Mediocre Mexican food served in cramped dining rooms. Plenty of parking. Felt safe in the area. Service was excellent despite the language barrier. Delicious crispy tortilla chips were served warm. The salsa tasted like the iron can it came in. Spanish coffee was terrible. I don't mind a strong drink, but this was too boozy. Like Tijuana-tourist strong. There was not enough balance of coffee and cream. Other cocktails were overpriced and amateur. Caveat emptor on anything ordered from the bar, unless one likes the whole Tijuana-tourist thing. The chili relleno was a wet mess with a soggy poblano swimming in there somewhere. I expected something more crisp when the menu indicated the poblano would be fried in an egg batter. The spinach enchiladas were encased by delicious corn tortillas, nice sauce and creamy cheese, however the spinach was lukewarm and clumpy. It reminded me of the frozen brick spinach found in the freezer section of most grocery stores. Good ground beef burrito and tacos. Not going to win any awards, mind you, just basic tasty filler. We ordered off the dinner menu. I used to come here in the 70s and 80s and remember the meals much differently - not surprising;-) Botana was fresh and cheesy The combination average. I liked the rellenos and would request them not to be smothered. Salsa fresh but the hot was not. The most disappointing was the platillo . Dry dry both the pork and beef . Ordered shrimp fajitas bc that's the closest I could get. Complementary serving of chips and salsa were delivered after I ordered. I assumed (correctly) the dish w/ the spoon was spicy. No napkins available. Waitress was actually running quite a bit back into the kitchen. Fajitas brought out sizzling. This restaurant has been in this neighborhood as long as I can remember. The dining room is nicely appointed and clean with some nice decorations throughout. Went here for lunch on a Friday afternoon. We were seated right away and the server was quick to the table for our drink order, which was Modelo Negra on tap, very nice. Ordered the flautas, soft tacos and seafood enchiladas. The meal came with free chips and salsa. The food was adequate, not great, but all were satisfied with their meals. This was a good value as lunch with drinks for 3 people was only $35.00. I would definitely recommend trying Mexican Village in Detroit. read more

Came across this place while looking for somewhere to eat in the area and the big parking lot drew me in after driving down Michigan Ave and finding no street parking in front of those restaurants. The decor of the restaurant really says someone took lots of effort to make the interior of the restaurant feel like a home. Service was sufficient as our waitress was kind but not overly attentive. We waited maybe 20 minutes or so after ordering our food and it was quite quick! Food portions were large but very tasty! They're not cheap but they are affordable and good priced for the amount of food you get. My family dines here on the regular and was happy to show me a favorite place of theirs while I was visiting from out of town. The local area is in need of a bit of clean up but it didn't feel unsafe overall. There's a large parking lot across the street from the restaurant that was easy to get in and out of. Went here recently with 4 other couples. All agreed that our dinners were some of the worst Mexican food we've ever had. The food was totally bland-no flavor whatsoever. I love Mexican food; have it every week or so, all around town. Every place I can think of is better than this restaurant. We used to eat here several times a year and it was great. It hurts me that I have to write this review after coming here for many years. Went to eat this evening . Ordered the big enchilada with ground beef, chimichangas , and a al a Cart tamale . The waitress brings out the food . Brings put a full tamale meal, we told her we ordered just one and not a meal . She nodded her head and walked away . Pictured below is the big enchilada after I ate all the cheese . When I dug into it it was filled with these chunks of meat that tasted like dog food . When the waitress came back I told her I ordered ground beef and this doesn't taste right . And she told me it's chunky meat and I said I know and I ordered ground beef . And she repeated it was chunky meat and walked away. ( Obviously english wasn't her first language ) After that they started cleaning the section with heavy potent cleaners. We asked for the bill/check and told her not to worry about boxes because everything was wrong . We went and spoke to the grey haired Caucasian manager and explained everything that happened . He told us he was sorry and he hopes we eat here again . Didn't offer any way to remedy this situation . After all of this I believe they feed me dog food and did this on purpose .... Never again will I eat here and I will tell everyone I know about this experience . I will be giving them a few days to respond respond this and then will.be contacting the FDA and the BBB . read more

I used to think that all the restaurants in Mexican Town were basically the same. It's not true. Some places are about what you would expect to find anywhere. But, Mexican Village has a big edge in quality over those places. The first indication of the quality in store is when bowls of spectacularly crispy chips are set down, along with hot and mild salsa. Free refills are also allowed. You will want to buy a bag of these to take home with you. They are far better than anything you can get at the supermarket, and better than most Mexican restaurants. I ordered chicken quesadillas, which were not what you expect. Instead of massive amounts of cheese pressed between tortillas with a few flecks of chicken, this is fresh chicken with substantial amounts of fresh peppers and onion. No cheese. Did they mess up my order? No...a traditional quesadilla has a variety of different ingredient options. This was truly outstanding. Service was amazingly quick, prices are reasonable, and it's always a treat to have a meal in such a beautiful setting. Take a close look at the bricks along the wall as you walk in. Each of the hundreds of bricks has a pattern or a picture or a name carved into or painted on it. Just one of many things to love about Mexican Village. read more

As an old time standard, it's remarkable how this place is up kept. Still very fresh and clean and friendly. It was very busy, but the waitress was still very helpful and kind. First of all, the service was phenomenal. We were seated right away and our waitress was so kind, patient and checked on us often. We started with a round of beers and the sampler appetizer platter along with the complimentary chips and salsas (1 spicy and 1 regular). The beef flautas were slightly overcooked, but tasty, the jalapeño poppers and cheese quesadilla were very tasty. The salsas were both very fresh and delicious. We then got another round of beers and the chicken and steak fajitas for 2. This came with 2 plates of sides (rice, beans, 3 tortillas each, sour cream, guac and cheese). The fajitas were cooked perfectly and meat was very tender. There wasn't a lot of flavor on the meat though. It was very basic, but also very good. I do wish there was a little more sour cream and cheese. The little ketchup cups they came in didn't hold much. The ambiance is alright, nothing special but you really can't beat the price and there is convenient free parking right across the street. Overall, I'd definitely come back and try more of their entrees since they all looked very good at the surrounding tables! read more

I love Mexican Village restaurant. I've been going there for over 30 years and it is rarely disappointed. For the longest time I always ordered the Arizona and carbonation plate. I love the deep-fried tortilla shells on the taco but everything on the combination plate is fantastic. It's been a couple years since I've been there and I went today and it didn't disappoint. I change my diet a little bit and I'm trying to eat less carbs so I got the chicken Mole. It was spectacular. They've got some new menus, but a lot of the traditional favorites are still on there. They seem to of done a little bit of updating to the restaurant too so it felt a little bit cleaner and a tiny bit more updated. The service has always been good when I bought it so I have no complaints with that either . This continues to be one of my favorite Mexican restaurants, and I certainly recommend it. I love this restaurant, it is huge, delicious Chicken burrazo, so many kid friendly options too. The staff are attentive even when busy. We went during a Wayne State graduation and we sat immediately, even with a screaming baby they were pleasant, and warm. This is an old staple that has a cult following and some die hard fans. I can see why. The service is quick and prompt and their menu really does have plenty of options so there is something for everyone when it comes to Tex-Mex.
