Mi Tierra is a nice spot to stop in Sarasota to sample Cuban and Colombian food. The staff are very friendly and eager to please. The Cuban Sandwich was huge and very satisfying! I got a side of rice and beans, which could easily have been my entree by itself! Very generous portions! My wife ordered the Churrasco and absolutely loved it. It came with a salad and rice and beans. I would definitely stop by again. Nice, "homey" atmosphere decked out for the holidays meets your eye upon entering. Very kind wait staff for this gringo! I try, but my Spanish is embarrassing. I love the old train car look also! Small, but very nice inside. Now, the food... I had to try a beef empanada ($1.50!!) and ordered the Churrasco. Incredible! I'll get at least two meals out of what they brought me. I couldn't get over their prices. This same meal would have cost me at least 25-30% more at my favorite place back in Louisville. Only in Sarasota a short time but I'll visit again. read more

I was craving Colombian food and decided to try out "Mi Tierra" - I loved their food. I ordered Palomilla! The sauteed onions were delicious and the meat was so thin - just the way that I like it. The red beans complemented the rest of the meal. I had to get my apple soda. Beatriz and Claudia ( I believe - forgive me if I'm wrong ) were very nice to me and attentve. In good family tradition, if we are on the beach, we're gonna look for some seafood to EAT. Hence the big ole fried fish my mom got. I got sopa de mondongo (it was a TONNN) aka tripe soup (get outta here with your judgements my friends!) Everything was fresh, fried fish was crispyyy. I found this "hidden gem" leaving work one day at 5:30pm and craving some red meat. It was a few minutes away from my last job and after reading some reviews here and decided to give it a try. They are located on a corner and reassemble a train cart. Their menu has a bit of everything (steak, chicken, fish, salads) all latin dishes. I had the churrasco, my plate came well served and the steak came on a sizzling plate (like some Mexican dishes). It was well prepared and the steak was the way I ordered. The skirt steak, shrimp and chorizo meals were GREAT. I can say the service is not good at all. If you are a family with young kids I would not recommend it because the wait is very long. We ordered a corn dog for our daughter and it came out 10 minutes after everyone else's food. The dessert was not good either. It doesn't seem like they are prepared there. read more

The Churrasco here is a solid 5 stars. I am a fanatic when it comes to steak and I "only" eat filet and typically Prime only. I would never eat skirt steak. EVER! That was until yesterday. My son took me here and made me order the Churrasco. I am forever changed. In fact, if you gave me the option of a Ruth's Chris Filet I would prefer the Churrasco with Chimichurro and Salsa at MI Tierra. It was incredible. I took some stars off because it's not a pretty place. But the food was undeniably incredible. A solid 5 stars. Great prices for the amount of food. I am not a meat eater but I will gladly partake in have the Pollo al la plancha (chicken), Bandeja Paisa (steak) all day long. It's worth a just a bite- believe me you'll be happy you did. Queso empanada is on point. Service: it can be difficult to reach them over the phone. Sometimes you have to call a couple times in a row to get an answer. But the food will make it worth it- trust ya girl. I think the staff we've spoken with over the phone has limited English...so keep that in mind. Atmosphere: While I've never dined in, I have gone inside to pick up the food. Mi Tierra is definitely aesthetically intimidating with the tinted windows and the rustic exterior. However, inside is a sort of oasis. The same waiter is always here, and he is very professional and fast. The chilled container of Aji sauce is readily available on the table, which makes the food even more delicious. The rice is perfectly salty-chewy-buttery and the beans are creamy and rich. To me, the quality of the meat is not the best that I have ever had. There are often hard-to-chew bits and sometimes lacking in seasoning. Most items are available a la carte, but the main portion of the menu is large platters of food ranging from $11-13. Not cheap at all. When you order, make sure to read the menu clearly as to what items come with your large platter. I have found that often items are missing from my plate. There are many platter dishes that I have not seen before on menus, such as Creole variations of meat platters with special tomato based sauces. There are at least eight different fruit shakes to choose from, available with or without milk. My main complaint about the food is that the fryer oil tasted rancid to me. Therefore, anything that is fried in the oil tastes rancid as well. Also, sometimes you will order a specific dish and then given something else. So make sure that if you are speaking Spanish that you are speaking very clearly. Due to the fact that the Bradenton and Sarasota areas are seriously lacking in Latin American food options (especially Columbian), I should not be too picky. read more

I think the food is great and a great value -- if you know what to order. It was my first time there and, although I am familiar with and love a lot of Cuban dishes, I didn't recognize any of the items on the menu except one. I opted for a Cuban sandwich, which seemed like a plain if unadventurous choice. I have had many Cuban sandwiches over the years and this was the absolute worst I have ever had. Ham from a can or cold cut package, some cheese, pickles and yellow mustard -- all the normal ingredients, but just bleah. The bread also was not the good, flaky bread you need for a good Cuban sandwich and it was warmed but not pressed. I'd definitely go back after doing a bit of research on good Colombian meals like the ones ordered by people at tables near me. I will say it was cheap, under $10. Mi Tierra on 301 is my favorite restaurant in Sarasota. Even though it's in an old diner and smells kinda weird. The Colombian and Cuban people who work there are very very sweet. They accommodate English-speakers, Spanish-speakers, and Spanglish-speakers like me. Why is Mi Tierra my favorite? #1 - The sauce in the little silver or plastic jars on the tables. It is like a fermented hot sauce with lots of garlic and cilantro. IT IS DELICIOUS. I put it all over my meal. I usually use a whole jar. It is medicinal. #2 - The batidos. Batidos are like milkshakes with exotic tropical fruits such as mamey, guava, lulo, guayaba, papaya, mango and others. You can get them with milk for a rich, creamy treat or with just ice for a healthier, vegan version. I LOVE the MAMEY omg omg omg I DO! Also it's the only spot in Sarasota you can get mamey-anything. #3 - The mojarra dish with yucca and plantains. Mojarra is a whole fish. This is a BIG meal of EXCELLENT value. If you wanna make it a little healthier, get the yucca boiled instead of fried. Also, this place is open on Sundays, which is rare in Sarasota. It isn't pretty and it isn't upscale, but the Yelp! photos of the food DO NOT do it proper justice. It is genuine and someone in the kitchen had a bit of that extra touch or gift with sabor that makes the food a small notch above most other Columbian places I know from here to Boston. The place is far from our home, therefore we are only visit once or twice per year. After many many years it has always been so reliable every time that I would go more often if we lived closer. We shred up the Chicharron into the beans. While the Carbon at the top of the entrees is reliable, it is some of their pork dishes that always surprise me year after year. If I could leave ZERO stars I would. I usually give places 3 strikes before I stop going - everyone has bad days, but this one: they wracked up all 3+ strikes in one visit. Terrible food, terrible service, the place was FILTY and it was simply not worth the price. I had a Cuban Sandwich and a side Maduros (fried sweet bananas) to go. It was $14. There was SO LITTLE meat on the sandwich, the value of it was probably $2. It has perhaps 1 oz of OLD & DRY meat,, the bread was stale... and I waited 20 minutes for it. While I waited, I looked to see who else was waiting for food: no one. Everyone in the place had their food. I put all the filling on one side of the sandwich and ate about half of that....then threw it away. I didn't trust it. Turns out I was right not to. Later in the day I was nauseated and had gastrointestinal issues. The sandwich was the ONLY thing I had eaten that day. read more
