Just terrible I travels all across the country and visit a few Va this one by far the worst it's extremely slow unorganized it's not even as packed as the ones I have seen and still under performs everything closes at 3 pm which further tickles my soul . For my first appointment I was asked to reschedule 2 times taking me a total of 2 months to even get seen and the provider rushed me through not even getting down all the issues I have and schedule me 2 months out to be seen again like what is going on here read more

I come with my dad often for his care with his specialist. He seems to always have great care as far as the specialist itself. Now the office workers (check in / check out) staff depends on the department and be rough and somewhat rude. Parking outside seems limited as well. Overall it's ok, but we rather go to the Broward Va clinic for most of the care. read more

Most medical facilities get a bad rap, because unlike a coffee shop or hot new bar, you're going there because you have to deal with some potentially serious medical procedure and not a latte or a beer. Along with that is the complications of our healthcare system and the medical-industrial complex and a host of other issues. VA in specific maybe even has more red tape given that it's a government-run facility. All issues considered, they still should hold themselves to some sort of higher standard than the complacency which runs rampant. They are still providing a service, a very important one that everyone will at some point need, and their employees are still getting paid and should be at the very least be able to provide a level of care and human decency--that doesn't change regardless of the budget. Most of the staff I've had to deal with here, just doesn't seem to care at all about anyone. And I definitely understand it's just a job for them, that they aren't saints, but they are still providing a sort of costumer service, even if they aren't working for tips. While it is great that veterans have a place for free and reduced cost medical services, It's still sad that the men & women who served our country have to settle for such treatment. The medical system as a whole has issues that won't be taken care of with a simple fix, but if the right people are in charge and holding people accountable; I think they can all take steps toward improvement. read more

My daughter is a young vet, recently scheduled for surgery at the VA Hospital in Miami. I was absolutely blown away by the professionalism of the entire staff from the moment we walked in to the moment she was released. Everyone from the professional staff to the support staff was eager to help and went out of their way to ensure my daughter was comfortable and informed, but it didn't stop with her. That incredible attention extended to me and her wife throughout our time there. Honestly, as my daughter was wheeled into surgery, there was staff that came to me and my daughter-in-law to help us understand the food and beverage options in detail, we were stopped numerous times in the hallways by staff asking if we needed directions....it was the best experience any of us could have imagined. My elderly father had open heart surgery from the beginning to the end many up and downs the night shift nurses were very on helpful, when asked to be covered with more blankets one of them threw the blanket at him, when asked to watch the video footage of the camera in the room they said the cameras do not work, the room was very dirty when I went to visit had to tell them several times to mop and change the bed sheets, The hot water does not work in the building, so he could barely take baths. When asked to be moved to a different hospital, they said yes to find his in way there and they would not help him, I would call to check on my father and they would say call his cell phone, lll said im calling to speak to you to see how's he's doing and we're very on professional. Don't even waste your time going to this place (or to the Sunrise VA Clinic out in Sunrise either). The service here is an absolute joke, the staff talks down to you like your bothering them or like they could care less about why you are there or if you have legitimate questions that need answering(apparently there are more pressing matters on their personal Cell phones to attend to). You are better off going to the ER at a County Hospital or bleeding out in the streets of Miami or Fort Lauderdale than putting your health & safety in the hands of the Miami VA. I've had to come here for several reasons now in various departments and while the service is quick (where I went and on those days) there has to be something better for the people that has served this country. For one the hospital itself can use a facelift all around. I've gone to other VA locations for other reasons that didn't pertain to me and the hospitals are immaculate. So to me it's Miami Dade that isn't taking care of what they need to. If you travel just a little north, the location on Commercial looks completely different. don't know where the budget is going but it certainly isn't going to the veterans. You practically have to play dead just to get any type of assistance out of them. A few years back I had to visit a friend that was admitted due to his sickle cell, just to see him in a closet of a hospital room. I I know from experience someone that is supposed to receive psychological treatment on a weekly basis but is allowed to come at their leisure. I understand that they deal with people from all walks of life. However the very people that you are intimidated by could be doing harm on the outside. Scared doctors shouldn't be treating doctors. In short, I considered making a VA physician my primary physician but I think I will go forego that idea and stick with my private primary care physician. Went to the ER with serious stomach pains. The healthcare staff were all nice and attentive. Come to find out I needed my appendix removed. They scheduled that same day, completed the surgery with no issues or complications. I stayed overnight and the nurses and doctors maintained regular checkups. The discharge process was a little slow and inefficient but that would be my only constructive review. Also they could improve food options and provide more nutritious options. If I had to be treated again, I would have no problem revisiting the Miami VA Hospital. read more

This hospital has been my hospital since I got out of the Marine Corps. I've always been taken care but unfortunately the one star is because of the front desk lady that gave me an attitude when I tried to check in along with two other veterans who tried to get help. I understand these clerks deal with a lot of vets but there are better ways to treat people. I was sick as a dog trying to get assistance and she kept asking me the same questions about my symptoms as if I were lying with a nasty attitude. We served this country honorably and this not the way to treat our veterans. Every time I walk into this hospital it's depressing. I see veterans being abandoned waiting without a nurse or anyone on sight to check if they're alright. We definitely need to do better for our vets it's depressing to see how some of these guys are treated after giving everything they have to this country. read more

A VIOLATION OF MY CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS!!!! The weirdest thing happened to me in the Miami VA Hospital Right now. I came to the Miami Veterans Hospital at 8 pm. Got placed in the bed in the ER by 8:30 and IV was given to me at around 9pm I passed out around 9 ish with out any recollection. The bag was 1000 ml and full the Drip in the bag was very slow. I didn't need fluids it was just to keep the line open because I have gotten an IV. I wake up and hour and half later with the bag empty and a doctor is starts asking me questions. I vaguely answer on purpose and she said there was nothing wrong with me. They had taken the phones from me and as I went back to them noticed the phones were not in the same location where I left them After noticing the whole deal I called my brother because they were going to discharge me and he said you were only there for a few hours. I think I was drugged up and interrogated. The whole staff had change too. This has to be the biggest violation of personal space I can think of. Any lawyers want to take the case. I don't know how long the drug stays in my blood screen but now that I think about it I might if Gad a similar experience before. I don't think the staff were cool with it. I could tell. PROs Miami VA is a teaching hospital. This is mainly a positive since the residents aren't on a time clock and can spend as much time on your case as required. Their diagnosis and treatment plan is checked by a "real" doctor. Often time several residents look at your case and can pool their knowledge. I have received better care at this hospital than I did on active duty, mainly because of the residents. The prosthetics department is particularly good. The quality of equipment is outstanding. At other VAs lower quality supplies are used and are not conducive to actually using the product on a daily basis. The OEF / OIF clinic is an all around great place with all of the staff passionate about veterans and concerned about getting them the proper care. It is a very good on-ramp for new veterans into the VA system. The only problems ever experienced there were when the regular Admin staff called in sick (see below) The pharmacy is excellent. Substitutions to name brand drugs are permitted when the doctors go through the protocol of justifying the medication and trying the generic / cheaper versions first. There are occasional slip ups in shipping, so you need to keep an eye on your status for critical meds. Parking situation has improved. The courtesy shuttle is an welcome addition. CONs Aging infrastructure. This hospital needs to have a major overhaul. HVAC system not zoned properly causing temperature extremes between rooms. Some room have space heaters and others have extra air conditioners. Water leaks throughout hospital raise risk of black mold in materials not replaced after leak. Employees are all over the spectrum in competence and helpfulness. Some feel entitled to their job and are only doing the bare minimum. Others are passionate about helping veterans. Some want to be helpful, but don't know how to help. Others are jaded. The hospital is so confusing many of the employees do not know what services are available. Generally the weak link are the admin support specialists. Department heads have limited ability to correct low-performers and this causes frustration on both the provider and patient side of the house. Many times an admin specialist calls in sick (understood), but a back fill does not come until an hour or two later. An example is that the admin specialist is supposed to be present at 0730. The clinic does not call the admin department to request a backfill until 0800. The replacement does not show up until 0900. Meanwhile, patients are not being seen and the clinic backs up the remainder of the day. WARD 11B is a death trap!!! I was checked in for a possible stroke and all I needed to be released was an MRI. The nurses did not even know I was on the floor. They told my wife that I was not there and I was only three doors away form the nurses station. When the transport person came to the ward to take me to the MRI, the nurses told him that I was not there. When the doctors came the next day for rounds, they were dumbfounded that the MRI was not conducted. Fortunately for me it was not a stroke, but it could have been tragic. SARRTP 5D is horrible. Lack of supervision of patients creates life threatening situations. Patients leave and get hooked up in the parking lot and come back into unit drunk or high. The nurse staff is either absent or behind their desk and do not check. Drug tests are too predictable and do not serve as a deterrent . Many veterans are accepted into the program that are there only because they need a place to stay and are not committed to participating in the program. There should be other social services for homeless veterans instead of them having to feign addiction or psychiatric condition to get a warm bed and a meal. The lack of supervision and veterans that are not sincere in making progress make it difficult for those sincerely trying. Funding is sporadic. Some departments have top of the line equipment and other departments cannot even afford cheap items needed for patient care. This unevenness is penny wise and pound foolish in that the areas that are cut are areas that are preventative or that would prevent further health problems down the road. The quality control metrics are well thought out, but at least from some of the reports that I saw were inaccurate that could only be explained by the departments lying on the report or manipulating the data. Sanitation department needs major quality control or extra personnel. The bathrooms are always filthy during the day. When clinics / departments have segregated "staff only" bathrooms because they do not want to use filthy "veteran" bathrooms you know there is a problem. read more

Upon landing in Florida, I decided immediately to seek medical attention at the nearest VA (MIami). The men and women of VA showed compassion and empathy. They made our overnight stay as comfortable as possible. Whether explaining the lay of the land, where to rest or the ability to grab a late night meal at the dining facility. I have been going here for 3years. Service is slow and everyone is rude no matter how hard you try to be nice. The wait is terrible even if you have an appointment so make sure you have the whole day free. That's just medical side If you are trying to learn about claims or do anything with dental, eye glasses or anything else. I would also recommend going to a different location they are uneducated in the field they are in and will not give you the help you need. I am currently admitted in the hospital due to a knee surgery. This place truly terrifies me. I'm not talking about the little stuff, such as bad food. I'm talking about docs on call not returning phone calls. Docs making me wait up to six hours for paid medication. Doctors insisting I walk (weight bearing) on a walker the day after surgery. This was because the docs knew the PT guys wouldn't see me on a Sunday. I cried for hours after this from the pain. This last surgery was to remove a 2+ cm tumor lodged into I think my femur. Bone was removed, cadaver bone was used to replace, a steel plate and screws were added, this was a major knee surgery at nearly four hours. I've used VA hospitals since the 90's. While some were very inefficient, I don't believe they were trying to do harm. I truly believe the Miami VA Hospital is in such a rapid tizzy to have open beds, I would not be surprised if this policy killed patients (VETERANS). Actually I would only be surprised if it didn't. On a bright side, The Fisher House is a Godsend. I have not seen it personally, being dormant but my dad has been allowed to stay there since I was admitted, and he honestly loves it. He is receiving such wonderful care. read more

They are constantly redoing the VA old building that they are bringing back so sometimes it can be a maze to get around. Always busy with lots of vets and some long wait times. Try to get to appointments early maybe they can slip you in. If you don't have to use the Miami VA use another maybe Broward VA less crowded. read more

I have been going to this hospital since 2008 and it has only gotten worse. Only a handful of nurses are awesome with a great disposition, the others are just mean, rude and inconsiderate. The hospital itself is filthy, doctors offices seem to not have been touched in years given the amount of dust piled up. Just last week I was schedule for a back procedure by the pain management clinic, I had requested before hand (as I have always),for sedation during the procedure; first the nurse said that given budget issues sedation was out of the question, after insisting on it they agreed. The day of the procedure I again made sure it was with sedation, ok you think right? Well when they took me into the procedure room I had a panic attack, one of the nurses rushed to my side all the while yelling at the medical team I was about to crash and my vitals were off the roof to what another nurse replied "she's just cold".. what kind of nurse is she" the kind that does not care... They still had not given me the sedation meds and were about to start, obviously I was scared and anxious begging them not to start until the meds were given and had taken effect. The anesthesiologist finally gave me the meds as they were about to begin and failed to wait for it to start working...I FELT EVERYTHING and they did not even care. This is only one incident I finally had the courage to write about. Something needs to be done about this hospital, staff and doctors and the lack of care for veterans patients. We served our nation, all we ask is to be treated like human beings not animals. My question is, if they don't have the budget to cover medical procedures how is it then they have money to install monitors throughout the hospital to keep an eye on equipment and nurses? Most of the doctors are great. Too much negative attitude from the civilian staff. They speak to you as if you are irritating them for asking simple questions. Let's see now how should I put this? The Miami VA hospital staff is by far a nightmare!!! Each time I have to be admitted the rooms are dirty, the bathrooms and shower are dirty with mold and feces on the handicap shower chair. Half the lights don't work and your lucky to have working air conditioning in your room. The nursing staff as well as their nurses aids are the worst I've ever experienced. They are clueless about patient privacy and don't even think about asking them to verify what medications they are giving to you. My last two admissions they were giving medication that I was not supposed to be getting from a doctor out of a Key West VA that i had never seen or visited before. I have had three surgeries there and each time they have dropped the ball each time. Just like the last surgery they almost amputated the wrong leg after the nurse told me I had really bad vascular desease in my left leg and then the surgeon reached over and marked my leg as the one to amputate. Thank God I was still aware of what was going on, I ask the surgeon why did he place that mark on my leg and he stated that this was the lower leg they were amputating that morning. I told him he was wrong and he argued with me and then told me he would go check my x-rays and my medical chart. After he checked he came back and said that I was correct so the two nurses quickly erased the mark from my left leg and the surgeon then marked my right lower leg. What the hell were they thinking? If I had not been aware I could have woken up with the wrong leg being amputated. Talk about loosing trust in the entire medical staff at the Miami VA. WOW!!! The release of information person printed out my entire medical history with over three thousand sheets without even once asking to see my identification. I could have been anyone and then all of my very personal information whould have been out there for anyone to see. What's up with that? I was able to speak with the chief of staff and after going over all of my concerns he stated that if it were up to him he would fire everyone at his Miami VA location and hire all new staff but he said he was not allowed to do so. Mean while veterans continue to fall thru the cracks and receive sub standard care. May God watch over anyone who needs to receive care at the Miami VA Hospital. This VA needs a reboot urgently!!! read more

I've read the forums, heard the gossip and like others, I developed a predetermined opinion of VA health services and care. Recently, due to life events, it became necessary to use my VA health care benefits for an emergency. I was reluctant to go. I tried every other possible alternative. Finally I went to the Emergency Room at the Miami VA Health Center. From the very first minute I arrived, it was like everyone was purposely trying to change my mind. Everyone, and I mean every single person I came into contact with was extremely polite, very helpful and performed their duties with the utmost professionalism and efficiency. I was flabbergasted. They had genuine concern for my needs and quickly took care of me. I know my medical condition well and they didn't miss a beat. I instantly became relaxed and felt assured I would be cared for correctly. The whole process was like a fine tuned watch. I am truly amazed. I have been treated at numerous facilities for a gauntlet of ailments. This was by far the most friendly, and smoothly run facility I have ever encountered. The VA facility went from my " I hope I never have to go there" list to my ...." I will go out of my way to be treated there". Whomever did whatever to get it this way is doing everything right. These people are not being forced to be this way. They really do care. It makes dealing with serious medical conditions easier. You feel you are in good hands, receiving expert and reliable medical treatment. Private Hospitals and Clinics need to observe and take cues from the Miami VA Hospital.
