I never knew how much of a pain in the ass renting a car was until recently. I don't know if the policies regarding out of state vs. in state resident, debit cards, travel itineraries, etc. are corporate policies or government mandated or both, but it's very inconvenient. I went to Midnight Sun after going to two national car rental businesses. The process of renting a car was a breeze here. The policies regarding debit cards ($300 deposit that is refunded upon returning the car) was very straightforward. They were upfront about the price which was significantly lower than the national chains. Before you drive the car off the lot, an employee takes a short video of the car so you're less likely to end up with charges for damages that were already there. You get emailed a copy of the video as well as photos of the odometer and rental agreement. Great customer service from all the employees with whom I interacted. Lots of Alaska tourist brochures in the lobby, and the plates are named places in Alaska which is a neat local touch. Flexible rental policy. I ended up keeping the car for an extra two days than originally planned without issue. No cost for additional driver which is a plus. Two minor issues to note: 1. The cars are somewhat old and noticeably used. The car I rented (a 2014 Nissan) had some holes in the back seat, dings on the windshield, and scuffs on the bumpers. I wasn't bothered by it since I cared more about the car being functional (which it was), but it's something to keep in mind if the appearance of the vehicle is important to you. 2. For some reason even when I filled up the car with as much gas as possible, the meter didn't show that it was completely full. This had to be an issue with the car as I tried filling up at two different gas stations. I just hope there isn't an extra charge since it showed as just a hair below full. Too soon to tell since I turned in the car the same day I'm writing this review. That aside, I recommend this business whether you're an Alaska resident or a visitor because the rental checkin and checkout process is easy and the prices are reasonable. Moral of the story from my experience is to always go with a local business when possible. read more

We had a great experience renting from Midnight Sun. When planning our trip to Alaska, I had originally booked an economy vehicle from a national chain. Then someone in a National Parks group that I'm in advised me to make sure that my car rental company would allow me to drive the McCarthy Rd in Wrangell-St Elias NP. Wrangell's website led me to Midnight Sun. The Root Glacier hike in Wrangell was the highlight of our Alaska trip so I'm so glad we rented through Midnight Sun and were able to drive the McCarthy Rd. Renting through Midnight Sun was a breeze. I ended up changing our flight after I booked the car to arrive Friday night instead of Saturday morning and arranging an after hours pick-up was straight forward. Greg even gave me his cell phone number. We had no issues whatsoever with the car. I don't really understand other reviewers' complaints that their rental cars had 60K miles on them. Cars last much longer than that. I believe our rental had around 40K but the car I drive at home has 130K so that certainly was not an issue to me. I highly recommend Midnight Sun to anyone traveling to Alaska, especially if you want to drive the McCarthy Rd, which you should. read more

Midnight Sun is an incredible business that really strives to go above and beyond. I worked closely with Greg over the past 6 months arranging for a 15 passenger van rental, and coordinating with Uhaul to have someone pick up a trailer in Anchorage, and bring the van and trailer to Seward for our large group of friends departing a cruise ship, so we could all spend a few days together up in Denali. Pricing was quite reasonable, especially considering the availability they have for larger passenger vans. The entire team was fantastic--coordinated, and accessible, and their committement to customer service is something that you will NOT find at any of the big name car rental agencies. The only place I will be renting a car from again when in Anchorage is Midnight Sun Car and Van rentals. Excellent customer service, a ride to the airport or your hotel is provided. The receptionists are very welcoming and give the best tips on where to dine or go explore locally. The receptionists also gave me personalized maps in case my gps would not work on the road up Denali. Greg and all of his staff are great. By far the best priced car rentals in Anchorage. Picking up and returning our vehicle was a breeze, and we were even given a complimentary ride to the airport at the end of our visit! Horrible customer service, when I asked for a newer car when there were several in their parking lot, their manager denied that they had one. When I made my request once more he Very rudely told me that he is not going to rent me a car and that I should take the shuttle back to the airport and find another place to rent!! This was July in Anchorage and I was not going to find a car available last minute. I literally had to request several times before he allowed me to rent this old battered car!! I rented a car this summer it was $80 a day plus taxes fees came to over $100 a day car was perfect ,ran good , great people but when I had to extend the rental three days because I caught Covid I was charged $700. Like most businesses in Alaska in the summer they're like a pack of vultures preying on the tourists ,cars ,hotels ,plan on paying at least double the regular rate. The $700. When I looked for car rentals online before going to Alaska, it was going to be pretty expensive, maybe $60/day (I don't remember real well now), so we planned on taking the buses around Alaska between Anchorage, Denali, Homer, etc. There are a number of local car rental places along Spenard Rd, but this place had the best rates. We got a small car (Chevy Cobalt) for only $40/day and this turned out to be cheaper than for the 2 of us to take the bus around Alaska. All the places kept warning you about getting cracks ("chips") in the windshield, so we opted to pay a few dollars more for the Chipped Windshield Insurance. To our surprise, the car they pull up has a crack along the whole width of the windshield! Well, I suppose that's pretty good chipped windshield insurance. The car was a bit beat up- I think it was used bought from a tier one car rental company when they were done with it. It wasn't important, the roads are rough and there's lots of gravel, so cars don't last very long in Alaska. Overall- it was cheap, the car worked, and it was easy to rent. read more

I have been to Alaska twice in the last three years to go fishing. There were 6-7 each time and a car was not big enough. We needed a large SUV or a van. Prior to the first trip we checked with the usual suspects and were shocked at the prices. A few of the big companies wanted as much as $2400 a week for a Suburban, I couldn't believe it. After several phone calls I was referred to Midnight Sun Car Rentals by an Alaskan. I called and they had what we needed , a Suburban that fit the 6 of us and all our gear. The price was LESS THAN HALF of the other guys. Their Suburban was not brand new, it was older but in good condition. They are not at the airport, only about a mile or 2 away. This save you the airport tax. We had no problems at all and were grateful for the savings. Alaska is expensive enough as it is. That first trip was in 2011. This year we returned for more fishing. I did not bother looking anywhere else, I called Midnight Sun, and even though it was only a few months prior to the trip, they had an SUV for us. They gave me the same price as I paid 2 years earlier, I was happy about that. When we arrived this year we had an extra person and thought the Suburban might be a bit cramped. I asked if it was possible to upgrade to a van that would be more comfortable and have more storage room. They checked if they had one, and gave us the upgrade at no additional charge. Having the van made the trip much more enjoyable. These guys were great, I would recommend them to anyone traveling to Alaska. They even ran us to the airport when we were running late on our return. We will be back in a couple of years and we'll be sure to get our rental from them. read more

I was a bit anxious about renting from a local shop instead of a brand-name sight-unseen, but the positive reviews here and much more reasonable prices convinced me to give it a shot. I'm glad I did. The folks running Midnight Sun were very friendly and it didn't take more than 10 minutes to pick up the car and be on our way. Pick up took a little longer than necessary due to not having a copy of my personal car insurance policy, but we got it figured out. We had a good experience with them. We initially got an 8 yr old car which started beeping for no reason after we drove a couple of miles. But the service was friendly and they replaced the car without any questions. Bottom line:Cars are a bit older than what you would get from the top rental companies, but price is 30-40% cheaper. As a cynical New Yorker, I repeatedly thought that my interactions with Midnight Sun were too good to be true - it had to be a scam, right? Nope! I was traveling in Alaska with five other friends and lots of camping gear, so we wanted to get a van that would fit us all for some long days of driving. All of us were under 25, which at most rental companies approximately doubles the cost of a car. To add to that, we wanted several people to be able to drive it, not just a single designated driver. Again, most rental places will charge you for that. Midnight Sun, though, was happy to keep the price the same despite having multiple under-25 drivers. All of that was before getting to Anchorage. When we showed up to pick up the seven-person van we'd reserved, the company offered us a 14-person van instead, which would have a lot more space for our luggage. On top of that, since the 14-person van was a couple years older than the 7-person one we'd initially requested, they offered to give us a substantial discount, which amounted to around 10-20% of the total price for our nine-day trip. We naturally adopted the 14-seater (they'd removed the back two rows for us in advance, since we didn't need the seating, which gave us miles of space for bags), named it Ivan, and drove off as happy campers. We had no problem with Ivan - it drove smoothly and held up fine even on dirt roads and with long days of driving. I also really liked Midnight Sun's approach to pre- and post-rental comparison: they have a representative with an iPad walk around the van taking a video to highlight any issues both before and after, and the renter signs off on both. On the whole this was a professional and extremely pleasant and affordable rental experience. I highly recommend! read more

In late July, we rented a car from Midnight Sun for 13 days. The online reservation was smooth. They were also very responsive on the phone when my husband called with some clarifying questions a couple of weeks before picking up the car. We took a taxi from the Anchorage airport to the rental office (as their website / email did not make it very clear that free airport pick up could be arranged on prior request). The rental car pickup experience at the office was not a happy one. The guy at the desk was very brusque; in a curt voice, he went over the list of things that we would be charged if something was damaged. It was almost like he was talking to folks who had never rented before! The same info could have been given in a professional but friendly manner. That was very disconcerting -- our first real interaction in Alaska and so unfriendly! Next, we went to pick up the car in the lot -- it turned out to be a 3 year old basic Impala model with nearly 60K miles on it!!!!! The car was also scratched in a number of places (minor but still indicated great wear and tear). When we asked for a better car with lower mileage, we were curtly told that there were none available (though we saw a number of newer cars in the lot). What choice did we have? In July, try finding another 13 day rental at short notice? So we decided to stick with what was given to us. On the plus side, the car drove well, despite being a basic model; the tires were in excellent condition too. But I have to say, all through the trip, especially when we were driving on long stretches of roads (to Denali , Seward, Homer) with no other car in sight and no cell phone service, I had moments of anxiety about the possibility of our rental car (with 60K miles) breaking down and no help in sight! At the end of the trip, the ca drop off was a breeze. In sharp contrast to the pickup experience, the person handling the drop off paperwork was friendly and very pleasant (it turned out, he was the grandson of the owner). He offered to drop us at the airport. They even sent over another driver to the airport to hand me my water bottle that I had left behind. read more

A great value and just what a gang of 8 adults needed for our two week, 2000 plus mile road trip. Not a brand new van, but a quality van that was really a 12 passenger van with the last seat out. So there was plenty of space for all of the luggage, even with two of the passengers having come straight from a wedding with that extra stuff definitely not needed in Alaska! I was nervous because it seemed kind of "mom and pop", but the check in procedure was amazingly organized and efficient. There were young people running everything, and doing a great job. I was bit surprised that all the other reviews are 5-starts. Certainly this place has quite a few advantages, but in my case, the vehicle's condition could not support a 5-start rating. Pros: 1) a lot cheaper (over 40% less than what you would pay for a usual car rental(like Avis/Hertz). 2) check-in is quick, and without all the BS that tries to sell extra add-ons to the customers. But, I will be lying if I claim that the vehicle I got met even my expectation. Bottom line: the car *did* survive our trip to Seward, but it is nowhere close to the pics you see on their website. The car was over 8 yrs old, with weak breaking capability, did not go through basic cleaning/washing before it was handled to us (there were a big amount of dirt piled in the slits of the side-windows, the carpet on the trunk is detached with the underlying electric wires exposed.) Most importantly, the wiper-blades are almost worn-out, practically dysfunctional in a rainy situation, so I decided to replace the wiper with my own money immediately, which I later deemed the wisest decision I made during this Alaska trip. read more

As as Alaskan who goes into shock when I need a rental car in the summer, I was pleasantly surprised by the "normal" cost of a week long rental from Midnight Sun. Their website was user-friendly, easy to navigate, so making the reservation was a breeze. When I called to confirm my reservation, just in case, they had it and were ready for me. Although we needed a $7 cab ride from the airport (much less than the daily airport tax fee), getting here is easy, and convenient. Close to the Spenard motels, this place stands out. If i had a larger crowd, I would definitely rent one of their vans, as they have many of them available. The staff was welcoming, and, because I was disabled, made sure I was comfortable during the paperwork process. We drove away in a fairly new Chrysler 200, which was plush and clean. It had fewer than 20k miles on it, and drove like a new car. I would recommend this agency and rent from them again if i don't have my car in the city. Great service, thank you! read more

Must read!!!! This rental facility is outstanding!!! I rent cars all the time for business and this was my very best experience. Midnight is super courteous,friendly and extremely accommodating. They have an after hours drop box as well as a valet service close to the airport that you can utilize for a minimal fee. Ask for Greg he is the man!!! Great selection of cars, vans and trucks.
