Id probably give this place zero stars if I could. Horrible customer service! Ordered the chicken tequitos with guacamole instead of sour cream. They gave me sour cream instead, I drove home not realizing this. Called back and asked if they could switch it. However, when I arrived they would not switch it/make new ones saying the chicken tequitos only come with sour cream. Why not tell me that in the first place when I ordered or when I called tell me you couldn't switch it? A simple request. Total waste of time and completely dissatisfied. Came here for breakfast burritos. Picked up three of them (all of them were bacon, potatoes, cheese, and eggs). These were very average breakfast burritos.... place was busy and clean, quick and friendly service, large portion size, but super average burritos. Way too salty and not enough cheese, meat, etc. Way too much tortilla. Salsa bar was good and had a nice variety. I would not go back for a breakfast burrito. I would go try a different burrito given how crowded the place was at 9:45am in the morning. read more

This place is pretty good. I'm a huge fan of their rolled tacos and they do not skimp out on their guac (which is important to the taco/guac ratio). I've been eating here since I was a little girl and the flavors have always been consistent. I do not like their regular chicken tacos, they marinate their meat in a red sauce that I'm not a fan of, but if that's your style then I'm sure they are delicious also. The breakfast burritos, cane asada burritos and Cali burritos are also really good and HUGE. They are reasonably priced and food is ready quickly after ordered. read more

If you want authentic mexican food, then this is one place to get it. One thing i like about this place is if you get a flour tortilla, they give you a big whooping large pizza size and not the regular size like you would find. Since they use the same size tortilla with the burrito's which is also the same, it must be a way for them to cut down on cost but still its not a complaint, its still good. Another thing i like about this place is you can get a huge size horchata thats enough to satisfy your quench. (probably bad for you since it probably contains the same amount of calories the food you order) You can even see the people cooking behind the register as there's no wall blocking it off preventing you from seeing how things get done. Staff members are friendly even though you can tell english is their 2nd language but again who cares unless you are a racist or bias. The price is beyond reasonable as it might not have a 2 for 1 deal like they do in taco bell but then again, i would rather pay a little more for better quality. For less than 8 dollars, you can enjoy a delicious authentic meal. Overall, i would recommend people to come and eat this place read more

In the old days (10 years ago), Viejo was located closer to Rancho Santa Fe Rd. off of Encinitas Blvd. It was open 24 hours, and was a frequent location of La Costa Canyon vs Torrey Pines fights. It was also the taco shop most aligned with La Costa kids, while the San Dieguito Academy kids would swear by Rico's. It was also my introduction to the San Diego taco shop. Nowadays, they are no longer open 24 hours, and sits closer to the hub-bub of El Camino, they are still serving up the same great food. Offering the typical taco shop menu, they do everything well. Keep watch out for their weekend soup specialties. I used to live off of their Mexican Salsa burritos for b-fast, and still grab one of these eggy, salsa-y, concotions for a gut busting desayuno. Their mixed burrito is one of the best I've had. The shredded beef is just so flavorful, and I can just imagine it stewing for hours on the stove. The bean and cheese burrito is still good, although they could really work on their cheese distribution. You inevitably will get a nice mouthful of unmelted, cold cheese at some point, possibly several points, while eating it. In most cases though, you really can't go wrong. The enchiladas are well put together with a tangy enchilada sauce topping it. The rolled tacos aren't too greasy. Prices are low. Horchata is awesome. If only they could still be open 24 hours, but whatever. Cotixan and Fili's are still filling that void. Viejo for me, will be my continuing top choice for local taco shop grub. This is my go-to spot for Mexican food grab-n-go. It's been there forever, and everything has remained the same.The food is still stellar (especially the tortillas and carne asada,) and they still play soaps on the TVs. The cashiers will not kiss your feet or wipe your a** for you, but I've never gotten a wrong order, which is really all anyone should ask for. No nonsense, amazing food. read more

Food is good, but they offer terrible customer service. I had finally had it when she wanted to argue with me after she gave me an horchata when I asked for a soda. She copped an attitude & stated "that's not what you said." I have never liked horchata, would never order it, & didn't even know they had it. As always, she was rude so when I told her "you know you guys have good food but you are constantly rude here." Her response was "that's okay." She did all of this while her kids were standing there watching, so poor judgement all around. I won't spend my money somewhere being treated badly, so I let them know I wouldn't be back... WOW! FINALLY a delicious california burrito all the way through! I have yet to find a cali or carne asada burrito that doesn't give you that "what am i chewing" type of feel until finding Mexico Viejo. This place is great and is always open on holidays. Their food is cheap and they always give great service. I love the machaca burrito, california burrito and carne asada fries at Mexico Viejo. All of their tacos are great too and they have amazing hot sauce. I don't understand how anyone can go to Rico's over this place. Mexico Viejo is yet another great Mexican Restaurant in Encinitas. I swear the city had more Mexican restaurants per capita than anywhere else, but I digress... Mexico Viejo's food is much more "authentic" than the more commercial or Americanized Mexican restaurants. The chile rellenos are the best I've had, and are what I usually eat here. I can't attest to it personally, but I know many people who like the carne asada burritos here as well. The fish tacos, on the other hand, aren't the greatest. However, fish tacos are a Baja creation, and this restaurant doesn't specialize in Baja-style Mexican cuisine. I don't remember the exact hours, but they are open pretty late, so it's a good place to satisfy your late-night cravings. The inside is fairly sparse, but the prices are cheap, and most people come here for a quick meal or takeout anyway. read more

I think it is funny that people choose this place over Rico's ever, they are so close and Rico's blows this place out of the water. This place never appears too clean and the food is sub par compared to other authentic Mexican food joints. This is a great Mexican restaurant if you know your way around the menu. Certainly better than 3 1/2 stars. My favorites are the pollo asado burrito and the shrimp burrito. Don't order the California burrito (get the Carne Asada fries instead). It's pretty funny to mention Rico's in the same breath as Mexico Viejo. It's an apples to oranges comparison. I mean, I love the Justin burrito at Rico's, but Rico's is not authentic Mexican food. Just compare the clientele at these two restaurants and you'll see what I mean. read more

Wow. The adobada burrito is amazing. Nice spicy marinated pork with guacamole, then add lime and that smoky, dark red lava and it is so good! And its a whopper, a huge portion that I can split up to enjoy the next day or after that habanero burp gushes up into your throat as a reminder of what a fine burrito you had. San Diego has an abundance of good mexican restaurants and this hidden place has a fine local reputation. I don't expect any service, just authentic and spicy food. In fact, when the burrito craving strikes, I always look for an unusual first name on a hand-painted, broken sign and several landscape trucks out in the parking lot before I go in. Then if it has bad tile, a ripped or special map of Mexico and a salsa bar that looks like buckets of hot lava- I have found it! I pay these places for the cook, not the counter girl and the less words, the better. Its also great to see this guy expand to other locations and become successful. I have eaten at OSD and La Costa and had food just as good. Adobada is definitely my favorite and this is the best place I have found for a that killer burrito. Consider me a regular, local guy in a corner sweating from that salsa heat. read more
