We went to the Mickies Dairy Bar recently for the first time to have food, drinks and dessert and it was all nice.

Ordered take out (only my second time). Got back to worn and was given the wrong order. When I called they said "Yeah sorry we wrote the wrong thing on the slip" But they charged me for what I ordered. When I pushed back they said I could come back in for some money back (if I insisted). The difference in price between what I ordered and what I got was $8, but they would only give me $3 back since I "did get my fries." Fries were inedible, way overcooked, coke and hard. Most likely I won't return and will definitely not recommend. read more

Can't give a 5 star because of the lack of parking and long wait lines but good and nostalgia is this place's bread and butter. Parking: you will have to find and pay for street parking which can be hard being across from Camp Randall Wait: the lines are always put the door to eat here so come with time to get a table Ambiance: the place is full and waitstaff are bustling so it's definitely a happening place with tight space for moving around. Not quite an intimate setting. The place is very 1950s style which gives nostalgic feel. Food: be prepared to get large portions. I recommend sharing unless you have a big appetite. You definitely get the bang for your buck. It was good food. Different style on breakfast so it was regular tasting. It wasn't outstanding but it was good! One of the best diners I have been to! The food was amazing! I got the skillet as I heard that was the thing to get and it did not disappoint. It was HUGE and I had to take it home but it was so worth it! I also go a milkshake as it is a dairy bar and that was also phenomenal. The portions are amazing, be prepared for a take some home. Even though I gave it 5 stars there are some drawbacks. The place is cash only. It drafty when the door opens, which can be uncomfortable if you are seated by the door and its cold outside. Parking in the area sucks, and it is extremely loud when the place is busy. The atmosphere at Micky's remind me of a old school diner. Whatever apatite you come there with, you will leave satisfied with not only a full tummy but also knowing that "you got what you pay for" because the portion sizes are great! We picked up the "Scrambler" but before hand, I was advised that the portion size will feed two. Well they were not kidding. Two people can eat off the Scrambler and we still had some left over. The potatoes skins and crunchy bacon bits were fried perfectly which added depth to the dish. However, if I order again I would not add the cheddar cheese. It was too overtaking. The gravy on top added enough flavor and creaminess. We also ordered the "French Toast". I have had many of french toast meals but this has got to be one of the best. The cinnamon was not over powering and what really got me was the rolls. Unlike other meals that come with slice bread, this dish has cinnamon rolls and not the large slices of bread or Texas toast (smothered with powdered sugar). I get the nostalgia and tradition of the place but for me, basing purely on the enjoyment aspect of the food, it was not my favorite. We got the banana pecan pancakes and the institutional scrambler. The pancakes, albeit massive, were dense, overly seasoned with cinnamon, yet surprisingly lacking in other flavors. The scrambler is big enough to feed a small family, but again too much cheese and gravy to compensate for the burnt and dry potatoes, and rubbery eggs. We went here on our way back from Milwaukee on Sunday morning per a recommendation. We were amazed at the great service and were offered coffee while we waited in line outside. We had called ahead and they did not take reservations but were extremely helpful, thankful for our interest and let us know they didn't have a current wait when we were 20 minutes away. This is the old school type of diner you hope to eat at! Scratch made food. Friendly staff. The menu is all on the back wall. The pancakes usually comes with two in an order. Subtract $2 if you just want one. The server told me the pancakes were as big as the plate and about 3/4" tall. He was not kidding! So glad l ordered just one. The very center was a bit under cooked, but it was so big, there was plenty for me to eat! Bacon was perfectly cooked. My 19 yr old daughter ordered the scramble, which was a heaping order. She is only 5" tall. When the server put it on the table, he joked,"Good luck." He was not wrong in saying that! She ate 3/4 of it and said it was really good. This place also sandwiches, burgers and malts. Would love to come back for lunch sometime. They only accept cash. If you forget, they conveniently have an ATM right where you pay your bill. Mickies is a Madison classic. It's probably got the most value-for-money food in the city, with huge portion sizes of delicious food for very low prices. You get two dinner plate sized fluffy pancakes, about 3/4 an inch thick, for $6. I tried the chocolate chip one and buttermilk. The chocolate chip was still a little raw in the middle when I got it, and the server was happy to replace it. They were really nice and had the perfect quantity of chocolate in them so you don't feel like you're just consuming sugar. My favorite is the buttermilk pancakes though, with tons of butter on top! They make really amazing large omelettes too, that come with toast and potatoes as well if I remember right. You can even build your own with whatever fillings you like! You can ask for gravy too if you like. Their scramblers here are to die for. SO MUCH of the potatoes, eggs and cheese, along with a side of toast and gravy! This is definitely two meals worth, unless you've got a large enough appetite! Their shakes are decent, but not much variety here. The only flavor I can have is a chocolate peanut butter, and unfortunately it isn't on their menu. I did manage to get the server to make me one once, but they refused every other time saying a staff member had a peanut allergy. Its probably for the better though, coz I find it impossible to finish a shake and a full menu item in one go at this place! read more

Best time to go during the week, mid morning. They serve Breakfast till 3pm for late risers. Eggs - cooked perfectly to order, scrambled (fluffy and creamy), over easy (tender whites with a yummy runny yoke), and omelet - soft blanket of eggs that hugs the ingredients you choose to add...plenty of ingredients to choose from, including a hearty chili. Toast - two slices cut into diamonds - good, standard toast. Room temperature butter, so you don't shred the toast while spreading the butter - love that! Pancake - I think one pancake weighs almost 1 lb! It was good cooked thoroughly and it was moist and not overdone at all. Bacon - GOOD midwestern bacon - crispy and chewy and plenty in a side! Corned Beef Hash - there is something they do that makes it wickedly good and spicy. I normally wouldn't have shared, because I cherish my breakfast meat, but they give you a half of plate full which was about 3 lbs?? Again, perfectly cooked...some browned edges and it was moist and delicious. Most of my family got to-go containers because there was just so much food. I think my first visit to Mickies' was in 1992. Was the founder of Yelp even born yet?! We didn't have much of a wait on UW Spring Break Saturday morning. And Monroe Street was torn up for construction, so it was a task just getting there, perhaps keeping away the less than hearty trekkers. Some might call Mickies a greasy spoon, except for it's impeccably clean! It's a classic diner, and breakfast is their specialty. Go for breakfast and amuse yourself- it's worth the wait. - Banana Nut pancakes- a huge order and very yummy - Corned Beef Hash scrambler- my dining partner loved her dish! - Coffee was nice and bold, and refilled often by our server and others Service is great, and breakfast was affordable, and afforded me two meals. 2018.08.03 Friday morning Visit. The atmosphere resembles a college town atmosphere, which is appropriate since the University of Wisconsin-Madison is pretty much right next door. Lots of Bucky Badger & old school signs all over the walls. Service was pretty good. I ordered the breakfast special. Two eggs, bacon, & ham, along with Orange Juice. For a breakfast place on Friday morning in the summer, there were lots of people here. Even though I ate at the bar, My server was very good. He replaced my drink without question when said orange juice was accidentally cleared away when I went to the restroom. It is a good place to eat at, but make sure you have cash on you as they don't take credit cards. OMFYUM this place always has a wait and there's no question as to why Tbh I was a little intimidated to try for the first time, as a n00b to Madison, but upon arrival and my blank stare I was shown to a table. The menu board is on a wall in the back and there are many options but everything has 1 thing in common: HUGE. We split a bacon, spinach, cheddar scrambler (which comes with SO much gooey cheesy goodness on top of bfast potatoes) and the buttermilk pancakes ($6 for two giant, thick, fluffy bread discs). We also got coffee here which was actually super good! Anyway I was so happy to eat these monstrous portions of perfect breakfast food I nearly shed a tear.
