This is weird because I ordered the pasta with chicken, which was delicious. But the last place I ordered it. It was down at the Costco and this is a different place with the same name, but not the same deals, because when you order the pasta you get the cheese bread at least that's what I thought because that's what I had at the other place with the identical name. Then I want to pick up this phone order because I like the pasta so much but really expected the cheese bread. And they said they don't serve that here. I think that that is wrong, if you have it at one place you should have it at the other place or you should let people know when they order it that they should not expect the cheese bread. I few months ago, I did not like this place and I gave it a bad review. Just returned there this weekend and a complete 180. Not sure if new manager or cook but food was outstanding. I got a shrimp diablo burrito and bean and cheese burrito. The tortillas on both burritos was warm, soft and perfectly wrapped. The bean and cheese was excellent. The Diablo was perfectly spiced and good ratio of shrimp to rice. Shrimp was also well cooked. The hot sauces were also great this time. The habanero was perfectly spiced, the medium red was a little smokey (would go well on fish taco), and the verde went perfect on the B&C burrito. Would highly recommend. My morning was going great until I walked into this taco shop. Unfortunately, my experience with the cashier--a woman wearing glasses--was very disappointing. She was rude and unfriendly, showing a clear lack of professionalism. As a female customer, I felt uncomfortable with the way I was treated. What stood out the most was the contrast in her behavior: when male customers arrived, she became noticeably friendly, smiling, laughing, and engaging with them. If you like carnitas DON'T go to the Kotijas in San Marcos (near San Elijo). They're super greasy (which isn't always a bad thing) but have zero flavor. It's really weird because all the San Marcos location needs to do is ask the other locations (Encinitas & Carlsbad) how they make their carnitas. I asked the cashier in Carlsbad why the carnitas at the San Marcos location taste so bland, she said she didn't know but that I wasn't the first person to say that! I will say this - the carne asada is dry but the bean burritos are good but usually.... and when you go out for tacos, you want carnitas or carne asada, right? (I've never had their pastor.) Anyhow, if you're in San Marcos, do yourself a favor, drive the extra 10 minutes to Carlsbad (it's right by Costco) and get your food there. read more

I'm torn on my review of this place. I've mostly get the breakfast burrito but it's really good and super cheap. Classic breakfast burrito with eggs bacon cheese potato (pretty sure it's French fries) and less than $10. One time i got a chicken burrito which was just chicken rice and cheese and i had to pay to add beans. It was good but pretty plain and expensive to keep adding things. The service however is 1 star. Every time i call to pickup a burrito the person seems confused. They always get mad when i want to sub things out or add things, which seems normal. I've asked for chipotle mayo and sometimes they give it to me and sometimes they say they don't have it. It's just very confusing. Fish tacos-battered fish is crispy and delish topings make it perfect! Beef tacos-filled with a huge amount of shredded beef with the typical topings. Menudo-one of the best I've ever had! They have a good variety of things to drink. Whether you want beer, sodas or juices, they got you covered. There's a counter of salsas and pickled carrots/jalapenos. I love those pickles! We stopped going here for a year after a horrible customer experience but thought I'd give them another shot. The cashier was very friendly, and nearly restored my confidence in them. I checked my order before I left and realized that he gave me the wrong order with rolled tacos instead of grilled fish tacos. Once I got the correct bag, then I went on my way. When I got home, my family noticed we got fried fish again. I called and the cashier, Val, who handled the situation well and advised for me to return and that he would leave a note about redoing the order. For example, the accompanying materials to the carne asada plate vary with each visit; sometimes you get a bit of pico de gallo and sometimes you don't and the same goes for the other items. It's a pretty standard SoCal taco shop with all the Norte California style fixings, including the CA burrito. I was excited to see that they offer caldo (soup) every day, including menudo, since most places seem to only offer it on the weekends. My menudo was a bowl of red broth with veal knuckle and what I assumed was tripe and had on the side- tortillas, fresh chopped oregano, onions, and chilis. The tripe was very, very soft, gelatinous and mushy; much more than I remembered. And the broth did not have hominy. So I'm wondering if I just forgot what it's like or if this is different than the menudo I had in the past. Another lady ordered the menudo at the same time and I asked her and we discovered that this version uses what is called "honeycomb" tripe, not "tripa". I didn't know the difference but she did. And after reading about it (https://www.chowhound.com/post/agony-ecstasy-menudo-honeycomb-tripe-leaf-tripe-402441), now I understand why. Pretty good lingua burrito but it comes at a whopping price of $11. Evidently the girl who took my order didn't understand English as I ordered a lingua burrito with beans and rice only. I wondered if she did understand as it appeared as if she didn't understand. During such times as this, I wish I spoke Spanish. When I got to the office and opened my burrito, it also had cilantro, and onions on it. I looked at my receipt and she rang it up as a lingua burrito with extra beans and extra rice. The quality of food at this eatery is actually pretty good. The service is spotty, I've had someone taking my order who could not have been more friendly and hospitable, and I've had someone taking my order who could not care less and just tossed back my change and order with a "here you go" (My goodness, has all businesses taken the term "thank you" out of their lexicon???) So I wish there was something between two and three stars above, it's not quite "I've had better" as the food is pretty good as I mentioned before, but it's not "A-OK". Yesterday, I get my receipt and see a $0.35 charge for a "card fee". Really? Is EVERYONE getting on this bandwagon of adding "fees" to a bill instead of just increasing your menu prices like any business model would tell you? Airlines get you to pay a fee for bags or selecting a seat, hotels get their "resort fee", restaurants are charging a 3% or 4% fee to "help pay our team members health benefits". WTF??? These costs are called "overhead", just fix your menu prices to cover this. What's next, are we getting a $0.10 fee on every check to pay the electric bill??? Sorry, Kotija, other than a few bad apples who need to learn how to smile and treat a customer the way they should, you have a pretty good operation there. But now you're gouging. Yeah, I know, $0.35 is "all it is", look at it this way - you go there twice a week over the year, that's almost $40 you've given them for their "processing fees". We decided to take a long walk and come here for a late lunch. I asked the cashier whether he preferred the birria or chicken soup, and went with his recommendation. I had the chicken soup, which was excellent. It was savory, flavorful, and perfect in this cold weather. Husband had the cabeza burrito, also at the cashier's suggestion, and he felt it to be one of the best burritos he has ever had in his life. I took a bite and tend to agree it is up there. Sweet and spice perfectly combined. So good. The cheese enchilada was melty and delicious and the sauce! Oh, Kotija Jr. mole, I love you. The chicken enchilada was stuffed with well seasoned shredded white meat. No skimping on portions here! My husband had the carne asada burrito and thoroughly enjoyed it. The carne asada was perfectly cooked and he loved the char on the meat. Some taco spots seem to braise their carne, but this was marinated and grilled to perfection. Again, sizable portions provided. Hot sauces were wonderful. Green sauce was flavorful with medium heat, while the red sauce was definitely heat-aggressive. If you love heat, go red. read more
