I am from San Antonio and consider myself an afficianado of taquerias having spent a year in a small town eating at many. This place is a hit -- got most everything you would want. I had the beef flautas. Came out quickly on a piping hot plate with lots of beans and salad and a nice rice. Flautas crispy and fresh and full of filling. Pretty solid dinner here! I got the chicken fajita burrito and was blown away by how perfectly cooked and well seasoned the chicken was inside! The onions and peppers were also delicious, especially mixed with the red burrito sauce poured on top of it. The guacamole was chunky but super fresh and tasted delicious as well. I wasn't a huge fan of the rice and beans though. The rice was a bit soft, like there wasn't much texture after just one or two bites of chewing. And the beans were pretty darn salty. But that burrito was phenomenal! My nephew got the loco burrito and loved it. And my mom got the chimichanga which she also enjoyed. Our waiter was friendly and attentive, filling out waters regularly while another person would refill our chips and salsa to make sure we didn't run out. Speaking of whic, the salsa had a really great flavor, a little bit of heat but not too hot where you couldn't enjoy it. I liked it! I was lucky while visiting rapid city that yelp recommended this place. Knowing nothing about what food places are popular in town I saw this mexican place and was happy to find it. The best street tacos I had in a sit down restaurant and fresh home made salsa. Wish I could bring some of this free salsa home. We came here after a long day at Mount Rushmore and exploring the black hills and it was the absolute perfect choice. We were seated quickly and service was fairly prompt. The restaurant is neat, clean and decor was very nice. We got a carne asada taco to try and the kid had a steak quesadilla meal--both very solid. But the Molcajetes was the star. AWARENESS: After doing some shopping at Ellsworth Air Force Base in Rapid City, SD. The wife and I went through the Yelp app for a local food spot to try. El Sombrero came up as the days winner. NARRATIVE: Not expecting anything fancy or even authentic in the way of Mexican food in South Dakota, I was happy to see this restaurant was no different than any other you would find on the west coast. Small tables or booth seats. Paper napkins and plates. And of course, cold Modelo beers. I asked our waiter, besides the everyday and ordinary Mexican dishes, if he recommended something unique I could try, so he asked if I ever tried "Campechanos Tacos?" When I said I had not, he placed an order for me and assured me, it would not disappoint. Besides the Campechanos taco, I order four street tacos with various meats and as an added bonus. When I checked into El Sombrero via the Yelp app, I received an offer for free Churros. The tacos were all very good but, the Campechanos taco were awesome. Besides knowing the meat used was beef, I'm not too sure how the Campechanos are prepared. SCENE: El Sombrero Mexican Restaurant is located in a one sided strip shopping area. The interior is dated and a bit dark but, the food was great and so was the service. And, they Español. EVIDENCE: Check out the pictures. We came for an early dinner and it was pretty empty so we thought we would get good service but that was not the case. Our server took our drinks then ignored us the rest of the time. We had to get her attention after waiting for twenty minutes after our drinks to tell her we were ready. She said ok give me a minute and still made us wait another 5 minutes. She finally got our order and was in such a rush. Another server brought our food out and she came when we were pretty much finished with our meal to see if we needed anything. I was so annoyed by this point because she kept walking by our table to cater to the other tables every want and need and would just ignore us. The steak wasn't that great. It was a weird flavor/texture. Guac and beans were good. I wasn't served a plate to make my fajitas on which was strange. I also got a marg. It tasted watered down and like there was sprite in it. Not a fan. The star of the show was the chips and salsa. Both were really good. Probably should have just stuck with those and would've been satisfied.
