After requesting a Duct Cleaning, The service technician took pictures of Ducts that were leaking and could not clean them. Before he left he advised us that he would email a quote to replace the ducts and a quote for a service agreement. After Three weeks we never received an email. I followed up by calling the office, then after being on hold for five minutes I was told they could not help. I think that out of courtesy to the customer we should have been told that a lot sooner. I had an annual contract with Michael & Sons. The A/C and Heating check up was good. When the plumber came he said that all the insides of the toilets needed to be changed for $300.00 each...I said no thank you, I will do it myself..When the electrician came he checked off a lot of items on his list that he did not even look at, he said I needed to replaced ground rods and wires in the back of the house. I emailed the manager (Matt) and asked why did the technician check off things he did not look at and how did he know I need to replace rods/wires? He said he would have the tech call me, he called a few days later and left a message to call him back. I returned the call and left a message and Never heard back from him. This company cons you. Instead of finding the problem they run a lot of tests . Each one is $369. I stopped him and told him it just needed a recharge. They charge by the test not by the hour. This person was going to charge me for 3 tests at 369 each. Michael and Son is not honest and are out to take your money for tests that dont need to be run. Do not use Michael and Son. I made them just recharge my hvac instead of a Coil filter test...a leak detector test and then they elwanted to replace my whole coils for 2139.00. Duct work replacement review. We hired this company to replace the duct work under our house. It was old and falling apart. The crew came, and it was quickly apparent that they were not feeling like doing this job. Every time I looked out the window they were outside, standing around, or sitting in the back of the van. When they pulled out the old ducting, it didn't look like very much to me. The following day my husband went under the house and discovered that they left several BAGS of trash there, and that there were several places where the duct work was laying on the ground (apparently this was a no no), as well as other things that either were not done, or done incorrectly. I called back to request Michael and son send out a DIFFERENT crew (didn't want the same guys because we figured if we couldn't trust them to do it right the first time, couldn't trust them now either) to correct the problems. They accommodated us and the 2nd crew did a much better job, and found even more problems with what the 1st crew did than we were aware of. We appreciated their hard work, but I wanted to write this review mainly because most people probably don't go under the house (or in the attic) to check behind and make sure things were done right, so they have no idea. In the end Michael & Sons made it right. Be careful and make sure the work is inspected to make sure it's done correctly. Your wallet (power bill) will thank you. read more

We had an issue with the condensation line on our HVAC unit. When they fixed the line and added a flushout, they torqued the line so much that it broke the pan that it is attached to. Rather than addressing the broken pan, the technician attempted to tape over it. When the system was turned on, the water came through the broken pan and leaked in the attic through the ceiling and onto the floor below. When I called them, they wouldn't even send anyone out for four days, even though it was something that they had worked on before. When I spoke to the General Manager, he wouldn't even agree to look at the problem. His response was "there's no way we did that". Everyone makes mistakes, but you need to own them and take responsibility. My insurance company will be subrogating the claim against them for my damages. read more

After damaging my home Michael and Son stated it was due to a pre-existing problem for which I have the report by Michael and Son that the system was running as it should prior to the work they installed. They cut out the drywall because it was wet and left it like that only wanting to replace the drywall without performing any restoration services to address the mold that had developed. They assured me that I would receive a refund on the work they installed because it had to be removed and I have received nothing. It's not the fact that a mistake was made by Michael and Son on their recommendation to install the item, it's the means by which they handled the mistake when it was brought to their attention. They say they stand behind their work but actions speak louder than words. Do your research before you contract with this company. read more

Please, Please! Stay away from this business if you don't like surprise overpriced estimates and shady business practices! Needed 5 outdoor light fixtures hung and my electrical pool box remounted (not wired!) onto the side of my house. Pretty straight forward work. I thought it was questionable when I could not get a quote over the phone and was told that the technician would have to see the job first. Really? First red flag. But I gave them the benefit of the doubt and thought it couldn't be THAT much. The technician walked around my house looked at what I wanted done and put the info in his iPad. My quote was $1027.00!! Ridiculous! Well that was WAY over what I had expected. But since I agreed to their trip charge when I made the appointment I was held hostage to pay the $69 (plus tax!) dispatch fee. I'm sure this goes on all day long with Michael & Sons. They quote their exorbitant fees, don't have to do the work, still get your $73.83, and onto the next job with another outrageous quote. (Let me say though, the technician was great and understanding. I did not have a problem with him, he was just doing his job.) read more

We needed two PVC ball valves replaced for our pool. We had used Michael & Son previously for an electrical issue and they did a great, reasonably priced job for us. For this reason, we reached out to them for this plumbing issue. The representative responded right away and came out within a few hours for the assessment. He was courteous and friendly. Of course, you agree to pay for the assessment upfront. He told us all the possible problems that could arise because the pipes were old and how the PVC replacement parts we purchased would not work. He quoted a price of $1100 with $400 being for parts/supplies. PVC is not expensive! We had to pay the $70 for his assessment and estimate. This seemed like a ridiculous quote for a simple job. We called someone else and he fixed the problem WITH our already purchased parts for $150! It took him about 45 minutes! I believe they gin-up the problem in order to make the estimate high knowing they will always receive the minimum of $70. We were also told the job could not be done for at least a week or more due to cold temperatures. Our guy came within 3 days and completed the job in less than an hour with no concerns about the temperature. Our pool works perfectly now. Use some one else :/ read more

Prompt, timely arrival as scheduled. Two plumbers arrived. One had the wisdom to stay quiet on the entire quote at our house as the other one distributed several bags of manure regarding our broken geothermal well. Had we gone with the horses rear end manure man, we likely would have had to wait for a second round of parts as the difference between a two and three wire well pump was clearly misunderstood. Worse, a pump flow rate far exceeding the Geothermal HVAC system was to be installed that the OEM states as a minimum would have taken many years off the two systems and likely would have ruptured the heat exchangers. The clincher was when he told me he would use 'special' galvanized couplers. This well used threaded PVC pipe. Using steel to PVC under load is a no-no. Avoid. read more

I tried to hire this company to rewire my hot tub. On the day that they were scheduled to do the job, they called to let me know that due to the traffic, they would not be able to make it that day. The representative told me that she would call the next day. I never received that call. I had to call her to try to reschedule 2 days later. When I did call, she told me that they didn't get the permits back yet and that she would call the following day to reschedule. She never called. Again, I had to call her. This is a review of their customer service and business practices, not their actual technical work since no one ever showed up for my quote, multiple times. Maybe they have great technicians, who knows?! But they are very poorly run. Day #1 - I called to request a quote. Day #2 - left another message. Day #3 - Someone called back and said they could schedule a quote but I would have to pay extra as it was now the weekend. I said, no, let's schedule for Monday. Day #6 - My scheduled appointment - no one shows or calls. They claim they came by and we didn't answer the door. I explained that I was sitting outside of my house waiting for them and that no one came by. They rescheduled for later that week. Day #9 - I called to confirm the appointment. Day #10 - Appointment was for the late morning. I waited at home all day. No one came. I called and left three voicemail messages asking where the person was to give me a quote. No response. Day #16 - Received a call back. Many apologies. They said they could come out the next day. Then they put me on hold for 45 minutes. Finally someone came back on the line and said they could come at 3pm tomorrow and promised they would be there. Day #17 - I started waiting outside at 2pm. At 3:15pm I started calling. At 4:41 I spoke to the customer service person who said that they came by right before 3, but were unable to reach me by phone and that no one answered the door. I checked my phone in case the ringer was turned off. Nope. No missed calls. Day #32 - Someone called me to reschedule after I "missed" my appointment. Yeah, I don't think so. read more

I didn't see a place for reviews on the web site and I can guess why. My daughter had them come to her house to fix a leaking dishwasher for which she had turned the water off to. The service person looked at it (JUST looked) saw the water spurting from the connection point (threaded hose connector at dishwasher end) and proclaimed that there needed to be a service visit that should include a new dishwasher. Paid the service fee of over $70 for that pearl of information...again.....without any attempt to understand why it was leaking....just LOOKING at it. I had visited my daughter a day later, discovered it was the washer in the hose end that needed to be replaced. For the cost of about $1 I fixed the problem by replacing the washer. I'm sure that the service tech had some of these on his truck, or for sure he would have had a replacement hose. But there isn't any real money in that. The cash cow is when they show up again, 2nd service charge, labor to pull the dishwasher out and replace it, priced up parts....etc. Note that this isn't your local father son establishment...its a franchise....not necessarily bent on building relationships with customers but rather to get people to sign coverage contracts and generate revenue. My advice, find a plumber that is a family business and because they live in the community they do build relationships with customers....honest and real relationships. ....thats all he had to do was put a new washer on the hose end and tighten it. read more

On August 27th, I placed an emergency call for service due to the A/C not working properly. Was told that the technician would be out there between 6:30 PM and 12;30 AM. Things started off well because before I knew it, I was told the technician would be at the house by 4:30. Well from that point forward it went downhill real quick. Andrew S. showed up and the first thing he did was started complaining about how he had been on Emergency call for the last 72 hours. While I am sympathetic, that's not the way to greet a person by complaining about your job. He then proceeded to make a snide remark about how people could not wait till normal business hours to get their A/C fixed. Well, Michael and Sons does offer 24 hours service thus that is part of the job, so don't complain about it to the customer. Furthermore, I had my 84 year old parents visiting and the last thing I needed to have was a hot box for them. And it only got worse. Instead of him listening to me describe what was going on. He just barged upstairs, looked at the air handler for about 1 minute, then proceeded to go outside and hook up his gages to the unit and measure pressures and then take some current/voltage readings. After 5 minutes he got up, said all was working correctly and wrote up the ticket. He did not bother to do any further investigating or did he want to. When I questioned him about if there was anything else he could do, he became very defensive and walked off to his truck. Well needless to say, the system was not working correctly, the issues remerged and I had to call out another company. But unlike Michael and Sons, this time the technician listened, described all the possible causes for the issues, then investigated, because he got the same readings as Andrew did and found the problem. Point being, one person tried to do their job and one did not. I have used Michael and Sons in the past but no more. Service like this does not warrant further business. read more

Got an estimate to have a 220 volt outlet installed in my garage, which I agreed to the verbally stated cost. Was told I would get the invoice via email, which I did. Along with the cost of the outlet installation I received a second invoice for a "Silver HCA service agreement " for an additional $202 that was never discussed with me nor did I agree to pay. We had the WORST experience replacing our hot water heater with a tankless system. The original technician did not know how to install the unit properly (ie up to code) and that has led to intermittent hot water and a gas smell that has taken over a month to correct. Accidents happen but you should want to correct them instead of continuing to send the same technician out to our house. It took about half a dozen calls to the manager (who could use a lesson in customer service) to finally get things fixed. I would not recommend this company due to their inability to correct any mistakes in a timely manner. read more

I called and scheduled a service call because I had a vacation rental with no hot water. The woman took my information, and accurately read back my phone number from the callerID on her display. When 6 hours go by and I haven't heard from them, I call back and find out the lady input the wrong phone number into the system, and the tech couldn't reach me to enter the premises. This new person takes my phone number again, I ask her to read it back, and she got it wrong. I repeat my number, slower this time digit by digit. She says she has it, and I ask her to read it back, and she has it wrong again. After the 3rd time of me going slowly digit by digit, she finally reads me back correct phone number. Meanwhile, it's now past normal billing hours, hours past when they promised the service call, so I'm forced to pay their over-time rate to get hot water back for my guests on their vacation, all because they are unable to enter a phone number accurately into their system. Had they not charged me the extra rate, I'd have gotten over it and maybe even used them again. Update: Tried calling the below number several times throughout the day. Every time it just rang a while and went to voicemail, which is indicative of the service so far. I also tried again on a couple other days, and I'm convinced no one actually answers this number. I can't say enough great things about this company. I'm from out of town and had limited time in Wilmington to address my AC duct work issue. I called Michael & Sons and someone was out that afternoon to look at the issue, and the repair was completed the following morning. We needed another quote for an unrelated issue (split level AC installation upstairs), and someone came that same day to provide a quote for us! Basically, was very impressed because sometime finding contractors in Wilmington can be quite the challenge. Reasonable price and customer service was amazing! I cannot say enough about the wonderful experience we had with Michael & Sons! We had natural gas back up into our home on Thanksgiving afternoon due to a cracked heat exchanger, which made for a very exciting time for all our dinner guests. The fire department arrived and cut off the system and natural gas coming to our home. The next morning I began calling HVAC companies to get quotes, some never even returned our calls. We got quotes from quite a few companies since we don't take making that kind of expenditure lightly. After all the quotes were in it was obvious that Michael & Sons was the best choice. Our installation was top notch...the inspector that came out to pass the unit was highly impressed with the way the installer designed the installation. We were so very pleased with both the salesman and the installer that when we needed some electrical work a few weeks later it was a given to send the work their way and again, we were not disappointed. We hired this company because of their availability/reviews. We sat home all weekend waiting for this company to show. Day #1 I called and their plumber said they came to our home and called with no answer (we have the ring camera) we were home all day with a no show. Day #2 we have been home all day, called to check on ETA and another plumber stating they called and we did not answer so we waited home all day for no reason. We have zero missed calls, when I reminded the rep that answered I have cameras the story changed when they said they had showed up two days with nobody home. Today they just called without answer so did not show. So I called at 5:50pm and they said driver called and left message on voicemail, knocked on door and left tag. When I called to tell them, the first rep said that their manager wanted me to check to make sure door was not tagged and to call back as they can track their trucks. When I called back I was put on hold for 28 min then told they don't track trucks. First rep said they'd send someone out tonight, but then they said earliest available is middle of next week. At 2:33 PM no one showed, I decided to call and find out the new ETA. Calling the company they ask me to reschedule for Friday due to the tech being sick. The one issue I had was no one had the respect to call us and let us know that no one was going to arrive today. So I took my business else where. I had Michael & Son Services perform a routine maintenance on the HVAC system for a rental property that I own. I wanted to have the system checked to avoid any emergency situations that would negatively impact the renters' experience. The technician said that the unit was working properly and AC refrigeration levels looked good. 4 days later, shortly after a renter checked in, the unit was not cooling the house at all. The temperature inside the house at night never went below 80 degrees. I called Michael & Sons to have them come back, now under an emergency situation, and they said it would be days before they would be able to look at the unit again. Being we had renters still at the property, I had to call another HVAC company, who said refrigeration levels were extremely low and there had been a leak, only 4 days after Michael and Sons said the unit looked good. After having the other HVAC company fix the unit because Michael and Sons wouldn't respond in a timely manner, I requested reimbursement from Michael and Sons for the repairs and lost rental income, as it was quite likely the leak was caused by the Michael and Sons technician. After being strung along by the GM at Michael and Sons Wilmington NC office for well over a month who said he was looking into the situation, Michael and Sons refused to own up to the error caused by their technician, causing me over $2,000 in repair costs and lost income. Michael and Son Wilmington did show up to repair a garden tub faucet that would not shut off. They installed 2, $6 shutoff valves that took less than 15 minutes total and charged $250. That is a ridiculously high rate for 15 minutes and $12 parts. I'll never call them again. read more

I had them repair a plumbing line $311.00 way to high for this area. The technician was excellent. response time was good but the price shock is the problem. I was looking for another 'plumbing service online but Michael and son had managed to get their website to come up in front of the company I was looking for and I didn't notice that on my phone.
