This is a movie theater that shows new movies same as other theaters; but these are dubbed or…read moresubtitled in Spanish. It's a great find. Not many other theaters like this in Houston. Pretty neat to come across this. So if yourself, friends, or family are looking for a place to see the newest summer blockbuster in Spanish, this is the place. It's not the fanciest theater. But as I've said in other reviews about theaters, sometimes you don't need all that. Another thing I like is that it's just a few minutes drive from Houston's Chinatown area. So if your bilingual, such as myself, and have family that prefer to watch a movie in Spanish from time to time, and you also love Asian cultures and food, this is a win win situation. Watch your movie in Spanish and head down to a Hot Pot restaurant just a few minutes away right after.

It's really great that Rice can open this up to the public and it provides adequate space and comfortable seating and format for a variety of different events. It's never been too crowded, the screen is large and clear, good sound, fomfortable seats. Behind the theater there is a large common space for pre-or post movie mingling, eating and drinking. Tip: it's super easy to find free parking across University in the neighborhood and walk over!

And for the non-conformist in you, some of their films are more small-time and obscure than what you'd find at the MFA. They're hosting a few different film festivals this year, including an Asian film festival and a Latin American film festival. And they sometimes host Q and A's with the filmmakers, which brings alot of energy to the screenings. Obviously, it comes with the inherent pitfall of any art film venue.. you can see some real stinkers there. But another day, you'll catch something cool and memorable that you would never have seen anywhere else. There are a few cons: First and foremost, it's CASH ONLY and there isn't a convenient ATM nearby. Second, parking is confusing since it's on the Rice campus. And finally, there's no concession stand. There was concession stand with popcorn and candy, and sodas. It was very well maintained by the organizers. The hall itself is brilliant. Has a picnic'y, fun, open air vibe to it. The seating can be on the pre-set cushioned stairs, or on the special chairs close to the screen. Unique looking comfy individual sofa, these got full quickly so could not sit and try.... The audience was from all walks with kids, families, students, and probably the couple beside me were on a date .... basically multipurpose crowd, to get their burden off for the day and put their feet up ( literally!) and watch a family movie - it was nice. Its not exactly a theater so the lights remain on but thats ok, there were tiny tots running around so the lights on was more essential than not. Lovely and laid back. I hesitated to write about it lest it get full during the next event , but then I figured, it is in such a centric place, it WiLL get full eventuality, might as well write and get my first review badge .... Lol Looking forward to attend more events.

We bought tickets in advance for a much awaited movie. It was hard to find two seats together but…read morewe found them for a Sunday showing. Parking was easy but it was a long line to get in and the concessions were crowded too. We skipped it and went to our seats. The movie was in 3D and they gave us glasses when we gave our tickets. The movie started about 15 mins late and also cut off in the middle. They got it restarted and it finished but that was a little scary. We had good seats and the theater was clean.

Far from the feeling we received. I called earlier about a tour and was hurried off the phone because she was busy. I gave grace because I had done my research and learned it was a small staff and I am sure she was operating in multiple roles at the time. Upon arrival, as said, I did expect a more welcoming environment. Even a "Hello, welcome! Is this your first time?" With added instruction or detail on the exhibit. She walked up to us with phone in hand, told us what exhibit was being displayed, asked us to sign in and told us where to start. That's it. You are able to request a guided tour in advance or do a self paced tour. We did the self paced tour and when we had questions, we asked the lady but received very short and curt answers. She either didn't want us to be there or she didn't want to be there. Either way her lack luster customer service would make one second guess a return visit. The exhibit that was on display was Bayou City Stewards: America from our Perspective. We enjoyed seeing the art from the participants who shared pieces of their collection. My suggestion would be that the donators supplied a brief description of their pieces to include information similar to what the pieces are, where they are from, what the piece meant to them and why they chose to include that piece. It would have added value to the exhibit by giving the audience a closeness to the piece and the contributor. It could also serve as conversation starters. I will say the lack of description left it up to audience interpretation and conversation around the pieces to figure out the what and why. I do like the museum changes the exhibits often so every trip can be a different cultural experience. Admission is free and could serve as great "field trip" for families, friends, art lovers and the like. Change the greeter/worker and this place could easily be a four or five star rating. Overall, 6 out of 10.

To celebrate Pride Month, HMAAC showcased Paris is Burning in their Cinema Cafe and even had a few…read moresnacks available for us. I had watched the TV series Pose a few years ago, so was happy to learn more about the ballroom and vogue culture ascension during the 1980s. The exhibits were enthralling, especially the Bayou City Stewards: America From Our Perspective collection. There's SO much to get lost in! It's amazing to me how all of this work came from local residents. The detailed community quilt on display upstairs and all of the work in the Bert Long Gallery, especially the vanity dress that reminded me of my grandma's old dresser and the Cash Money Records 1997 poster displayed alongside a jazz poster, was a nod to how vast and diverse art can be :). I only wish there was some sort of exhibition write-ups available that provided more context to what was on view. However, I understand that this community cultural hub is solely donation-based so resources may be slim. That's all the more reason to support the gift shop! I've added the Juneteenth 101 - Popular Myths and Forgotten Facts by D.J. Norman-Cox to my growing TBR.
