My 10-month old cat suddenly became very ill and needed emergency surgery. I was referred to Animal Medical Center and my kitty was cared for by Dr Rea. From the moment I stepped into their office I was treated with kindness, care and respect. Not only was I kept informed about what was happening medically, i was also given details information about the fees. I have now registered my other two cats as patients of Dr Rea and will be using this office as their primary veterinarian. Cannot give enough praise to Dr Rea, the vet techs and front desk staff. Both cats needed their vaccinations updated. I missed my first appointment trying to capture both of them. I was an hour late for the first appointment and two hours early for the second appointment. The vet Catlin Keese DMV decided to take both and all went well. Very customer friendly front-end staff. Both the vet Catlin Keese and Lauren the vet Tech provided the information and explanation to my questions in an understandable manner. Very professional operation and very humane in their treatment of Bighead and Fuzzy. I've used this office over the past 20 years. The emergency care is top notch, and the normal visits are on par or above with any of the vets I've used while living in Virginia. I recommend them to anyone in the Midlothian area. * I don't give 5-star ratings for any service or product. read more

This is a very scary practice with very scary Vets. Since we have left, my dog has had two successful surgeries and yet the Vet(s) at this clinic almost put my dog to death. I was told that the Vet doing the surgery was actually getting ready for her wedding that weekend which is kind of crazy, because of course she wasn't paying attention. My recommendation is that unless you need a simple band aid, I would not take any animal to this Vet clinic. read more

Worst experience of my life. I took my 8 yr old lab there Saturday because my regular vet Powhatan Animal Hospital couldn't see him and recommended that I take him there. He was lethargic which was just noticed that day. They took him back while I waited in the waiting room. Two hours later they call me to a room and proceeded to tell me that he had fluid around his heart, that they didn't know what could have caused it, that he would need it drained and that I should consider euthenasia. Well I was in shock and said well we don't even know what's going on with him and that I wanted to try and save him so asked them to do the "tap" to drain the fluid. Well 2 hours later after watching these wings light up in the waiting room twice for pets that had been put down and seeing two distraught families have to walk through the waiting room and go out the front door, wondering if my dog was next in line, I was pulled back into a room and told they didn't do the "tap" and that he was declining so they suggested that I take him to Partner's 24hr Vet ER and they would send them his lab, xray results. I was upset that they didn't do the tap. I really think they didn't because they were busy and were starting to turn emergencies away toward the end of the day and were getting ready to close . Within 15 minutes of me getting my dog to Partners, the vet spoke to me briefly explaining the causes and wouldn't be able to deduce any more until he examined the fluid contents then did the tap. My dog's blood pressure and heart rate immediately improved and he perked up. Unfortunately the fluid was blood and after 24hrs of trying to treat him, he wasn't improving. It was more evident that the cause was most probably hemangiosarcoma which I then learned was common in labs. The staff was great and actually seemed to care. They were so good with him. After it was evident he wasn't going to improve, I did ask that he be put down. They never pressured me to make the decision like the Animal Medical Center vet did. If you want a nightmare of an experience, take your pet to the Animal Medical Centert. You know they even bribe you to give them a 5 star rating by offering a $25 discount with your next visit. My dog suffered unnecessarily for 4 hours because they failed to emergently remove the fluid around his heart which is a procedure the vet says "we do it all the time". That place should be shut down because all they do is try to rush you into putting your pet down, making a quick buck and closing on time. read more

This was the TOUGHEST of days as we had to put Bella to rest. At the start of the visit we were just bringing her in for a bladder problem, and Dr. Blake Spiers did a diagnosis and explained some common surgery she should have. He was VERY patient and empathetic. He said he wanted to do her blood work and run an ultrasound. This uncovered a tumor in her liver and a blood panel that had nothing good on it. Dr. Spiers and every nurse and every staff member made sure they cared for her AND me as the process went on. They calmly told me how the process would go and what options I had. I was given all the time I needed to be with her, and I held her in my arms as she left. Someday I will have another pup, and AMC will be my go-to for all of their care. DO NOT take your pets to Animal Medical Center in Midlothian! When we got up Saturday we found our cat in his litter box with his tongue hanging out, breathing, but not responsive. We don't have ER vet care near us, so a Google search for places with decent reviews and a few phone calls later, this is where we took him. They checked vitals, catheter to check urine (not officially bc it was not on paperwork), and charged us $460 to run blood panel. Based on the blood panel, no other tests, and his physical condition they diagnosed him with neurological feline FIP due to Covid. Keep in mind we have had him since March and he has had no other exposure, no symptoms at all until Saturday, and was on antibiotics when he left the rescue as a precaution because he and some of the other cats had started sneezing (again, this was March and he was used to a steady climate in Kuwait with no prior exposure to VA seasons/allergies). Their "treatment" was $3k deposit, $12-20k for antiviral at a facility they had to transfer him to and he would undoubtedly have to be there for 84 days (that's the length of the antiviral medication treatment). Their prognosis was without this treatment he would not make it and they would recommend "putting him down". We also asked about a prescription for the tablet form, which can be purchased from a reputable pharmacy online at a much more affordable price in comparison and they refused. We took him home and contacted the rescue owner, who happens to have friends funding feline FIP research and she asked them to take a look at the bloodwork. Their feedback was it could be FIP, bloodwork is borderline, but it could also be an obstruction, enlarged kidneys, something else. She coached us on getting him through the weekend and recommended taking him to our normal vet Monday morning. We gave him small amounts of pedialyte through a medicine dropper and started him on azithromycin that we had leftover from when we brought him home. By Sunday night, he had at least eaten some of his wet food. Monday morning we were at our vet when they opened. By contrast, we took him to our local vet who took him back immediately after taking our information and gathering some details about what was going on with no appointment and not having been seen there (we do take our other pets there). Called that evening with an update about our "baby" that he was doing okay, but wanted to keep him for observation and to make sure he was responding to treatment. We got a call at 2:30pm Tuesday - come get him! He's doing well, was mewing loudly at them when they walked in the door that morning and was back to his normal self. They aren't 100% sure exactly what is going on, but could be sinusitis or hairball stuck. Gave us some meds to continue treatment at home and y'all...they charged me a whopping total of $162 for saving his life! I almost cried!! If we had kept him with this place, with antiviral, it likely would have killed him because it wasn't what he needed, not to mention who has an extra $20k lying around?! Either way, they advised WE KILL OUR CAT. Unacceptable. I have since learned there are test they could've run. They could've done imaging. They could've done much more before making that determination and sentencing him to death. He is home recovering, currently taking up residence on my bed, where he belongs. read more

I have been taking my dogs here for 14+ years and have seen this practice go thru a lot of ups and downs. Dr. Nay was the world's best vet and after he retired the place went down in flames bad. As Covid was at its height they struggled to keep doctors and staff, but the ray of light is Dr. Morgan Rea. She is the reason I continued to go here and see it thru - even with all the challenges they were facing. I was just there today for a checkup as my dog has terminal liver cancer and Rea is helping us through. Cannot say enough good things about her and all the other staff, especially Megan at the front desk who knows me and my dog, even when I call on the phone. Amazing animal hospital our sweet husky pup Panda got into something and went into anaphylactic shock. The vet doctor ran out and grabbed him as soon as we got there and stabilized him immediately. I felt the staff was friendly and was grateful to have been seen within an hour of calling. I have used Animal Medical Center for emergencies in the past and they did a great job. I'm only giving 3 stars today because they did not give me enough medicine to last for the week they had prescribed for and when I called to see if I needed more, they were very defensive .. when I just wanted more medicine to treat my kittens. They killed my sister's cat. Not kidding. His death could have been absolutely avoided, but the people she trusted to care for him (the primary vet on call) was completely negligent to treat his follow up symptoms after a surgery they performed a week prior. There are two operations at this one location. The regular practice Monday - Friday 8am - 6pm and Saturday 8Am- 12. The ER is open all other times to serve critical patients. I have been very impressed with the practice. Dr. Marc Nay has been my vet for 20 years and I can't say enough good things about him. He has always treated my animals with respect and has provided guidance that didn't always benefit him financially. Nine years ago my best friend was in the early stages of kidney failure and he said we can do the following things to help her, but all its going to do is buy you some time. In the end, she won't make it because she needs new kidneys and we wont be able to do that. I asked what I should do. He said with heavy eyes that animals unlike people don't have to suffer. It is your choice and I will do what you think is best. I really appreciate the honesty of this staff and the care they provide my four legged kids. My new best buddy saw the ER vet today. He is 10 and I love him to death, didn't know what was wrong he was just yelping. I thought the worst and told them that they had the full power to do whatever tests needed to figure it out. They could Have taken advantage, because I was obviously not concerned about money, but the vet took the time and was able to diagnose a slipped disc in his neck. He didn't get subjected to tons if unnecessary testing even though I had already said X-ray him, do wherever you need. I am thankful they did their job. Now about the wait.... I don't mind, because I see the critical patients come in, the ones who have been hit by cars or worse. So I'm ok with waiting because if my dog was hit by a car, I would expect someone with a stable animal be supportive. So I will wait because I believe the staff is working as hard as they can to do the right thing for the animals in their care. read more

I have been to several vets in Richmond over the years and these folkes are the best on the Southside that I have personally experienced for sure. Our family has a pretty long list of dogs and cats that they have treated for us since '06. The doctors and techs both are very thoughtful and careful with my furry family. Had I been on Yelp last year I probably would've had a great two page review in how they treated my 17-year-old cat who was very ill. Oliver was sick for months and we were here on and off for at least 6 months to try and keep our oldest furry child alive. As unfortunate as it was, when the time came for Oliver to finally pass they couldn't have been more thoughtful and respectful of our family's needs. It's been a year now since, we have two new furry cat children, and they still remember Oliver. This is a great practice here, I highly recommend them to anyone. read more

We chose this location to bring our English Bulldog to since it was so close to our home. He was having difficulty breathing. We called them when we were on our way so they could be prepared by the time we got there. Once we got there, we had to wait about five minutes for them to tend to him. They kept him for two hours to monitor him after giving him a steroid shot. We called to check on him and they said his breathing was better. We requested antibiotics as this has happened to him before due to him being sick. We felt like antibiotics wouldn't hurt him. The vet refused to give antibiotics and prescribed medication to mellow him out. When we picked him up, his breathing was a lot worse. We ended up taking him to another animal hospital where they further ran tests and kept him overnight for monitoring. read more

Happy this place was open 24 hours. Took good care of our dog before he passed. Horrible, horrible communication. Told us our dog had a surgical consult - he did not. Then later told us there was a surgeon waiting in Manakin-Sabot for us, so we drove 40 mins and no surgeon waiting. We actually incurred a lot of extra vet fees because of the miscommunication on their part. Honestly, wish we would have been able to see our regular vet. read more

Where do I start? I recently took my puppy there "as an emergency" because he might have ingested some chemicals. Long story short he was lethargic and very dehydrated. Keep In mind that whatever he ingested is killing him and fast. As soon as we got to the front desk they were very nice but that's where the good ends. It took over an hour to see the vet while I watched my puppy dying with no one to help because the vet was treating another case. I asked the lady that was taking care of us (not a vet) why they wouldn't put an iv on him since he was clearly dehydrated and dying fast. She said she couldn't do anything until he was seen by the vet. Finally the vet comes in.... and tells us that he's very sick and she doesn't know if he will make it. So basically she said that treatment could be very expensive and made us feel like all they cared about was the money. She was very cocky as well. They wouldn't treat him until we signed the paperwork and let me tell you they charge for everything! I hope am wrong but I felt that the vet only cared about getting paid and not so much about saving my puppy. I understand that everything cost money but there was very little to no sense of humanity in the way she spoke to us. I paid over $1500 only to have him euthanized 24 hrs later. I wouldn't have mind paying more but I felt like my puppy wasn't a priority and the end result was going to be the same. Two days later I went in to pay off the balance and to tell the ladies at the front desk how I felt seeing my puppy dying in front of my eyes and nobody was good enough to even put him on iv. Maybe the iv wouldn't have made a difference but at least I could have seen their effort and love for their profession. I was very disappointed. Maybe to them they're just animals that can be easily replaced but to us they are our family. They are no less that a son or a best friend. I do hope they take my advice and make some changes and maybe even change vets. But I will never go there again. read more

Terrible place, only want you for your money. Took my dog here a few months back. He had major diarrhea and vomiting. They seemed helpful and I waited a few hours and a few test later to tell me he has HGE but not as severe. Now I'm having the same issue, and all I would like to do is refill his prescription for something they told me last time that "just happens." Sadly they want more "test." Which of course is more money out of my pocket. With their high prices I can't afford more test. Not to mention they overly price their medications. I would NOT recommend this place to anybody. On a Saturday morning during a routine walk on a near by trail, my small dog was attacked and severely injured by another larger dog. Immediately after the event took place I called the local Chester, VA vets who were listed falsely that they provided emergency care online. After calling 3-4 different businesses with no luck I finally came across this location who did not bawk at the fact that I needed emergency care for my pet (as the other locations did), were extremely kind and took him immediately to administer pain medication for his injuries. Shortly after I was taken to a room where the vet explained things-what condition he was in, what they needed to do and what she predicted the outcome to be. About an hour and a half later my dog was released and I was given a full write up of what his needs were and how to take care of him while he healed. The tech was happy to explain and sensed that we were pretty upset by the recent incident so she added in some humor to the matter (in a very tasteful way) to help ease our tension. The woman at the front desk was very pleasant and also aware of our state so she too made small gestures to ease our emotions. I am extremely grateful for their quick action and care and would highly recommend calling them first when it comes to an emergency with your pet in this area- they were very busy but still accommodating and detail oriented. read more

The staff never disclosed their price difference between an appointment & calling to schedule a specific time to bring in the animal. They just assume you are aware the office visit doubles in price, when you call & tell them this is a non emergency & when can I bring in my animal. They give you a time & you show up, that's an appointment. But they still scam & charge you for an emergency visit. Not to mention they raised the premium to $100.00. Our vet Cathy Blanchong is very eloquent appeared very logical and level headed. She has explained our options of treatment at the time very well and with very few filler words. Direct and easy to understand. Side note: They are expensive. After receiving our service though, we left in the same state as we were (with our pet) when we came in. With very little extra knowledge on the situation and a vague idea of what was going on. We were given options before treatments, and discussed the reasons for them. I did not like that your animal is removed from your presence during the visit, which left me on edge about her safety and care. I'm fairly distressed about having spent so much here and leaving without answers, on calling the following day to see if I could get any continued care at a combined rate from the night before, (a girl can hope) they offered no consolation or help and expected the exact same amount as the night previous, which did not strike me as a good business model, or a vet I could continue to go to and spend money at. The office area is nice, bright, and clean, the front desk staff is helpful and cheerful. They also are part of K9s for soldiers, ptsd helper dogs that you can donate to through them. read more

Brought my dog here because she has a bladder infection, explained that to the receptionist and she says OK it is going to be $80 extra for the emergency. I explained that it is not an emergency, that it is a simple bladder infection. Her response was, "well is is not a normal visit, and I have to click that button and when I do it is an extra $80. And if you don't like it you can somewhere else." That was my second very poor experience here, so I took her advice and went elsewhere. Very pleased with the compassionate knowledgable staff. Our dog needed stitches after running into a parked trailer newly parked in the back yard. He barely missed his eye and had 3 significant cuts. Several stitches and staples with anesthesia. I watched the staff interact with other families and was thrilled with their communication and caring attitude. The physician Dr Jones was very professional and thorough, the vet techs were so kind and thank goodness for Melody the receptionist! I'm a nurse and very particular... Three hours sitting in the car to be told UTI at hour two l, which by the way they asked if I wanted urine test run after I repeatedly told them she is squatting to pee over and over with nothing come of out and I suspect a UTI. Then told "ok we will discharge and get you meds." Hour three still here waiting in truck. Never have I spent more than 30 minutes at a vet for really any reason other than major. This place is horrible. And the person answering phones could not speak in a more lazy tone. Not sure what the issue is as you can't get a good feel sitting in the car. But whatever the reason this is ridiculous. Will not be coming here again. My senior dog was having some GI issues and I drove 30 minutes out of my way to take her to Animal Medical Center because the reviews were better than emergency vets closer to me. The staff was friendly during my visit, as was the doctor I saw that day. And while she got my sweet girl what she needed to start feeling better (including a prescription for a prescription diet), that is where the good stuff ends. It's what happened after that point that earned this place a one-star rating. I went to fill the prescription on Chewy. When Chewy called the vet to confirm - THEY DENIED THE PRESCRIPTION!! I stepped out of a meeting to call them to find out why they would write a prescription and then not approve it. I was put on hold for 10 minutes (missed the rest of my meeting), and then I was told that there was a misunderstanding and they would fill it after all. This was eating at me, and after wasting 30 unnecessary minutes because of their confusion, I called back to get the name of the doctor who denied the prescription in the first place. I am rather picky when it comes to my pet's care (hence driving so far out of my way), and wanted to make sure I didn't see this vet who's gut reaction is to just deny prescriptions that were legitimately issues for a sick dog. I called and asked - what is the name of the doctor who denied my pet's prescription? The front desk girl said she didn't know. I said, "it was the one you just talked to in order to get the prescription filled". Instead of answering me, she put me on hold and five minutes later, a vet tech picked up. The vet tech also does not know the name of the doctor on duty. Then I ended up talking to an office manager who said she knew the name of the doctor, but she would refuse to give it to me - basically preventing me from making health decisions about my dog and who tends to her. She told me I should have taken my prescription to a store (now the "miscommunication" that this office manager also denied is my fault because I used my normal pharmacy). I wasted another 30 minutes asking three different staff members for a doctor's name. Two didn't know the doctor's name and one was just rude and hung up on me when I demanded that she tell me who is making decisions about my pet's health. So what I gather from this experience, regardless of what happened on the day of the visit is that: 1. This staff does NOT communicate well AT ALL. You don't want miscommunications about your pet's health, do you? I sure don't! 2. The staff is grossly unaccountable for the choices they make. No one ever even APOLOGIZED for making the mistake and taking an hour of my time unnecessarily. And when they realized it was their mistake, no one could own it enough to get to an apology. I was made to feel like I had made the mistake by the vendor I chose to fill my prescription. Really? Does Chewy know you have a problem with them? 3. There is a narcissism problem in the office. The office manager literally said, "I am not going to give you the name of MY doctor." Her doctor? Well, she was my dog's doctor just a moment ago when she denied my pet's prescription! I firmly believe that I have every right to know the names of anyone making decisions about my pets. I paid for that right when you handed me a bill for $300. read more

Front staff at this animal clinic failed to update our dog's record, who was just diagnosed with cancer. When we called to speak to the doctor regarding the test results and treatment options, they stated he was not in the building, but the vet actually was there. When we asked the office staff if he could call us, they were extremely rude and discounted the severity of our dog's condition. They were not apologetic, instead they were extremely rude and hurtful towards us. This lack of customer service and patient care is unacceptable. read more

I will be forever grateful to the staff and Dr Myers for saving my pups life last night. My Great Dane Zeus Had stomach torsion and was rushed to the animal medical center last night.... everybody was very attentive and acted quickly to save his life. He made it through emergency surgery and has been looked after. They made it easy to figure out payment and explained everything. Dr Myers is a God send.... explained details step by step and kept us updated. Being a nurse I've called several times to check in and everyone has been helpful and understanding. Only giving 1 star because it doesn't go into the negative. After charging us $500 to do bloodwork, and an exam, give our sick cat fluids under the skin and some meds, they sent us home with a shrug because we couldn't afford the $500 extra they wanted for an ultrasound. We took our cat to a different vet 3 days later and they found a mass the size of a walnut on a SMALL cat (3kg) on her leg. AMC completely missed this. I live with the guilt that I trusted them and our cat had to suffer an additional 3 days in pain before the other vet found the mass, 2 inflamed lymph nodes that were completely missed. Also - The other vet charged us about $500, but that included EVERYTHING AMC DID, PLUS the ultrasound PLUS sending the slides of the fluid from the mass to the pathologists. DO NOT GO HERE IF YOUR ANIMAL IS SICK. They might be good for stitching up wounds, but they are TERRIBLE diagnosticians. I posted in a FB group for the neighborhood I live in (near AMC) and got SIXTEEN other "They screwed up the diagnosis so badly" comments. Apparently once a previous vet left- this place has gone DOWNHILL, FAST. AVOID. read more

We were called into one of the rooms by a medical technician to explain the overnight process. Then we waited 2 hours for the Vet to come out and say our dog was seen and the vitals were stable. After-hours, the place seems to operate like a real ER and unless your pet is there for a true emergency, there is a chance you will fall to the bottom of the queue. The staff, from reception to technician to Vet, were all friendly and professional. The Vet seemed very knowledgeable. I like this place. I took my pug there because she had almost 100 small and some bigger bladder stones. The staff was very accommodating to us. The doctor explained everything to us before her surgery and after. Also we loved the doctors. They were very nice. I recommend this place to anybody who has a pet who is ill. read more

This has been to best experience I've had. The staffing was completely supportive. They was very friendly and understanding. Also taking their time to take care of my animals. Even after the visit they called to check in on my pets to make sure they were doing well and if we needed anything. I wanna say thank you!
