I've been coming here for a few months as the vet we were seeing didn't offer surgery options and my boy needed some spots looked at and possibly removed. Both Dr. Shelley and Dr. Moon did a full body scan and presented our options and walked me through the whole process, answering my endless questions and provided amazing follow up. The surgery was scheduled quickly and successful, and Dr. Shelley spoke with me after hours when we received the results (all good thankfully!) All of the vet techs are so so so pleasant, helpful, and clearly care about the pets in their care. I had to bring my boy back in for a check today and they all remembered him and came over to say hi - I've only been coming here two and a half months! They really make you feel like your pet is their family. Comparatively, the cost for both surgery and regular visits has been very fair. Wish I could give zero stars. We recently brought in our newly rescued German Shepherd mix (45 lbs) and were seen by Dr. Alison Rhoades. The experience was unprofessional from the start. Before even entering the room, we overheard Dr. Rhoades asking a vet tech why she 'had' to see the German Shepherd, clearly expressing a personal bias or fear regarding the breed. Once she entered, she remained in the far corner of the room and didn't approach our dog instead opting to throw treats from a distance. Our dog was completely calm--no barking, growling, or aggression of any kind. To have a veterinarian act visibly frightened and dismissive of a patient based solely on breed is unacceptable. If a provider is unable to professionally handle specific breeds, they should not be seeing them. I would not recommend Dr. Rhoades to anyone, especially those with Shepherd mixes. read more

I've been coming here for a few years and have been completely satisfied with the care my pets have received, but am writing this review because of the experience I had when that horrible, inevitable time came for me to euthanize my elderly dog. I was a mess, already crying before the test results came back that her near-immobility was from cancer in her bones. The doctor was so compassionate in explaining what was happening, and what my options were, and what was recommended. There was so much kindness and compassion in handling this situation. My dog got a very gentle goodbye, and the decorum of this office to not press me as I was leaving about billing or invoices for services rendered - it was something I was too wrecked to notice at the time, but appreciated all the more when I realized later. This veterinary practice is a business, of course, but I do genuinely feel that they care about what they're doing. They've been consistently professional and competent in seeing to the health needs of my pets, and have really made an impression on me with their overall attitude to providing care. read more

Wish I could give no stars. I asked for a simple rabies shot to be administered to my dog. My Shih Tzu was given shots I never requested racking up a $170 bill. The staff was extremely rude and disrespectful when asked why additional shots were given when the appointment was specifically for a rabies shot. The girl at the front desk replied stating that "my husband shouldn't have let them do it". Let's be clear, she was yelling at me and arguing basically blaming me. I used to really like this place but I will NEVER return! This happened a year or so ago however I thought it was important that I finally take a moment and state what my experience was here. If you take your animal here be sure that they are doing exactly what you actually asked for so that you aren't paying more than you expected. read more

This clinic is all about the money. The first time I called the office and asked for an appointment to get the influenza vaccine. I take time off work; I get there to be told that they are out of the vaccine. I get charged for an office visit. When I questioned them, they said they never know when they would be out and that the people booking appointments do not know about supply or lack of. However, someone at the front desk told me they had been out of it for 3 months when I was paying the bill for the visit. They absolutely knew when they boked my appointment that they were out of it but had me come anyway. The veterinarian says I am sorry, etc.etc, and I chose to give them the benefit of the doubt. Fast forward, 2 weeks later my dog is sick with diarrhea. I get prescribed the same metronidazole repeatedly over three visits by three different veterinarians for well over 30 days while my dog continues to be sick. Then I read that 50% of dogs show a reaction to the medicine and the side effect is diarrhea and sometimes fatal neurotoxicity!! One would think they would realize they the medicine is not working and prescribe something else. They also had me buy 120-150 dollars' worth of supposedly gut-friendly food that made him sicker. Charged me for a urine analysis but failed to let me know to bring a sample until after for 4-5 days when I called to speak to the vet and challenged their prescriptions. She says we were unable to collect a urine sample, so bring one. An afterthought that might have never been communicated to me but for the fact that I called them. The motivation is money and charging overinflated prices for prescriptions. Metronidazole can cause toxic reactions in dogs, one that was never conveyed to me. If you buy your prescriptions from the pharmacy they come with printed caution. Rude front office receptionists, and careless veterinarians who focus on money. Not worth the angst or a sick dog. read more

All I can say is terrible !!! If I could rate this clinic a zero I would!!! From the front desk woman to the vet... unprofessional, disrespectful, and lacking any care for animals! Called regarding a refill on a prescription for my dog and was told you will have to call around to see what pharmacy has your dog's prescription. Wow!!! When I called to inform my vet my dog had a seizure and wanted to go ahead and start on anti- seizure medication I was told.. she's not here today so call back on Monday,??? Really?? That was another 2 days away .. I asked can the vet that's there now call in the prescription I was told no. Hmm?? After my dog had an additional 4 seizures one night we called and I asked if we could start an extended release since the twice a day wasn't holding her .. after waiting almost a full day they called me and said yes. Also, I called to ask if the vet could call in her prescription before she left for the day so I could pick it up that evening and was told yes and we will call you when we do.. guess what ? Surprise surprise they did not! If you care about your pet stay clear of this clinic. I also asked to speak to the office manager. I was told we never know when she will be in the office; therefore, I left my information for her to call me back.. you guessed it.. she never did. Also told like one of the other bad reviews if she has any other seizures to go to the emergency vet. So very sad !! read more

We've been patients here for a decade with two dogs. Today, as we were preparing to leave the house to induce my pregnant wife, our dog came inside whimpering. I called to see if we could drop her off on our way to the hospital and left a voice message. They called back and said the earliest they could squeeze us in was at 10 AM and they recommended other places for us to go. The human response was the only response - "of course you can bring her in - we hope labor and delivery goes well - we have your dog and family covered." Disappointing. Will be finding a new vet. read more

Not sure whether to give 3 or 4 stars. This practice was a bit more pricey than what I was used to, but I was pleased overall while I took my cats there. The only issue I had was when one of my cats was not well and the vet insisted I needed to wait for the medicine to work. I know my cat. She was with me for almost 18 yrs. I finally decided to ignore the vet and took my cat for a visit. Guess what? She had cancer AND had to put her down that day. I was very, very disappointed in the 'expert.' read more

I have been a client of Midlothian Animal Clinic since 1997, through three generations of pets. They have coached me through bottle-feeding kittens, counseled me through serious illnesses, and given me all the time I needed when making those final decisions. They love my furballs, and when I call, they know who I am as soon as I mention whichever of my current batch of 5 that I name. Yes, they are expensive. They also have multiple vets, vet-techs, and other workers as permanent onsite staff. Add to that, they are one of the few AAHA-accredited vets in the area. This is one of those cases where I really feel that you get what you pay for. It's the difference between having a regular physician that knows you and is willing to sit and listen to what's wrong and going to a "doc-in-a-box." You get decent care from the generic facility, but your primary care physician really knows your history, your idiosyncrasies, and your needs. The MAC vets get to know your pets, remember them, and recognize immediately when one of them "really just isn't herself at all today." And yes, that last is a direct quote said to me the last time I took my 16-year-old dog in as an emergency "drop off and squeeze her in when you have time" visit. read more

We started taking our dog and then our cat here last year. With an older dog 12.5 yo Lhasa) requiring dental cleanings and additional growth removals, and injuries, then have been great. Earlier this our dog hurt his shoulder Friday night and when it was still bothering him Saturday, I called and we got in that morning. Today, we were getting ready to go somewhere and our dog hurt his back leg and was falling and unable to walk normally. I called 30 minutes before they closed and told them we could be there in five minutes and we went in and the staff and Dr. Withers helped us out. Dr. Whither figured out he was having vestibular issues causing his balance to be off. They were able to give our dog medications he needed and we were able to get his prescriptions so he will be feeling better and on the way to recovery now. I love the vets and staff here and highly recommend them to any dog and cat owners like us. read more

Our 10 year old dog started to choke and have erratic breathing. We have gone to this vet for 30 YEARS and called 45 minutes prior to close to ask if they could take a look at him. We were quickly informed that they were seeing their last appointment and we should go see the emergency vet. 30 YEARS! We were 5 minutes from their office. We have overlooked the overcharging and rudeness from the front desk staff because the vets have been great This is the last straw. You had the time. You just didn't do it. We booked a Christmas vacation that came in at 1:30am Christmas Day. We understand that the Clinic would be closed Christmas. We called at least 4-5 times to ask if we could pick up Mia' the 26th. For some reason they would not let us do that. Why would I have to pay money for the 26th? I understand giving off Christmas Eve. My husband and son work the 26th. Why can't we pick up our dog? I would hope our baby has some care these days. I am home and missing our Mia' ...wanting to pick her up to be rejected. My baby is sitting in a cage. read more

Our family has been dealing with Midlothian Animal Clinic for over 10 years and couldn't imagine going anywhere else. Getting into see any of the vets is never a hassle or wait. This Christmas when my chocolate lab decided to actually get into some chocolate-- Nestle's vet was not only helpful and supportive, but told us what to look for, what we could expect, answered ALL of our questions and even followed up to check on her multiple times throughout the week. As a pharmacist in the area I've also dealt with them professionally. They're not only easily accessible but they're one of the VERY few offices that always pleasantly respond the same day to whatever the request is for one of their clients. It's very comforting to have their support and I would highly recommend them to anyone whether you're just starting out with a newly adopted pet or even if you're contemplating a change- this office sets the standard for an exceptional quality of care that I can't imagine finding anywhere else. read more

When I arrived the receptionist asked if I had brought her shot records since we were new patients, I explained to her that when I scheduled the appointment I was told someone would contact her previous vet to get those records and she just asked, "really?" seconds later, pulling my dogs record from the last vet. I really didn't appreciate her doubting the fact that one of their workers reassured me that it wasn't a problem that I had misplaced my copy of her vaccinations. We were charged $21.40 for my dogs nails to be trimmed and they cut her quick on two nails, so when she returned to the room she had bloody feet; which no one commented on at all, felt a little shady. Her previous vet trimmed her nails for free, and the groomer doesn't even charge $20 for nail trimmings. The whole experience left a bad taste for us, so we won't be returning despite the fact it's five minutes from our house. I'd rather drive 30 minutes to her previous vet for nicer service and no bloody paws! read more

The staff goes above and beyond for our pets. It's difficult and scary when you have a hurt animal but the staff does their best to ease concern and offer suggestions and alternatives. We have found over the years that the focus of MAC is less on care and more on the bottom line. The charges for care are EXTRAORDINARILY HIGH. I have been bringing my two cats to Midlothian Animal Clinic for several years. Both were getting up in the years. One started having some behavior changes at home and I saw a difference in his coat and mannerisms. Dr. Shaughessy seemed to think it was stress related because there was an additional cat in the house. I requested both cats have blood work done to check for problems, I thought my guy might have a thyroid issue. Blood work was done and she said she did not see anything wrong. Each month my cat would lose weight and seemed to be wasting. When I called in again, I requested a different Vet to examine him. She immediately found a huge mass in his chest so we did xrays. By the time we figured out that it was cancer, it was too late for him. I had to say "Goodbye" to my companion of 10 years. This process of telling her something was wrong went on for over 6 months. Words can't say how I feel over the lose of my buddy. I will never go to this practice again. I did, however send my blood results to two other practices, whom both confirmed that there were definitely abnormalities and further testing should have been done. read more
