This review is mostly for the consistent amazing customer service from Ms. Ebonie. She is always at the checkout area. Helping people in the self checkout. Or checking people out herself. She is always helpful to all the customers. She has helped me twice now and i always remember how nice she is. She always know what to do if you are having trouble with your coupon or vouchers. Always ready to help. Now for the store i want to comment regarding the fabric selection. They have some but not a lot but it was hard to find the right fabric to the price i wish they would add more affordable options for it. I am beginner in sewing and i am looking for good fabrics at a good price i saw some price points i like but they have no stock or there was nothing there. Hopefully when i comeback they will have better selection. Also i wish they have price checker, this was such a great feature before or maybe only the Michaels in Rockville had it in the past. It's nice to find treasures from their clearance section but there is no price checker and i have to ask someone on the the floor for the prices. It can be tiring for the employees to be checking all the stuff you want to ask so I don't get any since the clearance prices aren't always accurate or sometimes it has no price. read more

This Michael's could have been considered a bastion in its time, but it is just a shadow of its former self. Once a haven for artists and hobbyists alike, it's now a frustrating mess. The aisles are in disarray, the stock is inconsistent, and good luck finding an employee when you need help. I have purchased product here regularly only to find it damaged or half-stolen. The prices are simply not competitive, even the Michael's store brand leaves a lot to be desired, and I just can't find myself wanting to bother returning to this store unless I REALLY need something and Hobby Lobby isn't open. You will find yourself price-checking and feeling quite frustrated at the mark-ups here. Even with a price-check system here, like I mentioned, it just doesn't feel competitive... and I'm not sure if it is offered anymore. Marginally improved only through the self checkout machines that have been installed recently at this location, though you will probably still experience a ridiculous wait time. It seems as though theft is an increasing issue here as more and more seemingly inconspicuous merchandise gets put behind locks, sensors and cases. This makes shopping already inconvenient when you cannot find an employee on the floor. Seriously? 9 dollar store brand scissors behind locks? It's especially comical when you see these locked items right next to items RIPPED off of the pegs, whether due to a frustrated customer not being able to access the item or for more nefarious reasons... Freight seems haphazard, with boxes, carts, and U-boats left scattered around the store. Employees start stocking, but then disappear to who knows where, leaving the mess behind. Considering the work ethic here, I'd be seriously concerned about trusting them to frame anything precious. Custom framing requires care and attention to detail, but with how disorganized this store is, I wouldn't feel confident leaving anything valuable in their hands. If basic stocking tasks are abandoned mid-shift and the store itself is in disarray, what does that say about the items entrusted in their care? There seems to be an issue with turnover here--whether it's due to company practices or specific problems with this store is unclear. However, the result is a noticeable lack of consistency in service and experience. Oh, how the mighty have fallen... This store used to be a go-to for creative supplies, but now it's more of an obstacle course of inconvenience. read more

With Christmas coming up I had to start my shopping. With two nieces wanting drawing items I figured this would be good enough place to start than anywhere else. Both of the nieces are big into drawing and had items on their list that ranged from Sharpies to calligraphy pens. I figured I would give this place a shot first to see what I might be able to grab at a decent price. One thing to note, the Sharpies and pens are basically in two different sections of the store. Took me a frustrating minute to figure that out and have to backtrack to the other section. What I thought was going to be the start of my shopping turned out to be a pricing trip. Everything I looked at appeared to be marked up compared to other stores and online. They did have the items, but I wasn't willing to pay almost double the asking price at other places. read more

I have a warm story I will tell for a long time to come. I went to Michaels to find a few Poster frames for both poster sized memorial fotos and to create a picture collage. I am so pleased with my visit to the frame shop in the Michael's store in Laurel. Joseph went above and beyond to repair a custom frame and replace the broken glass after it had fallen. I just come for an estimate and thought they might ask me to return once I removed the broken glass. But Joseph (the frame shop manager) thought nothing of it and took care of it right away. I'm obsessed with this store! There's always something I could buy. I visited today looking specifically for a 6 x 8 picture frame, but I've not had any luck finding that size, here or elsewhere. There were a lot of unique and cool stuff that I could see in my house but I resisted and will return when I need to scratch that shopping itch. I have always had a good time here finding my art supplies and such. This review is specifically for Aaron's Frame shop. Took in some well earned Navy memorabilia to have it framed. The size of the paper was weird, the frames didn't fit right, and I couldn't find a border (don't know the terminology) thing that worked with it. Then enters Sam. A man who knows his way around the sharp side of a frame. This man is so awesome at his job, that if you needed to ruin someone's life, he'd be able to do it for you. He would frame them up for a crime and poof, the cops would be like, "well dang, he's clearly framed but Sam did it and... well it was too good to not put the wrong person in jail." In all seriousness, they did a great job with a good turn around time. I felt total confidence in the shop that they were not going to damage my important paper work I wanted in frames. They look beautiful and we just hung them in the wall. They are so totally awesome. Really brings the room together. I would bring all my framing needs here again. I would not take them any place else. read more

I don't really think of it as a craft store, but a place to get bits and pieces for other projects. For instance, I bought a wood plaque to use as a base for a mobile radio, and felt squares to use for costume props. But you will find just about every craft item you could think of, a framing department, and helpful employees. read more

After going to the Bowie store numerous times, and the only thing they specialize in is, long lines, two cashierd, and poor customer service, and they never get it right. Going into this Michaels great customer service, the cleanliness of the store and the friendly employees really makes it worth traveling 40 minutes out of the way. read more

Wanted to use my coupon for custom framing, but how the store is set up just doesn't really allow the employee to help more than one person at a time. Unfortunately, I have to compare the framing department to the new Michaels in Friendship Heights. The FH location has there frames and mats on walls so customers can look and try them out while the employees are helping other customers. You know framing can take forever just to figure out what you want and if you have to wait for a Michaels employee to pull every frame off the wall for you, that just doesn't work. Especially if there's a few people in front of you doing the same thing. We eventually walked out without purchasing anything because the wait was just too long. Michael's is great for crafting supplies and great discounts. This store seems to have a good selection of 365 Happy planners and accessories. The planner products are not all located in the same section, but staff was easily able to point us to all areas. Really great discounts--always a good experience when you leave spending less than anticipated. Staff is also friendly--we had a good laugh. read more

3 Strikes and you're out! Let me premise this review by saying that this review is focused entirely on the framing department and general management. I recently took a large print of a wedding photo in to be custom framed here. We picked the matting and frame with no issues, and were told we would be contacted within 1-2 weeks to pick up our finished product. After 3 weeks and no calls, I phoned the store for a status update. At which time I was told that my picture had never been sent out for framing. (Strike #1) I was of course a little upset and was promised over the phone that it would go out immediately and I could expect a discount upon pick-up. Oh well. After a couple more weeks and no phone calls, I decided to visit the store myself. Turns out my frame had been there for about a week, but they had forgotten to call me. "Oops I'm sorry." was all i got from the framing manager. (Strike #2) The framing manager helped me unwrap it to examine the work. I was shocked to see a couple inch long scrapes down the one side of the frame. She suggested I use a marker to color in the scratch marks and you might not be able to tell that it was scratched. I couldn't believe she was actually expecting me to go along with this ridiculous idea! - I refused to pay for it and ask to see the manager of the store. Conveniently he wasn't in. So we wrapped it back up and she sent it back out to be re-framed. This time I was really upset and after getting home I promptly emailed their customer support and made them aware of my troubles at this store. To my surprise I was contacted by the local District Manager and was assured that she would contact the in-store manager to make it right with a considerable discount. I thought to myself, awesome I can live with that. About a week later I get the call to pick up the final product. The framing manager told me that she had heard about my complaint from the district manager and was VERY apologetic, and blamed all the problems on a certain employee who had recently been let go. I wasn't really in the mood to hear excuses, and politely ask to speak to the store manager about my discount. She ran off to fetch him while I waited. After about 10 minutes she returned and told me I would get 15% off my total. I was really expecting them to do a little better than that. I said; "Only 15% for all that heart-ache? Where's the manager?" "He's in his office" she said. "And he doesn't want to speak to me?" I asked. "He just told me to give you 15% off" she replied. (Strike #3) So basically they messed around with a simple photo framing job for about 2-1/2 months and all I got was a brush off from the store manager and a 15% discount. I can assure you I will NEVER return to any Michaels Framing dept. again! ~The Guru read more

UPDATE: The management has changed quite obviously in recent years and I'm so relieved to be able to shop here again given the convenience. I can actually also use my teacher discount without being treated with suspicion even though I do keep proof on hand just in case. I'm fine with employees checking but it's the way they address you and ask that makes the difference. The old manager actually denied my measly discount even though I showed her proof and had spent a whole lot of money in that store for all the classes I've taught over the years. Usually the store coupons are better than my discount so IDK why she chose to give me such a hard time. Anyhow, everyone now seems to be nice and customer-service oriented. This Michaels is basically the same as the rest of them; big, bright store, full of just about anything your crafting heart could desire. I'm pretty sure I'd never been inside a Michaels until my now wife came into my life. While I'm much more likely to go to Best Buy to "look around" than Michaels, this Michaels has proven useful on many occasions, especially when we needed frames to help decorate our new apartment. They have a custom framing section that compares to every place else, but the thing that sets them apart is their staff. They were great when we needed a matte custom cut for a frame we bought from the store (they can do custom-made frames, but that gets really expensive). The finished product looks great. Later we ordered another custom matte and mounting project. This is where the staff really shined. Due to circumstances totally beyond her control our order took way more time to be completed than it should have. Leisa, the framing manager made everything right, even going so far as to give me her personal cell phone number and taking mine so she could update us on the progress. We were very frustrated that it was taking so long, but after I went in and spoke with Leisa, got the whole story, and exchanged phone numbers, it made us feel much better to know the whole story and have open communication about the issue. Even though this project was so delayed, we will definately go back for our next framing project because we know Leisa understands customer service and customer experience and will take care of us. Leisa gets 5 starts; I give the whole store 4 because if their corporate people hadn't screwed everything up and then not taken care to fix it, Leisa wouldn't have had to bend over backwards to make everything right. The best thing Michaels could do is promote Leisa and give her the authority to all of their framing experiences right the first time, and to promote a culture and understanding where customers remain loyal even when mistakes are made because there is honest communication and the customer experience is treated properly. read more

I actually went back to see if I had reviewed this before. I am surprised I had not. I was so mad at this store that I even wrote a note to corporate. There was an employee who made me so mad. But not anymore! This place has a wonderful vibe. We go there way too often and we love it. The ladies who work there are so nice to us! We love it! Sunflowers all over the place and at a discount is what we came for but we left with so much more. I will happily go there forevermore. read more

Honest to the Yelp heavens this location has the worst service all around. Between the staff not knowing about their products, to staff not offering their assistance just boggles my mind. They took the cake on my last visit (had to return something) the line was was ridiculously long. There was only one cashier and two other staff members on the side talking to eachother. At some point people began to leave their stuff and just walk out. CRAZY!! That was my last visit. Will just drive to Columbia from now on. read more

This is a review of the custom framing shop. I recently brought in 3 prints to get them custom framed, and found the staff there to be extremely helpful. She worked with my budget, didn't try to upsell me (I'm fortunate in that my dad is a photographer, so I knew that framing and matting an 8/10 photo would cost over $100), and helped me put together exactly what i wanted - and then my order was ready in exactly 2 weeks as promised! And, it looked great. My photos were well taken care of, and neatly wrapped in brown paper, with piano wire for hanging on the back of each frame. And, they will correct any problems you have with your frames in the future at any Michael's location. Highly recommend as an affordable, quality framing option, and look for sales! I lucked out with a 60% off frames sale while I was there. read more

Well I have been in the store before and they've offered me service a few times so that good. But today was a different thing I called to ask about their store stocks and it took them 10 mins to answer the phone they didn't even answer the phone so I hung up. Michaels was about to get my service but after this I don't ever want to go to this one ever again. I went to Michael's this past Sunday and was extremely disappointed when I asked for assistance from two different associate's and instead of helped I was directed by a "maybe we have it maybe we don't" I was able to find what I was looking for because I looked it up and figured out what isle it would be by myself. I had to use the picture on my phone to help me find what I was looking for. The store itself is great because crafts are awesome it's just the people who are working there. I have lived all across the US in the past ten years and this is the worst Michael's for customer service. Driving the extra six miles to shop at the Michael's in Rockville is worth it to me to avoid the mismanagement found at this Michael's in Laurel. ( I have spent thousands of dollars over the years at fabric and craft stores. Some women buy jewelry, I buy craft supplies). At this Michaels' there is a line of ten customers and one guy is the only employee checking out a customer with some kind of problem with her return. Finally after about ten minutes with this same problem customer, another customer in the growing line got vocal and asked that the manager be called to handle things. The guy told us he WAS the manager and "no one else working that day had cash register skills". About ten minutes later another employee showed up to check, so the line could finally start moving. Waiting in line for over a half hour is not acceptable when the manager uses all his employees to stock shelves even when the store gets busy. This tells me that this particular store does not value customers as much as they do having the shelves fully stocked for future customers (who they will never have if they don't take care of the ones they DO have). I must add that there IS one female employee who works there who DOES do a good job when she is there. SHE should be promoted to manager. read more
