When they did let us in we were told to be seated in a booth and were welcomed by a bartender. He offered us some suggestions and gave us a history background on the bar! We had 6:45 reservations and spent about an hour and half there. You choose the length of your reservation when you make it. I'd say it's about one drink per hour unless you drink very quickly. And I wouldn't recommend drinking quickly because 1) you want to savor the drinks and flavors but also 2) they are strong! The staff is great. They are very interested in what they're doing and knowledgeable. I don't know if you could get a seat by just showing up. It's fun to learn to details of a seemingly simply cocktail. logistics: We came on a Friday around 5:30 pm as walk-ins. It's a bit hard to find but it's the door with the red lightbulb. We rang the doorbell and it took a while for them to open so just be patient. Luckily, we were able to get seated for an hour before a reservation showed up. So glad they were able to fit us! During this time, there was plenty of street parking near 6th. I don't love the reservation system. You have to put a $20 deposit and there's not an option to modify your time. Always a treat to be able to visit this cool speakeasy on 6th street in Austin. Formerly a brothel called the Midnight Cowboy modeling agency and massage parlor, this speakeasy has a interesting history and cool atmosphere. This bar is in the middle of dirty 6th street which is really weird because it's surrounded by a punch of rowdy college bars that people party in while this place is a chill bar hidden behind what looks to be an apartment complex door. Recommendations are highly recommended and you can make one online pretty easily. When you get to the front you will not see any signage but you will see a little call box that has some names next to the buttons. One of the names on that list should be "Harry Craddock" and that's the button you should press in order to summon someone who will open the door for you. For my first drink I asked the bartender for a recommendation and he gave me the dark roast ($13) which he said is similar to an old fashioned that I can only get here. Midnight Cowboy seems to no longer be the quiet, elegant speakeasy that it was a couple years ago. Whenever I visit Austin, I prioritize reservations to visit the intimate Midnight Cowboy experience. However, this past weekend, I was extremely disappointed by the apparent deterioration of the beverage quality and service. None of my party's drinks arrived as described: the sparkling wine cocktail had no bubbles, the Szechuan peppercorn drink was sweet/syrupy without any spice, & the drink that was advertised to be made on the cart was not. We absolutely understand that restaurants are still recovering post-covid, and decreased quality is excusable - had it not been paired with such offensive service. *The server who presented the building's history as a brothel told us it was a "whore house" and that some of the previous employees(?) still worked there and we could probably "guess who they were." We've heard the spiel many times before, and this twist on the description seemed unnecessarily vulgar and also slightly racial, given the buildings' former status as an 'Oriental Massage' parlor. Was the server suggesting that we search for any Asian employees? *We were seated in one of the private rooms and were surprised to be greeted by a Jock-Jams playlist, including (but certainly not limited to) "The Macarena" and Venga Boys "We Like to Party." After 45-minutes of politely asking all 3 servers who came by our room if we could either have a music change or simply lower the volume, the staff provided conflicting reports that: (1) They weren't/couldn't control the music, (2) we must be hearing music from outside, or (3) the music was playing everywhere in the bar and we were the only ones who didn't like it. The rest of the bar was definitely playing different music than our room, so we were very confused by the staff responses. After ~45 minutes, we finally decided that the experience would not turn out to be as we desired. We were slightly embarrassed of the experience we had subjected our friends to endure. Comically, just before we left, one of the servers DID finally change the playlist in our room. Hopefully, Midnight Cowboy will return to better days. read more

We were running a bit behind (~10 minutes), but our reservation was still honored and we were seated immediately. They have a great menu of cocktails, and each one we tried was delicious. This place was so so cool! I love speakeasys and I've been to a few, but Midnight Cowboy was really unique! We got really really lucky that we got in. It was more of a lucky happenstance. We found the door to the bar, and we were right behind a group that was just entering the password to the bar to go in. We followed in but were stopped by the bartender and told we needed a reservation. He checked to see if there were any tables available and we were lucky that someone just cancelled their reservation, so we could sit. Apparently you have to make a reservation about a month in advance. Each reservation is an hour long and you get one or two drinks max. The drink menu is intense. All the drinks were in this cute passport booklet. They have a lot of classic cocktails, but there were 16 cocktails that represented different countries. They were each really interesting and unique cocktails representing the country! My friend ordered the Alaska and they did a demonstration on a cart in front of us to make it. It was so so cool!
