most of the patrons were at the bar so I'm surprised that the service was so lacking. But I suppose liquor is where the profits may be. Still, with the dining room so empty, I would have thought that the service would be better. read more

The stately old Metuchen Inn welcomed our eager party with amber incandescence on a dark and damp Friday evening, and we were efficiently shuttled to our table. A very good first sign: our server didn't bat an eyelash at my asking for our Tanqueray Martinis up with olives, mixed at a six-to-one ratio. The drinks were stellar; while Rhonda and I have taken to sipping a Manhattan preprandial, we still enjoy a Martini as a treat at a nice restaurant. Another encouraging sign: having a hard time picking out an appetizer. I was very close to ordering the Blue Point oysters on the half shell, wrestled with the mussels, but settled upon the clams with chorizo and black beans. I think there's something about a clam I'll always prefer to an oyster or a mussel, although in the former case, it's a culinary crime to say so. I love the assertive brine of a clam, on the half shell or steamed. These littlenecks were steamed to perfection, with a tasteful appointment of firm black beans and small chunks of dried chorizo. Gilding shellfish with a greasy, smoky sausage is always a pro move. Rhonda tried the lobster bisque, a dish she favors quite possibly due to serially excellent executions of the corn and crab chowder at the Knife and Fork. It was perfectly viscous, avoiding the gloopy texture you'll find at a lesser establishment, and redolent of shellfish roasted into the stock. Aaron tried the charred octopus, which I am always tempted by, but often avoid, having watched a lot of YouTube videos demonstrating how much smarter octopi are than, say, me. I tried a bite, and it was pleasingly soft, with a nice smoky chair. For entrees, I went with the sea bass after wrestling with the wild boar tenderloin. Wild boar and I have a history: on our trip in 2000 to Sienna, Italy, wild board ragù was on every menu, often served with pici pasta, a long tubular noodle expressly designed for soaking up condimento. I recently found boar on a local eatery's menu, but it had sold out before I could order the dish. I was similarly tempted by the pork osso bucco and the venison tenderloin; there is something about a chilly fall night that invites a curated meat dish, especially game. But I had sucked down my share of wine that afternoon, and future meals loomed in the horizon, so I went with the special. This was a spectacular dish: perfectly crisp skin, tender, flaky flesh, all piled atop cherry tomatoes and asparagus. Not a carb in sight. It's the kind of dish you can eat and lick clean and not feel bad about it. Rhonda went for the lamb chops, which looked fabulous. Aaron, my adventurous counterpart in all things culinary, waited to hear what I ordered before pulling the trigger on the boar. Plated tastefully around a mound of mashed sweet potatoes and a pile of asparagus, it was a sous vide masterpiece, cooked to a perfect medium rare. The service was attentive and brisk, with impeccable pacing. This all fell apart once dessert was ordered; it took a long time to come out, and we had to flag down a server to bring us our check. It had been a long day of driving, and we were keen to get back to the room for some rest. And maybe some more wine. I would go back in a heartbeat. It is, to my taste, the perfect spot to celebrate with the ones you cherish the most on a chilly night. Or any night, I imagine. read more

I'm not sure why this restaurant has the low ratings it does because the food here is divine! It's a little house looking place with a full bar and prompt service. We were attended right away and the service was great throughout our dinner. The food came out quick and the presentation was great. Overall the best thing was the taste. SO GOOD. After almost 20 years of living in Metuchen, I finally got to visit Metuchen Inn and wasn't disappointed! A few co-workers and I went for a holiday lunch and ordered a range of items. A complementary roll, hummus, EVOO, and radishes came out first which were tasty. We tried the calamari and meatballs which I thought were very good. The meatballs fell apart easily and had great flavor, as well as came with polenta which I've never tried but enjoyed. The calamari was good, but the combination of that and the orzo they had underneath made it particularly delicious. I ordered the wild mushroom fettuccine, and my co-workers ordered a variety of pasta dishes and salads which they all mostly enjoyed. The mushroom fettuccine was a 3.5/5, pretty good overall but not sure I'd order it again. I enjoyed my co-workers sausage and broccoli rabe pasta more. We also ordered creme brûlée and cheesecake, both of which are amazing. The prices and the service were great, and the restaurant was clean and felt very homey. The place is very elegant, probably much too elegant for a casual guy's night out but this is what happens when you let someone who may not get out as much pick the place. We sat at a table in the bar area where we all pretty much ordered appys and salads. My wedge salad was delicious as were the PEI Mussels in a white sauce. I ordered the fish special on multiple occasions and it's come stinky and rancid. I ordered an octopus app and that was rubbery and chewy. I called to make a reservation for the holidays and was mocked over the phone. Whoever was answering scoffed at me when I said it was for one person. He held back a laugh, as if I was less than. The restaurant was a lot more expansive than I thought and we were able to walk in on a Saturday night without a reservation (though I recommend making one to be safe). Service was friendly but it did take quite a while for our drinks to arrive, likely due to how busy they were. They start by providing fresh bread with a Mediterranean spread (hummus, olives and olive oil) which was nice. We got the crab cake as an appetizer and steak and branzino as our mains. How does The Metuchen Inn not have a higher rating on Yelp?! First off, the renovated mid-1800s building is just beautiful with tasteful and soothing decor. I loved the huge fragrant bouquet of tropical flowers next to the reservations stand. I had made a reservation on the phone a few days ahead and got a text message to confirm. We were seated immediately upon arrival at the scheduled time. Our party of four enjoyed an excellent two hour complete dinner from appetizers and entrees to drinks and desserts. The standouts of everything we ordered were the two different fish entrees, Branzino and Halibut. The salad special was also particularly tasty and fresh. The only thing I would not recommend is the eggplant rollatini appetizer. I thought the tomato sauce was much too acidic and the cheese was not really flavorful. The person in our group who ate the Crabmeat Ravioli said it was bland and needed more salt and seasoning. Background music was familiar 60s and 70s hits by easy-listening groups like The Byrds; Peter, Paul and Mary; and CS&N. I have to acknowledge all the outstanding staff and especially our server Guillermo. He was exceptionally welcoming, helpful, and gracious. Have been here multiple times over the years. They have been average or above average and overall have improved. Service is very friendly and timely. Very home like feel to the Inn. 1. Pork chop - Big portion, a bit dry inside but well done and the sauce makes up for the dryness. Delicious! 2. Mushroom ravioli - Also a bit dry inside but great sauce and plenty of mushrooms makes up for it 3. I went to a birthday party and had stuff mushroom and linguine and shrimp. The stuff mushrooms weee delicious. The sauce was perfectly seasoned. The stuffed mushrooms were tender. what should've been a nice birthday dinner for my sister turned out to be a pure disaster. While Yvonne, our waitress was very good , that is where the good ended. I ordered the steak special, asked for it to be cooked medium rare. The left side of it was well done, and the right side was almost purple. It was very tough . The entire plate was room temperature. They took it away claiming they would make another steak. They brought back the same steak cooked even more . so completely well done. I finally settled on a salad with chicken in it . It was nothing special . My sister ordered the halibut special, which also arrived cold . After they reheated it , She proceeded to eat her dinner until she found a black hair on the fish. The waitress assured us that we would get a complementary dessert. When it came time for dessert, they offered one for the two of us. We asked to speak to the manager on duty who came over and tried to apologize. He assured us he would only be charging us for the fish, and the bottle of which would be $60. I let him know that we no intention of paying for fish that had hair in it. He asked us if the hair was from a man or a woman.? does that really matter? It was a black hair and we both have blonde hair so it certainly wasn't ours. In the end, I told him we would pay for the salad that I ate plus the bottle of water and nothing more. He did give us two desserts to take home, but what should've been a nice birthday dinner turned out to be a disaster. The horrible LED blue lights around the open square space up stairs is horrifying!! The bathroom upstairs is gross. How about a coat of paint on the interior door, or just wash it. I went to this restaurant yesterday for a birthday celebration. I had the endive and Roquefort cheese salad and the crab cake as recommended by the server. Both were delicious! I took my salad home. It was the perfect balance of savory and sweet. The cracked was fresh and perfectly brown and crisp on the outside? And moist in the inside. When I asked what kind of reds were available? He listed every red possible! I had a smooth malbec. For dessert, I ordered a decaf coffee, which was very robust in its flavor. I did not have the rolls or any pastries for dessert, but the others in our group enjoyed both. The service was superb. Very professional. read more

With great ambiance and service, Metuchen Inn is a great place to go for a special night out or business dinner. The pricing is a bit high but the quality of the food and venue are worth it. I most recently came to the Metuchen inn for a business meeting. There were 8 of us and I felt we were well taken care of. Even though we were a large table, we were never made to feel rushed. For appetizers we ordered the Sicilian meatballs, grilled octopus salad and fried calamari. The Sicilian meatballs were my favorite. They were dense and in a perfect marinara sauce, served also with a side of polenta. I did not try the octopus salad but I heard it was very good and had a smoky flavor. The fried calamari was perfectly crisp and not super chewy, my one complaint is i wish there was more balsamic drizzle (it was mainly on the sides of the plate in a design) or a side of marinara, as I do not like calamari without sauce. The presentation of all the plates was beautiful. For my main course I got the Pappardelle pasta in bolognese sauce which was delicious. The pasta seemed freshly made, the sauce has a wonderful taste and perfect amount of meat. I've also hosted a bridal shower here a few years ago and they did an amazing job. The space looks a little small for a party but they worked wonders and were able to fit all of our guests comfortably while still having a gift table! I've also heard they have an upstairs which I think is used for even bigger parties. We received so many compliments after the shower. They were very accommodating and when my vegan sister in law told them she couldn't have any dairy they were sure to bring her special plates with no cheese and they remembered during dessert and brought her a dairy free sorbet to enjoy. 5/5 read more

Metuchen Inn? More like Metuchen Out! The Good: The food was good. For staters I had the the squash/ coconut soup, which was tasty. She had the arugula salad, which was fresh and good. I had the ribeye ($62) which was tender, and cooked and seasoned well. She had the mushroom fettuccine, which she said was just ok, but nothing special. Also, the staff was very nice, and the pace of food coming out of kitchen was good, too. The Bad: While the staff was nice, the service was not. I think we were expecting a nice fine dining experience, but unfortunately we came on "Wine Tasting Night" and the place was a total shit show. The staff seemed frantic through our whole dinner, running back and forth. I can't remember how many things were dropped next to our table as they ran back and forth bumping into one another; menues, silverware, etc. one napkin set on the table for 2. they first asked for drinks, however they didn't give us a cocktail menu when we sat down. Five minutes later comes the menu, drink finally comes halfway through the soup (had to be at least 25-30 minutes after first sitting down). They dropped the wrong appetizer dish on our table, meant for another, and didn't believe us when we told them the calamari was not ours. Steak served without a steak knife. Second drink took even longer than the first, but maybe because I had to ask the maitre d for it, because our waitress was MIA. The ambiance was uninspired, no music. Place looked pretty run down. Kept watching the kickplate to the kitchen door, which is all mangled and hanging on by one nail, waiting for it to fall off as it flopped back and forth. Paying the bill was pain in the ass, too. The waitress had one of those handheld credit card devices, and tells me to enter the tip. I start to type in $30, and it just completed the sale with no tip, and spits out the receipt. She says it'll be difficult to redo it, and so I wound up leaving more cash than I would have liked for a tip, because at that point I didn't want to ask for change as we just wanted to get the hell out of there and never come back. Very nice old school classy atmosphere. Was there for a business dinner on a Monday evening. Not a very busy night, which was good for our purpose. There was plenty of staff, yet service seemed to run in spurts. We would have a couple people attending to us, then long pauses. Staff were friendly. Ordered the Caesar salad to start. What we did get, was some weird like combination of Foie Gras, Raisins and what seems to be apple strudel. See included photo...It's like they were packing the foie gras and accidentally mixed it in with the Apple strudel by error and then sent it to us anyway...and they completely left out the tagliatelle Pasta Wild Mushrooms Shave Black Truffle that was supposed to come with it. So in other words, they sent us some weird combination of ingredients that we clearly didn't eat. Basically a kitchen screw up. Fine, it happens, but the clincher was their attitude about it. I called the restaurant, and the person that answered the phone was dismissive, rude, and completely clueless as to what their menu contains. He works there but doesn't know the dishes they serve/sell. He didn't know the missing item I kept mentionning, and kept insisting that we got the mushrooom Tagliatelle. He then offered to have someone drop it off. We all heard him say this. When I called back to ask when they were dropping it off, he changed his tune and said "No, you have to pick it up!" He said the restaurant was super busy, which it was, I could hear the background. But you see, the thing is, you screwed up, and clearly you think that's acceptable, as displayed with that nasty and dismissive attitude. Plus you LIED. Also, if you're SO BUSY, you don't turn on GrubHub and Uber Eats, you show your place as CLOSED because you're already overwhelmed and can't possibly handle the take out aspect at this time. The attidue we got showed us that they think that customers who order through food delivery services aren't as important as the ones who are physically present in their restaurant. I don't know if this person was the manager or the owner, but they are CLEARLY CLUELESS about proper customer service. I will definitely NEVER return here as a customer, because I am local resident and have been here before, many times. Nor will I order again from this establishment. You seem to think that you can just dismiss people and their complaints against your restaurant. Your attitude was a disgusting display of a lack of manners, and of course extremely poor customer service. As someone who has worked in the hospitality industry, in Manhattan, for several years, I can say that someone clearly dropped the ball, but instead of apologizing they chose to go with a cavalier like atttitude about the whole thing, which is clearly not acceptable. I went here with my wife, Adeline, about a month ago. Unfortunately, the AC wasn't working and it was a hot day. Definitely a forgivable issue as other places were having brown outs and other problems too. We come back tonight and the AC is still not working a month later. I'm trying to enjoy my meal but I'm drenched in sweat because its a humid, rainy night in the low 90's. This is something that shouldn't be tolerated at a local soup kitchen, much less a supposed high end establishment that feels they can charge 30 dollars for an aggressively average bolognese. They even make a point on the menu to say the bolognese is made with a mirepoix, probably to invoke feelings of luxury and sophistication. Every bolognese is made with a mirepoix! That's like putting French fries on your menu and specifying they're made with potatoes. The most ironic part is they don't even spell mirepoix correctly on their menu. Also the calamari was incredibly rubbery, like something you'd order at a Chili's. No amount of aioli and accompaniments can fix low quality squid. Safe to say I won't be returning here soon. If the AC gets repaired then maybe I'll think about it. I'll save it for a day where I think I've been too smart with my money lately and need to overspend on faux fine dining. read more

We ordered clams, calamari, meatballs and eggplant dish as appetizers. The clams had a big portion so it was shareable while there were only 2 meatballs and 2 pieces of eggplant to cut up and share. The calamari was a medium sized dish which was shareable too. I got the bolognese and it was a good size! I enjoyed it alot! They have their own parking lot & even out door seating with lights. I was here for an event recently and was dismayed by the experience. To name the positives first: the restaurant itself is warm, quaint, and inviting. The service seemed harried despite a very pedestrian pace and set menu for the evening. My fiance was served a "vegetarian" dish of shrimp scampi. The food itself was bland and unappetizing: boiling pasta at home would yield a comparable result. The staff was inattentive and overseen fighting between themselves. At one point the bartender visibly "flipped off" a waiter in full view of twenty customers. I was very puzzled at the fact that our group was generally treated as if it was inconvenient and overwhelming to have a small group of paying customers. I have only written one other Yelp review to date (which was positive) but my experience at this place moved me to speak out in dissatisfaction. Was here with my in-laws for a celebration earlier this year and was my first time here even though I live in the area. Overall I would say the quality of food here is better than most places. Although the price is a little expensive for the normal person, I'd still come back once in a while because the food is is pretty good. 3 stars I ordered octopus for my appetizer. I can smell fishiness and it was chewy. It was served over a scant amount of arugula and the quality of olive oil is not up to my par. I ordered fish special ( seared black sea-bass) Served over couscous and broccoli rabe. The serving was small. I noticed they used the same lemon sauce on my friends entrees . Someone ordered striped bass And another one ordered halibut. It's supposed to be lemon, caper, wine butter sauce but i tasted mild lemon, a lot of starch to thicken the sauce, no wine or butter taste to it. I came here for a work dinner. We stopped at the bar for drinks before being seated. The bartender was friendly and quick to take everyone's order. After being seated for our meal the servers quickly came over to make explain the menu, ask if we needed any drinks and poured water. The service throughout the evening was consistently excellent. For an appetizer I had the calamari. It was a different twist on calamari since there was no red sauce but it was excellent. The tuna and avocado salad appetizer had a great flavor, amazing texture and was beautiful to look at. No one wanted to break it open and ruin the presentation. For dinner I went with the braised short ribs. If you like ribs that melt in your mouth then this is the dinner for your. Overall a great experience. We ordered the polenta and meatball appetizer. It was tasty as expected. Unfortunately the main courses, tagliatelle bolognese and diver sea scallops were disappointing. The pasta was overcooked and sauce watery. The scallops were tough and served with vegetables that reminded us of frozen succotash (minus the lima beans). Though it was clear that we did not care for the pasta (ate only one or two bites) , our server did not ask if there was an issue with the food and was quick to process payment. This was disappointing for a restaurant we have known to be both tasty and elegant. read more
