Having Michaels in Vancouver has been very helpful in supporting my small business. Michaels supplies everything that I needed for my creative projects. I love it because everytime I need something they have it. They also have a big selection of everything. The only thing I don't like about them is that they sell everything twice as its regular price in other places and then provide a coupon for 40-50 % for you so that after you use the copoun the price of that itdm becomes like the item's regular price in other places. Yoh can use one coupon per day. That is why if I want two items I have to go there in two different days to be able to use the coupons. Overal the the coupons are a headache. I wish they just made all their prices reasonable so that we did not need to use any coupons. However their location on Broadway is very nice and l love going there and shopping. The staff are very helpful and knowlgable. read more

Wow. This place is HUGE or at least cleaner than the location I normally go to. They had a lot of selection but there was something missing. That could of been clear concise organization. Some things didn't make sense on their location to other supplies. In general Michael's prices are quite high but that seems about normal now. For me, I like that it's convenient to a sky train but it isn't enough for me to come from New West. I didn't see any security guard so maybe that was just for the holiday season. I like this location for the yarn selection because it is pretty big. However, I have noticed it doesn't carry as many choices as others. When the other stores are out of a popular type, I notice that this location usually has it. Maybe there aren't as many knitters in this hood. They also have a good stock of knitting accessories, such as yarn cutters, needle stoppers, and knitting markers. I've peeked into the paper section too, and it wasn't too shabby. I picked up a cool crafting lazy susan contraption here, and it has made my workshop so much more organized! read more

I'm going to give this location one star because of their lack of customer service and selection. I called this store in advance to check if they had a certain product, and I was greeted rudely by an associate. They cut me off, and told me that they didn't carry my product but would have realized that they did if they let me finish. I asked specifically if they had any "in stock" because the Burnaby location was completely out. She said yes, it was in stock. When I got there, they were completely out. When actually talking face to face with a sales associate at the location, I had to tour the isles and basically chase someone down to ask them a question. Your 800 phone number hangs up and sends you to there chat where you go around and around and around for hours.The few times I was able to reach a human you come up with about three different responses. this is forewarning to anyone who may be approaching this establishment thinking it is an art supply store ... this is like a wal-mart for pre-school craft supplies. Any actual art supplies here are so over-priced .. it makes me cry to think that there are people who have actually paid $25 for a pack of pens that cost $13 up the street a bit. When I asked the floor staff where the drawing pens were - all I got was stunned silence - the staff I witnessed had NO idea what they are doing or selling. If you need construction paper and buttons and colored ribbons and glue that's safe to eat - this is the place for you - but if you need quality art supplies check yo-self at the door son! The store is crowded with enormous shelves that tower over you as you rummage through the random layout. for the amount of actual product they sell they sure could open this place up a lot .. I found it extremely uninviting - and there was absolutely none of the creative vibe that I normally feel when I walk into an art supply store ... this place is more like a hyper sterile scrap-booking megastore for .. well - to be honest - the only people I could actually think would like this place are pre-school teachers and babysitters. Had to yelp this one because franly it's just a weird vibe here.. like all the wrong elements of the modern commercial experience were brought together to create a wholly confused and functionally retarded operation.. I was going to buy some cheap ass pens but when I saw the gigantic bank-like hedge maze of cash registers that was more suited to a Safeway than a craft store - I put my crappy pens down and just walked out. Never going back - not when there is a real art supply store up the street that sells all the same stuff as well as genuine art supplies for dedicated enthusiasts and professionals alike at normal prices. read more

I can never find anything in this location and no one in the store seems to be able to help. I just wanted to find plain white T shirts but I went to the counter to ask for help and I was directed to the lady who was helping several customer at the till. I might as well do it myself then. I found the shirts eventually after 15 minutes of looking around. The service was absolutely horrible and if I could help it, I would not be back anytime soon. read more

Us an Update to my Review; I went to Lee Valley and purchased: 10 - 1/2" Earth Magnets at 1.36 ea. 3 - 3/4" Earth Magnets at 3.90 ea. 3 - 3/4" Hooks with E-Magnets. Sold as a 3 hook set for 9.20 Total 34.50 + taxes: 38.65 I estimate that I used $5 in fuel to drive there and back. Obviously it pay to shop around. read more

I just got kicked out of the store for the incompetent Manager. She could not deal with a return. I asked several questions and she felt offended. She told me not to come back, like she is the owner of the store ha ha ha poor little person.. Be aware this location the staff is EXTREMELY RUDE. I HATE this place, but yet I keep having to go back because they're the only hobby store left. Sigh....walking into Michael's is like walking into Walmart. Tall shelves with overflowing merchandise. Have no idea where to find things. Most of the staff there are new and inexperience, so they don't know where things are or have no clue what a flush wire cutter is. It's a shame. Finally a big-box craft store opens in Vancouver. Yes, we have Dressew, but NOT THE SAME. Love browsing at pretty much everything in Michaels, and if I could, I would buy out the store with each visit. However, I would have to be a billionaire. It's expensive and we all know this. I often know that I can get the same product at a local dollar store for significantly cheaper. Anyway, this store in particular has it's grand opening today. Walking home from an appointment last night, I noticed they opened for a couple hours. Excited, I entered the store. Was informed that they were closing in about 8 minutes. Ok, no prob. I'll be quick and I respect that. However, within 5 minutes I was approached by 3 different employees that the store was closed. They did this rudely and with a look of irritation. After the 3rd employee, I said, I know - I also just heard the announcement 1 minute earlier. She knew approached this the wrong way, so backed away shamefully. We left the store immediately. My fiance used to work at Future Shop about 10 years ago, and he said they were told to never do this. This just proves my theory that the service industry in Canada has gone way downhill in the past decade. You'd think with surviving recessions, and with a new opening of a store they employees wouldn't be so eager to lock up. Anyway, I'll be back to the store, but it's important to note good/bad service so hopefully we can start making shopping experiences better when times are already touch economically. I am a fan of Michael's...only when I have a coupon, however, after travelling across the border and discovering that I can buy stuff for 50% of what it costs here plus I can use my coupon...I've been shopping locally for craft at home less. I had no choice but to go in and grab some yellow fabric dye for a Devo costume I was making. I really don't like the layout of this location in comparison to the one on Marine Drive. The staff are horrible and unhelpful. They all act like they have a stick up their ass. Even though the Marine Drive location may not have crafters per se, at least I've been given decent help. Broadway location: staff could be friendlier! Stricter coupon rules than the North Vancouver or Downtown location so with difficult parking, it's a less desirable location. Good variety because of their size though. Note: if you need to make a return without a receipt, it understandably goes on a gift card but they take an automatic 20% off your refund because they assume you used a coupon. Really bad service and indifferent store clerks. I tried to get 2 pictures framed. After waiting half an hour and being told by an VERY RUDE MANAGER that it would be another hour, I left. The Manager seemd to feel that I was disturbing him. There were several clerk just standing around doing nothing and on a Sunday morning the place was empty. The prices were very high and the manager deliberately steered me to a high priced frame when I had indicated a preference to a less expensive one. I'm going back to my local framer who is pleasant and where I do not have to wait over half an hour to get served. read more

I kind of get the creeps when i come to this store. Everything is synthetic and made from materials that are not natural in the environment. That being said i heard they had cheaper knitting supplies , and this place seems to be the answer to a cheaper crafter. They had a decent selection of knitting supplies, especially if your a beginner. read more

Started up some DIY projects and thought for sure that Michaels would have everything I could dream about needing. I wish they had more variety and were less expensive as it felt a bit constraint. Having a Loyalty card would also a good idea to implement in my opinion. read more

Thanks to certain Yelpers, I've become addicted to knitting. This is an awesome place for inexpensive yarn, esp. when they're having a 50% off boxing week sale! But apparently they have a yarn sale of some sort every week. They also have some good, natural fiber yarns such as cotton, bamboo, alpaca, merino wool etc. But majority of the selection is acrylic. I did get strange looks when i walked to the cashier with a basket full of yarn skeins. read more

They never seem to have the thing I need in stock. I always get the same excuses "we usually have it in stock", "try another location", "order it online", my favorite is "our shipment is coming in soon, so check back in a week or so" and when I do it still hasn't been re-stocked. Where is a staff member? Why only one cashier? Hello? Absurd, unfair, expensive pricing of products. *Here's an example of a specific pricing discrepancy I dealt with. I wanted to buy a 4" and a 6" bamboo embroidery hoop. They sell all the hoops individually, but those small ones never seem to be in stock. They also have a packaged 'set' of the same hoops, same "Loops & Threads" company, which contains a 4", 6" and 8" hoop. So if the individual hoops are sold out, I should just get the packaged one nbd, because you would think they're the same price, right? Here's where it gets crazy. Individually this is what the hoops cost before tax: 4" - $1.99 6" - $2.49 8" - $2.79 total = $7.27 The plastic sealed package, with the same 3 size hoops, from the same company, is a whopping $16.99 before tax!! That's over double the price for the exact. same. thing. Nothing could be done on their end to price match. The faceless company overlords make the price. I was in early August with my aunt looking for scrapbooking supplies for our first every scrapbooking experience. Holy moly, aisles and aisles of scrapbooking items! I was nearly overwhelmed but impressed with the sheer variety of items they had. I frequent Michaels in Langley but this was the first time I was in for these kinds of supplies. We had our arms loaded with two albums (on sale!) and a bunch of paper when we were brought a basket by one of the employees. He was very helpful and found us everything we needed for our artsy adventure. We planned to scrapbook our trip to Italy so he helped us find stickers, paper and all sorts of things Italy related (Bonus! A few brands of stickers we where purchasing where discounted too) By the time we were headed to the cashier we thought our wallets would be crying but to our delight they were having a storewide sale of 25% off if you signed up for their e-newsletter with your email. Score! I was very happy with our experience there (I know how pricy this store can be but I often put up with it due to the variety of items you can find there. Michaels was my staple when I was taking my arts courses at Kwantlen. Their acrylics often go on sale which really helps a students budget. read more

Everything that people say about the customer service is correct. The staff could use some training, but I have found staff demeanour doesn't take a high priority in a lot of Vancouver retail establishments. Also, everything that everyone says about the selection being below average is also true. Several weeks before Christmas and the place was stocked like it was several weeks after Christmas. I went in for wreath making supplies and left with nothing. It's a nice, big store with not a whole lot going on in it. Say what you will about Hobby Lobby, but if there was one in Vancouver it would put Michaels out of business in no time. read more

Great selection for everything arts and craft related. I went in to kill some time before an appointment but found a nice calligraphy pen for a reasonable price. I have also previously found great supplies for a bachelorette party. The prices are average, so not as cheap as the dollar store, but great if you need a large variety of supplies in one stop, this is the place to check out! read more

Came here just to look around. This place is big for a Michael's store. Just browsing around and noticed that they do sell a lot of things, not just art supplies. They had their blowout of Halloween decorations at 80% off. They already had some of their Christmas items for sale already. Next holiday I'll be shopping here to Decorate the household. read more

I frequent ALL the Michaels stores, this one is most convenient for me. If you happen across employees that have great customer service skills, this store is Awesome!! But on the few exceptions that you happen across a employee lacking the knowledge and concept of customer service... it is the worst experience EVER! The other Michaels Stores are no exception. I just pray each time I enter into one of them... that I get the good ones. So when I do, I tend to shop more frequently... when I don't... I take a Michaels holiday. read more

Poor selection of stamps and dies for card making. I also find their practice of locking merchandise annoying particularly when you cannot find a salesperson on the floor to assist you. To wait in line at the cash register simply to ask for someone to assist you is a waste of time. I understand there must be a reason for them to lock merchandise as they do, but it is still a nuisance. read more

Today was my most disappointed day at Michaels. I had been a customer in their various stores in BC, but I was so surprised and sad to have not found at least 3 items in this new location. Their staff are working hard, but I don't find things I want. With $3.5 per hr parking, I left empty handed in less than half hour. The 40% off discount didn't trick me buying useless stuff. The store was just too small to house items I can more readily find in the Marine Drive or Richmond store. I will still go to those stores, but not this one again at least for another year. Went in to get some fabric glue yesterday. Asked an associate where the fabric glue was located and was expecting the usual "over there near the picture frames." Instead I was wowed that I was led to the exact spot as it is "difficult to find". Then I was given a quick run-down of the various types of fabric glue available. The service was wow and I wish I had the wherewithal to note the associate's name. This was in total contrast to the service level received at Fabricland Marine Drive the day before. On top of that, I used a 50% off coupon sent to my email and walked out with fabric glue coating slightly over $3 (as opposed to $18 at Fabricland) albeit the container was smaller (which was perfectly fine with that as I only needed a little bit). I took a piece of my own artwork in to Michaels to be framed. Since I'm new to the Victoria/Langford area and really had no idea on where to go, this seemed like a good option. First, I was surprised at the price which I though a little high for what I was getting, but with a two week turnaround, I didn't have a lot of choice. We live on one of the SG Islands so it's not like we can drop around to the store whenever. The girl behind the counter didn't seem to know a lot but we went with it and paid up front, something I don't like to do in a case like this. I showed up two weeks later to pick up the picture. The girl behind the counter seemed surprised that I wanted to see it but she unpacked it from its wrapping. Right away I could see that the second layer of matte was narrower on one side than on the other. I pointed it out to her. "Oh, yeah, I see it," she said." I just looked at her. So she said, "I guess I should have looked at it before I framed it." You freaking think so??? I asked her about fixing it but she said that the way the picture was secured in there she wasn't sure how easy it would be to take apart. I think she realized I was pissed off so she finally said that she could fix it. I asked how long? She wasn't sure, 15 minutes maybe. Which would have been fine except that I was running from appointment to appointment, I wasn't confident she could have it done in the fifteen minutes I would be waiting around, and she didn't seem at all confident that she could do it without destroying the original artwork. I finally gave up, took it as it was and left. I was most annoyed that they actually charge as much as they do for framing that crappy, but I was particularly annoyed that she did not at least offer to refund a small amount of my money for the mistake. However, their business model will do nothing but cost them money in the long run because I will tell every soul I know to go to Island Blue (which quoted me less, but I had already dropped the artwork off at Michaels unfortunately) or elsewhere for their framing needs and to NEVER USE MICHAELS for framing artwork! read more

the store stock seems a bit unorganized and the staff a bit dense but the selection and prices are great. They have everything you could need for craft stuff and some other random stuff thats cheap. I bought 2 picture frames specially sized for framing vinyl records and they cost 4 bux each!! score! Also they have all kinds of seasonal decorations and it already reeked like chritmas in there so if you are doing any home decorating or crafts get there! haha :-) a fun store in a great location, one of those places where even if you arent looking for something you wont leave empty handed! parking is a bit lame depending on when you go probably have to meter pay a block or so away. read more

This is the only Michael's location I have been to so perhaps it isn't indicative of the chain as a whole, but I gotta say, this location is pretty cheerless. It's organized and presented like WalMart but has specialty store prices. I am a knitter (Michael's has cheap, acrylic yarns) so this isn't the place for me. I am also a sewer (Michael's carries fusible interfacing in tiny over priced packages) so this isn't the place for me. Seems like the scrapbooking section is pretty good, but I don't do that, so can't really say for certain. Generally anything I have looked to buy at Michael's is very expensive but not really great quality. read more

I sometimes go to this location as I pass by it after work from Cambie Bridge. The only thing I don't like about this location is I have to feed the meter for parking. This Michaels is newer and just as big as the one in Richmond. The store is clean, tidy and well-organized. You can pretty much find anything you need for any type of arts & crafts from scrap booking to wood work, leather work, painting, knitting, cross-stitch, seasonal decorations, DIY's, books of all sorts, jewelry-making, candle/soap-making, a whole section of Martha Stewart collection, cake-making and the list goes on endlessly. There are clearance items at the end of certain aisles so keep your eyes open. Their prices are ok so make sure you use your 40% coupon (can be found online weekly on any REGULAR priced items). Their staff are usually around in red vests and they are quite helpful if you need help locating certain items. Carol, the cashier that helped me at checkout was exceptionally wonderfully nice and super helpful. She has certainly made my night and I would give her 5 stars! read more

Huge selection, not much choice. Rather pricey. Couldn't find the frame I was looking for. Couldn't find anything remotely suitable that was NOT made in China. I think one frame was made in Malaysia, everything else - China. None of the staff offered any assistance - they seemed few and far between. No one was at the framing department. My experience with customer service (in framing) was excellent... no quibble with the framer, Kim, and the manager, Emanuel, who tried their best to be as accommodating as Michaels' policies would allow. But having to wait 2 whole weeks for a simple matte to be cut is ridiculous! Apparently the equipment required for custom cut mattes is not in this store, nor is it in any store in Western Canada. Your order has to be sent to Mississauga, Ontario. Not only do you have to wait an eternity, the cost of a small matte was $25.42! I also wanted them to help me with a small change of hardware on the back of 2 frames. They are willing to do this, but the charge is steep. In future, I will go to a private framer - many of which will do this for nothing. This store is a great supplier of crafts, but be prepared to pay outrageous prices... company profit is evidently more important than customer goodwill. read more
