HOORAY FOR THE EXTENSION OF THEIR STORE!!!!!!!!!!!!! im glad that they now stock more of the proper art supplies here, but be warned that their prices for the art supplies are still a bit pricey compared to pearl or utrecht. the art supplies make sense when you run into buy one get one deals and they offer NO STUDENT DISCOUNT. be sure to memorize how much everything goes for (or check internet prices) before buying art supplies here because you might be paying more. example: that huge portfolio bag with a huge clipboard in it is regularly priced at 49.99 - even with a coupon its still 25 bucks. the same thing from pearl (of course it will look a bit different) is about 20 bucks without the discount. for crafting, this place beats out pearl by far - they have better felt material and the store is a bit more organized... but you know you are paying for that organization, right?! read more

Holy crap this store is big and confusing. The glue guns were in the very back corner of the store which made no sense at all. Actually, I wandered around for way too much time looking for things because it seems that the store lacks any and all organization. But anyway, they do have everything you could need for a craft project if you are willing to take the time to search. And good luck finding someone who works here to help you. I actually ended up asking a customer where she had found her glue gun after wandering around aimlessly for a while. Also, we went on a Saturday afternoon so I am sure that is a huge factor but the store was SO CROWDED. Yikes. This store is an absolute must on every crafter and scrapbooking aficionado. They have a lot of craft supplies; stickers; tools; as well as acid-free 12 X 12 scrap booking paper to fill your album. The best thing this store will not burn a deep hole in your wallet as it's competitively priced. However, their aisles are messy and not always organized. The store aisles are sometimes empty with no product. They offer bi-weekly coupons in the local newspaper for 20% on your entire purchase. On the negative side, they do not have any stores in Manhattan as one must travel to the outer boroughs or the suburbs of New York City. read more

I'm just saying...I went back to Michaels yesterday after a longggg hiatus and it is amazing. It's now like a "real" Michaels that you would find anywhere: big, open, spacious and, *gasp*, well-stocked! I found a ton of odds and ends for my up-coming wedding and almost everything I was looking for. AND the line was quick and efficient & the cashier actually seemed to know how to use the register. Good all-around crafts store. There's a good selection of acrylic yarns, which is something that's lacking in many of the shi-shi upscale yarn shops in the city. I love that there's something for everyone. My friend and I bought fake leaf garlands for last year's Halloween costumes. I bought cute holiday-themed decorative ribbon, for presents and whatnot. I also got some batting. They also have Martha Stewart's line of crafting supplies, which is quite nice, with other knickknacks and stuff. I walk around and get inspired to try new crafts, because I know I can get the beginner's stuff cheaper here than other places. God knows I didn't start crocheting using fine alpaca. read more

Theyve expanded recently and lowered prices. They have a broad selection of stuff. A lot seems skewed towards paste books and corny crafts. I usually come here for frames, which are cheap. You have to be careful however because the store brands are often scratched or faulty, and they give you a hard time when you return them. The lines here are painfully long. They have 10 cash registers and two clerks, one of whom is usually in an iron lung. I kind of think its a scam to get you to walk by the immense wall of impulse buy stuff. read more

Called the front to ask was there someone to help, and when they sent someone was told they were on break and to come back in 45 minutes, when I looked stunned by the answer, I was met with a roll of the eyes as I walked away. I love Michael's because I'm an out of control child in an adult's life, and this Michael's is as good as any other. Weird toys! Wooden shapes! Metal dangly things! YAAAY!! While it was nice to get 60% off custom framing - our order is over a week late (were told it would be ready in 10 days and it has been 17 now) and when I called today to check on the status they said that no one was in the framing department until after 3:30 and I had to call back later - they wouldn't go check the status of the order. The woman in the framing department was great when we placed the order - very helpful and went out of her way to help us (thus the 2 stars) but the fact that we still don't have our orders is frustrating!!! read more

I could shop at Michael's all day if it were free! Even if I'm not buying something, it's always fun to look around. It's a pretty big store, and they expanded too. They now have a bigger baking section for decorations, utensils, etc. (My top five fave section in the store.) They usually have seasonal things on sale the second you walk inside, and it's tempting. Sometimes they even have cute stamps on sale for like 30 cents! I stocked up on stamps I might not use very often (Valentine's themed)... it's an issue. But they were on sale! And cute! How can I resist? The staff can be helpful, if you happen to find one near you. But the lines are always soo long. Especially during the holidays. They have great stuff here. Some things can get pricey, but you can become a member for free & get really good discounts! (Or just use the 50% off one item coupon that is usually always on the receipt.) Truly the supermarket of crafts. Great for the basics - ie bags of thread, bags of buttons, bags of leaves, bags of whatever and what-not. Also good selection of glues, basic papers, basic hardware, basic basics. Fairly good cheap bins near the cash register. However - NO MATERIAL!?!?!?! Are you kidding me? Okay, this place isn't exactly Pearl Paint but it looks more "laid-back" and less people (places, of course). I love getting my supplies here - pretty paper, colored poster paper that won't wear off, pretty cards, etc. It gives me a "country-sided" feeling..probably because it's so neat and quiet. This is such a great arts and crafts store, with not only crafts but other household goods. For example, their frame selection is out of this world. (However, their custom framing prices are nothing to write home about.) My biggest complaint is the checkout line, which can move very slowly. However, if you get here during a non-peak time, this store is any crafter's paradise! read more

The first time I discovered Michael's was in college. These chain arts and craft stores are a great one stop shop to fulfill all of your creative needs. From scrap booking, to woodworking, to knitting, and painting. Plus on top of that, the prices are pretty decent, and I feel every time I walk into one there are 40% off sales. Most recently I bought a large poster sized picture frame for about $12. My only negative here which there is a consensus is the incredibly long lines at check out. I feel everyone either checks out all at the same time or there isn't enough staffing at the registers. I swear one time I walked in the lines were empty and 5 mins later as I was going to check out there were 30 people waiting. It must be to get people to buy their $1 impulse items. read more

I love Michael's. I wish I lived here actually. I agree with alot of the reviews stating that the lines are CRAZY long. Usually they have at least 4-5 registers open and the line is still huge. I think that Micheal's can definitely hire some more people, but I actually understand it a bit. Its the only store of its kind in the area, and it is easily accessible by public transportation so people FLOCK here. I also blame last minute shoppers who spend 3-4 minutes trying to pull up mobile coupons on their smart phones while being rung up (yes, I have shamefully been that person before..don't judge me) You cant shop in here without a coupon, they are listed right on the website so make sure to grab yourself some! The employees can be hard to find if you have any questions, but when I do run into them 60% of the time they are super helpful and I think that the newer staff and less dedicated staff are the ones who are not. read more

For whatever reason, I feel as though this Michael's is less well stocked than other Michael's I have been to in the Boston area and SF Bay Area. The people who work here also know less about the products they carry, which was a little annoying when I was asking for help. The beading section here is the worst. The selection here is extremely limited, and the types of beads and findings was enough to make me decide that I didn't want to pursue the project I wanted based on the products available here. So I've decided on something else. However, I will say that the scrapbooking section is decent and comparable to other arts and crafts stores I have been to. And as other reviewers have said, their Martha Stewart crafts section is really nice and has a good variety of craft items. Come here for the basics, but when it comes to really detailed stuff, go to a more specialized crafts store. read more

They have a very big store that holds almost everything one can ever imagine regarding hobbies on cake decorating, painting, flower arrangements, decorating, crafts, and more.. I am not a crafty person but Michaels always helps me find what I need. In general everyone is helpful and always pleasant. I almost always find what I need. On a recent visit one particular employee was particularly helpful. I would like to thank Leihei for all his help selecting and designing custom framing. He was patient, helpful, and very thoughtful of our needs. He even thought to contact us about a particular product we had asked about. I ordered a 6 foot nutcracker which they kept for me in storage while finding a delivery service for a couple of days with no issues. Chris a few days later assisted with the delivery. A great place to get the basics for craft projects and even just regular home decorating needs like picture frames. Yeah the yarn and bead selections aren't the greatest, but that's not really the point of this store- think more everyday supermarket, not gourmet items... It's actually not that hard to access by public transit either- there's a subway station a block away (the Northern Boulevard stop on the R & V lines)... Just beware the weekends- crowds upon crowds of people... the cash register lines can go on for days... read more

This place has everything you could ever want from a Michael's. The shelves are stocked well, and the variety is awesome compared to other Michael's stures that I've been to. I love coming here. Downsides: Staff have no idea what they're talking about, but it seems like all Michael's have this issue. I was sent on a wild goose chase over Gesso because no one knew what it was. I had to find it for myself. Also, the line. Oh, sweet lord, the line!! The line here can get pretty insane. Usually it moves fast enough, and there's enough people on registers - but it can be daunting when you see how many people are on it. read more

We don't have a Michaels in Hawaii so I ventured on the subway to Brooklyn from Manhattan during my vacation. The store was just a block away from the subway stop...very convenient. The store carried a large variety of merchandise, unlike what we are accustomed to at our only craft store here (Ben Franklin). Michaels should definitely set up shop here in the islands. I purchased a large amount of supplies to bring back to Hawaii and customer service there was awesome....ESP, Ruby. I expressed my need to FedEx the items to Hawaii and they provided me with a box and tape. Box was ready to ship. Wished I could have bought more items. While the store may have great items for crafting and decorating, good luck getting anyone to assist you. And if you do decide to stay in the store with NO help, bring a chair so that you have a place to sit while waiting in line. Or you can leave your cart full of items you intended to purchase, you'll have no problem finding where to leave it, there were about 6 carts full of discarded carts because of the line that never ended and with only 3/4 registers open, it left the customers discouraged and many left, myself included. read more

I mostly shopped at this store because it is the closest to me, but I now have a reason to shop for all my arts and crafts need here. A few months ago I ran into one of the managers, I don't know his name but you can spot him by his long hair, he is very courteous and very helpful in every way, he knows his way around the store and always willing to go the extra mile to help you. This store has changed a lot in the last year or so, I work at a school with nursery through 1st graders, I do a lot of art projects with the them, and never really cared to go into this store because of employee's lock of knowledge and enthusiasm to help a customer, I now go into the store to get all of my supplies from them, they have a new crew that is eager to help, and that's what working should be about, doing the best you can. Train the staff! I go to this Michaels because it is on my way home from work, so it is convenient, however, the staff needs to be re-trained at this location. I did an online order pick-up in-store transaction. Side note ~ nowhere online does it say that it can take up to 4 hours before you can pick up your merchandise, had I known that I would have called 2 hours earlier. So I arrive at the store, pick up a few other items, pay and then get my online order. So initially the cashier said my order was not ready and I should have waited until I received my confirmation email. When I showed her the email, her response was "oh" then she conveniently found the order. She said one of the items was missing and that's why it was highlighted. So I said, "can I look and see if they have a comparable item". She said "you can, but you will have to pay for it separately, I can't give you a credit or exchange". What? I said "ok, just give me a refund for the missing item". She tells me she can't give me a refund, but corporate will see that the item is highlighted and refund the difference. She has me sign a paper stating that I received my merchandise. I asked her if she noted on the sheet that one item is missing, she said yes. Two days later I call customer service and they have no knowledge of the missing item. I love Michael's and as long as you don't need assistance, this is a great store. But any interaction with this staff, you are doomed. They are not customer friendly and do not make you feel that they appreciate or value your business. Michaels is my favorite store on the planet. This location, though, is lacking a bit. Though it's incredibly large inside (compared to most Michaels stores), it seemed cluttered and disorganized. Michael's has always been my go-to. And why not, they are close, price is reasonable enough and they carry a wide range of yarns (I am a crocheter). So now Caron recently released brand new colors for their Latte Cakes yarn and I have gone online and saw people already buying them like crazy! Now I thought "hey, looks like it'll be great for a sweater". So off I went to this store on Northern. And they didn't have them. In fact, they hardly had anything on the yarn aisles. So today, went to their website and it said there that 17 colors are available, So I trudged back to the store only to be told that it will not be put onto the aisles until a few weeks later but yes they have it. What kind of store will do that? Other Michael's have already ran out of stock of these yarns and the one on Tower Square has yet to put them out? What kind of website do they have if it lies? And I get nothing for my effort to go there and stay loyal to this store? Yeah I guess they know, they are the only mega craft store around my neighborhood that they don't care that we keep going back and not being able to get what we want. Fix your website! don't say you have something when you don't. I am not a happy crocheter right now. read more

I give this place 4 starts mainly because they ran out of acrylics and other paints the day I was there. The isle were almost empty. But I did manage to get some Basic acrylics and good deal on canvases. Surprisingly canvases were waaaay cheaper than amazon. I'll definitely come and buy more. Lets start off with the good things: - its very convenient to the subway - very nice selection of products in the paper section - have a wonderful selection of frames - a nice selection of candles - helpful staff - 50% off coupons are readily available I love their 25%, 40%, and 50% off discounts.
