Stopped by on the way out to Pactola lake on a Friday for lunch. Customer service was really good. They brought out chips and salsa quickly to the table. Salsa has a good taste, not to spicy. We started with the white cheese dip! I got the chipotle burrito and my husband got the Fajitas Campenchanas. Chipotle Burrito: overall, the taste was good but, the creamy chipotle sauce on top was a little too much for me. Overwhelming you could say. The Fajitas Campenchanas was chicken, chorizo, and bacon. Going up in the hills, in the dark, in winter, with fog coming in and getting to some remote country...I didn't know what to expect. I've been wanting to stop here because I keep hearing how great it is, and it is!!! The atmosphere is very roomy and authentic Mexican. The staff is friendly and attentive, but let's talk about the food & drinks! First, you get the traditional chips and salsa.. fresh and warm, and the salsa is served in cute little carafe. I had the chicken fajitas and they were the best I've ever eaten. Not soaked in oil and the seasoning was delicious. Loved their refried beans and guacamole sides, too. I can't forget the drinks because their margaritas are perfect and the prices are so reasonable, I might have had two! This place is only about 5 miles from Rapid City and is a beautiful drive! After all the great reviews I was expecting much more. Food was average at best. My chimichanga seemed to be in a pastry shell instead of a tortilla. Not a deal-breaker but not what I prefer. My wife had shrimp fajitas. The shrimp were great by frozen, South Dakota standards. Accompanying veggies were cooked to death. They were more stewed than sautéed. And the 3 little tortilla shells wrapped in foil didn't stand a chance. They had been there long enough to melt into one. Chips were fresh but salsa bland. On the plus side, service was prompt and friendly. Exceptional! Beer was cold and margarita tasty...more positives. Not a lot of rowdy kids for this time of year. The food was great! I had a chicken chimichanga, tamale and a tostado. My husband had one of their specialities which was half of a pineapple filled with shrimp, chicken, beef and some vegetables which was served with rice and beans and cheese sauce. Chips and salsa was also good. The 12 oz margaritas were 10 oz maximum! Service was horrible. We stood by the register for at least 10 minutes before being greeted. It took another 20 minutes to order and 30 minutes to get our food. We ran out of chips and drinks and I had to go ask our waitress who was hanging out at the cash register to get us more. I understand different Family recipes Grew Up in New Mexico, I got It But had a Combo plate Relleno , Enchilada plate. First the basic meaning of Relleno is to stuff/ fill , This is just a battered Chili nothing inside no cheese. Most good Relleno's have either a homemade Red or Green sauce this was a Cheese sauce that was a mix of old can and stinking sock taste , not inviting at all. Scrapped it off The Enchilada was okay ground beef filled again zero cheese inside (okay) But again covered in the same weird taste cheese sauce Beans were plain and rice decent as removing sauce and mixing in beans made it tolerable. In all Not one ounce of real cheese anywhere on the plate other than the white cheese sauce. Service was poor. Our waitress took our orders, but a man brought out food. He tried to pass out meals, but they were not what we ordered. He insisted that they were our orders, but then decided he had brought food to the wrong table. Let me start by saying, my boyfriend and I are from Texas. We were skeptical trying a Mexican restaurant in South Dakota but, hey, it was 3 blocks from where we were staying, so why not? We were NOT disappointed. Granted, they call their queso "cheese dip" but I'll still eat it all day long. The salsa was fresh and delicious and don't even get me started on the Margarona! The food was very good but the service and cleanliness was terrible. First, we couldn't communicate with our waiter. We tried to order a beer and another waitress had to come over and explain what we wanted. Once we got our beers, we waited 20-minutes before the waiter returned to take our order and that was only because another waiter had to go find and prompt him. The menu says you will get two baskets of chips and salsa and we only received one with no one checking on us. Minor but still speaks to service. Once we received our food, our waiter didn't check on us until we were just about done with our food. When it came to paying at the counter, the overall vibe from all the people just standing around was rude. You can have great food but if your service is terrible, I have no desire to go back especially since the restaurant is far enough out of town it isn't worth the drive. In terms of cleanliness, the tile floors were covered with food/garbage. All restaurants should strive for cleanliness as it could drive people away due to first impression -- if your visible area isn't clean, what is going on in the kitchen. A simple fix would be to have the person cleaning the table to sweep around the table. It takes two seconds. Overall, great food but not worth the drive given the customer service and cleanliness of the restaurant. read more

Casa de Covid anyone? No social distancing at all, did not even try. They had a big room totally empty but crammed everyone into a smaller room. Even after we commented on it and the waitress said they would keep the two closest tables empty it did not happen, they still put people at the very next tables. Saw one couple come in, sit down, decided to move. The table was not wiped down after them and another couple sat down shortly after. No masks on staff, no gloves either. Enjoy a drive up Rimrock (west Hwy 44) to the old Fireside location. The food is the best Mexican food in Rapid City. We've been up there 4 times, and it gets busier every time we go up, which means more people are liking it. The food gets out quickly, and it is very good. We live about 5 minutes from the big chain restaurant, which we will never go back to, but we would rather drive the 25 minutes to go here, well worth it read more
