This is unprofessional and unacceptable, and people deserve to know how he treats customers.

The majority of people working out here are with their trainers. So this fact makes this gym feels more like a private gym that centers around the 1-to-1 experience. Their description and logos on the wall match that motif. Well, have I been surprised and pleased over the years! It's not fancy, but they do everything pretty well. I have a trainer who is the best trainer I've ever had, by leaps and bounds. (Gabe). The staff and management are very friendly, helpful, and accommodating. It's about as clean as could be. Equipment is good, well-maintained, and there's plenty of things to do, so it never feels too crowded. If you're in the market for a gym in Newport, I would recommend Fitness Factory over the poorly managed Newport Swim & Fitness (unless you need a pool).

Main reason is management is absurdly lazy. They have most showers that don't give anything except boiling hot water for many months. Some of the showers are closed. You complain months after month to the manager, every time he pretends he never heard of it. And many members who complained say the same. One of the urinals is "temporary" out of order -- for almost a year. Water comes from the ceiling in the middel of the weight room -- they have a pail to collect it for six months now. There are other problems, but main one is the manager doesn't give a shit about work, he just chit chats with the girls all day long.

I just wanted a gym that wasn't crowded and a trainer to help me learn how to start and I literally walked by Surge fitness one day, liked the vibe, and decided to sign up. I'm still there 2 years later even though I'm way more familiar with weight lifting now. The gym has a good feel, and you never have to wait for a machine or a bench. Everyone is really supportive and the environment isn't intimidating or ultra competitive, it just feels like working out with friends who push you just enough when you need it. I have a home gym also but I keep going here because I always get a harder workout and I make more progress at Surge fitness than I would alone.

One of the issues that I've encountered but never voiced was the presence of just one lat pulldown rack; it's like management read my mind and got a second one. The gym got the showers working, there's much more space, and they have maintained equipment pretty well. The water fountain broke, for example, and management fixed it in about a week. Very nice. The few issues still present aren't the management's fault IMO (namely, it getting insanely crowded in the evening; too crowded for how small the space is). I think this gym is worth checking out if you live in the area.
