Behold: The Real Deal! Meyer The Hatter has been around for decades and they don't fool around. I've long admired this store - window shopping at its Mid Century storefront that really does make you feel like you've stepped back in time 50 years. They have every hat that you can imagine from classic bowlers, porkpies and fedoras (SO many varieties/fabrics/embellishments) to more modern Kangol caps. They even have good quality top hats as opposed to the more common costumey ones you'll find around town. As you might suspect, it's more of a haberdashery (though there are plenty of cloches, straw and felt floppy hats for the gals) and you know what? I don't at all mind that! Besides the impressive selection, count on stellar customer service from the moment you cross the threshold. Although we had settled on one particular hat, it was the wrong size, so many other similar options were brought out to us. But... you know how it is when you have your heart set on "the one." They looked it up on the computer (OK, so it's not totally olden days in here) and noted that another shipment was expected soon, so they took down our info. I wish my grandfather were still alive so that I could bring him here! It's all I could think about when looking at some of the 50s fedoras. Now, I can't think of better accolades to offer Meyer The Hatter than that. read more

What a fun experience! I bought a hat from Sam, the grandson of the founder. Told him what I was looking for, and he promptly disappeared into a back room. He returned with the perfect hat. Oh my, another overlooked gem that I haven't reviewed yet. If you need a hat (OK maybe not a befeathered 1890s lady's confection), this is the ONLY place to go. I know there are national upstarts in town, but you know you want to shop at a locally owned store that is staffed by a multi-generational family. My uncle replaces his straw Panama hat here every few years (and invariably tells me the same Panama hat joke). I still have my grandfather's stetson (with his initials embossed inside) that he wore into the mid 70s. You can buy a safari helmet from them or a kangol or Greek fisherman's cap ...most anything. OK these people go ABOVE and BEYOND normal customer service. They are AMAZING!!! So back during Mardi Gras 2011 I bought a beautiful black bowler here to finish out my costume. I was wearing face paint that day and have never taken the time to wipe it out of the brim. A few weeks ago my girlfriend decided to grab the bowler off my hat rack and head out for a girls night out. And lost it in a cab. So Meyer's puts a little card inside their hats that has their logo and a space for your name. Amazingly the cabbie dropped the hat at Meyer's. And Meyer's cleaned the dried face paint out of the inside brim, replaced the feathers, added a few extra complimentary feathers... and got it back to me. Can you beat that? Ever? Anywhere? I've been accused of having a big head before, and I resent that comment. However, I literally have a big ole noggin that makes it difficult to find a hat that actually fits it. The movie "So, I Married an Axe Murderer" comes to mind when I think about the size of my head when Mike Meyer's Scottish dad says "Well, that's a huge noggin. That's a virtual planetoid." about Meyer's brother, and finally yells "HEAD MOVE!". Yeah, my head is shaped similarly and it's oh so hard to find a hat that fits. Having a shaved head, I need to be particularly careful to make sure that it's shaded from the elements, so finding a hat in my advancing years has become more important. Living in the San Francisco Bay Area, I haven't come across too many stores that specialize in just hats. In previous visits to New Orleans, we've walked pass Meyer the Hatter and never gone in. This past trip, we finally decided to head in to check out their wares, and with any luck, find a hat in the process. They advertise themselves as the largest hat store in the South, and they aren't kidding. This place has hats galore. Some that are off the rack and you can actually try on right away without help, and some that are literally behind glass that the employees need to assist you to try them on. The folks at the store are very helpful, and very accommodating and helped me find hats that, drum roll, please ... FIT. I walked out with two hats that are quite fashionable and while I spent more than I would normally on a hat (they were $55 a pop) I saw them as investment pieces that I know I'll use for years to come. I also walked out with knowing what size of hat that I should buy (if I can find 'em). Customer service was great and the guy that helped us out went out of his way to try hats that would suit me, and gave great advice on how to pack and transport the hats back home. Wow, a hat store where I can find hats that'll fit my big head? And not an adjustable baseball cap? This place has been around since 1894 and it claims to be the largest hat store in the South. I believe it. The store front wasn't too big but they sure know how to maximize their space! They sell hats from all major companies like Kangol, Bailey and of course baseball caps for the Final Four while we were there. They have all variety from Fedora all the way to Cabby hats. The service was really amazing and they are all eager to help. I am surprised I can actually find a hat that fits my head! I'm not kidding, I have a really hard time finding hats that fit and this place I found quite a few! Overall one of the best stores I've been to in a while! Great service, great prices (their price was better than Amazon for the same style when I looked) and great selection! I will for sure be back when I visit again! read more

I haven't been to the Big Easy in a few years but I've been there more than a dozen times. One of the stops I always make is to see Mr. Sam. I always feel like I stand a little taller when I walk out of there with a new hat. And today being early spring I wore one of the finest straws I have on a great sunny day, and this reminded me of that trip. After helping me pick this Borsalino, Sam Meyer picked out a band that really made it happen. "Now this is a pretty sassy number" he said as he slipped it over the crown. And it is absolutely great. No reviews yet? This is an instituion and a the Souths largest hat store to boot. The Meyer family have been hatting New Orleans since the 19th century; that's a lot of hats. Gangsters and politicians (which down here are one and the same), musicians and dapper old men all know where to get that Biltmore Homburg, Stetson Uptown, and Kangol cap with fine service, you should, too. The older Meyer has been working there 60 some-odd years, that kind of time puts a little hat knowledge in a man. The younger fellow who helped me the last time I was there seemed like a Meyer too, to my untrained eye, and was really helpful...pulled out every Kangol they had waiting patiently as I examined them all in the 3 way mirror to make sure I looked as cool as I feel when hat shopping there. Prices seem about what they should be, but that can be quite alot for the nicer classic styles ($140 is common for felt, but wool is just as nice and cheaper...summertime straw is abut $100)), however, you can't be elected as a corrupt District Attorney in this town without purchasing the proper derby from Meyer, ask Eddie Jordan, he'll tell you the same. 5 stars for old time style and the best logo in town. This store actually gets me to cross Canal Street, no higher rating exists for me. read more

As I wrote in my review for Goorin Bros. Hat Shop, there are truly only two quality hat stores in New Orleans: the other being Meyer the Hatter. For the old-school dandy, Meyer the Hatter is the more preferred shop of choice. Everything about Meyer the Hatter speaks gentlemanly hat shop, from the aura itself to the employees, and to the quality of hats. Where in Goorin Bros. one is surrounded by tourists and hipster couples mocking 1920's-style hats, the crowd at Meyer the Hatter typically consists of older gentleman in suits and the typical gentlemanly shopper. This is a family-owned business celebrating its 120th anniversary, so when it comes to hats, the employees most certainly know what they are talking about. The quality of hats at Meyer the Hatter are the same, if not better than Goorin Bros., yet they are nearly half the price of the latter shop. I recently purchased a tweed Gatsby at Meyer the Hatter for $70-- the same hat that sells for $130 at Goorin Bros. Not to mention, one will nearly always find their size at Meyer the Hatter. They have tons of hats stacked in boxes with various sizes in the back of the store, compared to Goorin Bros., who only carry what is available for show at the store. I often have a difficult time finding large-sized hats at Goorin, but there are an abundance of them available at Meyer the Hatter. When I say that all hats are of equal quality to Goorin Bros., I truly mean it. Women's cloche hats are available too-- and at much more of an affordable price. As if I didn't adore this store enough, the viewing mirrors are perfect for trying on a newly desired hat. They have multiple angled mirrors, therefore one is able to see the hat in all its glory, at every angle. A historical shop and one of my favorite places to frequent in New Orleans. read more

I'm a big hat fan, and this place is golden. They're prices are standard but the selection is key. They have colors, sizes, and styles that go beyond most of what you'll find. They sell them online too. The staff is a bit pushy, but in the end they know hats. They're advice is right on, and they really are helpful (as well as hilarious). read more

I'm not a hat person, but I went into Meyer the Hatter on St. Charles Ave a couple of times with my boyfriend who is. The guy who helped him was very friendly and talked to him about quality. There were many hat try-ons when we went. Nice selection of hats in stock, but you can also place online orders through their website (which our dude was telling us). I have never been able to find a hat that my GF and I both agreed looked good on me... until we went to Meyer. From the moment we entered the crowded store, we received the friendly undivided attention of Cedric, who claimed to be the decedent of the original Meyer. Cedric was as helpful as possible, with the perfect eye for colors and size. Based on our feedback, Cedric was able to use trial and error to locate a hat that made my GF giddy with excitement. I love my hat! The hat he picked out for me cost $60, which seems reasonable for a Bailey Litefelt. read more

I like this store and I''ve bought a couple of hats here. It's crammed stock full of the usual brands (Bailey, Dobbs, Kangol, etc) and it's a family owned business staffed by members of the family, which adds that extra touch to their customer service. It could be better organized but after a couple of visits, it gets easier to find exactly what you're looking for (in terms of brands, brims, etc.). Prices are standard. I bought a Bailey's short brim felt fedora for only $60 or so. I do think their women's hats selection could be larger. I buy as many fedoras and ivys as any one who used to work a hat store would (shout out to the Village Hat Store in San Diego!), but I like a ladies Betmar as much as the next old white lady going to horse races. They do order hats from my old work though, which was really exciting. If you're coming by, bike or take the streetcar because parking is next to impossible. read more

Wow - this place is crazy! Men's hats everywhere and on every surface. There are hats hidden in the back and hats on shelves and on racks. There are even a couple of racks for women, but this is really a store for men. Michael Meyer helped hubby find EXACTLY what he was looking for and really knew his shit. You might be able to find things a tab bit cheaper online, but you don't have the chance to try them on and really see what you are getting. Both hats were shipped for a pretty low price and arrived in perfect condition. read more

Sam Meyer is 3rd generation there and his sons are working there now. Every time I visit New Orleans I head over there to buy another hat. Spring is here and how could I not make a trip to the hatter? I went in browse around, and a friendly salesman gave me a little tour. I didn't manage find the sunhat I was looking for and left shortly. A few hours later when I went back, another salesman whom I didn't recall seeing actually remembered that I came in earlier and said "Welcome back!" Boy, I was pleasantly surprised. This time, I went back to purchase the "Final Four" Addidas cap on behalf of my hubby who is getting it for a friend. When I couldn't decide which one to pick, the sweet salesman helped me out by modeling it for me! LoL He was so sweet as to give the black cap a nice brush before packing it into a paper bag for me. By the way, they are selling the "Final Four" caps $7 cheaper than the airport. :) read more

Awesome hat store! If you're looking for some classy hats, this is the place to go. I was greeted with the " The South's Largest Hat Store" and indeed it is. I forgot the employees name but as soon as i walked in he said, " Sir! you need a hat and I have exactly what you're looking for." I just went with it and ended up with the perfect hat to compliment my big ears. Overall, the staff was friendly and knowledgable. There is high energy in the store and the selection of hats are endless. From old school to new school, there is a hat for everyone. On a side note, there aren't too many hats for the ladies. Overall a very good hat store. The selection was somewhat limited in that I didn't find exactly what I was looking for. What they do have, they have alot of and it is exactly the type of store I like to shop in. Small and personal. The service was amazing. I spend a good hour trying on different hats and talking with the salesman about hats. His knowledge and skill were outstanding. I would not hesitate to buy from this store again. A great store with a wide selection of hats from all over the world! A nice French salesperson, Marcell, helped us as we walked around looking for the perfect cap. She was so interesting and such a great salesperson. It's worth going in to check out. There are photos of entertainers in the store wearing their hats. Last minute shopping for a hat for race day on Thanksgiving. A friend suggested I go here to pick out something. He said it would be less expensive as Goorin and better quality. Which it was! Within in two minutes of walking in the door I found the perfect hat to go with my coat. The staff member that helped me was extremely nice and patient with me while I tried to figure things out. I give it one star not because it doesn't have good hats, but only because it does not live up to its famous hype and most hats are extremely overpriced. I am not a hat expert, but for this store to be recommended in tourist books and pamphlets, as well as online, it scares away tourist more than it draws them in. A simple hat with a small pendant on its side, albeit elegant and stylish, ran for $130.00. There were hardly any hats that were cheaper than $100. So for me and my friend to walk in excited to buy a hat, only to leave shocked that we almost spent 1/4 of our vacation budget on a hat that had many replicas in the tourist stores on bourbon that sold for 1/5 its price. But to give it the benefit of the doubt, as it is still a famous hat store, many hat aficionados may give at least 3 stars. read more
