Was on a mini vacation and was walking through and everyone outside was eating from this restaurant. We had already eaten, but noted that we needed to come back tomorrow to check it out; and we did! We went around 7:30 and the line was to the door. There were only three people working so it moved fairly slow. The concept is like cava; they have bowls to pick from or you can do the create your own bowl. I ordered the chicken chicken bowl, that came with double chicken, rice, hummus, corn salsa & pickled turnips. You can choose a sauce and I chose the lemon garlic. You also receive a tortilla with it, but we ordered the pita chips also. The food was very fresh, a lot of choices to choose from. I also liked that they have a junior bowl in case you don't want a full bowl. Even if I didn't get the double chicken bowl, it was enough food for two meals. Walked in around 4pm on a Monday, was never greeted and restaurant was empty. This was my first time here so I looked at the menu in advance and decided before arriving. Which is good as there was a limited menu for show and no explanation of how to order. When ordering staff seemed confused at what I was asking for - kids rice tray. Healthy and affordable option at an airport terminal!? That almost sounds too good to be true except you are able to find that here at Mezeh! I don't think they inflated their price just because it's an airport location. I like to order the build your own bowl option since it's come with a single protein of your choice and topping wise you get to be creative and add whatever you like. The place is clean and with plenty of seating even during the busy lunch hour during the weekday. Wowee wow wow! I totally dug this place. It's like Chipotle on steroids. Every component of what we ate here was perfection. From meats (we both had chicken shawarma) to veggies, to sauces, it was all top notch. I feel soooo bad for the ownership of this place with the atrocious construction that is going on all over Crystal City. Not sure why this doesn't get talked about more than Chipotle, but... It really should. The ordering process is simple; choose your base, proteins, and toppings for a great meal in a bowl. I haven't tried anything outside of my usual order, but I do "mix things up" every now and then. My usual: *BASE = white (or brown) basmati rice *PROTEIN = grilled chicken shawarma + falafel *TOPPINGS = Turkish salad (or roasted vegetables or) salad + spicy (or cilantro or classic) hummus + roasted corn + pita chips croutons Expect crazy long lines during lunchtime. The food is good, but know what you're getting into. 1. Two Menus This place has an "Online Menu," and a "QR Code Menu." You cannot order the "Online Menu" at the counter. Is it available? Yes. You just have to order whatever you want from that menu from the store... online, LOL. That said, the wait time is nearly triple. We waited the 6 minutes, but it ended up being 20, and I had to ask for the food twice. 2. Dirty We waited the 20 minutes and ate our food and not a single table was wiped down. 3/4 of the tables were dirty and covered in crumbs. There was tin foil, wrappers, and half eaten pitas lying on one table for about 10 minutes before another patron threw it away. 3. Dirty Juice Dispenser You can literally see the lines where the juice has not been removed and the dispensor not cleaned. 4. Whose Kid is on the iPad? Didn't know this was a daycare. I'm assuming someone brought their kid to work but they were sprawled out in the corner area taking up a huge section of seats blaring their iPad. I live near by Mezeh, so it's nice to have a healthy option that is walking distance. Mezeh offers you the option to build your own bowl, flatbread wrap, or pita pocket. They offer a good amount of greens, grain, and proteins to choose from, it even can be overwhelming! A safe option is chicken shawarma which is what I always get, but note: it's pretty spicy!!! If your go-to is chicken, the non-spicy option is chicken kebab. Vegetarian options are also available: veggie kefta and falafel. Add-ons for the premium meat include: shredded lamb, lamb kefta, and steak shawarma (all individually +$2). The toppings are unlimited which is also amazing! Again, pretty overwhelming but the guys behind the counter describe what's going in your bowl/what each topping is if you're unfamiliar. Super appreciate that!! I recommend trying their house drinks as well. I can't totally remember what they have, but one time the person behind the counter offered me samples which was sweet! They're all very good, but some fall under the sweeter end of the spectrum. On top of it all, it's pretty affordable without anything extra. Usually my first time visit I opt for something that is not a build your own, as I would get overwhelmed, until I get comfortable with how it goes down. I ordered the Chef's Favorite, consisting of spinach, white rice, chicken kebab, turkish salad, lebanese tabbouleh, cilantro hummus, baba ganoush, roasted eggplant, pickled onions, spicy feta dip, roasted corn, dried cranberries andtzatziki. It was pretty bad and at least one person ended up at the hospital. Both reps that sponsored the lunch also had food poisoning and this would be the only connection between our office and them. Mezeh is similar to Cava and Roti (I.e. "Chipotle for Mediterranean food"). People mostly get bowls with greens (arugula, spinach, kale, or mixed greens) and/or grains (white rice, brown rice, or a "seasonal grain"), a protein (chicken or steak shawarma, chicken kebab, shredded lamb, felafel, etc.,... or, and not really protein roasted vegetable medley), various toppings (hummus, couscous, tzaziki, roasted eggplant, olives, chickpeas, feta... there are a lot of options), and a sauce. You can also get the ingredients in a pita. The food is delicious. Comparing it to Cava and Roti, I think Mezeh has the best ingredients of them. The greens are very fresh. The rice is perfectly cooked. The proteins and toppings are bursting with flavor. I love Cava, but I think the chicken and steak at Mezeh are juicier and the toppings just a bit more flavorful. Otoh, while the differences are minimal, I find the menu at Cava slightly easier to navigate, though I can't put my finger on exactly why, I like Cava's options for "splendid greens" or "super greens" which provide a better mix than the typical salad "mixed greens" that Mezeh offers, and I appreciate the bigger selection of "grains" at Cava. Mezeh probably wins on decor with it's nice Mediterranean-inspired tile designs inside. If you like Cava and Roti, you'll almost certainly like Mezeh. In a lot of ways, though not all, it's the best of the three. If you haven't tried any of them and like Mediterranean food, definitely give this place a try! read more

For those unfamiliar, like I was, I would describe this as chipotle gone Mediterranean (but better). With a similar setup customers start with their base and then add toppings. I came here twice during a four day conference - trying the arugula, farro, brown rice (mixing and matching), you can get both a green and grain as your base. For proteins one day I tried the falafel (a bit dry, but still good) and the other the veggie Kefta. This was my first time having Kefta which is a popular moroccan street food that is lamb based. The veggie one being comprised of primarily lentils. The Kefta was AWESOME, it was not dry whatsoever and had a lot of flavor. The topping options I could talk about for a while as I think I tried nearly every one, but I'll be concise. The spicy hummus was awesome, not burn your face spicy, the harissa dip was HOT HOT HOT, caramelized eggplant was bomb, and you can never go wrong with tabouleh. I got the sauce on the side so that I could ensure dipping for that soft side pita bread. Sadly there are none of these in Boston but would certainly come back. read more

Tried this restaurant out for the first time yesterday. The food was good. The only thing I will say is that the protein portion was not a lot. I had to pay for extra for additional steak, but they were generous with the rice which I actually asked to be give less than what was actually given to me. As far as the ambiance, the restaurant was super hot, so I think they may have had issues with their AC, but if that were to be fixed, I wouldn't be against eating in.
