I drove to this store (55 S McClintock Dr Ste 125, Tempe AZ 85281) to have a mat cut for a picture. Although the store was nearly empty and employees were chatting or stocking shelves, the manager told me quite smugly that it would take 3 days to cut a single picture mat. I stared around at the empty store and said, "You mean, there's no one who can cut me a simple picture mat? I will take 3 minutes." She stood behind the mat counter, with no customers waiting and almost nothing going on in the store, and said I would have to come back and pick it up in 3 days. I went to Hobby Lobby and they cut the mat for me in 3 minutes. They framed the mat against the picture inside the frame and added a picture hanger hook for me right there in the store. THAT is customer service!! I'm never going to Michaels again! read more

I love this store. They don't carry EVERYTHING, but they do have a decent amount of crafts and kits. Sign up for their newsletter and you'll get 40-50% off coupons weekly. I go here to buy my baking pans and kits just for the hell of it. Also have really neat frames. Right now I'm taking their cake decorating course 1 class with instructor Brad. LOVE it. Michaels is like a dream for both kids and adults.There is so much going on here,every aisle is an overdose of cute stuff you didn't need until NOW. This place is easily DIY heaven, but do not be fooled i have ended up buying a lot of cool stuff here that i could never use.All that art and painting stuff, jewelry,beads,papercraft and the oh-so-adorable baking stuff. This store makes me believe that i have a creative bone in my body.So my advice would be not to splurge, take your time and you will find some useful and beautiful products.Also keep checking for percentage offs and coupons (some of the DIY stuff can be a tad expensive). They have a custom floral section, where you can design your own arrangement with a personal touch. The store is nice and big,very organised but finding an employee to help you can be a challenge. It's a chain, so it's similar to the rest. I have been here a few times, and the customer service is pretty sketchy. I get the feeling they are trying to save money by not having a ton of staff at any one time. You kind of have that Home Depot feeling of being lost at sea, where you are pretty much on your own. The coupons are nice, and I have had cashiers offer to help me find coupons to save a few bucks, which is nice. I just wish they had more staff to help customers, most of the time I would spend more money- if only there was someone to answer a quick question. read more

The store is a nice big store with a lot of selection, but on our visit many of the aisles were disorganized and several things were misplaced. There were also a number of empty shelves and the clearance section trying to move all of the fall items out was a complete shambles. The staff was friendly and somewhat helpful (somewhat because two of them couldn't answer a simple product question) and the checkout process was a smooth one. All in all, I wouldn't hesitate to return to this location. I just wouldn't expect to be WOWed. read more

I've said before that I'm a fan of Michaels, and it's totally because A) I'm a fan of crafting and B) I am super susceptible to the power of suggestion. After one walk around a Michaels I'm ready to learn how to bead my own jewelry, start knitting, decorate a cake, reframe all my artwork, update my home decor and create an abstract painting. I just get excited. Michaels as a company used to have a reputation for being small, messy, confusing, etc. The newer stores are a big step up from that, and the older stores are trying to be improved by corporate. This one is new enough that it feels open, it's intuitive, and unless it's the holiday rush, it's fairly clean. I drive to this one from my home in Chandler just to avoid the location right down my street. Customer service is so-so. I have no major complaints, but I doubt the employees are greeting every customer or following all of the other handful of guidelines I know they have. On that note... What happened to this Michael's? It's huge and used to have a great selection, as well as reasonably fast checkout. The store is now so badly organized that the same sale storage boxes have aisles in at least three sections, but adhesives seem to have vanished other than a tiny display of spray and stick glue (by scrapbook paper) plus some tape over by wrapping paper. There is no Mod Podge. What kind of craft store does not carry Mod Podge? Yarn crafts have been decimated to make room for desperate efforts to imitate Hobby Lobby's selection of housewares. Denim apparently has to happen for spring. The store is almost empty of shoppers and there are no clerks on the floor to ask questions of. I get that it's good to freshen and rearrange the stock to encourage random browsing, but when I've been down every aisle twice and still don't have the really basic staple I came here for, ur doin it rong. Y'all have more competition since Hobby Lobby arrived a few years ago. Try harder. read more

Went Christmas shopping here this week and it had everything I need. Conveniently had all the frames I was looking for, in stock, and was able to get photo albums, stockings, and santa hats all in one place. Being located in Tempe Marketplace helps too. I will definitely be back to this location. Beware that parking is somewhat had to find during the holidays. read more

Usually when I have gone to a Michael's Arts & Crafts store I leave screaming and running for my car. Just because of the over whelming amount of crafty people and how small and tight the aisles are.... this one, not the case. The aisles are nice and big, the departments are all labeled with giant signs hanging from the roof, very easy to see. I was able to get in, out and on my way with no issue and in less than 20 minutes. Only complaint I had, the maze they make you go through to check out is a little obnoxious and I inevitably ended up grabbing two impulse buys, grr! read more

I used to frequent this particular location... until last week. The item I was looking for was out, with the larger, more expensive option stocked in its place. When I asked how it was 29.99 instead of 7.99, the cashier shrugged and said "we're out of that one, sorry." and then I was met with a blank stare..... This is not the first time this has happened, I told this cashier I didn't want any of the other things in my cart and left. Horrible customer service, too much clutter, never anyone around to help you find something, and too many blank stares. More expensive things being stocked in their cheaper counterparts' shelf space? That's what this Michael's is all about. Deception. There is a competitor craft store down the street, the service isn't much better, but at least I know what to expect. read more

I really like this Michaels. Between the Camelback Colonnade location and this one, they are two of my favorite places to get art & craft supplies. It is well-kept and organized, and the staff is friendly. They are also helpful when you need to locate a product. This location isn't always as well-stocked as some other Michaels locations in the valley, but I typically visit this location at least once a week, and you can order online to have specific items shipped to the location you want. Everyone who works here is always so nice, helpful, gives ideas and walks around the store with you. This is my first time at this location, and it seems like a pretty well staffed and organized store. I especially loved their 50% off Hanukkah sale today. Not many people around town carry Hanukkah items, so thank you Michaels for recognizing the needs of the Jewish people. This made my holiday experience so much better and shopping easier. read more

Took my kids here to do the creativity slime class they offer. It was $5 per kid for the lady to make the slime for them and then the kids got to add glitter and beads to it. It was awkward for my kids since she just sat there in her phone. Wasn't worth the money. I thought she was going to let them make the slime and possibly put on a smile. read more

Great store, fun to peruse and let your inner artist take hold. I enjoy shopping at Michaels, as it is my favorite craft store, but this location is not my favorite. Inside the Tempe Marketplace location feels as if it is packed to the brim, and to add, has smaller space in the aisles which is why I don't like the other craft store, rhyming with, "SnowMan's." read more

Why do craft stores always smell like cinnamon? Maybe there's some scientific study the Michaels people commissioned where they found that the "Scent of Christmas" causes otherwise sane people to spend obscene amounts of money on those rubber stamps and scrapbooking scissors. I don't know but it freaks me out. It also makes me sorta hungry. But what it doesn't do is make me want to buy anything. And the woman in a cat hair-covered black velour tracksuit blocking the yarn aisle ain't helping things either. read more

It's near Christmas time and figured I would stop by Michaels to use a 50% off coupon to buy a wreath or some ornaments. Walked into the store and saw all Christmas items 40-60% off. Since this is the first time we have a house and tree to decorate, I went all out and bought a cart full of Christmas items! Never seen a sale on Christmas items before Christmas time so why not. Was here yesterday and the girl running the registered rushed us saying that the cash register was timing her and that we had to hurry up and put everything on the counter. Checking out is usually kinda slow but the cashiers do honor mobile coupons which you can find right off their website. They normally have 40% off an item. Be sure to read the fine print though. A lot of name brand items are excluded. read more

I buy a lot of brushes here, my favorites are simply simmons, royal and I like the new metallic silver ones, forgot the name. The brushes sell out quickly so everytime I am in, I check the brush section and grab a few. read more

I'm not sure why this Michael's has such bad reviews, but this is one of the best Michael's I've been to in terms of organization, wide aisles, & a nice/new store setting. The interior feels new, the aisles are wide, and everything is stocked & organized well! The latter quality is a hard one to come by at most Michaels. The people working there are friendly and it wasn't hard to find someone to help. I've had to get help with someone getting a ladder to grab items off high shelves and looking throughout the store for a specific item, and found both associates very friendly and helpful. Lastly, there is just 1 line into all the cash registers so you don't have to deal with old ladies just walking up to separate registers instead observing 1 honorary line...Love this Michaels! read more

I like Michael's because at least they Joann's in Mesa-Riverview area. (see my post on Joann's craft store for reference) even though when I bought scrapbook materials that I absolutely had to have, and my husband needed a glass vial for his personal project- the lady on the floor we talked to swore up and down there were no glass jars whatsoever (?) -'ahem! they were all over the freaking store lady! practically half the shelves had some type of glass decor!' and - even though the cashier forgot to put the scrapbook in the bag- (yet charged me for it) it was ok. super speedy line though, I was in line less than 2 minutes, wow! luckily the scrapbook was on sale for 3$. I did get quite a few other items at great prices. I love their sales! still saved quite a bit. read more

I went in today looking for ribbon for winter formal this weekend for my store because i work in the floral dept. with my girlfriend and she was asking a employee about classes they had going on & prices and she told us well they should be listed ??? Like where are they she wasn't very clear on how much they were so I brushed it off then it seen we were a brother to her there was some liquid she was stirring so we ask what it was it looked pretty cool she said she couldn't really explain it I just went looking the other way I was done with the unfriendliness only one associate bothered helping us not one hello from the 5 associate's there such a bad experience. read more

Last visit was not fun. I needed help in the paint isle and the two employees in the area wanted to have a conversation that I had to continually interrupt to find this or that etc. and they would even stand on tippy toes and point out the direction of what I was looking for rather than showing me so that they could get back to their juicy conversation.
