1 Star…read more Unfortunately, my recent experience at Mercy Hospital in Miami was extremely disappointing. I was greeted kindly when I arrived, taken to the back quickly, and placed in a room without much of a wait. However, after that, my experience changed. I went to the ER because I was experiencing very severe headaches with throbbing behind my eyes and temples. Walking made the throbbing worse, my vision felt slightly off, and I was experiencing intermittent ringing in my left ear. I explained that I had seen a neurologist the day before, who had recommended that I have an MRI and MRA to further evaluate my symptoms. When I explained this to the nurses, I was told that Mercy did not have an MRI/MRA available for me and that, if they did, emergencies would take priority. I completely understood that. I was not asking them to give me an MRI or MRA immediately. I simply asked if they could evaluate me and perhaps perform a CT scan or do something to determine whether there was an urgent problem. Instead, I was essentially told that there wasn't much they could do other than give me an IV with pain medication. I explained that I wasn't there simply looking for pain medication. I wanted to be evaluated because I wasn't feeling well and was concerned about the possibility of something serious. What upset me the most was feeling dismissed and as though my concerns weren't being taken seriously. I ultimately left the hospital in tears. My family has a long history with Mercy. My grandmother was treated there for cancer back in the 1990s, and my family always spoke highly of the care she received. That's part of why this experience was especially disappointing to me. I understand that hospitals have limitations, and I understand that certain tests may not always be immediately available. What I expected was to feel that my symptoms and concerns were taken seriously and that someone would make a genuine effort to evaluate me. Unfortunately, that was not my experience. One star. I sincerely hope that if I ever need to return because Mercy is one of the closest hospitals to me, I receive a very different level of care and compassion. Just terrible and sad!!

Review for Denise Cooks - Miami Jackson Neurological Intensive Care Unit…read moreI am Robert Anderson. On Monday night I suffered a brain aneurysm. After being transferred to Naples Community Hospital, they placed a drain to relieve pressure and a coil to stop the bleed, but they were unable to complete the procedure. I was then transferred to the Neurological Intensive Care Unit at Miami Jackson in Miami, Florida, where I had the privilege of being cared for by Nurse Denise Cooks. Denise is truly exceptional. From the moment she took over my care, she went far above and beyond in every way. She is deeply committed to her patients and treats them with genuine compassion and professionalism. Because I had no prior knowledge of this type of injury, her detailed explanations of every treatment and procedure were incredibly helpful and reassuring. She took the time to make sure I understood what was happening, which made a difficult and frightening situation much more manageable. After five days of being confined to bed, a friend planned to bring his future wife to meet me the next day. Denise went the extra mile by agreeing to shave my face so I would feel more presentable. She did an outstanding job, and that simple act of kindness meant the world to me. It is rare to find a nurse who not only provides excellent clinical care but also shows such thoughtful, personal attention. Denise Cooks deserves to be recognized and rewarded for her extraordinary efforts. She is a credit to Miami Jackson and to the nursing profession. I cannot thank her enough for the outstanding care she provided during one of the most challenging times of my life.

Now, even though this hospital may not be new and is rather small, it is a wonderful place. We had to stay overnight and most of the staff was so great in accommodating me, so I could be with my mom. My only issue was with the night nurse, Xiomara. It seems like she was slammed and overwhelmed, but when I went up to ask her a quick question, she was very snappy and basically brushed me off. The assistant nurse saw what happened and stepped on to help me with my mom. Aside from that, I really can't stop thanking everyone for their kindness and care. It wasn't easy, but they definitely made it better.

When I indicated my desire to leave, staff explicitly stated that I could not receive my test results unless I stayed, and that an attending physician in the morning would determine 'how long I had to stay.' Furthermore, staff asserted that if I left, all diagnostic testing performed that day would be invalidated and would need to be repeated tomorrow. These statements constitute deceptive practices, coercion, and a denial of my right to informed refusal and immediate access to my medical records. The hospital attempted to restrict my liberty and autonomy through misleading claims of authority rather than respecting my voluntary status as a competent patient. These coercive practices are unethical.

TL/DR version: if your parents are members of the clinic, you'll have to keep an eye on their appointments and be prepared to call management to make sure they help keep your family members in good health. Oh and today (07/30/16) there was a roach in the floor of the "Emergency Room" as well as small flying insects. I took my mom yesterday (07/29/16) for neck pain/sprain and she was seen by an ARNP - not by a real doctor. Although she was eventually seen by an orthopedist all she got was a neck brace and pills that zoned her out without muscle relief. On either case, the orthopedist didnt even consider xraying her or ordering further diagnosis. My mom's symptoms didn't improve, and I called management to get approval to have my mom seen at another urgent care center. I was told there was an actual doctor today (I remembered when they always had a real doctor on call). My call today "got the fire going" enough for her to get treated today, up to the point where they ordered an xray but there was no radiologist on call. Again, there always used to be one on call. This clinic has really gone downhill in service. I'd advice you to stay away, or be in the lookout for your parents' health.
