Unknowledgable, unprofessional and extremely rude personnel (specifically, a woman named Yadira, who claimed to be the manager). First of all, it took me 2 weeks to get someone on the phone. Left multiple voice messages, but no one ever called me back. Secondly, I was referred to this office by another orthopedist (Dr. KATZ, MD), and the receptionist told me that they can't schedule an appointment until I get an X-ray or CT and physically bring the pictures with me. They cannot schedule any images/test, but require the patient to bring the images with them. When I asked who would schedule images, they told me - your primary or another orthopedic who referred you. I have to figure it out, and there is nothing that they can do to help. read more

Horrible surgeon. I had a knee injury in 2016 and he did surgery on it in 2017 and made it ten times worse. I am now 56 and have had knee pain every single day since he did the surgery. Other surgeons agree he didn't do what I needed and now I have to tough it out or get a knee replacement. Which they say I may need three in my lifetime since they only last about 15 years and the success of total knee's diminishes every time they perform that kind of surgery. I had also heard he had many total hip replacements that popped out and I'm very surprised he is still doing any operations at all. Terrible MD. I would have given no stars if it let me. read more

Really am so impressed with this office every time I need to visit! I've been a patient for 5-6 years now. I am riddled with osteoarthritis everywhere. I'm very happy to have found this practice. Dr Shapiro performed a knee arthroscopy on me in August 2022 that went well and healed quickly. He just did a total hip replacement June 2023 that has truly been a blessing that saved me! I lived in constant pain all day everyday. Immediately after the surgery I had way less pain that before. It's been 6 wks since, and I'm extremely happy to say I haven't been able to move around like this in years!! THR was a game changer in my life. Great quality of care! Great information & follow ups when needed. Truly am sooooo grateful to Dr Shapiro & everyone. His staff is amazing to work with - from the front desk to back office!!! Christi, his awesome nurse, surgical scheduler & practice coordinator is wonderful & a real gem! I'm sorry to say but Dr. Shapiro needed to retire about 10 years ago. He replaced my right hip about 6 years ago. It dislocated 11 times after. ELEVEN. I finally had my old surgeon from 2007 Dr. Gregg Sobeck fix it for me and he told me that it was "totally misaligned". Dr. Sobeck is AMAZING he actually guaranteed me that it would never dislocate again. It's been 3 years, and it hasn't! I went through almost 3 years of HELL because of this. A friend of mine who also had a hip replacement by Dr. Shapiro over 2 years ago is STILL having issues with her hip and infections!! Please do your research before you let this guy cut you. Ok so Dr Shapiro is a nice man and he is intelligent. However his skills in the OR are not great. There's so many patients who have messed up legs after surgery. So many revisions after surgery are needed! Avoid! He should know his limits. It's not ethical. If you're going for a joint replacement please do yourself a favor and go elsewhere unless you want additional surgery for revision. We've learned our lesson the hard way. I am having significate popping and moving of the tendon and pain in the entire area and it is too painful for me to walk without my cane. Subsequent to my surgery, I learned of the butcher job he did on my friend's sister (her review is above, Elizabeth Smith). I will be writing letters to: The State Medical Board; Blue Shield; Providence and the Head of Tarzana Hospital (where he practices). After a terrible skiing injury my ACL and PCL ripped 1/3rd of my tibia off and shoved it under my knee cap. Later I found out that only 2 cases like this had ever been documented. I was in a lot of pain and scared. I was fortunate to have Dr Shapiro do my surgery and follow up care. From the first call Yadira was able to get me into an appointment then schedule everything needed for the surgery. It was comforting not having to worry about all the little details when my life just flipped upside down. The surgery went great and he was there after I woke up with a great bedside manner assuring me everything went as planned and I would be back to my active lifestyle soon. The follow up appointments had steady progress along with the physical therapy and it was actually nice go into the office appointments to see the familiar staff who was so helpful and caring and let them know how much I appreciated their personal touch. Dr. Shapiro did a FANTASTIC job on repairing my shoulder. I had a bad fall and actually tore my muscle away from my shoulder and the muscle retracted. He was able to successfully reattach the muscle. My other shoulder will need surgery after the first heals. And, yes I'll go back to Dr. Shapiro. The nurses and receptionist staff are a mess. They are telling people one appointment then putting you down for another. When you show up they have you wait in the car for over 30 to and 1hr just to let you know your appointment is not on today's schedule. If you call to try to find out what happened they are super rude, they don't care to lose the business and tell you to go see another Orthopedic Specialist. I don't recommend this practice at this time and people are right to say if you can't treat people with care in the medical field you should not be working there... The doctor might be okay but the first impressions were terrible. I cancelled my appointment and left. 1. Material breaches of nondisclosures. Parking isn't free. Only recently does parking accept major credit cards. $2.15 / 15 minutes (!!!) adds up fast when you'll likely be stuck here two hours. The doctor doesn't validate. 2. Parking lot is very tight too get a van into. Narrow entrance and odd back up a distance before getting turned around to leave. 3. I think it was two handicap spaces for thee multifloor building! Is this even to code? 4. You go down a ramp to get in building and I doubt a wheelchair could make the tight turns. Upstairs 1. They body stack in the tiny lobby. Patient flow is very poorly managed. There shouldn't be about 15-20 patients still waiting to be seen at a time slot just before lunch. 2. Staff is rude and snappish. When I asked about parking validation, I was told it was "patients responsibility to ask about parking when they call, not their responsibility to inform patients there is a fee." 3. I asked about how long the wait would be. Told the doctor was running behind at least a half hour. And yes all those people were ahead of me. 4. I asked how long after I'm in the room. Told that the doctor varies from 5 minutes to a half hour or longer. I asked do they book in say 15 minute increments or? Told it varies. You just wait and when he gets to you you are seen. 5. Waiting area is dirty. I'm a strong believer from experience if the front end is poorly managed the doctor is either not a very good business person or short staffed. He has too many people working in a tight cramped area. The place screams something is just "off." I left. read more

I broke my foot in Europe and had plates and screws in my ankle. I went for a follow up to Dr. Shapiro 2 weeks after my surgery. He Brushed me off fast, was not attentive in any way, or explanatory about anything. Most importantly, he took off my cast and did not put another one or even a boot, contrary to me telling him that I am hurting and that my doctor said that I have to have a cast for a whole 6 weeks, which is also normal practice after ankle surgery. Long story short, I was in excruciating pain crying all night and the next morning I had to go to the emergency room so that they can put a splint on my leg and they were baffled how any doctor would take off someone's cast and leave them unprotected like that just 2 weeks after serious surgery...That is purely sadistic behavior and complete lack of empathy to say the least. She needs to do her work and shut her big mouth and not question what the doctor does or says. I ask to speak to the doctor and she refused. I had to keep calling back until I got someone else on the phone and even left messages with the answering service. The DR did call me back. I feel so bad for him having a employee like this. I'm not one to write bad reviews but this doctor and his front receptionist are just awful and so rude. I literally left this appointment in tears after this horrible experience. There were 2 receptionists. One (who brought me back) was super sweet and very helpful but the other one the way she talks to patients who call in is horrendous. I have tons of respect for doctors and nurses in the medical field as a lot of my family are in the medical field as well but the level of rudeness I received here at this office in Encino was disgusting. Not only was I seen an hour after my appointment time but the doctor didn't care at all about my level of pain, saw me for literally 30 seconds and told me to leave. Didn't examine my fractured elbow at all. I asked him if I'll ever be able to extend my arm again and all he said was "I don't know, I'm not a fortune teller and I don't have a Crystal ball" and shrugged his shoulders. DO NOT LET DR. SHAPIRO PERFORM SURGERY ON YOU! Dr Shapiro performed an ACL replacement on me 3 years ago. He sounded extremely knowledgeable and confident prior to the surgery. This being my second ACL (in my other knee), I knew all of the questions to ask and what to expect. From the moment I woke up from surgery, things never really felt right. I went through all of my rehab and took every precaution in my recovery, each time I went back to Dr. Shapiro's office, I asked about the issues I was having and he assured me it was all part of the recovery. To make a long story short, 3 years later, my knee aches all of the time and I need to get a new ACL replacement. Dr Shapiro used a inadequate tendon, which has shredded in less than 3 years. 2 other doctors have confirmed that the surgery he performed was not acceptable. I hope this saves someone from the hassle I've been through. read more

Please please please stay away from this guy. I had Shapiro repair my ruptured patellar tendon a year ago and I can't even tell you the hell its been since I left the hospital. I am 45 years old and fit. No prior medical issues. After the surgery, I developed a DVT (blood clot) which I am still taking blood thinners for today. Of course he blames it on something else. Mind you I never even heard of DVT until this happened. Post op appointments were very unsatisfying. His office is packed with people and you are lucky if he gives you 5 minutes of his time to express concerns or ask questions. It literally feels like a factory where they're trying to get through people as quickly as possible. I had many concerns and issues that I was experiencing and he always had the same reply. "you just had major surgery, its going to take time" Fast forward to 4 months of PT and not progressing, I started regressing and swelling would not go down. Finally decided to have an MRI done which clearly showed the tendon is still torn and when I took the report and images to Shapiro, he claimed the radiologist doesn't know what he's talking about. Finally switched from HMO to PPO and was able to go see some heavy hitters who all confirmed he botched the surgery and a revision surgery is needed. So almost year to the date of the 1st surgery, I finally had my revision surgery done at Kerlan-Jobe Institute. Night and day experience to say the least.... Just a quick insight of the mess Dr. Daniel Kharrazi had to work with... My knee cap was sitting an inch higher than the proper placement. Where the knee cap should have been was an enormous amount of scar tissue that needed to be removed. Also, grafting tissue from a cadaver was required for this repair... I mean, I can go on and on about the mess Shapiro created and the hell my life has been this past year. You get the idea. Stay away from this guy. PLEASE. You want a real surgeon, go see Dr. Kharrazi. read more

Dr. Shapiro gave me back an active life. The arthritis in my right shoulder had ultimately progressed to the point where I almost could not use my right arm. I am right handed. I could not reach up on the shelf to get a coffee cup, I barely could drive, had to give up golf, can't begin to tell you all the things in day to day life I was no longer able to do. The pain became so bad at times it brought tears to my eyes. The solution full and complete shoulder replacement. Dr. Michael Shapiro performed the surgery December 14 and here we are in May 2019 and I am back to normal. Literally a miracle. Dr. Michael Shapiro is an incompetent doctor. I came to his office March 2018 with a full ACL tear in my left knee. I was told by Dr. Shapiro that I did not need surgery to repair this injury, and I should consider a little physical therapy to make it feel better. For those who don't know, A 100% TORN ACL DOES NOT HEAL ON ITS OWN WITHOUT SURGERY. He sloughed me off because I was "young" and "shouldn't have to get surgery". Dr. Shapiro has a condescending demeanor, he said I "shouldn't have such a bad knee injury, especially at such a young age". Because Dr. Shapiro refused to help me, I have lived in AGONIZING HELL OF PAIN barely able to walk for the past 2.5 years. I'm barely 30 years old. Two and a half years later, I saw a new orthopedic doctor who's jaw dropped when they saw that my prior doctor said that I did NOT need surgery to repair my ACL. I'm now getting the surgery I should have gotten 2.5 years ago. However, I'm glad I am NOT getting the surgery from Dr. Shapiro after reading some of these reviews. Must be fate. Now my meniscus in my knee has torn since my ACL was never replaced, so my knee injury has gotten far worse due to Dr. Shapiro ignoring, avoiding, and not treating my torn ACL. AVOID DR. Michael R Shapiro clearly lacks confidence in his medical skills; self-doubt that reveals the kind of malpractice that passes for standard healthcare in this great country: most doctors placing finances far above helping people in pain. I came in with a broken wrist, assigned to Shapiro by my primary care physician. It seemed ideal: he was within walking distance, and since I can't bike or drive with my pained wrist, I was thrilled to be so near. When I got there, I was greeted by a friendly office manager, who asked me to fill out their forms. A silent wonder: Is she the same soul who sounded so mean the night before when she called to confirm the day's appointment and to list demands of what to bring? So glad she's different in person. The list of forms includes one that always raises a cringe: the arbitration clause. I have adopted the practice of ignoring it; but to make sure they understand why the signature line is blank, I write something like: "I trust, but prefer not to sign." All doctors had accepted my preference, only one manager calling back, but not forcing the matter. I set the clipboard with forms on the counter and returned to my seat. Soon I heard my name called. It was the friendly office manager. You need to sign this, she said, presenting the clipboard with the arbitration clause on top. I looked at it. I don't understand, I said. Other doctors don't make me sign. If you want to be seen, you have to sign. Okay, I said, flaring a bit, but I'll also write: "Signed under duress." Thus I scribbled, with my angry signature beneath. The friendly office manager said: I'll bring you a new form. If you want to be seen, you have to sign. I don't understand, I said. I have the right to refuse. And we have the right to refuse to see you, the friendly office manager said. If you don't sign, you have the right to go elsewhere. Swirling thoughts, too quick to capture: Such sublime confidence in the righteousness of her cause: and me with a two-day broken wrist, on a Friday around 10:30 a.m., half-sensing I won't be able to get it cast before Monday if I continue the Great Refusal. Knowing too that the mysterious pain in my thumb is increasing, and wondering how long I can bear it. Our eyes met, the friendly manager's and mine, her sublime confidence radiating, leaping into my brain where I imagined her telling colleagues and friends how she masters such moments: "And we have the right to refuse to see you. If you don't sign, you have the right to go elsewhere." After an intense second of eyeing each other: "I guess I'll go elsewhere," I said. As I retrieved my stuff from the waiting room chair, one man asked which doctor I'd been scheduled to see. Shapiro, I said. He's not that good, the man said, suggesting I was lucky to escape him. Maybe; but in June 2008 when I broke my left femur and was saved by indigent laws -- laws declaring that poverty shall not be cause for denial of treatment -- Shapiro was somehow the on-call surgeon. I seem to have come out okay, though Shapiro's luck wasn't so good: I couldn't pay his $4,000 bill. Whereon he unleashed the debt-collectors, a dismal if futile demand. That torment aside, I sometimes have pains when hauling my bike up the stairs to my second-floor apartment, or when sitting or sleeping in a wrong position, but I'm assuming few surgeons could have done better. Sometimes, however, when the rod seems to poke my hip area, I wonder if it's an inch or half-inch too long. (These notes sparked by office visit Friday morning, January 22, 2016, typed with one hand, one fingerstroke at a time, fixing many typos, taking over two-and-a-half hours, so Gentle Readers can be sure I wanted a chance to be heard. My wrist, with intensifying thumb-joint [arthritic?] pains, won't be cast before late-morning Wednesday, January 27. I went in for knee pain. The doctor didn't even inspect or touch my knee. After he told me to get an MRI and he didn't even look at the disk. Read the result paper and said we will just open it up and look to see what needs to be done and wanted to schedule surgery without alternative less invasive techniques to try before recommending surgery. read more

Dr. Shapiro did a Hamstring Avulsion surgery on me, as I tore all tendons off my pelvic bone that connect the hamstring to pelvis. He said this is a more rare surgery and explained everything to me. It's been almost 3 mos since the surgery & I'm feeling pretty good now that I'm past the normal post-op issues that anyone would have to deal with. I think her did a great job, my scar is already disappearing & walking is painless.....Physical Therapy isn't quite painless but all part of the process. Thank you doc!!! read more
