I enjoyed my new hair style and my experience at Thanh's hair design. I called in on Sunday and got my appointment set very quick. The salon is on Main Street so I had to park on the street. Came in and there were other customers waiting inside. I got my hair washed, then Mrs.Thanh checked for the hairstyle I want. Due to my hair condition, I couldn't get what I want but it was for the best. Mrs.Thanh gave me advice on what I should get and we went with mocha hair color. Staffs are friendly. Came here for my first time ever, as Thanh was recommending by my friend. I got a wash, cut and style and was so happy with the results! I've never had a bob before in my life but Thanh delivered and cut it so quickly. She was able to bring so much life and volume to my hair. Thanh is very nice and her salon is very clean and modern. Thanh did a fantastic job with my hair. It's hard for me to find someone that can curl my hair and make it hold. I have very silky south asian hair and most people don't know how to style it. Thanh was very sweet as soon as I arrived. We connected very well which is very important in a customer facing business. I showed Thanh a picture of the type of hair style I was looking for and she did just that. I came in with very flat uneven hair. And she corrected it and divided it from the center and gave me beautiful layers. As soon as you walk into her salon, you will greeted and she will share her wifi with you while you wait for your haircut. I have had my haircut here multiple times now and Thanh always does a great job. It's hard to find someone who can cut men's asian hair well especially with different fashion cuts and color. I live over an hour outside of town and travel in every three or four weeks to get my hair done. She even managed to fix my hair once when someone else messed it up. I've went here two times before and I can say that this business is rather like a casino, if you pay a large amount they will treat you very kindly and sweet talk you, if you pay for a small amount they will either be rather cold or try to change your mind on what you want and try to get you to pay for a bigger cut. On my second experience here I got one of the worst haircut treatments ever, I asked for just a bit of a trim on my bangs since they started to grow out in front of my face and when I sat down the lady who was going to cut my hair gave me a whole new hair style and charged me for the service she decided to give me when all I asked for was a trim on my bangs. The people who work here barely listen to what you want and just do as they please with your hair and decide to charge you for the expenses of what you didn't ask to pay for. I've got to say this has been the worst experience with a hairdresser I've had in a while, they chopped off a giant part of my hair's length and then charged me for the damage they decided to do. The people who work here are very discreet on asking what you want done with your hair and do not tell you what they are going to do with your hair before starting. I was never told they were going to give me a whole different haircut and that's what sucks about this business. You can see the before and after pictures of my hair and you can see that they did not just give me a trim on my bangs, they gave me a whole different hairstyle. The only reason this place isn't geting a full one star is because it's true that they have rather good layering, it's hard for me to find places where the employees know how to layer hair, but all and all, worst experience ever. read more

This was, without question, the worst salon experience I've ever had. The owner and her daughter were incredibly unprofessional, spending the majority of my appointment gossiping in the corner and giving me rude, judgmental looks. When I showed her the style I wanted, she completely disregarded it and insisted on something entirely different, claiming it would look better, despite my clear preferences. When I politely declined, she became even more condescending, continuing to gossip with her daughter as if I wasn't even there. The lack of respect, courtesy, and basic professionalism was astounding. I've never felt so uncomfortable and disrespected at any service. I would never recommend this salon to anyone. read more

Thanh's Hair Design is my new go-to place for a quick and inexpensive haircut. A men's cut without wash is $11, which is on par with your chain salon (Great Clips, Hairzoo, Supercuts) prices, but with a much better outcome. Thanh takes her time with your haircut and does not rush to get the next customer in the chair. I'd like to think of myself as "low-maintenance" and i'm not very picky, but I think Thanh does a great job. I'll be back. read more

I came here to have my hair dyed, but Thanh kept insisting that she would also cut my hair. I said "No, thank you" multiple times, but much to my surprise, she snipped some hair on the back of my head while I was busy responding to a work e-mail on my phone. At that point, I felt like I had no choice but to agree to a haircut, since she had already cut out a chunk of my hair in the back. However, I told her I only wanted a trim of a few cm, no more than 1 inch, because I prefer my hair long. She ended up cutting more than 6 inches for the length (in less than 5 minutes), and one side was 2-3 inches shorter than the other side. I can live with the shorter-than-expected length, but when I mentioned that one side looked longer, she said my hair looked great and kept dismissing my concerns. I paid her and left, but when I got home, it was very noticeable that one side was a few inches shorter than the other. I went back and politely asked her if she could trim the length on the side that was a few inches longer than the other side. I understand that mistakes can happen and I just wanted my hair to be fixed so that it wasn't all wonky anymore. I was honestly really surprised at how argumentative and aggressive Thanh was. She kept telling me that she disagreed with me and that I was wrong. She kept telling me to look at the mirror because my hair was perfect and even. WOW! She needs to get glasses. I posted a picture here as proof. This is what Thanh considers to be a perfect and even haircut. This place should be called Thanh's Hair NIGHTMARES. It looks like I'll have to hire someone else to fix my hair since Thanh wouldn't fix, much less acknowledge or apologize, for her horrible and uneven haircut. I came here for my first ever Rochester haircut! I generally get my hair cut when I visit NYC, since the folks in Flushing really know Asian hair and do a great job without breaking the bank. Thanh (or Leena, as she is also called) saves me that trip all the way down to the city! She has been cutting hair for 25 years, 10 of which were here in the US. She's got confidence in her technique, and plenty of sass to match. I saw that a lot of people brought in photos of haircuts to show her. She knows what looks good, and how to make it happen. She keeps a nice conversation going during your appointment. I called the morning of (on a Friday) and got an afternoon appointment. I have been going to Lina for a few years now, and she's always done a great job. She's had 27 years of experience, particularly with Asian hair. It's a relatively small establishment with 3-4 chairs for haircuts. Usually it's her and another stylist running the place. I came recently on a Sunday around noon and the place was packed. There are a few seats for you to sit while waiting. She's really good and fast so her work quality is not compromised by the time crunch. I'm usually presentable after the haircut, which says a lot about her work. It's usually $13 before tips. I was looking for an affordable place to get my hair cut and went to yelp and found this place. Specifically, I was looking for a salon that had experience cutting Asian hair. My hair was very long and dying because of many bleached treatments in the past year. I have very thin and fine hair, so I was looking to keep some length while also adding layers to make it look more voluminous. First parking is definitely a hassle. Plan to arrive 10 minutes early just to find parking on the street. I walked in and was greeted very politely. She asked if I had pictures of what I wanted and she seemed very confident of achieving it. She showed me a previous cut that she did for a client recently and it looked very similar to what I wanted so I was very optimistic off the bat. They washed my hair first. Not the best hair wash I've received, but for the price I wasn't complaining too much. I do wish they were a little more gentle combing my hair after the wash though. When I first went here over 5 years ago and got my first haircut from Lina, I knew that I was going to be a customer for life. Lina is a master of her craft. She is the owner here and she has been cutting hair professionally for decades. She has a keen eye and an amazing knack for matching the hairstyle and cut to an individual's face. If you know what you want, then she will cut it to your liking and match it to the shape of your face to give you the best look possible. If you don't, then she can recommend a look that would best match your style/face. This kind of skill can only come from many years of experience and training, and she has an abundance of it. The price here is very decent, and for the quality of your cut, it can't be beat. If you compare the prices here to other Asian salons, you'll see that this is the better deal. Lina has cut my wife's hair many times now, and she gets compliments from co-workers and friends every time. Parking can be an issue at times. I usually park in the lot across the street where ocean garden is, but if it's busy you'll have to find street parking. My advice is to go during the week days, and not the weekend.
