Michael's at any location is fun to me. This store is like the rest but too far for us to make the trip anymore. We had a lot of the locations in Manhattan and stopped coming to Queens. Currently you can get the same discounts and use your rewards online shopping. My daughter is always working on a project. There's never been any outstanding problems at this location concerning items in stock or customer service from the employees. Seasonal items go fast so get there early. read more

This is a solid Michaels. Well organized, easy to navigate, and never too busy. There are always deals to be had at this location, especially if you're shopping here right after a major holiday or end of the season. I've scored half off on fake flowers that look real, pots for plants after summer has ended, lots of cute fall decor once Christmas hits, etc. Service is a little bit hard to come by. Cashiers are always busy, and trying to find someone on the floor to ask a question to can be a tough to accomplish. That said, the convenience of always having what you need in stock plus the deals that always happen at this place will always keep me coming back. On my last visit I was in need of a few picture frames, and found exactly what I was looking for to fit my photos at a price not even Amazon could beat. read more

When I moved to this neighborhood three years ago, I thought this store was great. It's a big, clean store with tons of variety (though overpriced). The employees were never very helpful, but then they switched to self-checkout about a year ago. Now the employees are the rudest, laziest bunch I have ever witnessed. Today I had to ask three employees for help picking up an online order and all three either said to ask someone else, or it wasn't their responsibility, or they "didn't know how to do an online pickup". The third person finally attempted to help me and had to call a manager because he really didn't know what the protocol was. They didn't ask to see my ID or confirmation email and didn't scan my barcode so literally anyone could have walked out of the store with my purchase. It's really sad that such a beautiful store is being mismanaged like this. Paying customers deserve to be treated with care, but literally no one cares here. I will most likely continue to shop here because I love their merchandise, but will opt for home delivery when possible to avoid coming into this location. read more

The master chain of crafts and home decor, Michael's is usually better suited for the burbs than it is in NYC. There are so many local stores that offer more niche items than Michael's that I rarely find myself here, unless they're having a massive sale. Thankfully that's pretty much the case each time I'm here. What's the point of paying full price when there is a clearance sale happening every other week? Bring coupons if you can, there are usually a number of codes online that can be printed and redeemed in-store. There are definitely bigger Michael's stores than this Woodside location. However, the layout makes it fairly easy to find most general items and it's well maintained, which can't be said about many other stores in the area. This also includes the bathroom, which is a nice surprise. Parking isn't difficult since there is a lot, but it is a strip mall. Only a handful of spots are ever really available. My biggest gripe here is the customer service. Would it kill them to answer the phone once in awhile? It's a bit like pulling teeth to get them to help one find things. They're sometimes understaffed and massive lines form as a result whenever the sales are happening. A bit of advice: Come here and take your time. Peruse slowly because sometimes the mad rush is a little overwhelming in a space like this. If you like a particular item but find it too expensive, just make a note of it and come back a few days / weeks later when it's 40-70% off. read more

Love this crafts store for projects all-year-round. It's a big location, close to a bus and train and has everything you need for seasonal, holiday, or any kind of art project. I also order online if I know I cannot make it to the store to pick things up. They do offer ordering online and picking it up in store but I have not tried that option. I have come here to buy materials to make floral wreaths, organize my life (planners, washi tape, stickers), make holiday baked goods, get birthday party supplies, make cards, decorate my marathon singlet, plan a wedding shower --- you name the occasion and Michael's has been there for me. Went to this Michaels to pick up an online purchased on Saturday morning just when the store opened. Service was good and I retrieved my items. The store was empty so I browsed the aisles. I notice a young female standing too close behind me and swiftly turned around. I don't know what her intentions were maybe to pick my pocket but when I faced her she retreated and instead asked for money. Point of this tale is to be mindful in the store. With the influx of migrants in the woodside area thieves are rampant. I personally enjoy shopping at the Manhattan location but their selections was good. Long gone are the coupons. read more

Find this Michaels is a tad better than the one on Metropolitan. You need to flag down staff for assistance. Other than that they are busy putting things away. Here are some tips- 1) When you check out. Staff will just ring you up. You need to provide coupons and punch in phone number for rewards. They were giving out a promotional piece with XX amount of purchase. I had to remind the staff about the promotion. 2) Look online and papers for sales and coupons. 3) The bathroom is cleaner at this Michaels than the one in Metropolitan Avenue. 4) Customer service is a hit or miss. Ordered online for a curb side pick up. Thought it would be a quick and easy experience. Ended up being time consuming headache and I never got the product i ordered. Arrived at the store, called the store per email instructions, talked to an associate and was told they don't do curb side orders and to come into the store. So, masked up, gloves on, and into the store I went. There's a call button when you walk into the store for online pickel ups. Their email even stated there would be one inside the store, to then avoid the check outline and use the call button for online pick ups. Then for 15 mins I wait, while constantly pushing this call button to only have an associate tell me you have to wait in the check out line and show my email to the register, then an associate will help you get the item. ......dont understand what the point is in offering online or instore pick up when it would just be faster if had to just grab the product off the self and purchased myself. I have been to a few Michael's Arts and Crafts stores in both New York and Florida. They are pretty much the same with a plethora of material for the arts and craft hobbyist. There are paints, beads, flowers, arrangement material, paper, pots, ribbons, etc. etc. You name the item for a creative hobbyist and this place has it. What I really like about this place is their selection of frames for both photos and paintings. They have a large variety of styles, sizes, colors, etc. There is usually a few on sale and I found pricing about average. They have a custom framing facility with very competitive pricing and reasonable turn around time. As you walk in to a Michael's, it could be overwhelming. Their is so much stuff. I mean packed with stuff that you may just say "see you", but walk around the aisles and you will definitely find something for present or future projects. At Christmas time, you will definitely find your gift wrapping items; paper, ribbons, tape, boxes, any and all creative gift wrapping needs. Lots of creative fun. Overall, Michael's Arts and Crafts will surprise you. If you have kids; lots of creative kids stuff projects. While pricing may vary, I found it very fair and competitive. I've been to this location multiple times and I love it. Everything is layed out so neatly. I also love the options. I swear I always go into Michael's for 1 thing and leave with 10.. the struggle is real. I love crafting so I'm literally at Michaels like once a week. The people who work here are super helpful and nice. I like that this location doesnt get too crazy packed. This location is usually stocked well with Cricut supplies(I but so much of this..!) Look online before heading in because there are ALWAYS coupons! If you're a teacher, make sure to bring in your ID so you can get a discount( it's either 10% or 15% .. I always forget) if you're a crafter like me, make sure to sign up for Michael's rewards by adding your number so you get specials coupons sent to your email. I love Michaels but lets get down to the review and some basic points. First, if your a first timer when it comes to arts and crafts or designing they really have a good diy materials to use. Now, what could be changed to make this store much better. 1.) Have more people on the floor to answer any questions you have. I guess this seems obvious but for some reason this location doesn't have enough staff. 2.) The lines are huge, they really need to address this issue or they are going to lose customers. 3.) It can be pricey when compared to walmart or ace for certain craft products. The line here is CRAZY!! I waited 20 min. Trader Joe's has nothing on this place. This is one of the few craft stores in the area so it's much needed and they have everything you could possibly need. But next time I think I would rather order online that wait here. This place is seriously understaffed and disorganized. While I was waiting in line, a staffer said she was going to ring me up with her mobile reader. I thought great, now I can avoid waiting in line. WRONG. What she does is ring you up and give you a card, which you have to exchange at the cashier and still pay for everything. What the hell is the point of that??? When they do the same exact thing at other stores (Sephora for example) you are done when they finish ringing you up. What would have made more sense would have been for her to go and open up a register. So I just told her nevermind and I would wait in line. So I get up to the register and one of the items didn't have a SKU. So the cashier asked someone to go look for it on the shelves. She rung up my remaining 6 items while waiting for the price of the 7th. Unfortunately the poor thing was so dumb she was confused as to why I had 7 items and only 6 had been rung up. She went over the 6 items over again 2x. Then she says to her coworker "I have 7 items here, but only 6 are rung up." I finally said "That's because you're waiting for the price on the 7th item." And she responds "Yeah I'm waiting for a SKU."WOW, I know it takes all kinds, but seriously she was a couple beers short of a six pack. read more

There was one cashier here, who wasn't wearing a name tag. But has brown hair with green at the bottom- who was very VERY rude. She blamed me for the websites coupon not loading even after I showed her and explained that it wasn't loading the barcode. She said there's nothing she can do, despite the fact that there are printed coupons available for cashiers. Even after I was finally able to show her a barcode she made a point of asking how long I waited on line and asked why I couldn't have the coupon ready..... This place is my personal hell. Forty-three minutes of my life were taken from me on this never-ending line for a $3.99 roll of wrapping paper I could have easily stolen if I didn't have such damn pure morals. I can camp outside of the Apple store and score an iPhone16 quicker. Every time I make it to the counter, my transaction is complete in 30 seconds. I went there for one reason--safety eyes. they don't have any. they have all kinds of weird doll clothes made for freakin teddy bears but no safety eyes. or any eyes of any kind unless you're looking for googly eyes. their felt is cheaper than i can find in the city (20 cents a piece vs 4 and 3 for a dollar at places in the city but that hardly makes the trip worthwhile). there's also an entire aisle devoted to martha stewart arts and crafts (the aisle was pristine and completely unshopped). they might as well reposition the "arts and crafts" thing into a few key proficiencies--fucking scrapbooking galore (stickers, more stickers, rubber stamps, paper & all that crap), frames and more frames, some yarn & embroidery floss. They might as well not bother with everything else. Their bead selection is half assed, their ribbon selection is paltry (and it takes up an entire aisle--how can ALL your ribbon suck when you're giving it an entire aisle), everything else is just a mish mosh of crap. Perhaps I'm being a bit harsh because the one thing I went for they didn't have and admittedly, my fault for not calling ahead, but back in the day...EVERYONE CARRIED SAFETY EYES! they don't keep their crochet needles stocked, their yarn selection, folks, ain't that great...and isn't worth the hike from the LES. i did find a couple of skeins in random colors in a well hidden clearance bin and these were $1.50. if not for that, i would have left empty handed. not to mention the help there--is mostly disgusting. i was browsing the felt and had to listen to two morons in aprons yell to each other from across the store. the one moron was so fat i'm sure she'd have had a coronary trying to get any closer--her yelling was so off putting that i didn't bother asking her for help...indeed aside from her there WAS no one to ask for help. (my cashier, however, was extremely courteous and quick--she's the reason i'm giving 2 stars) Bottom line--if you live in the area--no doubt this is a great resource for you. if you have to hike out there for something specific call ahead to make sure they have it. their prices are no cheaper than you can find here in manhattan (and some items more expensive). Shockingly, the customer service is far worse than what you'll find at either p&s or any other store here in the city. all in all, this was an enormous waste of my time. read more

ARGH. The fact that I've been waiting on this line long enough to type a full review should explain my rating enough (15-20 minutes). But if you need more reason, then fine: While Michaels has great deals and an excellent selection of craft supplies for all occasions, how does that make this location different from any other? It doesn't. So, I view it as the idea that it's not what you do, but how you do it. This location is a train wreck, especially on weekends. I understand that you can't help crappy customers from putting items back in the wrong spot, but there are literally zero employees dedicated to working the floor or answering questions. Need help with something? That's nice, go figure it out. The only people who aren't inundated with customers are the two people working at the custom framing counter. No one gets custom frames unless you live in Manhattan. And have a last name of Rockefeller or Prescott or something equally pompous. Even then, the people at this counter will just direct you to a very disgruntled supervisor who will be annoyed you're asking anything at all. Overall, it's a very frustrating experience to be here. Will I come back? Yes, only because there isn't a comparable place to shop and get the same prices. It's just unfortunate that it's mismanaged/understaffed, because this is a great source for all your crafting needs. PS. Don't forget to use their 20% one regularly priced item coupon. I first learned of this chain while living in Miami where this store was really the only option of it's kind around. In the NY area there are really so many more options though I have found myself here at this location on Northern Blvd. on several occasions so I have to admit that this Michael's has served it's purpose for me. The pricing here is good which has saved this location from losing a third star. This location is one of the smallest that I have come across and several of the shelves are often disheveled and/or half empty. Sales assistance is generally disinterested and only a select few seem to be engaged enough to look me in the eye when they tell me they aren't sure if they have the particular doohickey that I am searching for. Now that Michael's has made it's way into Manhattan, I am just waiting for Jo-Ann Fabrics & Crafts to make their debut. I had received some coupons for Michael's via e-mail and decided to check it out with a fellow Yelper. From Jersey through train, the Manhattan Valley location and Woodside location in Queens is equidistant but since I'd be shopping with a Yelper who lives in Queens, the Woodside location won without debate. About these coupons. Never go to Michael's without a coupon! They have sales all the time and if you buy something there full price, it's just silly. The coupons save you up to 20% off. It's great especially if you are buying big ticket items like canvas, paint or framing. The store is huge and similar to the ones I've been to in California. It's true. If you've seen one Michael's, then you've seen them all. The lines are long and, of course, they have everything you didn't know you wanted. There's a ton of people buying for parties, talking about making stuff, and school children fighting with their moms. It's okay and even with the hectic environment, I find Michael's surprisingly calm. It's easy to kill an hour or hour and a half in there if you love making stuff or are a creative person. The place is great for inspiration and solutions for your latest crafting project. Before buying anything, I'd suggest carefully inspecting the merchandise to make sure it is not damaged or a return. One memory dish was already used and written on with permanent marker some couple's name. A box of fans had a few missing. Other items were just broken. Talk about junk. The good thing about Michael's is that the people who shop there see it as non junk and can somehow recycle it to their needs. Michael's is good for the bare basics. If you are looking for things of higher quality, I'd recommend going to an independent store. Just because there is a Michael's in Manhattan, I wouldn't automatically dismiss Queens. It is such an easy ride to Michael's on the R train to Northern Blvd. There's also Old Navy, a dollar store, Sports Authority, and McDonald's footsteps away. This review is purely based on customer service. Rose, apparently shes a manager...I have no clue how she got into that position. She is basically the rudest person I have ever met. Anyways I asked her where the greeting cards were and she treated me like an idiot...cuz Michaels is apparently not a good place to get cards...umm yes it is. So I asked another employee, hoping for a better answer, and here she comes "I TOLD you aisle 14!!!" Umm well I looked there and didn't see them...then she preceded to berate me like I was a child. Dear someone--anyone!--at the corporate level for Michael'a crafts: Do something about this understaffed location. Every. Single. Time. I come here, the line is absurdly long and no, it does not move quickly. Under what circumstances should I have to wait in line for 20 minutes (as I did today) to buy 1 or 2 little items? This is ridiculous. Furthermore, the last time I was here and (of course) the line was insanely long, an employee walked right out of the EMPLOYEES ONLY area with a Starbucks beverage and stood there leisurely. A woman in line finally says to her "can't you open up a register, the lines are so long!" And the employee responds "uhhhh I'm on break but whatever" and then takes another five minutes to open up a register. HOORAY FOR THE EXTENSION OF THEIR STORE!!!!!!!!!!!!! im glad that they now stock more of the proper art supplies here, but be warned that their prices for the art supplies are still a bit pricey compared to pearl or utrecht. the art supplies make sense when you run into buy one get one deals and they offer NO STUDENT DISCOUNT. be sure to memorize how much everything goes for (or check internet prices) before buying art supplies here because you might be paying more. example: that huge portfolio bag with a huge clipboard in it is regularly priced at 49.99 - even with a coupon its still 25 bucks. the same thing from pearl (of course it will look a bit different) is about 20 bucks without the discount. for crafting, this place beats out pearl by far - they have better felt material and the store is a bit more organized... but you know you are paying for that organization, right?! read more

Holy crap this store is big and confusing. The glue guns were in the very back corner of the store which made no sense at all. Actually, I wandered around for way too much time looking for things because it seems that the store lacks any and all organization. But anyway, they do have everything you could need for a craft project if you are willing to take the time to search. And good luck finding someone who works here to help you. I actually ended up asking a customer where she had found her glue gun after wandering around aimlessly for a while. Also, we went on a Saturday afternoon so I am sure that is a huge factor but the store was SO CROWDED. Yikes.
