I have never received such POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE at a business. Not only did the ladies at front desk have poor attitudes they were disorganized and got the time of our appointments incorrect and then acted agressive and accusational that we did something wrong. Instead of having a manager solve the issue...Perhaps have us wait a few minutes and ask us if we would like a glass of water and have a seat while they squeeze us into their books...They were arguing with one of my sisters about how we got the appointment time wrong and how we were late. Note: we called and told them we were trying to find them and one of the front desk girls gave us very misleading directions. It seems to me that there are too many people doing the books there and they are not accurately communicating with one another. Poor management. Now this was probably the worst customer service experience I have EVER received to the point that WE WALKED OUT of the salon and didn't even want anything to do with the place... we were treated so rudely by salon snobs. This was (supposed to be) a special day with my sisters and I would have liked to enjoy as a bonding session a week before my wedding. They highly offended 3 people and have lost our business as a first time client. I HIGHLY recommend you do not go to this salon...you will be wasting your time and money. read more

This place always seems to get my hair right! The only place I trust in the north suburbs to cut my hair. I haven't had much experiance wiht hair color. I gave them 5 stars becuase of their hair cut and I was amazed by it. I don't go to a place for the front desk staff but their hair stylests and Syed was really good at cutting my hair. the stylest are great. I go to Syed, he is amazing at cutting hair. For hair color, cuts and styling, and makeup, this place is fabulous. They always remember me, and the service is impeccable. My favorites: their to-die-for hairwashers. These women know how to massage the scalp. They deserve tips on par with your stylist. I also love the coffee and tea selections. You can't really go wrong with any of the stylists either, although I love Sandy and Sad. They ARE pricey, but what do you expect? I can't afford to go here regularly anymore, but when I've saved up a bit of money it's the first place I visit. I've had my hair done in updos and in styles for two different weddings, as well as my makeup. They also offer waxing services but I have yet to partake. Went here a lot when I lived in the suburbs, after moving to Chicago and having my hair ruined it was definitely worth the trip back to get it done right. Got a haircut today from Tessa. It was amazing! She listened to what I described and pulled it off completely. The length is perfect, the layers were exactly what I wanted, and the products she used worked wonderfully. I've never had her before but she was very easy to talk to and will definitely be returning. Also got my hair colored by Jamie. She was able to fix it completely and cover the prior color. I love this place. Linda has been cutting my hair for 2 years, and it always looks good. The reason I can only give it 3 stars is because on my most recent trip there I asked to get 3.5 inches cut off. She took off way more than that, and my hair is now shorter than it's ever been even though we discussed it was still going to be long... At least it was still a pretty haircut, just annoying to now have to grow out my hair again when I had finally grown it out. read more

I was looking for a new salon and I think most people would agree, having your hair cut by someone new is nerve-wracking. I've had my hair cut by Saad for quite a while now and while the first few times I admit it was not exactly what I was hoping for, some of that issue was actually me - I really just didn't know how to explain exactly what I wanted. That's not his fault. We've ironed that out though and I'm very happy with the services I receive. I've also gone for a manicure now a few times and I highly recommend Gina. I don't get manicures too often - mostly out of medical need after orthopedic surgeries. On the most recent occasion , we were going to a black-tie affair. I explained to Gina that I have a medical condition which affects my nails and cuticles. I also have very little nails (not really short but really small fingers) which can be its own challenge. (In truth, I can be shy and a little hyper-sensitive about it because of a really horrible experience at a different salon where they were beyond nasty to me about both those issues.) I showed Gina the dress I was wearing, told her what kind of look I was hoping for and she was spot-on in her suggestions. She was also incredibly kind to me. So why four stars instead of five? Like others have noted, sometimes the front desk staff is a little lacking in customer service skills. Your front desk staff is the face of your business. They are the first and last people customers speak with and see - sometimes that means dealing with people who aren't so nice to them and it can be stressful - I know I've done it. However, if they cannot at least initiate or conclude a pleasant experience for customers, no amount of fantastic services in-between will encourage a good customer to come back. Also, as a small aside, if I had a wish-list for this place, I would love for them to get an online booking system. read more

The process of trying to find a reasonably priced place to get my hair cut in the northern burbs has been more difficult than I had originally thought it would be. Went there yesterday to get my out of control hair back in control. It had grown beyond what I like it to be at, but I'd LOVED the cut I'd had previously, but since I'd gotten it cut at a school, and the student who'd cut it was moving to tennessee, and I don't want to drive to tennessee to get my hair cut, and want something somewhat inexpensive and close by, I decided to try Michael Thomas. The color went fine, but it took a very long time and because my hair is so thick cost much more (I think they charge you by the tube of color) than my hair normally does to color. I was sitting in the colorist's chair for at least two hours. It usually takes an hour. I'm not sure what she was doing or what was going on, but it's not good. Then, when it was time to wash my hair, the shampoo woman tried to massage my skull off my neck and it really hurt. She also shampooed my hair five (ish) times, and applied a glaze to my hair, even though I didn't ask for one...I'm really not sure what that was for... After that, I went to the person who actually did the haircut, and she told me that my hair, that I loved, looked stupid (basically) and she wouldn't cut it that way for me. Instead, she gave me bangs that went into my eyes and were poking them, when I wanted to not have to worry about pushing my hair out of my face anymore. I went home and trimmed my bangs myself so that it would stop irritating me, and now I look like Darth Vader. I'm going to another place for an emergency haircut tomorrow. read more

I went to Michael Thomas several years ago, when I was just a middle schooler, hoping that I could get a cute hair color for my very first time dyeing my hair. Little did I know that they would take advantage of my ignorance towards the process and rob me of a fun experience with my mom. The older woman that I went to made a snide, disgusting comment towards my request for blue hair, telling me it would look ugly on me; after that nightmare, she proceeds to fry my virgin hair beyond belief after leaving the bleach untouched for fifty minutes under high heat. We, or at least I, decided on a dusty pink instead of a blue in an attempt to save it. She then turns my horrifically damaged hair into a neon pink mess. I was 12 when that happened, and I'm 17 now, but I refuse to ever go back. Do not give this business your money. I don't usually write reviews. I received a G.C. from my husband- very nice and he thought that the salon closest to our house would be a nice gift. This place is so over-rated. I had a manicure and it was one of the worst ones I have had. My appt. was yesterday and it is already chipping. They rush you in and rush you out. The manicurist was pleasant- but not good at getting cuticles off or applying a nice even top coat. Too delicate for my liking. I agree with some of reviews for the receptionist staff, too. Not top game. I will stick the dozen of other nail salons around BG that charge half as much and do a much better job. It's difficult finding that perfect hair stylist that you know you'll be satisfied with your cut before he/she even starts. I very much disliked Mario Tricocci. Instead, I was a big fan of On Stage in Glenview, until my hair dresser moved to Wisconsin and I began going to Michael Thomas. Surprisingly, I had hair appointments with different stylists, and I loved all of them: Isela, Sad, JJ, Larry and Patty. So, I usually don't have a preference who I get when I call for an appointment, as long as it's one of the five... For hair color, Cassie is the best!! I have been going there for 3 years even though the front desk continued to make mistakes with my appointments...finally I have decided I have to move on. I love my stylist, dislike the front desk, dislike waiting forever to get washed and tired of waiting to figure out their process. My days off are important and when I manage to get away to get my hair done I want things to go smoothly. But here you schedule your appointment and when you walk in you are handed a black cape and then told to go back. Go back to the person doing your hair? Go back to get washed??? What am I doing???? Oh and if your stylist changes stations or isn't there yet Good luck - the front desk has no clue on how to guide you. When you sit to wait to get washed be ready to wait forever because everyone else is in a bigger hurry than you. But do you wait? Do you push your way through? Does your stylist come back? Do they know you are there??? You could die waiting there. You get done...finally. Then you get to see your stylist and you discover the appointment you made for a hair cut and perm won't happen because your stylist doesn't do perms! I've given them multiple chances to get their scheduling right and every time they screw it up and the walking in process is so dysfunctional. Sadly I'm done. If you can deal with the the layers to get to your stylist you are good. But with my busy schedule I need things right the first time and I like to feel good when I leave. The place is clean, has great peaceful ambiance for a spa. i often noticed that merchants are less hospitable when i told them that i come with a coupon. Hair Stylist: I have had Linda as my hairstylist for the past 3 times and she is consistently reliable and does a great job with my hair. She's friendly as well. I would recommend her. The shampoo lady - Irene- is wonderful. The facial - would not go back to this salon for a facial- the lady who I would not name her here in a public review- was very nice, friendly and knowledgeable, however, the last time I had a facial, was the roughest facial I have ever had in my life. Alot of scrubbing and just really really harsh. I've been to many facials and this is the only one I have broken out after, terribly. You would think she's cleaning a dirty foot and not your sensitve face. Perhaps if you have thicker skin, and don't care about them being gentle, it would be ok to go.. they use good products, specifically some skin ceutical products for Vitamin C which is effective. Front staff- poor customer service. The last time I went, I had asked if I could charge tip to credit card. The front staff I checked out with was friendly and offered to give change to my $20 dollar bill since they only take cash tip. However, an older brunette who was the one that gave change says to the staff "More?" These customers are so unprepared. You would think they'll come prepared with change before coming" The man next to her "They're never prepared" The older lady went on about how yesterday evening, everybody was asking for change, etc.. They are saying all this while I - the client --was right there checking out. I find that very rude that they intentionally want me to hear this (or not- but I don't care). It's very inappropriate and horrible customer service. This is what they should expect if they don't allow clients to charge tip to the credit card. With the price I'm paying for the haircut, I expect great customer service. Definitely not a high end salon with this attitude. read more

My experience at Michael Thomas was a disaster, I do not recommend this salon AT ALL. I visited this salon to have my hair cut and colored. I informed the colorist and owner of my history with hair loss and that for "years" I have been avoiding harsh chemicals in order to maintain my hair health. They seemed very professional and concerned and proceeded to color my hair. My hair turned out WAY too dark and I walked out with the SAME hair cut as I walked in with. Odd for someone that has spent 20 years cutting hair. I was not asking for a miracle, it was a simple cut. Upon my disappointment, I spoke with the owner and he reassured me to return to have my hair color corrected and re-cut (which he should not have considering my history, but he insisted it was safe). The colorist ignored the need to use gentle products and my scalp burned (this is no exaggeration) for 2.5 WEEKS! Day two I had to head home from work to wash my hair because my scalp was burning so much. Unfortunately I did not know that it is STATE LAW to patch test the hair before coloring, this law was ignored. The testing is something I would've benefited from to determine if I would have an allergic reaction since I am unsure of what causes my scalp sensitivity. When I called to inform them my scalp was burning, my calls were not returned by the owner. Instead he was having his staff call and I was never offered any solace or a refund. When I called to inquire what was used on my hair as to avoid these chemicals in the future, I was told my file was deleted. I had to visit a dermatologist, take oral and topical prescriptions, and I lost 50% of my hair after spending 2 years growing it out to a healthy state. My hair loss lasted for 4 months! I should have sued. read more

It looked natural, didnt rub off or stain my clothes even right after the service and it lasted for over a week. I went to Michael Thomas several years ago and was treated so rudely by Warren, who is an owner there, that I would never go back. He was insulting and snide during the time he was cutting my hair. Maybe he thought he was being funny but I can tell you that negative jokes at the customer's expense are not funny. That's no way to run a business. A few years ago I saw a woman who works there and mentioned to her that Warren had made me feel uncomfortable. She became angry at me and staunchly defended Warren, without any interest in my complaints. These people need a refresher course in customer service! read more

i was pretty happy with the hair-stylist - Rita - she tries to style the hair in a trendy way - went there twice for a blow-dry and was satisfied. however, they also have a make-up artist - Cheryl - who is horrible!!! this lady does not know anything about putting on make-up! I went there for an application and was soo disappointed. The foundation shade was 5 times lighter than my skin color and made me look like clown. I had informed her my outfit (for which was getting the make-up) was ivory, yet she applied black eye-shadow. I wasn't satisfied at all with her or her make-up - and removed the whole thing. Used my own foundation and no other make-up. And she still had the nerve to ask me for $50. i didn't feel it was fair to pay the price for no make-up.. yet she walked to my car until I handed her money. Want a greedy selfish bitch! There is NO WAY i'm ever going to that place - and especially Cheryl - ever again!! Beware! read more

I was reading through a lot of these reviews given to this salon in buffalo grove and believe me I have been going there for years...as well as my entire family and family friends....number one the front desk is consistent and VERY friendly...so any problems that have been mentioned about them are severly incorrect. Every time I have been to the salon the desk has greeted me very friendly and accomodated me as far as appointment and service. I walk in and if I dont know the technician they promptly walk me back. Ive booked A LOT of appointments there and have NEVER had any mistakes. As far as the stylist as colorist...they are probably some of the best ive seen...i go to school in new york and have seen master stylists and the staff at MT come very close if not the same in comparison. I would not recommend this salon to anyone - the service and staff were terrible. I was recently in on Friday, October 8th with a group of girls getting ready for my sister's wedding. I had a gentleman do my up-do and it turned out terrible - he obviously is used to doing teen hair for homecoming/prom, because I looked like I had flashed back to being 14 years old instead of 28. A woman had tried to fix it once I had complained; it looked slightly better, but still not something I was happy with. Went back later and they told me there was nothing I could do about it - it would likely look worse if they had started over and offered me no solution. I went home and took everything out and started from scratch - it took me 30 minutes to do myself and looked 100x better than what they had attempted to do. They gave me a small discount, but despite the fact that it looked awful they shouldn't have charged ANYTHING! Not only was this a terrible experience for the day of a wedding, it happened to my sister when I got married - NEVER GO HERE FOR A SPECIAL OCCASION! You'd be better off doing your own hair and save yourself the money!!! read more
