I cannot say enough good things about this office. I am 20 and was absolutely terrified to have my wisdom teeth out but knew I had to get it done. The staff and Dr. La Puma calmed my nerves even after just my consultation. Dr. La Puma performed a single dental implant surgery in 2015 on my upper premolar (#13) tooth as the result of a failed crown, my only crown. I'm reminded of this disastrous procedure daily when I wake up to a numb (paraesthesia) left cheek, lip, nostril, and most significantly my lower eyelid which compels me to press my eye closed for comfort and has the odd sensation that my eyeball is unattached to its socket. The infra orbital nerve, the sensory nerve for these areas was damaged by the surgery. A UCLA dental pain specialist believes the numbing agent (lidocaine) was the cause of the nerve damage. The trauma of an unexpected second procedure could also be the culprit. Immediately following the surgery (I opted to be awake) an xray revealed that the just installed implant was too short and would have to be removed and replaced by a longer one. La Puma explained later that "the little mushroom shaped tooth" adjacent to the implant would not allow for the abutment to get past the curve and seat properly. Didn't the impressions show that?? Throughout post-op there was a lack of sensation in my face. La Puma said my symptoms "didn't anatomically make sense," he believed "something else physiologically was going on," and claimed "I know I didn't sever the nerve." The implication being the cause was MY issue and he had no culpability. And according to his medical waiver he doesn't which states "numbness may be irreversible, [and]....any liability imposed by "short" implants will be my responsibility." Words of advice, carefully vet having dental implants and choosing your oral surgeon. I do give a star to his front desk ladies who are very nice. read more

I was always nervous about having to get my wisdom teeth removed, but thanks to Dr. La Puma & his staff I felt very informed on what to expect from my procedure & reassured. I chose IV sedation because I didn't want to hear anything, and I did not hear anything at all- I don't even recall any of my procedure other than coming in, and then leaving. I had clear and helpful post op instructions, and my wisdom teeth removal with IV sedation went very smoothly. I even healed well, & overall had a wonderful experience with this office! I believe this Dr. is competent, but I experienced some serious mansplaining with this medical professional. My "sedation IV" left me aware enough to hear the conversation and know what was going on during the whole procedure. When I asked about this later I was told "I don't know what to tell you hon." I did not feel well informed about the details of the procedure or what to expect afterward. They get you in and out fast, but if you want reassurance or more than a basic explanation of your procedure you might leave feeling - as if your questions and concerns are explained at at 3rd grade level in 30 seconds or less. What really got me was my anxiety about being awake during a sedated procedure - "I don't know what to tell you hon." Yea, that did not sit well. read more

There's honestly not enough nice things I could say about the people who work in this building Dr La Puma and his staff are incredibly nice GenTeel and knowledgeable. During the surgery he continued to reassure me and comfort me.his nursing staff was amazing and the girls are very sweet but also very knowledgeable and are obviously a great asset to Dr La Puma's office his front desk staff those ladies are just sweet as pie but they are also very professional and also very knowledgeable they are on their A game and I truly appreciate them, I was very apprehensive at first. But after meeting with Dr La Puma and listening to him explain about my implants and what to expect and what's to come I left his office feeling very safe very informed and truly excited about the change I am getting ready to make. I am missing a lot of teeth and it affects my smile and it affects my self-esteem. Dr La Puma is actually giving me another outlook on life and for that I am will always be grateful. I've had my bone graft done today it's only been two hours and I can't feel any pain at all usually there is at least pain at the injection site for the numbing agent. But with Dr.La Puma .it's fine there's no excessive bleeding in fact my bleeding has stopped. They looked after me the whole time actually made me feel safe. I elected to have the minimum pain relief so they just gave me a shot just like my dentist does when he does crown work, etc. I felt like I was in good hands and one week later I'm back to normal. We had taken two of our daughters to Dr. LaPuma's office. We found him to be competent and he did a good enough job. He was also friendly. Unfortunately where the tooth was pulled became infected worse and she ended up with an abscess. Dapheny (one of the staff) insisted we drop everything and bring our daughter in to be seen. When I explained that was not possible she actually state. "Well then what do you want us to do about it?" Not acceptable or professional. I had to stop the conversation and tell her, " to stop being rude." Do to this treatment we had all of our kids records transferred to another office. We will not be going back. read more

I highly recommend Dr La Puma. He recently put in implants for two teeth that I am missing. He worked closely with my orthodontist, Dr. Garrett, and my dentist, Dr. Fitch, to make this happen. So I had a great time meeting the doctor I felt vey safe as if I was in safe hands, love the office it's beautiful. So I made appt for a an extraction my mom got Ina horrible car accident and I couldn't make it.... In fact I couldn't even call because the of type of car accident my mom got in. I remember The front office calling back to re schedule and I was in such distraught from my mom that I don't even think I could even say anything to the front desk. So finally my mom is in better Health and I called and the front desk women told she would call me back the next day two days go by I call again and the front desk women "rosa" told me they would call me back again and I asked her should get a new doctor due to the fact that they aren't letting make an appt the she says well you didn't show to your appt and I explained why and she still said uhhhh well... And honestly that really makes me upset because life happens and people have good and bad times. I paid for my no show and everything too. I was a bit distraught that Matt Kim DDS office nurse referred me to three of their favorite oral surgeons in SLO. So I called the first on the list. I needed two extractions, an imbedded upper and a lower infected tooth. It took three long painful weeks to finally see Dr La Puma. But he was worth the wait. I incurred no pain, no swelling, minimal bleeding. His bedside manner is superb and comforting. My only regret is that he did not wish to make impressions and make me flippers to cover my missing teeth. So I went down to LA to see another DDS whose husband teaches making and fitting dentures in a local dental school.
