Sadly, we actually had a terrible haircut from Diana here. My son has a mixture of 2c / 3a hair. His father took him in and told her his goal was to grow his hair long. He showed her 3 inspiration photos for cuts. He specifically stated we wanted a trim around the temples and shaping and an evening of his bangs. We were new customers and booked a kids haircut thinking that's for kids a not a style of cut. Diana proceeded to cut inches off of his hair he'd spent months growing. She did layer it on the sides, but cut it in a mushroom cut. But most egregious is she finished by brushing all of his curls out. She clearly knew it looked crazy because she asked about whether she should make it shorter (already much too short). His father could tell she had no idea what she was doing so declined further "fixes." Since we had a day out planned. After leaving, given how terrible he looked they went back to the salon to ask for a fix. At least wet his hair. She finally re-wet his hair leaving his curls insanely short - particularly the bangs. He asked her to bring it up on the temples to fix the bizarre mushroom shape, and she refused saying she didn't understand and it's a "kids cut" and that's not what they do for a "kids cut." We were not told there was a standard haircut provided to all kids. She also stated they don't style kids hair for the cut. So they let curly hair kids leave looking like brushed out frizzballs?When he got upset about the whole experience- they made it clear in front of our son that his expectations were too high and they wouldn't be fixing anything. Please please avoid this place with your children - or your curly hair. What a terrible terrible experience! If you can't do a hair cut, just admit it. Don't destroy a kids hair before the holidays and holiday photos. ..... Update - regarding the haircut - we received the following message about the cut and blow dry: "At the beginning of the appointment, your son's father showed the stylist inspiration photos for your son's hair. The photos that were shown were long curly cuts, and it was explained to the stylist that when your son's hair grows out, he does not want it to be big on the sides of his head. With every child/teen appointment, all of our stylists first talk to the parent at the consultation and at the start of cutting. The stylist was following the instructions she was given by your son's father. Once she started cutting, she asked your son's father to come over and check if the first cut was OK. He said yes, and she proceeded to give your son a trim and was taking her time during the appointment. She noticed that the sides were previously cut unevenly, so she made sure to even them out while she was shaping his hair. After she trimmed and shaped his hair, she dried his hair, as it was very cold outside. In the video recording of the appointment, there was not much hair on the floor. She just did a trim and did not cut inches off of his hair." So yes, they were provided the inspiration photos. Yes their stylist asked him to "check on the cut" only after she had already cut significantly more than was requested. At that point, there was nothing meaningful he could do. Yes, she did blow dry his hair into this state, and they are defending it as appropriate for how you blow dry curly hair. "Your son's father and your son were satisfied at the end of the appointment and gave the stylist a generous tip. Your son was not upset when he left." They claim because we left a large tip ($10) that we were please. No, we just believe in compensating people for their time - even if we dislike their services. Monetary penalization is not something we support. All we wanted was an apology or acknowledgement that how our son was sent into the world by the salon was not appropriate. That there was a communication breakdown of what the stylist could provide. That there was any sort of acknowledgment that the cut received was different than the intended and requested. read more

Diana at Michael Hair Salon in Park Slope has been my hair stylist for close to 20 years. She is professional, talented, efficient, kind and has become a friend. At the risk of sounding dramatic, I have no idea what I'd do without Diana in my life! My hair is tricky - the strands are thin, but there's A LOT of it, which can make doing highlights time consuming and arduous. Nothing is a problem for Diana - she is meticulous, thorough, and does the best blowout ever. I always feel so much better after I see her - every time I leave the salon, I feel like a new person. Went to Alisa for a trim. She was awesome. She had someone at 4 who never showed so she took me early. The person showed up after my hair was wet and I was in her seat. She took me anyways and made sure she cut and blew out my hair without moving me or complaining about it. She also did exactly what I asked for. I know that more often than not hairdressers tend to get scissor happy, especially when you say you want a trim. She showed me how much she was taking off and even explained what she was doing. It came out perfect. I'll def be going back. Also very affordable for the area. read more

Diana saved my pandemic hair! I hadn't had a haircut since February. I wasn't ready to go into a salon yet but I heard that this place was offering services in their outdoor space-socially distant & masked. I made an appointment with Diana and she revived my droopy split ends with a crisp cut on a beautiful day in their back yard. They will wash your hair indoors, masked, if you like. Otherwise you can get it cut dry, or they'll spray you or you can come in with it freshly shampooed. Whichever you like. I normally don't like the way my usual (more expensive) salon blows out my hair. Diana gave me a great blow out without it looking too "styled." Reminder: if you're able tip more than 20%, please do it. It's a tough time for Brooklyn (& outside Brooklyn) small businesses. read more

The place looks nice. A convenient spot really. I've only had one experience so I'm not sure if it's fair to judge the entire salons. I have 3b/3c curls, I've seen pictures from this salon of ppl with my hair and they look beautiful. My hair was a Bob cut (straight) and looked super crazy curly. So wanted some layers basically. I had Betty who was the only hairstylist available at the time I wanted who apparently knows how to do curly hair. She seemed nice. Showed her examples of what I want and what I didn't want. And got what I didn't want. If not, worse. In my opinion, she can handle Type 2 curls, nothing curlier. Like she legit did not have the knowledge in how to do my hair. I guess I should have a gotten a different stylist? I don't know. But I'm definitely not coming back... I did my best in trying to express myself politely. I don't have great water at my house and being blonde, I will often get my hair JUST washed at a salon. This is probably not a favorite activity for a stylist looking to make money but it takes 5 minutes of your time. I do pay the salon for the service and tip the stylist who does the hair washing. There is no excuse for me getting home to find that you did not wash all the soap/conditioner out of my hair. I won't be back for any kind of service. read more

I had a great experience with Betty! I called the day before for an emergency hair coloring and she came in to the salon 2 hours early to accommodate my schedule! She was so informative with what she was applying to my hair throughout the process. I'm very happy with the color she provided to my curls! I'm very particular with where I go to get my hair colored because of the sensitivity of my natural curls and she did an amazing job. First time trying out this Salon since moving to Park Slope! First let's start off by making an appointment: it was super simple, I called earlier in the morning and got an appointment for the same day at 230! Next, I showed up around 10 mins early checked in and waited to be seen, everything ran smoothly and was on time! Now my only reason for giving 4 stars instead of 5 was due to my hair wash. THIS IS MY FAVORITE PART ABOUT GOING TO GET MY HAIR DONE... so when it only lasted 5 or soo minutes I was pretty bummed bc It felt rushed and not relaxing. And again the scalp massage is my favorite part. As for the woman who cut, blow dried and styled my hair; SOLID 5/5!! I believe her name was Elisa (first chair, blonde hair), she was magnificent!! Excellent rapport, good since of humor and she continuously had me smiling!! My blowout was amazing and I never once felt her pulling on my hair. I went in for a trim and she cut roughly 1.5 to 2 inches off and my hair feels ridiculously healthy. I will defintely be going back to see her again! read more

First time visit and first haircut since March due to covid. They have an outdoor space for haircuts and color....it was SO cute, like a little meditation garden. Hand sanitizer before you walk in, plastic barriers for reception and between the indoor stations. I was a little early and was able to sit in the outdoor garden. It was so peaceful I actually started meditating. Hair wash was inside, she wore a face shield. Haircut outside he wore a mask and so did I. He did a great job, cutting off months of dead growth while keeping it long. Came here because they offer outdoor cuts. The backyard is beautiful and impeccably kept. Diana did a great job cutting my curls. I did a regular (non-Deva) cut. It's a little shorter than I wanted but it works great with my texture so I don't mind. Very reasonable prices too. Would recommend. read more

UPDATE: I am so disappointed to change my 5 star review to a 2 star. I wasn't even planning on writing a negative review about my last experience, but honestly it's still bugging me almost two months later so feel the need... To give some context, I've been dying my own hair for about 15 years and have been bleaching it myself for about 5 years. I know the quality of my hair is poor, but I change the color frequently and just can't afford to always have it professionally done. Every salon I've ever gone to has made comments about my hair that make me feel ashamed and uncomfortable, which is why I was originally SO happy to find Alice. I had her cut my hair several times and she never once made a comment about it. That is until I actually went in to get my hair dyed. I was getting married in a couple of weeks and wanted a specific color that I was having a hard time doing myself. When I sat down in the chair, she started running her fingers through my hair. I'm watching her in the mirror with a disgusted look on her face and she just kept saying over and over "why do you do this?" (rhetorically). She would need to lighten it more and was worried the damage would be too much - as in my hair may fall out. She checked with her manager and came back to say they just couldn't do it, but do I want a hair cut? No, I don't. I want to not be shamed. I understand if it's policy - that's fine, I've heard it before. It was how the whole thing went down. The new space is real tiny so I felt that everyone there heard what was happening and I had to leave 5 minutes after I sat down with my head hanging low and feeling SO embarrassed. The whole thing would have been fine if she was just nicer about the whole thing, maybe even offer recommendations on how to improve my hair quality or something. Just. Disappointing. read more

I came to Michael for the first time because they were doing outdoor cuts, and the place I normally go is very tiny and I was concerned about being in there for an extended period, especially because there often are men inside getting shaves without masks. Based on Yelp reviews, I booked an appointment with Diana. It was a great experience from start to finish. Bookings can be done right from the salon website. They have a big backyard with a covered porch area, and chairs set up in both spots. All the stations are pretty far apart. Diana was super friendly and she gave me a great haircut that will be easy to care for. It felt great to shed 7 months of hair growth. The cost for cut and blow dry was $57 (there is a discount for cash). I washed my hair right before, so I don't know if they charge more for a wash. I absolutely will be back to see Diana for my next cut. read more

The best thing that happened to my hair is that I was forced to change salons during the pandemic when my old stylist refused to get vaccinated.
