I've been coming to the salon for my haircuts for a couple years now. I have easy, straight, no-fuss hair, that other stylists have managed to screw up - not Minnie...she is patient, not pushy, and gives me exactly what I ask for (and definitely understands I have about 5 minutes to spend on my hair in the morning). I was visiting my brother in Rochester after 2 years and I had avoided getting a single haircut throughout that time so that I could grow them out and try something crazy. What is college for, right? So I came to these guys with a vague request that I just want to do something crazy with my hair in a way that would suit my round face. Michelle not only gave my unkempt a great cut and shape but also highlighted my hair in a tasteful manner that I'm still happy about after roughly 2 months. These guys are good at what they do and have a friendly and patient attitude. After reading reviews here, I decided to try out this salon. Biggest mistake of my life. Not only was the salon unclean (bricks missing from the walls, molding gone at the baseboards, cords and styling tools were literally laying all over the floor to the point where I tripped over them) and a dog running around baking, I left with the worst cut and color I've ever received. Andrea colored and toned my hair twice in the 3 1/2 hours that I was there, and the final result was not what I asked for, much more blonde than brown and very orange. She spent all of 5 minutes on the cut, and rushed me out the door. My ends are CLEARLY uneven and lopsided. I asked her to even my cut and take off the dead and split ends, which she did not do. I am incredibly disappointed in her work and in the salon itself. Note: They charge more to pay with a card than cash. The difference for me was $15. read more

Andrea does a great job at pixie cuts. She is truly a skilled hair dresser with great technique. You can tell that she takes pride in her work. I have nothing but good things to say about Michael Avery Salon. The atmosphere is warm and inviting where modern style meets the charm of the original building. I've gone to Michael for a couple years now, and I can always trust him to make me look fabulous. He really listens to how you wear your hair and comes up with the best style for you. I visited Michael Avery and Co. after a hair dying disappointment. As a blonde, my regular stylist made my hair considerably darker than its natural color. I called the salon, left a message, and Michelle called me back a few hours later. Not only did she patiently and kindly listen to me whine about my hair disaster, she also gave me some advice about what I could do at home to lighten the color until my appointment. At the appointment, Michelle talked with me first about what I expected. Again, she was patient and understanding, and even looked at the pictures I had brought to give her an idea of what my hair had been like before. During the appointment, she was thorough. She took her time highlighting my hair, checked the foils regularly while it was processing, and was attentive without being overbearing. At the end, she even trimmed up some of the ends that had been missed at my previous appointment with another stylist, even though I hadn't asked for a cut. She also clearly explained the products she used on my hair without pushing a sale, and styled my hair to perfection. I left feeling a million times better than when I had come in. The salon is easy to find (I am not from Rochester), and upon entry, you are greeted by an adorable, calm Cocker Spaniel, before being offered something to drink. I was greeted immediately and waited no time at all for Michelle. After finding a stylist I loved in California and having to move to NY, I was skeptical of being able to find someone who could compare, but Michelle is fantastic. After two years of searching, I am so happy to have finally found someone who is professional and incredibly talented when it comes to hair. read more

On my sister's recommendation, I went to Michael Avery for a cut and color, after needing a change from my long-time stylist in Austin. I was very impressed. The salon is beautiful--nestled in the hip South Wedge neighborhood in an older brick building. Michael was my stylist and he was great. He asked me some questions about my hair routine--blowdry, how I wear it, etc. It was apparent that he strives to give the client what works for them and what fits into their lifestyle. He was not judgmental at all--some stylists I've been to over the years seemed very judgmental about the products I use, frequency of hair washing, putting it up or down, etc. Not Michael. I was ecstatic with the results--color was gorgeous and the cut was just the change I needed to get me excited about my hair again! My only complaint was the price. I thought I could get more bang for my buck in Rochester, but I ended up paying more than I do back in Austin. But you do get what you pay for, and I was very happy and will definitely go back when I'm back in the 585 again!! read more

I've been going to this salon for years based on a recommendation from a friend. Let me be that friend to you. Michael does an amazing job. He figures out what kind of hair you have, and how hard you are willing to work to make your hair look great and can suggest a cut that's perfect for you! The salon has a cool vibe of old building and modern design, great music that puts me in a good mood and fun and friendly people from the staff to the other clients. I have a usual cut and color that I love but have also tried new things, knowing Michael will weigh in honestly about how it might look and how much upkeep it will take. Just today I decided to go short and Michael talked to me about a product that would be helpful (but never tried to get me to buy it) and told me what he was doing as he styled it so that tomorrow I can replicate it. In June I came to Michael Avery purely based off of the stellar reviews I read on Yelp, specifically for Minnie. So I guess you could say I expected a lot from her and I'm happy to say that she far exceeded my expectations. I wanted something trendy and noticeably different, but not something I'd have to keep up with, such as highlights or a different hair color, considering I'm living in LA for the summer and everything here is extremely pricey. Minnie took the time to meet with me prior to my hair appointment to discuss all of this and she immediately said ombré would be the best way to go and continued to go into an in depth explanation about how she would master it. This was very reassuring to me because I've had ombré done to me twice by two very well known hair salons in the Rochester/Webster area and they failed horribly. Yes, I have Asian hair, but I've seen it done on Asians before and I know it's possible. The hair salons I went to clearly had no idea what they were doing on Asian hair, let alone what a proper ombré should look like. When I say it was bad, believe me it was BAD. Clearly you can see why I was a bit nervous to try it again, but Minnie reassured me that she's a master at it, not to mention she learned how to do it in LA! Well, fast forward a month and it did take a little bit to get used to because it was so drastic, even though that's exactly what I wanted, but I absolutely love it. I've gotten so many compliments! I told Minnie this before I left and I'm still dead serious about it, she is now my go to hair lady! She is incredibly skilled and a master and what she does. Minnie is amazing! I have red hair which tends to fade quickly AND I do my best to avoid products tested on animals. The line she uses, Enjoy, is 'tested on stylists not animals' and the color is great! She was also able to give me a haircut that takes advantage of my natural wave instead of me having to flatiron my hair to avoid frizz. She is wonderful and I will be back again. I have been seeing Jason for 3 cuts now and have my 4th scheduled in a couple weeks. He is such a sweetie with a real eye for what I want when I can't say it myself. He spends the time getting to know me and my habits so my hair won't be unmanageable when I get home, and it grows out beautifully - not awkwardly. I had been seeing the same stylist for 10 or 11 years when I switched to Jason and I won't be going anywhere else! I'm not sure what say. The cuts and styles I've gotten from a couple of different people here have been good. The first cut was excellent, then, meh. Technically solid, but no "Wow" hair moments. It looks very good every time, but not getting what I want. Color isn't quite right. Nothing wrong, but nothing quite right either. I'd recommend the place for a good haircut, but I think you'll have to make up your mind if it's the right place. This most certainly is the pictures that were taken the day of my hair experience! I have since found a different salon where it was clearly explained that the right steps to changing my hair color was most certainly not followed! ! The new stylist used a color remover that should have been used the first time before my hair was processed in any other way! The difference in my hair being processed properly is amazing! ! In order to correct the unbelievably unacceptable hair cut I was given another inch and a half had to be removed! ! The stylist that is now working on my hair said he couldn't believe how uneven my hair was cut and said that obviously the person that was cutting it got lost or overwhelmed and should have stopped and asked for help! ! My hair looks incredibly better thankfully! But since the owner started to me that there was absolutely nothing wrong with my hair and felt that she did a good job shows he could care less about how I felt about the experience! My hair is now 8 inches shorter when I asked for a 2 inch haircut! Awesome! Cuz that will just grow right back in a week right??!! And the fact that I was not given our even offered a single bit of my money back is completely unexceptable! So now I'm in over $300 at this point since I had to pay another person to correct the mess that was made of my hair! And after the comments I've had to hear and the embarrassment of how my hair looked I am more than entitled to post a completely true and accurate review of my experience! ! And the numerous other complaints and horror stories of hair services received from this salon I've encountered since sharing my experience left me to feel that I have every right to share my experience with other possible clients! People will make their own decisions on whether they would like to take a chance but at least they have a fair warning of what the possible outcome may be! ! read more

In September I celebrated the 20th anniversary of my first appointment with Michael. Yes, that's right-- I've celebrated it every year! I first went to Michael because I saw a woman who had exactly the hair that I wanted and she told me-- "Michael Avery." The rest is history. I have the short, choppy, edgy bleached white hair that I love. Since that first appointment I followed Michael as he moved to four different salons before he fulfilled his dream of opening his own salon. Michael is patient and attentive to detail, and he has carefully selected the other stylists he has brought into his salon. I've referred many people to this salon over the years -- including strangers who have admired my hair--and they are all still "regulars ". The salon is a warm and friendly place. It's like a family. Michelle is the best!! I HATE going to salons because I usually end up feeling like I spent a lot of money on something I didn't want--but not so at Michael Avery. The salon seems pretty intimidating at first, but Michelle is so down to earth and actually LISTENS to what you want. When I got my hair colored it came out slightly darker than we had talked about, but it still looked great and I was not going to say anything. But Michelle knew and had me come in the next day so I could get exactly what I wanted. She even refused to take my money until I was beaming. For all the work she put in, and for how many compliments I got after, I definitely recommend her. Also, six months after the haircut, it still looked good! Most places will make you feel guilty for not coming in every six weeks, but they never do here. That might be my favorite thing! read more

Andrea is fantastic! I have been to see her twice now, once for just a style and once for a cut and style, and have been thrilled both times! I keep being her last appointment of the day, but she hasn't rushed me at all. She has a great eye and is so confident! Plus she is super-nice - I feel like I've been going to her forever! I made an appointment for a dimensional color and cut. First, my appointment time was changed (ok fine...I'll reschedule the sitter), then when I arrived, I was informed that my appointment would be with a different person. Jason was perfectly pleasant and welcoming, but immediately informed me that he wouldn't be able to do the balayage I wanted and suggested that I make an appointment with someone else on a different date and time. After explaining that wouldn't be possible (again...I just rescheduled my sitter...) he agreed to do the base color of my balayage so we could at least get the process started. I wound up with this terribly harsh line of color running through my hair, a ton of color slapped on to the side of my face, a poorly executed V-cut and the distinct impression that he was only interested in his regulars and not looking to gain new clientele. Per his suggestion, I called the following week to schedule the rest of the balayage with their color specialist, and I was informed that she was booked up on Saturdays for the next 4 weeks. A very disappointing experience all around. read more
