Yay to Dr. Ena Lee. Nay to Dr. Michael Spiewak. FYI, they do a new patient visit and then schedule you for a dental cleaning so you can't get it done same day. Saw Dr. Lee for my first appointment. They do a full set of x-rays here which I find a little annoying because I really think that a full set is unnecessary if no problems are found. Anyway, Dr. Lee was nice and I liked her. Then for the cleaning, Dr. Spiewak was the attending dentist (had teeth cleaned by hygienist). My dad is a dentist and I have chosen not to get my wisdom teeth removed because they are impacted but not coming in crooked but they are just hanging out under the gum. The dentist freaked out when I said that I wasn't removing them for now and he was like "OMG there's bacteria festering under there if you were my daughter I'd tell you to do it!!!" I've read the scholarly journals. There's not significant evidence that getting wisdom teeth out as a preventative measure is helpful. I've gone here for another cleaning and yet again Dr Spiewak has harassed me about the wisdom teeth. So overall, I liked Dr Lee but not the other dentist. If you choose to go here, consider saying that I referred you! We both get $20 gift cards if you're referred. read more

I have been going to Midwest Dental for many years, so this review is long overdue. While I've been in college, my home visits usually incorporate the routine teeth cleaning. Although not something I've ever looked forward to, per se, the staff have always been very friendly and Cathy can usually fit me in on short notice, which I always appreciate. Trinley usually cleans my teeth and is very pleasant to work with. I enjoy the "gifts" he sends me home with--usually multiple soft bristle toothbrushes, floss, and travel sized toothpaste. Dr. Spiewak is very thorough and reviews my dental history each visit. He also is very patient, since I normally have a few concerns to discuss each visit. He initially asked me a few years ago if I was grinding my teeth and asked if I had morning headaches (I was). I did not realize I was doing this. Anyways, Dr. Spiewak was able to make me a custom fit special mouth guard for me to wear at night; it fits perfectly and prevents me from grinding my teeth, and hence prevents morning headache. I appreciate him always taking the time to discuss my options and treatment plan with me. Overall, I have had a very pleasant experience here with all of the staff. I find it to be a friendly, welcoming environment. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. read more

Dr. Ena Lee is the most judgmental, condescending and rude healthcare provider I have ever had. She was rude every time I went in and missed major issues in my dental care. Dr. Spiewak tried a little too hard to get my husband to buy expensive and unnecessary procedures and cosmetic treatments. They charge way more than the going rate even for a simple cleaning and do tons of unneeded xrays most insurances won't even cover. I went 3 different times and really gave Dr. Lee a chance to be nice, but trust me, she's incapable. Also, don't try to get your records for free - they charge to transfer them. read more

Here is my experience (Midwest Dental, University Ave office): 1. Reception woman was very unprofessional. They made me sign some papers (policies), but they didn't show me what it was - just gave me a digital pad to sign, but din't show the actual paper on the monitor. I had to demand the papers I signed to be printed-out. One paper was a bit worrisome - said something like "when we charge your insurance company we give you a favor". It was weird, but ok. Next - she didn't know how to copy and paste files on her computer. I brought my X-rays from my previous dentist, she downloaded them, but it took her 35 minutes to move them from one folder to another. 2. Dr. Spiewak finally showed up to do a dental exam (after 1 hour of waiting). One of my teeth broke (almost 50%), and they immediately offered to extract it and replace with 5K implant. I said NO because it happens, and definitely can be treated differently (build-up+crown, if one acts quickly), but probably more work and less money for him. I had two molar cavities, no pain at all. The treatment plan (once again - I had to insist them to print it) said root canal procedures in three visits. Cavity is not the reason to do root canals, but definitely helps to raise extra $. Nothing in the treatment plant addressed my broken tooth (root canal exposed) - it was given the lowest priority, most likely with hope that by the time he is done with the other two infection will destroy it beyond repair. 3. They offered no cleaning - the first time in my life I was not offered to do it. I had to insist, and scheduled an appointment with hygienist. She did a pretty lousy job, also the fastest cleaning I had in my life. I know it because I went to get the second opinion, and they offered cleaning right away because they spotted some build-up leftovers (two weeks after cleaning?). Next the broken tooth was given the highest priority, and restored. Two small cavities addressed (no root canals), and they found two mesial decays Spiewak overlooked that could eventually result in tooth damage. I didn't end up doing any actual procedures with them, and cancelled all the appointments. Don't want to deal with this office any more. read more

I agree about Ashley H's review about Dr. Michael Spiewack, but I would go even further. I went in for a routine exam and I do NOT recommend Spiewack. I waited in the dentist chair for about 30 minutes and ended up staying there 2 hours just for the x-rays and exam! I didn't even get my teeth cleaned! He comes across as pompous and a jerk. And he's a close talker. He made me say out loud what medications I'm on and what they are for!!! Totally inappropriate, invasion of privacy and hardly relevant to a routine exam! He then felt the need to tell me how many people Die from oral cancer... Sure he tried to explain things to me and be thorough but I would go to someone else. If you are going to help people as your job, please work on your social skills! read more

I concur about Dr Spiewak. He has routinely been late, in a hurry, impersonal, trying to sell me junk such as special toothpaste and etc, and is cold. I would agree with Ashley E. that he comes across as a pompus jerk. He talks about his patients as though they are not sitting right in front of him. Additionally, I have never (in 3 years) been seen on time. I wait for an average of 15-20 minutes to be seen when I have an appointment. I will never go back. I have never seen Dr. Lee, but don't care to give Midwest Dental any more chances. read more

After writing this review, I was contacted by a Midwest Dental representative to discuss my experience. Carla was incredibly attentive and helpful -- she gathered information from me and then went to visit Dr. Spiewak's office to discuss the issue with them. After doing so, she promptly called me back and offered to cover half the services now billed. While the experience overall was still frustrating, I really appreciate how quickly someone at Midwest Dental responded to my concerns and willing they (including Dr. Spiewak) were to accommodate me given the circumstances. Hopefully, my experience was an aberrant one, but I really appreciate how professionally and promptly Midwest handled my claim (even if the dental assistant who helped me initially was much less helpful). read more

I've been going here for a few years now, and always enjoy it. When I first became a patient there I had to get some significant stuff done (fillings, sealants) and I think Dr. Lee did a great job (Nothing to compare it to, just have never had issues afterwards). Dr. Lee and one of the dental hygienists (sorry, can't remember name) are really funny and their conversation always kept me entertained while they were working on my teeth. Maybe not the reason to choose a dentist, but could help you relax if you get nervous I guess. Some cool things about this place, they do text message and phone call reminders. You can take the bus there, or there is a bike path that goes right behind the building. I've seen some funky stuffed animal puppet things in the rooms, so it seems like they work with kids. Overall, everyone is really friendly, pleasant place. read more

So I recently moved to Madison and was looking for a dentist. One of my PPO providers happened to be Midwest Dental. I went online and, honestly, was very skeptical about going to this place after reading some of the horrible reviews. In any event, I decided to give it a shot. And I must say, Dr. Ena Lee is a wonderful dentist! She explains everything and gives you options and suggestions. Becky and her are such great team. They always talk about fun stuff while working on my teeth. It is such a good distraction. This is the first time IN MY LIFE that I actually do not mind going to a dentist. These guys are simply awesome! read more

Dr. Spiewak is great! I had a horrible experience with a different dentist about 10 years ago and didn't go to the dentist again until recently. He listened to my concerns, explained what had to be done and why, worked to make sure I was numbed correctly (which apparently is not an uncommon issue, but not all dentists take steps to learn about it), and was kind to me. I highly recommend this place and Dr. Spiewak to anyone! read more

Dr Lee is very thorough but overall this office is worth skipping. Each appointment they will find a new procedure needed (cavity filling, x-ray) even if you take their dental health advice of changing new toothpaste, etc. This office is a waste of time- too bad Dr. Lee is part of this group. read more

Chelsea Boyle is the best hygienist in Madison she's goes the extra mile! Dr Ena Lee is great and efficient she is professional kind and caring. She is quick and polite! Dr. T subbed for her nice guy said I had beautiful teeth so can't complain! He was also very professional and efficient. Again Chelsea Boyle is an amazing hygienist funny quick w X-rays tells you what u need to do to improve you're oral hygiene and most of all very personable and connects with her patients! Office staff bills easily as I had two insurances and they took care of everything. Hats off to Chelsea Dr Lee and her team for an amazing experience for the past two years dental wise! read more

I have been going to midwest dental in another city my whole life. When I moved to Madison, I was happy to see that I could keep going to my old dentist. However, I had nothing but bad experiences for over 3 years. They were ALWAYS late. I don't know why I bothered being on time... Also, Dr. Spiewac was cold and impersonal, seemed overwhelmed and anxioius, and made me uncomfortable. Once, their exray machine was broken and the hygenist took like 10 exrays of my mouth. Another time, Dr. Spiewac was working on an "emergency" patint so I had to wait, as I was a non emergency. When he finally got to me (40 miniutes later), he jabbed himself with the syringe that he was supposed to use for me. Then I had to do all sorts of blood work etc. He was so discombobulated. I would never recommend this place to anyone. read more
