We ended up booking with Alaska 4X4 because we wanted to drive McCarthy Road and most rental car companies do not allow their cars there. However, Alaska 4X4 does, so we took the chance! Booked our car a month in advance over the phone - they weren't able to answer all our questions, but they were super kind. Pick-up at the airport was super easy and convenient. Had an issue with our rental car during our reservation, but Jane was absolutely incredible. She worked with us over the phone to fix the issue and get us squared away so we were good to go on the next portion of our adventure. I was a little skeptical about reserving my car thorough Alaska 4X4. I did it through Expedia. But my experience was very good. They are located in the main rental center (no crazy offsite). The people were super friendly, and the car was in good shape (not always something that happens in Alaska). Pricing was competitive. So this isn't an offsite agency with lower prices because you have to slog your stuff outside the airport. I think they are locally owned, so support a local business and give them a chance. The Manager Robert is always out of office and never available. The staff does not want to help its like they have stolen 400$ from us, since it was a prepaid booking (as we scheduled to pick up after hours) they just charged 400$ extra and now do not respond. Maybe don't cater to people that want to drive the gravel roads like the Denali and Dalton hwy then send them out with a vehicle with shitty bald street tires to leave them stranded. Had a reservation from another rental company, but they didn't take debit cards. AK 4x4 does! Very professional, and rented me an SUV on the spot. Had an issue with the car, so they gave me another one. Rental was returned after hours and dropped the key. They accidentally charged me for more prepaid gas than agreed, they refunded promptly. I rented a pickup truck for my visit to Alaska. It was a wintertime visit with a good amount of snow and ice. This 4x4 Ram 1500 performed perfectly. Great for a trip around Alaska. Nice to be able to plug in the truck in -35 degree nights that allowed it to start right up in the morning. The price charged was similar to the prices charged by the big companies but the service was much better. I reserved several months in advance and everything was great. The rep I saw at the counter did all the paperwork and then took me out to the truck to go over it. Real good personal service. Then when I returned the truck, it again was personalized service with a very friendly rep at the return place who was friendly and helpful. The truck was a nice truck with very low miles and was super clean. I will most certainly rent from them again on my next visit. read more

I've got mixed feelings about this place, and therefore could not get myself to give them 5 stars. I rely heavily on reviews when planning trips, and I found it best to be fully honest about my experience. Their website is pretty thorough and was able to address most of my questions prior to booking. The booking process was easy and the staff was flexible when we had changes to our flights and decided to upgrade our vehicle. Maybe not the friendliest, but at least they were helpful, right? We picked up our vehicle after hours and they were good with providing instructions on how to pick up the vehicle. Unfortunately our vehicle's windshield was cracked almost all the way through and the vehicle had minor body damage. It would have been courteous if the staff notified us of this pre existing damage, but a vehicle w no damage would have been better. In California it's against the law to drive with a vehicle like that for safety reasons. I guess Alaska's different. Nonetheless, the vehicle drove us around and got us everywhere we needed with no issues. Then it came time to return our vehicle. We received no instructions, and when I reached out they were very standoffish. I'm ex military, and like things to get done right. So if I asked too many questions about returning the vehicle, it was because I wanted to be clear that we followed all instructions. Friendlier or maybe just being proactive in communicating instructions for return would rather than what felt like an attitude may have been more helpful. Would I rent again? I'm not sure. We did see other 4x4 companies in the are and would probably give them a shot next time. read more

So glad that they were around. I delayed on getting car reservations for a trip I planned for family friends and suddenly all the traditional places were closed. The day of departure I still wasn't sure how I was to get my car since we came into Alaska awfully late. I called them and left a message. Thank goodness I had. Them processing my reservation from several weeks earlier slipped through the crack. However, we fixed it and all was well. Amazing experience. We rented a small size SUV in March and got a Chevrolet Equinox AWD with only 2200 miles on it in great condition. The vehicle came with all season tires and was in good shape. The manager was friendly and gave us some nice local tips. The pick up and after hours drop off was breezy. Only thing is that they are located in the North terminal (about 7-8 min walk) and most domestic flights are in/out of south terminal I would recommend giving the local company a chance. If you are driving around Alaska in Winter which is the only way to get around there, I would without a doubt rent from these guys as they are a Alaska based company and all their vehicles are AWD/4x4. They also let you drive their vehicles on unpaved roads which would allow you to explore northern parts of Alaska. They are reasonably priced as the other commonly known rentals that everyone is familiar with and provide better vehicles which are more Alaska ready. You shouldn't drive a non-AWD in Alaska, whatever the season is, so this helps you to rule out most if not all of the cars available at the "big companies". 2. Dealing with Four by four's employees is extremely easy and pleasant. And the car (we rent a Cherokee, which is their lower end iirc) is good. 3. When all is equal (Benefit cost ratio, service quality, etc.), I would choose the small local businesses over the big corporations. And four by four is de facto better than any big rental company. Tip: I don't consider it as a con but something.you need to factor in. Four by four is located at the North Terminal, instead of the South Terminal where most flights land/take off and most rental companies are at. They were extremely flexible and kept the communication going during the time were travel restrictions were changing by the day. My wife and I rented a vehicle in late February for our one -week trip to Alaska. I had called the Anchorage office directly, spoke with Heather and reserved what she called an "Ecosport SUV". We flew in to Anchorage, arriving after 1:00AM, and Heather had waited at the Alaska 4X4 Rentals desk for us! When I had called to make the reservation I had discussed our itinerary with Heather so that she would understand what kind of vehicle we needed. On the agenda was a drive to Matanuska Glacier, to Denali, to Chena Hot Springs, to North pole and to Fairbanks. The driving conditions were not so great: lots of snow, ice and limited visibility. The vehicle that Heather had set aside for us was PERFECT!! It was a GMC Acadia SLT, and Heather had made sure that it had studded tires. When we picked it up it was newly washed and squeaky clean inside and out. The vehicle handled wonderfully, was roomy enough for all of our luggage and as an added bonus, it was very gas efficient.
