The greatest hat store in America. I've bought at least 6/2 for Mr. Meyer over the years every time I come to New Orleans I stop by the hat shop see the old man. He's an absolute living legend he just celebrate his 101st birthday course I stopped in wasn't looking for a hat, ended up leaving the hat. The sales guy Donald was incredible.

Went to Meyer the Hatter looking for something different. I knew what I wanted the hat to look like but had no clue where to start. Meyer the hatter had a huge selection of all types of hats from ball caps to fedoras. The man Donald took his time with me in selecting the best had all while helping out other customers. His service was really good! I asked Donald about the fit of a hat that I was going to choose, and he said "hold on, I think I know what you're looking for ". Little did I know the hat Donald chose was the exact hat I purchased. The hat was slightly more expensive than I wanted to spend but it was a really good choice. To this day I love my hat. I'd definitely go back and hope Donald can get me right again!

What a great place! I window shopped after dark while staying nearby but meet Michael my last morning. I'll be back

    Best hats in the South!

Can't recommend this place enough. This family owned hat shop has been going strong in NOLA since 1894. It's billed as The South's Largest Hat Store. And you shall receive personalized service just like hat shops in the days of old from Sam Meyer himself, now 98, soon to be 99, who still works 3 days per week! His wife Marcelle (96) stops in & his sons Paul & Michael work there. Being a hat aficionado, I have stopped here every time I've come to New Orleans. And was lucky on 3/4 occasions to speak with Sam Meyer himself. I'm fact in 2016 he suggested a "proper lady hat" for me, since I had a penchant for men's fedoras. This time I was the second (behind a man already in the shop) to buy a linen flat cap handmade in Belgium with music notes on it. Perfect for my gigs I attend & obviously for Jazz Fest which is right around the corner. Mr. Meyer was as congenial as ever & graciously posed for another photo with me. I mean, when I got photo with him at age 92 I thought it would be my last & now he's turning 99 in August. Bless him! And if you're in New Orleans get your hat HERE! You'll see the walls lined with all the famous folks who have shopped there.

A lot of great hat selections. Sales people are very knowledgeable and just generally kind and nice to talk to. I never felt pressured to buy.

Cedric was patient and attentive with my young gentleman. Allowed him to navigate and negotiate the experience to ensure that it was memorable. Both of these Jason's thank you greatly‼

If I ever come to New Orleans again (probably one and done) I'll buy another Bailey fedora from this family.

Located in the French quarter, so parking can be challenging but relatively likely to find somewhere decent. There's tons of interesting stores, street entertainment and just beauty in the buildings all around. Now for the store.. it was moderately busy but the crew were well up with the pace to answer any and all questions along with keeping premium customer service. There wasn't a patron that walked in that wasn't greeted, even when I was being rung up for my 2 hats. Speaking of hats, there is plenty of variety. Not only in style but in price points, there's something for everyone's budget. They have a good amount of mirrors in the store to prevent you from running around to see your reflection and if the hat is a keeper. I found my 2 hats quick and didnt need to convince myself it was money well spent. I knew off the bat, these hats were exactly what I was looking for. I recommend this place and the game ball goes to miss Barbara. She rung me up and seemed to have the entire store under control. Fully focused on her job and patient with all.

It's YE Gurl Says @ The Hat Loft -- A New Orleans Legacy Still Holding…read more Let me speak on it: New Orleans, baby... she ain't what she used to be. And the construction choking Royal Street? A major faux pas. Shame on whoever signed off on that chaos, because starving out small businesses in a city built on entrepreneurship, artistry, and grit is not the move. But even in the rubble of poor city planning, the real New Orleans still shines -- especially in places like The Hat Loft, one of the last-standing OGs. Back in my student days, during my broke-but-joyful New Orleans era, I used to walk by this shop dreaming of the day I could afford a real, grown-folks hat. The kind jazz musicians tip, the kind elders nod in respect at. Well guess what? Today was that day. And YE Gurl walked in ready. The Experience Monet and the team greeted us with that old-school New Orleans warmth -- the kind you can't fabricate. The kind that makes you feel like you're somebody's cousin returning home. They walked the beau and me through the history and styles of different fedoras, including those classic musician silhouettes that are practically part of the city's DNA. The Picks We landed on two beauties: Mad Dog - Winter Pine ($140) Hitman - Black ($140) One giving jazz-club potboy realness, the other giving winter suave. And because it's New Orleans -- the land of adornment -- we added feathers to each hat: Two on one hat One on the other All $6 each, and all perfectly matched to his vibe. Lagniappe (the little extra) We even got restaurant recommendations because that's what real New Orleans businesses do: they take care of you beyond the transaction. YE Gurl's Verdict I miss the friendliness, the style, the spirit of pre-beige-washing New Orleans -- but The Hat Loft, open since 1929, does not miss. It stands tall. It stands proud. And it stands as proof that the soul of this city still lives in its people, its makers, and its Black-owned institutions that have weathered nearly a century of everything. If you're in the city, don't walk -- strut -- to The Hat Loft. The culture is alive in there. The service is real. And the hats? Baby, they're a whole mood.
