Once a Reliable Clinic--Now Deeply Disappointing I've been taking my pets to Winterfield for well over a decade--likely since around 2008, when I first adopted my dog. For many years, I was satisfied with the care they provided. But recently, the level of service and professionalism has sharply declined. I'm left wondering what changed. Over the years, I've trusted them with a wide variety of animals--dogs, cats, sugar gliders, ferrets. I even once asked if they could see my Serama chickens, only to be laughed at over the phone. I'm not sure who they think is eating Seramas, but many people keep chickens as pets. For a veterinary clinic, that response was surprisingly dismissive. I expected more understanding and respect from professionals in animal care. I overlooked several concerning incidents in the past, but the growing pattern of questionable practices has become hard to ignore. A few examples: I was charged nearly $300 for a single antibiotic shot--without any prior disclosure. A simple heads-up would've been appreciated. I received a $20 bill for trimming a cat's rear fur--something that took five seconds and seemed more like a gesture of kindness than a billable service. A sugar glider died following a hernia repair. Basic supplies like needles, tubing, and saline were marked up 10-20 times their cost. I've repeatedly been upsold on tests that provided no real value to my pets' health. In my experience, unless a treatment involves something direct and tangible --like antibiotics or fluids--it rarely seems to make much of a difference. Once your pet is placed on a medication regimen, it feels like you're trapped in a cycle of ongoing costs, with little flexibility or empathy. I even took in a 19-year-old stray cat I found dying in the street--an act that came with significant financial responsibility. When I had to delay a follow-up due to a temporary lack of funds as I told them, I was charged a $20 no-show fee. It wasn't the cost that bothered me, but the lack of grace--especially after years of loyalty and thousands of dollars spent. I had also referred my father, who spent around $1,000, and I paid another $3,000 toward that same rescued cat--every cent paid in full. What stung most was the cold, scripted response. "Heather" speaks of "supporting you and your pet," over and over yet they refuse to release medical records until a measly $20 fee was paid, or tide your meds over for a few weeks. No exception. No empathy. No sense of loyalty. You'd think a long-time client in good standing might be offered a little understanding--maybe even a courtesy bag of fluids to tide the cat over, or a simple "don't worry about the fee this time." Instead, it was rigid policy over people, and cash over compassion. Winterfield may still be acceptable for routine visits. But if you're looking for transparency, understanding, or basic respect for your loyalty, I'd recommend going elsewhere. To them, your pet is a profit center. And when the money slows down, their compassion disappears, regardless of how long you've been with them. read more

Do not trust Dr Sara White. She removed 14 teeth, without consent, from 14yo dog. Paperwork signed for a teeth cleaning predicted up to 3 teeth be removed. Paperwork indicated Doc was to discuss with us any complications that occurred during procedure. She did not contact us, but proceeded to remove more than 1/3 of my dog's teeth, without consent. read more

Meet Sam, he was a small kitten that was in the parking lot of a restaurant which also happens to be in the same parking lot where Winterfield vet hospital is, my husband and I were coming out of the restaurant and saw this little guy and couldn't get to him before he ran off. Two days later we took one of our other for pets in for her annual check up and mentioned the little guy that we saw in the parking lot. Dr. White said "oh, we have him, we got him before the cold rain set in. He's been neutered has shots and he's in the back if you want to meet him." The rest is history. We now have a new addition to our menagerie of fur babies. What I'm trying to say is they love our pets as much as we love our pets, and that's the kind of veterinary you want in your Rolodex. read more

I would NOT recommend this veterinary office. My dogs have been patients for almost a decade. Most recently, my Frenchie was recommended for a surgery that was not needed. I had been assured surgery was absolutely crucial and encouraged to cut my vacation short to bring her home for it. My dog was cut open for what turned out to be an unnecessary surgery and ultimately resulted in no real diagnosis. The doctor tried to backtrack and say the surgery was "exploratory"; however, that had NEVER been communicated to me. Then, to top it off, the Office Manager, Lindsey Brown, called me to discuss the bill and was rude, disrespectful and completely unprofessional. I moved my dogs to a different local practice. read more

I would give 10 stars if I could. We have taken our labradoodle to these wonderful people for 14 years. He was so loved and cared for by everyone from the front desk, the groomers (LOVE Gayla!!!), the Vet Techs (esp Hillary and Lydia) and the vets (esp Dr. White and Dr Willis)!! They are all so patient and take the time to listen and offer their expertise with compassion. Their Jobs are not easy a lot of days and often they are met with emotional pet family members who take out their fears and frustrations on them. I have witnessed how much they care very much for each animal that comes through the door and strive to give the very best care they can. I would highly recommend them!!! read more

I've been taking my dogs to various vets for the last 30 years. From the moment I found Winterfield Veterinary Hospital, it became my favorite one. The veterinarians and their assistants are kind, knowledgeable, and helpful. I trust them. I feel so fortunate to have such a wonderful place to take my pup. I used to drive quite a ways to reach them, and they were always worth the trip. I'm fortunate now that I live much closer. My dog is beautifully groomed each month. She has her teeth cleaned, and she receives all of her veterinary care at Winterfield. I feel respected by the staff. They listen to me and respond to our needs. I'm just so grateful to have found them and recommend Winterfield Veterinary Hospital to everyone I meet. read more

I was really hoping for a great experience but sadly it was far from it. I scheduled a morning drop off for a procedure that required anesthesia. I picked my 75 lb dog up after work as scheduled only to find that he was completely soaked in urine. He was left in a kennel for far too long laying in his own urine. He was given IV fluids during his stay and they should have known he'd have needed to relieve himself multiple times throughout the day. They gave a standard apology and told me an office manager would be in touch. No one ever called. Not even to follow up to see how he was doing. I also completed their automated email survey, which was a waste of time as that didn't get a response either. This place is in it for the money, that's it. read more

I've been to several vets who supposedly specialize in exotics and avian medicine. I spent over $2000 on my Amazon parrot and 3 vets could not get results. I made an appointment with Winterfield after I found April Rice's name on an avian forum. She was very good with Taylor and knowledgeable about the sinus and air sac problem he was having. She really impressed me as someone who knew about avian medicine. She took her time and explained several options for treatment. Taylor is making an improvement on the medicine and she wants a follow up in one month. Most other vets want to follow up every week or two because parrots generate a lot of revenue for their business. If April Rice gets Taylor healthy, I plan on giving her 4 more patients - I have 3 Amazon and 2 African Gray parrots. The charges were very reasonable compared to what most vets charge for birds. read more

We wouldn't have brought our puppy here if we hadn't been required to by the Houlagans Rest adoption agency. They had contracted with these quacks to spay the puppy we rescued, so we reluctantly drove out to the boonies for the service. Our puppy came back from the operation with a breathing problem. I figured, "no problem, she just woke up from surgery." Well, after a few days of her nose still being congested I called them up to ask about it and was told that it was my problem, not theirs. I explained that she had not had any issues before the operation and they were unsympathetic. Not to mention they also removed her front dewclaws during the operation, but wrapped her front paws so tightly that they swole up to twice the normal size. My friendly neighborhood vet was happy to help when I took her in. The upshot? Two years later our sweet dog has trouble breathing, Winferfield caused it, Winterfield won't fix it, and we've been quoted $5,000.00 from a reputable vet to diagnose and doc the problem. Don't bring your dog (or cat, or fish, or hamster) here. read more

Dr. Willis did both of our dog's knee surgeries. We actually switched practices after the first surgery because we were so impressed with his expertise and his genuinely kind nature. The entire staff has this same kind and caring quality and it is reflected in our dog's relative ease heading into the vet. We drive further to get to Winterfield but it is worth it. Dr. Willis also diagnosed an underlying issue we were unaware of. We can now see the difference in our dog's vibrancy and overall well-being now that this deficiency has been corrected. We took our elderly bunny, Bill, to Winterfield and knew right away he was in good hands (literally)! Dr. Boyd took excellent care of Bill, diagnosed his chronic, age-related problem, administered helpful medication and sent meds home with us to use on an as-needed basis, with very clear instructions about how and when to administer the meds. I couldn't be happier and am so relieved to have a provider who really "gets" bunnies. All of the staff were friendly and helpful. P.S. I will never come here again. Staff was very nice but the Veterinarian kept telling me the obvious. Paid 100 bucks for someone to tell me something I knew before I walked in the door. The doctor also came in without any help and he barely touched my dog, didn't take a temp, didn't check her heart beat, or anything. There is always the care during and after visits and procedures. The follow up in a big concern of theirs. They will keep in touch with you; you and your pet get their full attention. I recently booked a grooming at Winterfield veterinary hospital for my 14 year old chiweenie who is a patient of theirs. I have had dogs groomed at other places before. I was required to get a bordello shot even though the vet said he didn't need one unless I boarded him. I was also required to get a fecal test all to get him groomed . They also charge extra to nail clipping and to clean his anal glands which always had been included in his grooming. Needless to say this grooming was extremely expensive and they didn't do a very good job. It was tip off and I will never take him three again. They are an extremely expensive vet and run unnecessary tests. I will never bring another dog to them again read more

I've been taking my pets to Winterfield Veterinary Hospital (WVH) since they opened in 2009. I will continue to take my pets to WVH. The staff and doctors are always friendly, patient, understanding - and have provided my pets with exceptional care. They always offer advice, but are not pushy about their recommendations. My best friend "Little Socks" the cat has been a diabetic now for over two years and on insulin and a special diet, and recently had a blood analysis done that shows he is in great health. It is a testament to WVH in my mind that an owner can have an animal with a chronic condition and still intend to have many years of companionship. read more

The location could not be more convenient to my home so I have tried over and over to LOVE Winterfield Vet. Unfortunately, my experiences have not been positive ones. There are always so many add on services recommended that I feel lucky to get out of the door under $500 ea EVERY time I go as I have multiple pets. read more

I am thrilled! I came to them with an emergency with my rabbit, and they were very caring, and were genuinely interested in how she was. They took her back within 5minutes and the nurse took her back while the vet, April Rice, came in to explain what was going to happen, and the risks. While our bunny was in the back, the nurse came and updated us frequently. During the wait you could hear the office staff talking to other patients and you could tell they really knew the animals coming in, and had a bond with them. It was very soothing to know they cared that much! When we were ready to leave, they made sure we understood the directions, and had the medicine ready for us. For the surgery that was done, the price was very reasonable as it included all the meds too. The next day the nurse called to see how bonsai was doing, and let me know that Dr. Rice was very concerned too. I am very happy with the staff and doctors, and would (and have been!) recommending them to all my friends! read more

It's very difficult to find a decent avian vet - and she is superb. She's been sweet with both our birds, and she knows her stuff. We won't take our pets anywhere else. read more

Being new to town, my dog and I visited Winterfield since it was just down the street from us. The first thing that seemed off all three times I visited was the general apathy for all the animals in the waiting room. I'm used to vets being crazy about animals, but it didn't feel like there was a genuine concern or interest in my dog (or any of the other dogs for that matter). I was also disappointed by the steep prices charged, including the exams, medications, and tests. In my experience, they ran all kinds of diagnostic tests (some of which seemed like they were just trying to milk me for all I'm worth), and then indicated the price of these various tests upon checking out. Yikes! Our vet in Oregon would routinely call to check in on our dog after a procedure/sickness, but I definitely did not experience this at Winterfield, even after bringing my dog in with severe vomiting. Again, just apathetic. We visited Sycamore veterinary hospital more recently, and the doctors/staff seem much more like genuine animal lovers. read more

I am new to Richmond and took my dog for his first check up. I felt the front desk staff were lovely. They were incredibly friendly so really positive experience there and also with the vet. He was personable, happy to answer any questions I had and give me suggestions. The tech/ assistant assigned to us was ok. She wasn't rude or anything just not really a people person but again it's not a criticism - just more noticeable when I had the front desk staff and bet to compare it to. I don't know that prices were unreasonable - our visit was $30 plus shots fees and meds. The one thing I didn't like is that they do semi-annual visits vs annual visits. That is new to me and to be honest I prefer just a once a year for a healthy young dog. If something went wrong in between he'd be brought in but I think every six months is too much for me. Others may disagree. I don't think your experience will be bad there, though, if it was like mine. read more

Great doctors took great care of my dog. Had her spayed at 4 years old and took her for a teeth cleaning. She was up and running around the same day like nothing had happened. Her teeth are sparkly clean and her breath had improved. Staff was thoughtful and helpful. Won my trust. read more
