I didn't want to go somewhere I'd be looked at suspect or like a unicorn, so I searched for a Black-owned yarn shop. To my surprise, Gathering Yarns was just 25 minutes from DC and worth the drive. The yarn shop is a standard storefront in a strip mall, so it was both easy and difficult to find at the same time. You can't miss the mall itself, but you'll have to scan to notice the store. The interior is cute with a modest selection of yarn, needles, and other accessories. The skein I bought was reasonably priced, but since I'm a new knitter, relative value is still unclear. I took the beginner knitting class and the instructors were great. They give you one-on-one attention and focus on your learning style and your strengths. I learned the basics and will definitely be going back for more lessons. All-in-all I really dig this place and will definitely be back.

So, the owner needs to learn about customer service, then hire the right folks and train them properly. There is room out on the porch & inside at a big maker space table for people to work on projects. There is a classroom area in the rear & I understand a class schedule is coming. My Fiber Arts group went together on a "field trip" to explore. They have all kinds of fabrics, kits, & curated bundles of fat quarters for quilting. Everything is so well thought out, presented, and displayed. I know a bunch of my friends who are going to want to move in & "live" there. It is around in the rear of a shopping center, so as you turn in from Benfield Rd, go all the way back past the string if restaurants and stores and around the rear corner. On this most recent trip to the MD Burbs for a Yelp event, I was delighted to find Three Little Birds just a few miles from my hotel. So I stopped in during my lunch break on a mission to find just the right fabric for a wedding quilt I'm sewing for a dear family member. This shop is really, really cute! They carry mostly modern fabrics, plus a ton of knitting/crocheting supplies. In the back is a classroom area, and they have lots of project samples, notions, and one of the best selection of sewing books I've seen. The best news is: I found the perfect fabric for the wedding quilt! And I had just enough space in my suitcase to get it home and start cutting. Highly recommend this little shop if you're in the area and on a hunt for some new fabric!

Local artisans gather together to offer various handcrafted goods, and there's something for everyone! There are: basketry, candles, ceramics, gourd art, hand-spun yarns, jewelry, knitting, lampwork beads, ornaments, painting, pencil drawings, photography, pottery, sculptures, shell art, stained glass, tapestry bags, weaving, wood arts, and even handmade soap! Some of my favorites were: Jeanne Hammett's beautiful silkscreen prints, Lisa Tettimer's mixed metal jewelry, and Marta Kelsey's gourds. This year, the show was set up at Calvert High School, where all the vendors had their own 'booth' area set-up, and there was plenty of room to roam around, peruse to your heart's content, and speak with the various artists.
