MGM is my local wine and liquor store. I am surprised that I have not written a review yet. This place is solid - not the most exotic selection, but they have an expansive beer and bourbon selection. Wine selection is pretty good, but missing a lot of my favorite vineyards. All of that said, I come here a lot to pick up whatever for a dinner party or a backyard BBQ or a holiday get together. While I often can't find my absolute favorite whatever, I can find a little bit of everything. Also, the staff here are nice and helpful, too. read more

Fairly big store is a plus. Prices are average. But one thing I count on in this store being open full hours while some other neighborhood places might be more willy nilly with hours. Well, I busted my behind to get here before they closed super bowl sunday because we were running low. Got there in the nick of time. I thought! But at 4 minutes to 6 the cashier had locked the doors, I saw cash drawer out, counting down. Weak sauce. Will keep that in mind making my next liquor purchase. read more

And don't be so rude about saying you're closed thru the locked door. the gal that was there Sunday night at 5:51pm when I came up to the door yelled at me, like I was in the wrong for wanting to come in. 90% of the time I come here the workers seem like they hate their job, but I let it go cuz it's the only place around that carries a specific brand I use. Just your classic liquor store, great selection of beer, wine, liquor etc. it's pretty cheap and a decent selection of local items. They have some great michelob golden deals and that's my personal favorite. Staff is decent, never had any complaints or compliments which is pretty much what I'm looking for at the liquor store. We needed something to go with the sausages I was cooking for dinner and found a nice Spanish red that was perfect. Oh, and a case of Asahi because yes, why not. Prices are okay. About what I would expect from a liquor store with high rent. The cashier who rang up our sale was pleasant. Note that there is generally a homeless-challenged person in the lot so be prepared. This MGM has anything you may need. Everything nicely spaced out, it's not one of those MGM's that's tiny and have all the isles crammed with displays. Also if you're into to higher end stuff make sure to check out the glassed off allocated whiskies. read more

I'm giving this rating only because they didn't have what I was seeking. The lady who asked if she could help was very nice. I was in the store for only about 5 minutes after learning that they don't have the product I came to purchase. I have usually found what I've sought out here, so I was surprised to not find it. First time ever in the store - I was chasing the Surly Darkness variants, and after striking out at two previous places, got lucky here. That's four stars. The added one was the staff person who randomly walked by, saw what I was buying, and pointed me to other options that were local hard to finds that they had. It is not often you get great service in a liquor store. The rest of the beer selection was great as well - lots of variety, and some rare items I have not seen around other places nearby. Good selection of beer and liquor, but the prices are a little on the high side. Maker's Mark 46 was 45 bucks, while at another liquor store down the street, it was a shade under $32. Beer also $1-2 more than elsewhere. Guess the Whole Foods next door rubbed off on MGM. read more

Today I stopped at Henn Lake for a few bottles of wine. But I forgot the sake which I needed for a recipe so I walked over to MGM b/c it's closer. While there I checked the prices on the bottles I bought earlier at Henn Lake just to compare. Bogle Petite Syrah (2008): Henn Lake = $8.99 MGM = $12.99 That's 44% more expensive at MGM. Joel Gott Zinfandel (2008): Henn Lake = $12.99 MGM = $18.99 That's 46% more expensive at MGM. True, Henn Lake doesn't take plastic. But is that really worth a 45% price increase? I'm pretty sure the credit card transaction fee is 2-3%. So what gives MGM? read more

Picture it, I come in with a Whole Foods grocery cart full of groceries and my kid in the cart. (MGM has moved right next door to make yuppie one-stop shopping easier). I'm instructed of their "bag policy" (I've written about this before), and I'm told that I can't enter the store without them. Ok, can I park the WF cart in a corner on the side and move the kid to an MGM cart? No. Can't keep the WF cart there. Need to unload all groceries and kid, move said groceries (with kid in tow somehow) to far corner and then put kid in an MGM cart." I'm so f-ing pissed at this point, because once again, I'm being treated like a shoplifter and as though I should have 10 arms or something, I say to the "Why don't you just take my bags out, and put them where you want them to be? I've got a god damned kid here and I'm certainly not going to leave her alone in the cart while I shlep my shit around your store." He was a little taken aback and a little pissed off, but he did it. I think sometimes get so attached to "the rules" common sense gets lost. This place is ridiculous. Awful, just awful! They are so conveniently located, right next door to Whole Foods, so we just stop in there after shopping to pick up a bottle or two of wine for the week. We patronize(d) their store almost weekly, and we don't buy cheap wine either, so in my opinion, we WERE pretty good customers of theirs. We stopped in today to buy a bottle of wine, we got to the register and the guy who was working asked for both our id's (my husband and me). I showed mine (we're in our mid 40's BTW so there's really no doubt we're of age) and was paying for the purchase. Unfortunately my husband left his at home. The employee then proceeded to tell him he wasn't even supposed to be in the store if he's under 21 or doesn't have ID so to get out. He wouldn't sell me the bottle b/c my husband didn't have ID. All of this interaction went on with no eye contact, an incredibly rude and condescending tone and completely dismissive as if we were just an annoyance in his day. He told us to go get his ID and then come back if we wanted. Are you kidding?? Not only will we not come back with ID to make the purchase, we will NEVER step foot in that store or spend $1 of our money there again. If they see fit to treat their customers with such indifference and disgust they don't deserve my business or my time. So long MGM...on to better liquor stores like North Loop Wine & Spirits. read more

One employee in the parking lot talking about how the virus isn't serious because it only killed 13% of Italians (tens of thousands of people), employee at the register made me take of my mask to check ID. I like MGM because it is conveniently located a couple blocks from my father's house and they have some pretty good deals. Around Christmas time I was able to purchase Bailey's and send in a voucher for $5 off, which made it hella cheap. They also had someone giving free samples of the different flavors. I might have passed up regular Bailey's, but I couldn't say no to the caramel. The last three times I've noticed they do a lot of sampling and have very pleasant girls who distribute the beverages. This is the perfect company model for anyone trying to target men like my father, who like to sip alcohol and talk to gorgeous girls around my age. A little creepy, but quite harmless. It provides me with entertainment and he gets an ego boost. It's win-win. read more

Appalling service, do NOT go here unless you want to be racially profiled by some 30 year old white man with a beard that reeks of his mother's basement. I was followed and stared at by the male employee the entire time I was in the store and when I reached the register he barely glanced at my ID before telling me to leave the store. As a 23 year old woman I understand that I look young, but when I am denied service, despite having a VALID drivers license and other forms of ID that he refused to look at, after being harassed throughout the store, it's safe to say that the disrespect is deeper than that. I came here for emergency wine for this impending blizzard we're about to have. And I learned in MGM that this cold, snowy winter has done one thing - turned me into a wine snob. *hangs head in shame* I don't want Kendall Jackson, Clos du Bois, Cupcake, Fancy Pants or Fifty Shades of Gray wine. Sadly, all of these (and more terrible options) were HEAVILY featured all through out the store. And, yelp has confirmed what I thought the whole time I was in this store: everything is REALLY REALLY REALLY overpriced here. Much like its next door neighbor (Whole Foods) I can find a lot of things elsewhere but they are more expensive here. Big bright store. Convenient location (right next to Whole Foods and Lake Calhoun). Amazingly-fantastical-super-duper beer selection. Prices are average. Wine/other liquor selection is adequate. Sales staff isn't overly welcoming - but they aren't rude either. Then I called MGM because I was going to be near there. They would not provide a price over the phone, and they would not price match. When I got to the store I found out why: $30.99. Compared to other liquor stores I have visited in Uptown area, this beats them all. However, prices are higher. I just like that it has a good selection, wine prices aren't as high as competition and takes credit cards. Very big and bright store, with a great selcetion. Unless you're buying cheap crap beer, it doesn't pay to go to the smaller liquor stores to try and find anything. This place has a huge selection of foreign beers and wines. Always in stock. Plus it's conveniently located right next to Whole Foods. Food & beer (the kind you really wanted), all in one quick stop. Parking kinda sucks sometimes when it's busy in that area, but wait a minute and somebody's pulling out. read more

Sad, sad place.... Worst service in town. Unless the staff is working for free they couldn't be more apathetic. Prices are quite high and I would be fine with that, if there was an ounce of service to go with it. You can easily spend 30 minutes by the lock and key drink selection and nobody would bother to assist you. If you buy a dozen bottles of wine, and by chance even one of them is on sale (as little as a $1), you can't get the 10% discount. That would all be fine and good if the brilliant staff would point that out while you're at the check-out, but no such luck. Sadly, I've shopped there many times and one thing I must give them credit for; is that they are very consistent. It's bad every time. The location is so convenient and that's just so frustrating, because I would love to shop somewhere else. I think the current owner could do the world a favor and sell the place to someone who cares. read more

After reading a couple of negative reviews, I almost decided not even to go to this place. After a nice run around the Lake i figured lets give this place a whirl. To my astonishment this place is not less than perfect! Any beer I ever imagined was here. Products I had only heard of were neatly organized on the shelf by country and style. I was astonished by the endless wine selection, Holy Smokes! Everything from a 400 dollar bottle of Paulliac to a 5 dollar bottle of "Crane Lake." After tonights visit, I know this much, MGM in Minneapolis is my one stop shop from here on out. I am glad I went in there tonight. Keep up the Awesome work guys you were so helpful and friendly, you made me feel like I had been a long time regular. As for those two previos reviews, did you go somewhere else?
