Mezes is hands down one of the most consistently great restaurants we have been to. The food is always cooked to perfection every single time. A big part of what makes the experience so great is Nico. His serving skills are truly outstanding. He's attentive without being intrusive, always friendly, and seems to know exactly what you need before you even ask. He always makes sure our order is perfect and well done the way we prefer it. That level of service makes such a difference when dining out. We go to Mezes once a week and have honestly never had a bad experience. Finally! It's been a while since I found a place that will actually flambé the saganaki at the table! Great start to the night and the food for sure. I took a patio table as the weather was nice and it's all covered anyways. It was packed and a little loud but not uncomfortably so. Great wine selection, some great drinks available as well. I ordered the Lamb Souvlaki dinner, it came with a side salad, potatoes and rice. Server made sure to time the arrival of all dinner components well with my salad arriving just as I finished the saganaki. Everything tasted great, lamb was cooked to my requested temp, I got unlimited tzatziki which was amazing. Great spot for Greek food! The wait for a table can be long so be prepared for that if you're going during a busy period (weekend dinner). However, once seated, the waiters are very attentive and you're never waiting on them to come to your table which is very nice. Our server was lovely and helped provided some order suggestions. The environment of the restaurant is great, stylish, yet also has a cozy feel to it. I got the pork souvlaki and shared the mixed dip appetizer. Everything tasted great! Small kría pikilía (cold assortment) dip platter: 1. tzatziki (strained yogurt, grated cucumber, garlic, olive oil, dill, lemon juice) 2. taramosalata (pale pink tangy spread of salted cured fish roe (tarama), historically using grey mullet or, more commonly, cod roe and carp roe, blended with potatoes, olive oil, lemon juice vinegar) 3. homous (hummus, cooked chickpeas, tahini (ground, toasted sesame seed paste), lemon juice, garlic, olive oil; actually a Levantine dip, not Greek) 4. melitzanosalata (roasted mashed eggplant, olive oil, garlic, lemon juice or vinegar, similar to baba ganoush, but without the tahini) 5. garlic pita bread 2. Saganaki (Greek cheese with lemon juice, flamed with brandy, tasted like kefalograviera (medium-hard cheese, nutty and less salty than kefalotyri; has a high melting point, allowing it to brown while maintaining structure, creating a thick crust)) 3. Nice! Greek Metaxa 7-star (years aged, 80 proof) brandy is so expensive (now: US$35/750mL imported, $21-32 in Greece; 1974: $7-10), they use Russian brandy for the saganaki (sad, I know! Greece inflation has varied from -4.6 (2013) to +26.6% (1974), averaging 7.8%/yr, with cumulative increase 1974-2026 of 6.75x, so a 3x increase in the price of Metaxa 7-star seems like a deal!). I mentioned to the server that the Horiatiki salad was the best I've had since living Greece! Greek restaurants where I'm from (San Diego, California) use Roma tomato, small feta crumbles (so little feta it's just "feh", not imported from Greece), no oregano, cheap olive oil. Some really good things, and some small points for improvement at Mezes. I'll start with the good - the service was good, and the food was delicious. We arrived right at open (11:00AM) which meant that there was no wait. Based on others' reviews, it does sound like it gets busier later in the day and there may be a wait. We had a larger group, so I got to try a couple items off the menu. The Small Kria Poikilia ($14) was great - we did add an extra pita ($3) as recommended by the server. My favourite dip of the four (Tzatziki, Taramosalata, Homous, and Melitzanosalata) was the Taramosalata, which was amazingly flavourful and paired great with the pita. For my main, I got the chicken souvlaki dinner ($25). The chicken souvlaki was delicious and the texture was amazing. I did wish the portion was a bit bigger - for $25, it was a single skewer. The rice portion was really big but not really necessary. The one primary issue I had with our lunch was the inconsistent temperature. It was extremely hot in the room at parts of the meal, which did come down to reasonable levels at certain times. Can't believe I haven't reviewed Mezes yet, especially since they got their new spot with a giant patio. Every time my Mom comes to town. We usually go for the House Dips (Hummus and Tappenade, Tarmosalata and such) Calamari and a main. The portions are very generous and we never leave hungry. Service is always attentive as well. Its always been consistent when have been so the food has never been an issue. The ambiance is usually a bit on the loud side, with cheese being flamed and lots of conversations fueled by wine. Not exactly a intimate first date spot but a good place for a party. Prices are a tiny bit higher than comparable Greek joints in the neighbourhood, but the varied menu and good service make up for it. read more

Went at 6:00 and were glad to snag a table! By the time we left an hour later, there was a 90-minute wait because of holiday parties. Luckily, their entire bottom floor is for people to wait, so you don't have to stay outside in the winter weather. This was highly recommended by a friend who lives in the neighbourhood and wow, it was worth all the hype. Arrived without a reservation around 6:30PM and there was already a 1 hour wait. Not a problem, we left our name and number with the hostess and walked around the area. We quickly got prompted that our table was ready at around the 45 minute mark and made our way into the restaurant. Got seated and looked over the massive menu. It's definitely a neighbourhood favourite as there seemed to be lots of locals and regulars dining here. Starting with the food first: Small Kria Poikilia (dip platter) 10/10 - Served with garlic pita. Got this to share with 2 of us and it came with 4 different dips that were all so tasty and had different flavour profiles. Highly recommend getting this to start. Kalamari 10/10 - Can never go wrong with fried kalamari. This was so fresh and portion size was great. Another great dish for sharing. Chicken Souvlaki Dinner 10/10 - Comes with a chicken souvlaki on a stick, a side salad, rice, roasted potatoes and tzatziki. Super filling and well balanced meal. The chicken souvlaki was especially delicious, tender and paired so well with the tzatziki. Since we got two sides and a souvlaki dinner, we decided to just grab one more stick of chicken souvlaki on the side and share everything for a party of 2. It was more than enough food for the both of us, even had enough for left overs. The service here is quick, but the servers are not the most chatty, friendly people ever. They just toss your dishes onto your table and walk away. Doesn't bother me though, just something I noticed. As long as service is quick and efficient, I'm okay with that! I haven't been to Mezes for years and before they moved to the current location. Personally, I like the relaxed vibe of the old location far better. The current location seems somewhat sterile in my view and way too bright. The tables are also too close to each other given you a cafeteria feeling. As far as the food, a major disappointment for me. I expected more. Ordered the pork souvlaki dinner. While the pork was tender, it wasn't earth shattering. Unfortunately, the salad was subpar with only one olive. The plate for the salad was small so the lettuce would constantly find its way to the table. I suggest plates with higher ends. The rice was tasteless and underwhelming. Anyways, not a great experience and will not go back. May as well go to a fast food Greek place and get better food at a much lower price point. read more

This review is based on my taste of danforth experience. I've walked passed this establishment a few times, but haven't had a chance to try their food until now. Their gyros are smaller than the ones at Messini, however they're more generous with their tzatziki sauce. Overall taste, I would prefer Mezes gyros over Messini. read more

We went during the week for lunch. Service was exemplary and friendly, although it did look like one waiter was doing most of the work, and two others stood around a lot. Food was delicious. Ample portions and high quality ingredients. We had the tzatziki appetizer, lamb chop and chicken souvlaki with salads. The only thing I might critique is that the lamb chops are on the smaller side, but the chicken souvlaki was a generous amount for the price. We were in the area for a show, and took the opportunity to check out this institution on the Danforth. Every time I walked by in the past , there has always been a crowd and our visit was no different. Despite having to place our name on the list, we were lucky enough to be seated within 10 minutes. We were sad to hear that they had not received any of their 'Flown from Greece' fish shipment in the last several years, as we have would've loved to start with some whitings. After some recalibration, we decided to start with the broiled tiger shrimp. Followed by the grilled kalamari dinner and mixed grill platter. The tiger shrimp was a great start, five large pieces swimming in a sauce of Parmesan and white wine. The complementary bread was perfect and soaked up the delicious broth. The grilled calamari was exactly how I liked them. Tender, fresh, with a bit of char flavor. I swiped some grilled lamb chops, and they were amazing also. First time being to the new Mezes location, and I was impressed! My friend and I sat on the patio, and it was super pretty, comfortable, and just overall a good vibe. The staff was extremely lovely and the service was fast. We shared the dip platter, which was delicious as always, and my friend had the grilled calamari as a main, while I had the baked tiger shrimp in tomato sauce & feta. We waited an hour for a table and they then attempted to seat us at an improper dinner table which was taken from the basement waiting area. The table was place right near the front entrance. Instead of accommodating large parties at their event venue down the street they decided to use quite a few of their two (2) top tables thereby displacing neighborhood regulars like us. This was the first time I joined the waitlist through Yelp. A table was immediately ready and we were seated right when we arrived 15 minutes later. Lots of choices on the menu and I finally picked the roasted lamb. The manager gave us a few recommendations for places to visit while we waited. The food was ready fairly quick. The serving size of the lamb was very generous for the price. The roast was tender, but I was looking for much more flavor. Having potatoes and rice was somewhat odd, but made for an hearty entree. I finally made it to this Greek staple on the Danforth. Cool that they have the table booking function on the Yelp app which helped. The ambience definitely strikes you as a place that opened in the late 90's-early 2000's. Though somewhat common, Moussaka still isn't always the easiest thing to find so I went with that. It didn't floor me, but it was still quite good nonetheless. My wife went with the lamb dish and on the good faith that Greek's know how to do lamb. She was really happy with it, so her faith was rewarded. I had a taste and it was really good. Earlier we had the appetizer with pita and various dips which was nice too. Just had dinner at the new location. What amazing ambience! The new location is super impressive. The menu is the same. With minor tweaks. Quality as amazing as ever. But I can't get over the vibe of the new place. The basement has a cool waiting lounge although no lounge is big enough to hold a line up at this place on a beautiful Saturday night. Oooh, they have a new mixology Cocktail menu. Sooo amazing. I think I had all the cocktails on the menu (I'm not driving...so live a little...its Saturday night!) Mezes makes me feel like I am a member of the family friend network every time I go. They were the last place we went before the second and third lockdowns in Ontario and I've enjoyed them prior to lockdown life as well - the service is always incredibly friendly and full of sincere, honest recommendations. Danforth Street is basically Toronto's Astoria Queens...literally many blocks of Greektown. I've been in the neighborhood before, but was looking for a little authentic family run joint (they really all are around here...). We found Mezes...it was clear this was a local neighborhood joint (many families with kids too..). Grilled octopus with olive oil, feta hummus, pork souvlaki, and Fix Beer (Greek brew..). The octopus can be a tricky affair, if you don't cook it long enough (usually start w a simmer to break it down so it isn't rubbery)..this was excellent. I always love coming here for the mezes. They are delicious, the perfect amount and perfectly priced. The past weekend, we went during The Taste of the Danforth and seated quickly. Ordered thru Uber Eats during COVID lockdown as the family was craving Greek and we've never tried this place before. Grilled calamari was great, wife liked that it wasn't too charred and you get a lot in the order. We also liked the brown sauce that came with it. Chicken souvlaki met sons approval. Greek salad comes with every meal. Not sure if I overlooked it but not sure it actually said that at Uber website. So I ordered a large Greek salad in addition for $17.50. A bit disappointing as the salad had a fancy name but was really no different from what you'd get a Mr. Greek or any number of food court Greek places. Couple of olives a few cherry tomatoes a whole bunch of iceberg lettuce and a decent sprinkling of feta. We got not one but TWO of the hard white stems found at the bottom of the lettuce head. Gee, thanks, that's my favourite part. Lamb chops were good size but a lot of fatty parts that you couldn't eat. You get four chops in the dinner, taste was good. Moussaka was probably the best dish of the bunch. Really meaty and tasty. Rice is solid so was garlic bread. Potatoes were a bit bland. Not sure I'd go back there were a few highlights but a number of things we ordered were just so so. We ordered enough for four people and I think it came to about $160 including delivery tax and tip. Super delicious ans authentic greek food. We tried a variety of dishes to share, and my favourites by far were the fish roe dip, kalamari, and spanakopita. We also had a delicious standard salad with feta and olives, cheese that they light on fire at your table, and buttery pita bread. Atmosphere is very welcoming and family run.
