I am somewhat crafty so I make it to Michael's on a regular basis. I always check their ad for coupons (usually one for 40-50% off one item) before coming in. They have supplies for a variety of crafts (baking, scrapbooking, model building, knitting...) but their variety within each craft isn't as extensive as larger Michael's stores. I like to dabble in a variety of crafts so I enjoy walking the aisles and can usually find some good deals. read more

What's going on with the line situation here? I come here a lot and everytime the line is like 10 people deep and it moves all the time. Straight down the back, all the way down the side. Then someone either accidentally cuts or decides one line is ridic for all the registers or people start being line vigilantes and creating their own, pissing off the people who have been waiting the entire time. I went there to get some material to finish my grandmothers Christmas present. When I was ready to check out I accidentally skipped the line and walked up. It was an honest mistake, the line starts in the middle of the store and I didn't even see it because I was coming out of a side isle. Super rude employees. Have come here multiple times and have had to deal with their constant attitude. Tried coming in on Sunday, didn't check to see if they closed. I walked in since the doors were open, WHILE an employee was standing outside but didn't let me know anything but let OTHWR customers know. Employee once I walked in: "Uh. We closed 7 minutes ago." Okay. My apologizes I just need to grab an ink stamp, people were still checking out. Could i grab that really fast? "No. We're closed." Okay. Understand. *Sits in car* As i'm sitting in the car, I see 2 ladies walk up, Employee lets them know they are closed, the ladies ask just as nicely as me if they could grab one thing and they allow them to. GREAT selection of everything you need for crafts/holidays/weddings/you name it. The outside of this store and the parking lot are both janky, but the inside is a magical wonderland. The framing center is huge and the staff are all very helpful. Here's a useful tip: holiday decorations and all that jazz are discounted BEFORE the holiday even happens. I bought a ton of Christmas stuff yesterday for 75% off. Christmas is in a month. It's fine. Make sure to get the daily coupons off of the website before you go in. This location was my go to when I lived in San Diego. It's a nice size with an unlimited supply of arts, crafts, frames, decor, etc. I was always helped right away and the employees always knew how to help with what I was looking for. I came here a lot when I was pregnant to get stuff to paint and make for my daughters nursery. I also came here to get frames and crafts for home decor, or baking goods for get togethers and parties. The parking lot is very small so be sure to check for their peak hours before making the drive, especially if you have a bigger car. The store itself though, is perfect for arts n crafters, or if your kids need some supplies for a school project. It's the perfect place! read more

Historically, all Michael's are understaffed but this one takes the cake. We made a quick stop in for one basic item. Not only could we not find it but we couldn't find anyone to help us. First off, I didn't like the parking lot. Its tiny and cramped, and two chicks almost hit me. One was while she was trying to park and almost hit my car, the second girl was trying to re-position her car and almost backed up into me as I was walking out towards my car. I came here looking for some Martha Stewart embossing goods, and they were lacking in supplies compared to the Mission Valley location. Only one heat gun was in sight, no packs of embossing powder, just a few packages of a starter embossing set, with most of the packages ripped open. Im anal and I like the stuff I buy to come in nice and undamaged packages. Also, while roaming up and down the aisle looking for the Martha section, no one would help me. The store was not busy either. The line was way better than the one at Mission Valley though. There was maybe one woman in front of me, and two cashiers working at the time, both busy with a customer. Normally at the Mission Valley one, there's only one cashier working and theres 10+ people in line. I dont think I will be coming back here anytime soon. Yay for the short line, but I dont like scary parking lots where my already crappy car might get messed up even more. I didnt like how they were short on what I needed. Short & sweet: 1. I love Michaels as a company - great sales and great products. Only place I go. 2. The Michaels on Midway Dr. in the Point Loma/Sports Arena area is the best Michaels. They always have everything stocked, have the best products, is a clean story, and the staff is always fantastic. 3. The manager, Tom, at the Michaels store on Midway Dr. in the Point Loma/Sports Arena area is fantastic and deserves a raise. I came with a complicated/confusing billing error from a purchase I made, and not only did he call corporate for me, but he was super helpful, nice, and took down my name and number to call me back when he figured everything out. I am always picky about customer service, and I have to say that Tom, and all his efforts, were amazing - and the reason why I will always come to that Michaels location. Thank you Tom! read more

They almost always have what I need, but the customer service could use a little help. Everyone is super friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful, they just appear to be understaffed most times I'm there. The check out lines are always long and sometimes it's hard to find someone to help you. Help your staff out and give them one or two more people to share the work load. This review is for the framing department. In short, stay away. I was interested in getting a custom matting job, nothing fancy, just holes for two documents for a 11"x14" standard frame. Drop it off and they tell me it will be done in a week. Well, I call after 10 days and they say that they haven't started on it, call back in a week. I call back in a week, and they say it is done, and I go to pick it up, and it turns out they haven't started on it. Tell me they are horribly sorry, they will work on it right away, and it will be done tomorrow. Show up the next day, and guess what? Yup, they haven't started on it; this time they say that they person that does this isn't in today, he will be here tomorrow and it will get done first thing in the morning. Swing by after work, and guess what? Yup, still not done. At this point, I try to have them give me the materials and I will just take it to another place, but the guy is like "I will do it right now and it will take 10 minutes." Well, and hour and a half later, he gives me a product that I could have done at home with dull scissors. He mumbles that it's not his fault, because the dimensions were messed up, but the thing is it was his fault, because he was the person to take the dimensions (three weeks prior!). So, unless you like hand-holding people to get them to do their job, you probably want to go someplace else. Anywhere else. read more

Yeah, be careful of the parking situation, and pulling out when you leave. And yeah things are a little messier than some Michael's, but it's convenient and it has all the same stuff, and some of those things I just need when I need them and get the urge to create something. There is also an Aaron Brothers right there close by too if you need a choice or can't find what you're after, but Michael's usually does it for me. read more

I wanted to let everyone know who does paper crafting and scrapbooking about Cathy Gillick, a teacher at the Midway Michael's store. Cathy was so encouraging to me about teaching this fine art. I met her 2 years ago, and I have attended practically every class she offers since then. Creative doesn't begin to describe her. She is awesome. Takes time with every student in her classes to help them learn new techniques in card making and mixed media as well as scrapbooking. She is patient, cheery, and truly a nice person. She has made my experience at Michael's so much better and I got the bug for papercrafting from her. I would say, if you have any interest in papercrafting, making cards or scrapbooking, go in to the Michael's on Midway and ask for her. Her help and advice is invaluable... read more

As if I had nothing better to during the holidays! I've been to 3 different Michael's location today to purchase Fiji Polaroid Films. My first stop was Chula Vista, they sold out and sent me to Pt. Loma. The Point Loma location also sold out! They called Mission Valley to check their inventory...supposedly they had some and reserved me 3 boxes at the register. I got here at 9 pm, went straight to cash register, the young lady said oh-we have them let me go get it. A few minutes later the story changed, the young man at the other register said "we sold out, and tried telling the lady who called from the other locations but they hung up and we didn't know where she was calling from!" His exact words! I was livid!! The store manager was helpless! At least offer a coupon or something to compensate the valuable time I've lost! To everyone reading this, be sure to call ahead to check on the inventory yourself! Don't rely on the associates to do it for you! They can't be trusted and have zero patience! Since living in SD for the past 6 months I've been urging to go to a Michaels craft store to get my baking items to start baking for my upcoming cake business and this Michaels craft store was just around the corner of where I live so I was very excited to see a michaels near me. Now before I bash this store I used to live in Ventura county where their Michaels craft store had a lot of stocked items everything was super organized and clean and the staff always had a smile on their face. Now I feel I was spoiled from that store but when I came into this michaels store I walked in and I said to myself " what the heck is this? Looks like crap!" Now I knew I would have to give it a chance and so I did until I reached the cashiers....I understand people have their bad days but why on earth would you be working if your going to check out customers without a greeting? I mean come on! At least a Hello would be nice or a damn smile but no of course not.....anyway would I return to this store? Yeah I would since its close to me but i would only step in for some sprinkles and that's it! Ill go the extra miles to Clairemont and have a better experience there and more variety of sprinkles and other baking needs I may need. read more

First. Pleases note that I have been a loyal customer for years. The store in Point Loma, San Diego is located next to a strip club. The corporate offices are changing their idea of customer care....they are going to cater to families...next to the strip club. The corporate office has decided to cancel paper crafting services. After about six years of fantastic card making classes, they are no more. Understand that for every class given, there are six to ten students who buy supplies for the classes. Corporate is shooting their store in its foot/feet. The area director, instructor, store manager, customer care person and many students have written and called to ask corporate to rethink this decision. Most of us have not received any feedback....other than a respons to emails thanking us for our imput. Most students are senior citizens and these classes are a really impirtant part of our learning and mental health. I and we are just sick. Why sell paper, stickers, ribbons, stamps, ink pads, paper punches, dies and cutting machines if you do not have classes to support the sales? read more

Signing up just to post about this Michael's. They annoyed me enough that I won't go to them again. They will also be losing over $400 in framing business from me, but not due to their framing department. I am just going to go to a competitor even if I have to pay a little more. I went in on a Tuesday to find crafts to test putting pictures on canvas and for a framing quote. I found some canvas for 50% off, according to the signs. (It was directly underneath the canvas I was purchasing, same brand, for canvas etc..) . I then had to hunt all over for white tissue paper, had trouble finding it, could not locate a single person to help. The only person that had been around had been the framing guy who gave me a quote earlier. So I give up and go to the register. The canvas rings up at $14.99 which is what the price tag said before 50% off. I said there was a 50% sign and he says okay, and drops it half off. I ask about tissue paper he says stop by tomorrow they will get a shipment in. He even promised when I expressed skepticism. Next day I stop by no tissue paper. Annoyed, I go somewhere else. My test canvas project works out that night. So, because the canvas was on sale I go back to get some more on Wedn. I get to the register and it doesn't ring up 50% off again. So I say there is a sign, that I got it a few days ago at that price, and that its the same brand as listed on the signs. They say its only for stretched canvas. I had stretched canvas. Then they say its not for multi-packs, and it needs to be in yellow or red packaging. The thing is from what I remember all of the packaging in the canvas aisle was light blue and there were signs all over. The sign was also directly under the price tag of the one I was purchasing, but they said the signage didn't agree because it was the wrong color packaging, and wouldn't drop the price. So I didn't buy it, didn't make a scene, and left. I won't be going back. Worst customer service I have encountered in a long time. This is my favorite Michaels store in the area for a number of reasons-it's small and packed with stuff but easier to get assistance and more importantly easier --and quicker--to get through check out. Sure it's cramped and overflowing but well staffed and I always find what I need. read more

OK, they have great prices. But when I have to stand in line for 25 minutes, with 15 other people, with only two registers open, it's simply not worth it. It's not the employees' fault. I came here to get two pieces of art work framed for my husband's birthday. Tim, was the framing specialist that helped me. He was so patient with my indecisiveness and gave me so much valuable input for making these pieces of art complete. The framing he helped me pick out and put together complemented the drawings so well, I couldn't believe when I saw the finished product. I went to Michaels in Chula Vista and the service was excellent. Although I did not find what I needed, employees called the Midway store and asked that my items I was looking for be placed on hold for this specific day only. The only thing I had to do was go pick up myself. I made the trip later in the evening and asked a female floor employee for help on my held items. She did not greet me or seemed friendly, just referred me to the cashier. Made it seem like I was interrupting her. I went to cashier and they checked the items on hold and did not find anything for me. Cashier told me which aisle I could look for the items myself. I had trouble finding it. So I went back to another cashier and asked for help. Cashier called someone from the floor to help me. What a surprise, female floor employee #1 showed up. She did help me find what I needed. Michaels seems to have a bit of everything, but I only go in there when I need something quickly, or if there's a major sale and I have a coupon. A lot of their merchandise in made in China, which is synonymous with cheaply made, in my mind. I guess it's like that with most stores these days. However, what is exceptional about this particular Michaels is their customer service, which blew me away on my last visit a couple of days ago and will keep me coming back. On this occasion, I was looking for materials and tools for wire wrapping jewelry. As soon as I entered the store I was greeted by a young male salesperson who led me to the appropriate aisle. I had never done wire-wrapping, so I was completely naive about this craft. I decided to browse. After looking around for a while, I realized that I definitely needed help. A friendly older female employee (sorry to reference her age, but it's so nice to see someone with life experience and patience available to assist) named Teresa proved to be a godsend . Teresa spent a lot of time with me and was fabulous, directing me not only to potential tools, materials, and a reference pamphlet, but also retrieving information on wire wrapping classes at Michaels, which I didn't know they offered. Teresa also gave me advice on the most economical way to get started on my new hobby and other valuable tips. I decided I was in over my head and put off a decision until I had more time to devote to this endeavor and could take a class or two. However, I still needed some pre-made picture frames, which happened to be on sale. I was offered assistance by a woman who appeared to be in charge of the framing department, but turned her down because I knew what I wanted. I ended up purchasing two frames at a reasonable price (on sale), plus I combined it with an email coupon, which made it an even better deal. At checkout, I let it be known that I was on public transportation and needed the frames wrapped to protect them. (I felt like I was being a pain, even though I consider myself to be easy-going.) The cashier directed me back to the framing department, but the help had vanished. After standing there for about five minutes, a wonderful (also older) guy named Ken came to the rescue. I told him I was taking the bus and was worried about damaging the frames en route. He said, "Don't worry! I'll take care of you!" Several minutes later, Ken returned with my frames. He totally exceeded my expectations by carefully wrapping each frame individually, then bundling them together into one package. I couldn't believe my eyes! In contrast, two days after my visit to Michaels, I went to Dick Blick art supplies in Little Italy for some specialty items. Normally the service there is fine. On this visit I decided to do a price comparison for a custom frame. The woman in the framing department acted like she was doing me a favor by waiting on me and, in the process, had a nasty exchange with a fellow employee.
