When I decided to finally pursue getting a facelift, I knew I needed to do my research since one hears about surgeries that go so very wrong. Starting with Orange Coast magazine"s Best doctors of Orange County, I saw Dr. Sundine's name. I liked that he was in the listing and that he had an office in Irvine among others. Then I began researching him on the internet. His credentials are impressive. So I decided to see what our first would tell me. I was and remain impressed by the attention of his assistant, Toni. I arrived on a rainy day. Immediately towels were brought out to dry off. She is very conscientious and caring. I then met Dr, Sundine. I already knew that he is an accomplished surgeon and an intelligent man. After explaining what he believed he could do for me surgically, he pressed me to ask him questions until I was satisfied that I knew what to expect. Toni explained the fees. They were reasonable for a full facelift. She explained aftercare extensively. I left the first visit feeling confident I had made a good, informed choice. The surgery went smoothly. I was well cared for. The results are all I could have hoped for. I am thrilled to look in the mirror and see a younger, firmer, happier face looking back at me. I truly can't brag enough about the care I received at Dr. Sundine's hands. He is a fine, caring accomplished surgeon and a fine caring man. I had a very disappointing and upsetting experience with this surgeon. I eventually went to him to fix a breathing problem, but not only did he fail to improve it--he actually made it worse. After surgery, my nose became noticeably larger, and I now can't wear glasses because they leave a dent on the bridge of my nose. My nose also feels completely unsupported and unstable--it shifts to the right or left with no visible structure or firmness, as if there's no proper cartilage or bone inside. This has caused me both physical and emotional distress. To make matters worse, his front office is extremely unresponsive--they rarely reply to messages or calls. Even more concerning, the doctor refused to see me after the six-month post-op mark, leaving me with no follow-up care or answers. Wow!!! I just spoke to the receptionist, and I am in shock of how rude she was being. This woman definitely hates her job and I have no idea why she's even working there. I have nothing but positive things to say about Dr. Sundine, his office manager Toni, and the entire team at Newport Coast Surgical Institute, where my procedure was performed. I was referred to Dr. Sundine by my dermatologist, whose bedside manner left much to be desired, and I am incredibly grateful for that referral. From my very first appointment, I felt at ease. Toni greeted me warmly and was so kind and calming--exactly what I needed, as I was understandably nervous about discussing a treatment plan for a sizable basal cell carcinoma on my cheek. After filling out the necessary paperwork, Dr. Sundine came in to assess the situation. His bedside manner is truly exceptional--1000/10. He took the time to listen to my concerns, thoroughly explained my options, and reassured me about the surgical approach. He specifically detailed how he would align the scar with the natural contours of my face, and he delivered exactly as promised. The scar follows the natural lines from the side of the bridge of my nose down to my smile lines, just as he described. (I'll share follow-up photos once it has fully healed.) Dr. Sundine has the credentials and peer reviews that you look for in a plastic surgeon but, In my opinion you also get a Dr. and staff that takes the extra time from your initial consultation all the way through post-op care and beyond. We were referred by our ENT to repair my son's deviated septum. (He waited over 10 years to fix due to his young age). He is thrilled with his results and can finally breathe through his nose. I was on the fence about fixing a previous rhinoplasty myself after seeing my son's results I decided to have Dr. Sundine perform my revision rhinoplasty. I received such a bad Rhinoplasty from him. Tip of the nose developed a HUGE bump on it which made it look so crooked looking at it straight on, my dorsal bump was still completely noticeable after the year of recovery. He also made my nose look soooooo long from the side. He tried to prop it up to look cute but added way too much to it and my nose was so badly done I was embarrassed to go out. Also have a little dent in the side of my nose that was NEVER there before. So bad. DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE PICKING A PLASTIC SURGEON!!!!!!! The staff here is absolutely deplorable. I received a referral from my son's pediatrician for a consultation with Dr. Sundine to check on a skin cyst he's had since birth. I called Dr. Sundine's office several times and was taken to voicemail; finally I left a message to schedule an appointment. The receptionist called me back saying they never received a referral but scheduled the appointment anyway, saying she'd email me so I could share my insurance info and send along the referral for verification. I never received an email. I called three more times, every time getting sent to voicemail. When someone finally called me back, I was immediately dismissed. She told me to check the website to get "all the info I needed." I took off work and drove from Los Angeles to attend the appointment that was scheduled only to find out upon arrival that Dr. Sundine would not see us due to my insurance. This could've easily been remedied if the staff had actually followed up with me like they promised. They literally cost me time and money. I was excited to get a referral and an appointment to see Dr. Sundine based upon what I read and they were very nice and accommodating setting up the appointment as they had a cancellation. I am retired from almost 50 years in the medical profession working in multiple hospitals, O.R.s and private practice. I have also had, unfortunately, more than my share of surgeries and procedures over the years so I have experience from both sides. Upon meeting Dr. Sundine in the late morning, he looked tired and appeared to have come from a morning surgery. He was very curt and explained little, but he did listen (I thought) during our roughly 5 minute visit where he examined one of the areas. I have 4-8 regions where Basal cell carcinomas needed removal and was seeing him for the initial 4 areas and was surprised when he only wanted to do 2 at a time, but it was his call. We discussed local versus general anesthesia and I told him local would be fine so I would not have to arrange for a driver to take me home. I saw where his office called me while I was driving home and missed the call as my phone was set to vibrate still from the visit. I called a little later after I got home and saw I missed the call. I had to leave a message as nobody picked up. Later that afternoon, I was contacted by email by a surgery center to complete paperwork which I began, but had to stop when they requested the date of surgery as I had none. I was told at the visit that they would need to request authorization for the procedure which I was fully expecting. I never received a callback from Dr. Sundine's office, but a few days ago, several weeks after our visit, I received an automated message from my insurance saying there was an authorization approved for Dr. Sundine so I expected them to contact me. Imagine my surprise when the surgery center contacted me on Friday to inform me I had to be there Monday at 6am and that they would contact my ride home when I was ready. After a couple attempts to reach Dr,. Sundine's office including the Surgery Center coordinator likely contacting them through back channels, the office calls me. When I relate my surprise that the procedure was Monday and that I had not spoken to them since the initial visit, I was told a story about how I wanted to get this done ASAP and how grateful I was to have it scheduled for 10/30. Hmmm; seems I would recall that and would have noted it. Next, I asked about the anesthesia as I reiterated that I might have difficulty getting a driver on short notice and asked if it could be done without knocking me out as we had discussed. Instead of asking, she said that is the way he does it since he has access to an anesthesiologist. She then said we would reschedule and mentioned a 2-3 month wait. I reiterated that I was fine with a local and mentioned that I was not very happy with how this was going. This was when she told me we are "obviously not a good fit" and told me to find another surgeon. He may be a very good surgeon, but communication was poor, and his staff was essentially implying that I am making all this up and cannot remember. Btw, this is my first negative review :( read more

He did my surgery at Athenix for chin implant. My chin still very short, not even. My jawline is uneven. My face big on 1 side over the other side. My mouth not even. My smile not even. My double chin was supposed to be gone, still there. When I smile my face right side is bigger than left. My smile lines supposed to be gone be cause he pull my skin to behind ears. WORST receptionist ever! She WON'T return calls. She was rude, dismissive, and takes WEEKS for her to return a call. I've never before encountered such an incompetent and unpleasent receptionist. If your office staff makes it impossible to schedule an appointment and if they thwart your ability to be seen by the doctor, or to have basic questions answered, that seems a massive detriment to the office and to the doctor. The doctor, himself, may be wonderful and exceptional, but the receptionist/office staff makes it impossible to ever find out. She was unkind and demeaning. I have been Dr. Sundine's patient in 2013. Both he and Toni Otero are very nice until they get your money. He did a terrible job and won't stand behind his work. He overestimates his abilities. First time we reffred to Dr. Sundine, when my daughter was only 5 months old, and he performed first surgery to her when she was 6 months old. Had multiple surgeries to remove her birthmark on her right eye, or should I say 1/3 of her right side of her face? Now she left only less than 10% from what she originally had. So thankful to be able to find such a great doctor; not only skillfull/highly trained to deal with young baby, but also have excellent bedside manner. Our insurance no longer has him on contract, but Toni, made everything possible to get my daughter to see Dr. Sundine again. Here's a doctor and an office that really gets it. Dr. Sundine knows his stuff (he's board certified in plastic surgery), but he's also down-to-earth enough to understand things from the patient's perspective and explain things in terms that everyone can understand. For example, when I didn't understand the anatomy of the nose, he not only explained it, he drew it all out on paper and showed me each step of the process. He never seems rushed and has patiently worked through every one of my questions throughout multiple visits. Also, I'm really impressed that Dr. Sundine is so committed to his patients that he gives out his cell number in case there's a problem. He even interrupted his vacation to take my call and get me fixed up. His office is also extraordinarily well run. Toni keeps everything running smoothly. In 15 or so visits, I've never had to wait more than a couple minutes and usually she just brings me directly into an exam room. Here too, there's seldom a wait for Dr. Sundine. When it comes to scheduling procedures at one of the surgery centers, Toni makes everything straightforward, not just giving out forms and directions, but also coordinating medications and explaining how each step of the process will work. Plus, she's compassionate and seems to genuinely care about the patients, just like Dr. Sundine. I wish I could give Dr. Sundine and his staff 100 stars! A little over a year ago we found out our daughter was going to be born with a cleft lip. It was so stressful to know how to move forward and who to turn to for information. Our pediatrician recommended Dr. Sundine right off the bat and we are sooooo grateful he did! Our daughter had her cleft lip repair in April 2016. To say Dr. Sundine is a miracle worker is an understatement. He and his staff were SO friendly, extremely knowledge, and made us feel comfortable from day 1. We were completely blown away with the results from the surgery! He fixed our daughter's nose AND lip in ONE surgery (most doctors do it in two which builds up scar tissue). My 6 year old was at legoland and cut his upper lip pretty bad and it required stitches...our pediatrician recommended Dr. Sundine...he was so accommodating (and his nurses). Dr. Michael Sundine to the Rescue... I have found myself wanting to yell from the roof tops! I needed "botox and laser treatment for spider veins" with Dr. Sundine and I LOVE my results. Being in outside sales, it's always critical to provide a great first impression! I've always been active and find myself outside often; even with proper use of sunscreen, I found over time I noticed my skin seemed aged and I noticed smaller "spider like" veins forming on my cheeks and nose area. I thought that this was just a part of aging and had noticed that similar family members had the same situation. His body surgery was questionable at best... ... resulting in excess loose skin (even though I never lost more than 5 to 10 pounds) and a medical problem. He always was extremely nice, friendly and professional-- -- although somewhat oddly passive aggressive. I will explain: His wife Toni was his RN, receptionist and office manager-- -- in fact his only employee other than an occasional college student. Usually she was pleasant and friendly. but often moody and bossy. One day I fell, injured my face and landed in the ER for 3 hours. Two weeks later I phoned Dr. Sundine's office to drain the hematoma.. Toni refused to book an appointment because "he doesn' t accept Medicare" (even though I offered to pay cash}. She then said: "Why are you such a "hateful -----" and hung up! The next day I received a registered letteri stating that I was no longer his patient due to my recent behavior. He performed the surgery at CHOC when she was 13 months old and she is now 7 weeks post-op and doing beautifully. My 10 year old foster daughter was referred here by dermatology. After waiting over 1 month for an appointment we walked in to an empty office. We were immediately put into a room where the dr walked in 2 minutes later. Examined her, answered our questions and agreed that this painful cyst needed to be removed. We felt extremely comfortable with this Dr! Unfortunately she has MediCal, so we need to wait for an approval. Toni, who is the front office witch, let us know we would get a call in about 2-3 weeks, and rushed us out. That was June 29th. August 5th, after leaving numerous messages with the exchange, she finally answered! I told her I was calling to see if they have received approval from the insurance. She said her insurance was expired. So, instead of calling me, she just ignored it! I then let her know that there was a glitch in the system for a couple days, but everything was fine. I told her she should have called me and she stated that it wasn't her problem...I then said "well, I left messages", she stated " your not urgent" SO UNPROFESSIONAL!!! Must be because my foster daughter has MediCal!! I asked her to please put it through again. She said she needed the new card info, I explained that it was the same. She said she did not have the chart, so give her the ID number. I gave it to her, she asked for my call back number, said she will look into it and HUNG UP! Unfortunately there is no other Plastic Surgeon that accepts this insurance, or we WOULD go elsewhere! It's very unfortunate that such a wonderful Dr has rude, incompetent staff, that obviously can't and shouldn't deal with people! Today is August 11, and still no return call from Toni. A Terrible Experience to say the least. (Should have known when the finance lady was negotiating price that this was not a great choice. Regardless, may 2015 I went in for an augmentation and possibly a lift. Dr. Sundine said to avoid additional scaring he could just move the nipple up a bit so the breast appears to be lifted. (I truly do thank you for that).. moving on... after the surgery which I assumed went well it was nearly impossible to get ahold of the man. My stitches started to come out (not uncommon just needs to be addressed) but he blew me off and said they will heal just fine. WRONG!! My areoles are TWICE the size the we're before surgery do to stretching of the skin. Also I have a large dark spot where the stitches had come out... I've waited a long and fair amount of time to do this review (3years to be exact) so I don't expect my nipples to shrink or lighten. But the scars are horrible. I am baffled - I've interviewed about six different plastic surgeons and I was so very excited because he had the best ideas and I loved everything he had to say - but when I followed up trying to get more information about the choice I had of surgical locations - I never heard back and I've been calling the office over and over again at various times for four weeks! Years ago I had a sports accident that broke my nose. Recently I was having trouble breathing and sleeping. Dr. Sundine reconstructed my nose using a small part of my rib. Just stop reading and trust Dr. Sundine. My experiences with Dr. Sundine are the only time I have been compelled to write reviews. He gave my 1 1/2 year old the gift of speech and has changed our lives forever. My daughter had a lip hemangioma and health insurance wanted to treat her with medication. After a year and a half with the medication, we were frustrated and our child wasn't progressing. We were blessed enough to know someone who knew of Dr. Sundine and his work. We made the sacrifice to drop our insurance and go to Dr. Sundine. Little did we know that "sacrifice" would be our greatest blessing. Two days after her surgery to remove some of the hemangioma, she was speaking in sentences. She went from frustrated grunting, to articulating her thoughts in fully formed ideas. Dr. Sundine explained all of the possible outcomes so that we were ready for any potential future treatment. Fast forward 3 years. She is happy and has normal speech development. However, she has uncomfortable swelling and discoloration in her lip. We have great health insurance and moved out of California, but there wasn't a hesitation when we needed to come back to see Dr. Sundine to determine next steps. He not only remembered us after 3 years and spent a generous amount of time with us, but he explained that our babe's hemangioma had resolved, but she still had a venous malformation. He explained (with diagram, in writing thank goodness) what was going on. He humbly suggested we talk to our primary care doctor to clinically diagnose what he said and to provide treatment. I brought his diagram and words to my primary care doctor. She agreed with Dr Sundine's diagnosis, and appreciated his recommendation for a specialist in our area. read more

A consult will costs you $150 upfront; and is non reimbursable. I'm sure Dr Sundine is a great surgeon by all accounts. But the follow up and customer service is pretty much non-existent. After my initial consult and fee, there was not a peep from the office. I could call and inquire but I figured if the coordinator is uninterested in a follow up what interest would they have in helping me. read more

I read the reviews and didn't think what others said about this being an unprofessional office could be possible for a medical office. I consulted 3 doctors and selected Dr. Sundine to do my surgery as I had confidence in his skills and liked what he said about the surgery. After 2 weeks of pre-op tests, my sister arriving from out of town to stay for a week to help me, time scheduled to be off work, and everything in order at home, Toni called me less than 24 hrs. before surgery and said she cancelled my surgery. She offered to refer me to another Dr. in my insurance network which totally confused me. I received a call from my insurance carrier 3 hours after she notified me about the cancellation. They gave me the surgery center address and reminded me of my time for surgery. I had commented to Toni earlier about her Yelp reviews after she changed appt. times in her book without changing them with me and telling me when I arrived that I was there at the wrong time. Other than that one time, I was really nice to her but it didn't work and I am horrified that she would decide at the last minute to cancel my surgery, not postpone it, flat out cancel it. NEVER in my lifetime have I experienced such an unprofessional office with doors locked, calls not returned as everything goes to an answering service, and cancelling a surgery. I am the type who keeps appointments promptly and does everything by the book. I left a message for the Dr. asking him to explain and got no response from him. I would never have cancelled the surgery but maybe it worked out for the best and I can find a more professional medical office. Who knows if she would have allowed me to see the doctor for follow up or worse if there had been any complications. She controls the office and is the only person there besides the doctor and the doors are generally locked with nobody there and only an answering service who says they are in the office until 5 pm but they aren't really there in the office. I'm sorry that I didn't have my breast reconstruction surgery after all the preparation and want to warn others that it could happen to anyone if it happened to me as I am the easiest person in the world to have for a patient. Maybe his practice at CHOC keeps him in business rather than having private patients. I wish him the best without having a good office staff. read more

Dr sunshine removed a cyst on my scalp and never told me it would kill the hair follicles and give me a bold spot. After a couple of month I called and was told it takes about a year for regrowth but that never happened when I called to make an appointment the secretary was very rude and hung up on me. It's very unprofessional of her as well as a dr who hires someone like her to represent him. I am going to find a good lawyer to find out if I can Persue this procedure . So from my experience please find another doctor. all the good reviews are probably people who know him and know how important Yelp is. He is just in it for the money he gets from your procedures then your out on the street with no follow up or getting a call back... Very unethical and unprofessional office with the worst staff ... read more
