I'm stunned by an experience with The Collective Salon, my go-to vendor for hair care during the past 18 months. I learned yesterday what their true priority is, and it is most definitely not "legendary service", as their company writeup insists. (Forgive the length of this post, but I believe you may find it useful.) It's all about the money. Here's how I know. Yesterday, our beloved 32-year-old African Grey parrot was clearly in distress and our veterinarian advised us to rush him to the clinic. Only an hour away from my 1 p.m. appointment at The Collective, I immediately texted and voice-mailed my stylist, apologizing for the cancellation, offering to pay a cancellation fee, and advising her that I would rebook and would be tipping her an extra $100 for a Christmas bonus, over and above my normal tip for service. That pledge was clearly insufficient. When I called the salon directly to explain my situation, zero empathy was forthcoming. Instead, I was told that I would "only" be charged $140, half of the $280 charged for a color highlight. Apparently, they thought a $140 penalty was a generous concession over their normal full-price charge. To say that I was stunned was putting it mildly. But I should not have been. Here's what to expect the minute you sign up with this salon: 1. You must give them your full credit card detail "to hold" in case of cancellation. 2. You will be charged full price for any service cancelled within 24 hours of the visit.(or is it 48 hours?) I can understand a cancellation fee - my last salon charged $50. But FULL PRICE? And absolutely no exceptions? During my decades-long tenure as a communications consultant, I gave countless fee-free hours to clients when I felt the situation was warranted and would contribute to a healthy, balanced vendor-client relationship. It's called 'the cost of doing business,' folks. But The Collective Salon begs to differ. In fairness to my stylist, a talented woman whose company I enjoyed and work I appreciated, she did begrudgingly offer to forgo any penalty to keep my patronage. But her outrage was obvious, and I declined. Instead, I called the salon and told them to charge my credit card the full $280 - a last hurrah from me to a salon that puts money above all else. They did so immediately. Here are other random notes that may shed light on working with the Collective Salon: * They charge Oak Lawn prices without Oak Lawn amenities. You will be treated to rock-hard, molded plastic chairs - genuinely uncomfortable - whether undergoing a shampoo or sitting beneath the dryer. They will serve you a diet coke, but this is otherwise a bare-bones salon. * You will be hounded via text and phone to ensure you show up for your appointment. And clearly, family emergencies do not factor into the customer-client relationship. Cherished pet or beloved relative - a death in the family doesn't count. Pay up. In full. Immediately. Kaycee is absolutely amazing! She is fantastic at coloring and great at working with my really thick hair. She's also great with curly hair (which I don't have), but I have seen a lot of happy clients leave her chair when I come in and have seen lots of pictures. Kaycee is knowledgeable, does her best to be flexible if her calendar permits, and is just a lot of fun. If you don't want to chat, no problem. If you want to talk current events, she's well informed. If she can't fit you in, she will know exactly who to send you to within the salon and let them know how you like your hair done. The salon is comfortable and conveniently located to uptown and Park Cities. Easy to get to and plenty of parking. If you're looking for a new place, I highly recommend Collective! read more

This salon has saved me! Moving from the Midwest and having a regular salon that took me years and painful cuts/colors to find, the idea of finding a new salon in Texas was painful. Seeing Kaycee's instagram (@kayceeclarkhair) made me incredibly hopeful that I may have found my place! I had my first appointment in January and it was definitely more than worth the 1.5+ hour drive!!! The entire staff is very welcoming and friendly. Each staff member is incredibly passionate, and it shows in not only their work but how they treat clients and one another. Alissa rescued my Covid/quarantine neglected hair with a full highlight and toner. It looks amazing and it is HEALTHY!!! My previous salon was no longer convenient (it was close to childcare). I took a chance and called Collective Salon when I became desperate and things started to reopen. Reception was friendly and understanding, not judgmental, of my situation (6 months since any color and working around a childcare schedule). They have strict sanitizing and social distancing measures in place, and I felt comfortable. Even though it is basically in Highland Park, I didn't feel like I was paying HP prices and there was no elitist attitude. Alissa has years of experience and is well educated, so do not be wary because she looks so youthful (it is compliment). They do not push their products even though they do carry some great lines, which I appreciated. I am truly grateful for the welcoming and professional salon experience, and I look forward to my next visit. I left another salon and came here just to follow my hair stylist, Jordin. It's hard for me to find someone I like and trust to do my hair, especially now that I am blonde and need regular visits! She always seems to know the way to bring the best out of my hair and ways to change up my tone for the season. I've always wanted to have someone I could go to that could take the tiniest, most vague request and come up with something great! If I have any scheduling issues, she is very easy to work with to figure out something that will work for us both. I follow Pryor (my hair stylist) anywhere she goes. I trust her implicitly, and she's never led me astray! Collective is a great salon -- super accessible and central in the Oaklawn neighborhood, so it's easy to grab a bite to eat after, and parking is never an issue. My hair had been dyed way too dark by another stylist & Erica explained the color correction process to fix this & get me to the shade I wanted. She takes extra care to not damage your hair while achieving the results you want. I appreciated her depth of coloring knowledge & taking the time to understand what I wanted. I came in and showed her the picture. And she seemed like she wouldn't be able to do it. But I just hoped that she would be able to make my hair look good still. that was not the case. She barely did anything! I look the same except now I got face framing highlights and she toned my hair to make it more cool. I had major grow out & last time I got my hair done was 9 months ago. I always leave a little root But not that much! Initially She said she would raise up the color closer to the roots and she didn't. And when I asked she tried to twist it like I was not going for that. Then she said that she didn't do that because she wanted to get my hair to be more like the picture... like are we even looking at the same picture???!! Lol I never said I want a bunch of roots and that's not even how the picture looks. The contrast was pretty harsh, my "face framing highlights" were very harsh there was a little orange brassy tint happening where the high light started and it was not blended, it looked like a highlight that was grown out. I did not come in here to get my hair done as if I need to get my hair done again! That defeats the whole purpose of my visit. She's charging me 200 for the balayage and 85 for the trim and 20 for the toner. She was about to let me leave looking half ass. U can't really seriously be okay with your work!? I didn't say this but seriously tho, Can u proudly post this shit to promote ur work?? If not then u need to fix it. She went and talked to her manager and her manager said to fix it. But even then it still don't look right. She really didn't want to give me what I wanted. I showed her a picture and she was still confused about what my "goal" was and what I was looking to achieve. Imagine if I didn't have any reference.. it felt like a bait and switch. I didn't want to say too much at the beginning so she wouldn't be able to make her own interpretation about what I wanted and mess it up but it still happened clearly because she had her own agenda and made her mind up about what she was going to do. 2 stars only cuz she attempted to fix it.
