The methadone was just my mrdication it was on me to do the rest of the psychological work to gain tools on how to even tie my shoes with out dope. They gave me my counselor, cara, who i cant even possible say enough about besides she is the most competent substance abuse counselor ive ever met. They do not use addicts as any treatment staff which i didnt know how id feel taking advice on how to do the hardest thing in the world (detox of heoin) when they havent been in my shoes. I appreciate the fact that they are incredibly educated and knowledgeable group of people running this program. Its nice to not have counselors that arent rough around the edges like a lot of addicts tend to be due to what we have been through, its almost a survival skill. I just cant say enough, they make sure your always comfortable on your dose and you can go up or down at any time youd like once your on a stable dose. They start you at 40 and the average dose is 100- 110. If your even slightly looking into methadone please try north charles before your at somewhere in boston and your counselor will have so many clients she/he wont ever be there for you as much as they should. 617 661 5700 call and ask for admission to the program. Good luck. -mary

I have been a client at the North Charles Clinic for over a year. The clinic while saving my life by…read moregiving me methadone is sorely lacking in administrative leadership and direction. While they have a policy that everyone is treated the same it is policy in name only. The counselers are mostly children who have no idea on how to run a group and or private meeting.I was present at one group meeting when a client went on a psychotic break in our meeting and the counseler who is supposed to be the first to know was the LAST person to realize and then to compound the problem the nurse let this person BACK into our room, after he had already threatened another client in our group. Then to put a cherry on top, when our meeting was over I go outside and...there HE is.They basically just pushed him out the door..I guess Director Dan felt safer with him outside yet what would have happened if someone said something to this person or someone walking by like a child said or did something, this person was not in his right mind,ANYTHING could of occurred. Why could he not have waited INSIDE until his ride got there?? I felt bad for this person and brought him down off the ledge myself with something called kindness which is NOT in my client description, but it IS in my description as a person..Anytime there is a problem at North Charles, management blames the State because they are a so called non-profit and are always waiting to get permission from the State.Very convenient to have a boogie man, would you not agree?? North Charles's mantra is they treat EVERYBODY the same yet reality is much different..As a client at North Charles I go to Cambridge hospital to get my daily dose of methadone. In other words I see those people EVERY DAY.Yet when it comes to getting doses to take home those people who I see everyday have ZERO input into THAT decision. It is decided by people who I have NEVER MET.Smart right?? Good management, right?? The left hand has no idea what the right hand is doing. So I, who have never ever done any drug since I entered the program get denied take home doses because of a missed meeting or some other administrative infraction that they deem important by people who do NOT know me or what I am about or what I look or feel like.Yet if we are all the same how can I have ONE submission for the right to get a take home dose in the same amount of time another person gets 5 take homes??? I was allowed to see some so called boss called Charlie about my problem.Charlie listened to me intently and asked me a few questions about my problem.Since then..crickets..No yes or no just silence which is par for the course there. It is SO obvious to me how disillusioned the staff is in these so-called upper management drones.Director Dan and this man Charlie seem to care about one thing, cashing their checks. There is no rhyme or reason to their clinic.During snowstorms its ALWAYS a shitstorm because they are awaiting word from the State, while the employees at the hospital just shake their heads and laugh at this nonsense.Computers have been down for the last 2 days, how is that possible in this day and age?? The answer from North Charles will be its NOT our fault we only rent that space..Just like everything else, its NOT their fault.Yet when I make a mistake it ALWAYS is my fault and I am made to suffer the consequences. Here is the kicker..During the snowstorm when they gave me a take home dose I looked on the bottle and it said 54 milligrams..I have NEVER EVER asked for more than 45 milligrams. When I asked my counseler she went to my record and could NOT tell me why.The answer was oh well someone made a mistake.Yes they did.But nothing happens.I get NO answers from management as to why this happened..Maybe they will blame the State,ha ha ha.So I cannot live up to their image of what an addict is supposed to do to get take homes and I do not want to or have to.Instead I am going down on my dose so I can get away from these idiots.I have never seen so much incompetence in my life and it all flows from the TOP.I have seen Director Dan look askance at clients as if HE is too good to deal with them.Well Danny boy look in the mirror because THAT is where the problem is.While I have been in treatment an addict died who was being treated there in a suicide. But there were no meetings about it,no grief counselers for people it may have affected that knew her, nothing.I guess the State would not like it.My counseler made it perfectly clear to me when she said ,Charlie you are NOT a person to them, you are a number!! Truer words were never spoken.North Charles is a good place to start your recovery, very good as long as you shut off your brain and ask NO questions, beacuse the answer is always the same, its the State's fault. With ALL that said I see a post from a woman who lives close to the clinic and in the year plus I have been there no addict has been on a nod or left a needle around or anything like that..THAT IS BULLSHIT..Plain and simple.

The Riverside therapist misread it and sent me a message assuming he was found at a hospital. I immediately alert authorities. We ran around looking at all hospitals and ultimately another therapist from Boston childrens realized they misread the alert and caused unnecessary stress to a desperate mother. Fast forward to 6 months later after he is found. We're swimming in state services and overwhelmed. Signing countless releases Riverside just added to the noise. The day of my sons 1st appointment since running away 6 months ago i get a phone call from the admin saying his insurance expired. I know his masshealth is fine. I'm at work and can't talk so I thank her to end the call. I guess she wanted more of a response in the moment because she went ahead and told the panicky therapist I had cancelled services. I had recently cancelled a different bundle of services and not this therapist it was a different service. So I get another frantic phone call from the therapist asking if I'm cancelling my sons appointment she needs to be sure that the admin had said I cancelled. I've never seen a provider get involved in hiking disputes and I've never seen a billing dept relay to a provider an appointment is cancelled if the client never canceled the appointment personally. All just disorganized and passive aggressive. In any case this therapist is because the previous therapist moved away and we had to transfer. Before she left she informed me she didn't feel my son was getting much from the services and more than once suggested we end the service. So it's not like he'll be missing much. Usually people get a referral to work with Riverside we once had a therapeutic mentor that had no clue what they were doing and causing my son distress out in the community. I'd find other services I had a very sloppy experience with Riverside

Sometimes you need context to understand the content of this program. Is it nicer than most…read morefacilities? Yes. Do they offer flatscreen televisions in the room? It's actually two. Do the tv's function correctly? That depends. Do you get a set of temu wireless headphones? Are they configured to your room? That's a leap of faith. Do you receive three meals a day prepared by a dedicated staff? Yes. Are the beds spacious? Surprisingly so. Are the rooms cleaned daily by a dutiful third party? That's a definite yes. Turn down service if you're paying attention in the afternoon and they are quietly dedicated to removing an almost insurmountable amount of detritus. The kitchen and the cleaning staff are the backbone of Hillside. Will you be able to use your beloved cellphone? Last I heard this was still in place. Do I think it's necessary for people on a detox unit to have access to the outside world? Your mileage may vary. Is the staff caring? For the most part. Are there some people who seem to just exist? In my head there are. Do you form a bond with people who overlap your 28 to 32 days in recovery? If you're human and doing it correctly you try. Mostly though you realize that almost everyone is going to fall and that day trips outside of the protective walls are mostly fantasy. This applies to all facilities and programs. It's like Verizon telling you they'll give you a new phone for free and you'll save money doing it. That's not how profitable businesses work. Does Hillside occasionally catch lightning in a bottle? Yep. When it happens four out of five dentists will say you're fucking nuts, but it does actually happen. Well how about the nursing staff? Let's put it this way. I would let any of them borrow my truck for the weekend and bank on the fact that it comes back clean and with a topped off tank. Follow the golden rule and you'll be able to figure out the rest. Most of their days are filled with unending lines and acute muscle memory. If they look like they're in an another place they're probably dreaming about a beach without people. They are some of the nicest, most professional people I have had the privilege to meet and they come from all walks of life. Now we get to the staff. People who work the floor can vary widely. Some of them you immediately gravitate towards and some of them you keep at arms length. The overnight shift is the most underrated group because they're trying to make sure people are sleeping without waking them. If you happen to catch them with their eyes closed there's generally someone nearby taking a rotation. It's teamwork out of necessity and most of them are either dedicated to the program or younger kids trying to work two jobs. The clinical staff and those who run regularly scheduled weekly groups are hit or miss. This is where content and context are relevant. If you're relating to the individual then you are in luck. I don't care if it's meeting based, rehab pottery or you're listening to that one peculiar weirdo who loves PowerPoint and the brain. If you're learning something it's relevant, if you're enjoying something it's relevant and if you're relating to something it's therapeutic. I won't single out any particular weekly meeting that I think is unnecessary, even the "Hunger Games" meeting where everyone puts forth a wishlist of various items is lowkey hilarious. I have had three very specific requests during my time there. Raisins (no one eats raisins), skinny pop (because I'm fancy) and hand soap in the men's residential bathroom. I don't know if this is gender specific, but body wash and hand soap are not one and the same. I'm currently 0-3, but I will be taking notes when I come back for a commitment meeting. Sorry ladies, boys are gross. I'm still surprised no one else has noticed this. If you've made it this far you're either one of ten current users who turn to Yelp! when seeking out information or you're Tyreek. I'm definitely not spelling that correctly, but here is your honest, no rush assessment of the program and the staff. Feel free to copy and paste. Would I send a loved one here? Yeah, but it still comes down to context and content. I have eternal gratitude for Hillside. It's not perfect, it's occasionally held together by gumption and duct tape and the second elevator might as well be turned into a "safe space for people who love out of order people movers" but at the end of the day they make it work and that has nothing to do with the amenities and everything to do with the spirit of the program.
