Overall a great experience. They had their coffee shop open and while they had decent selections, I had forgotten my water bottle so I opted to buy a slightly overpriced one of theirs ($3). I went there for an evening event: Christmas in Killarney--they had cancelled last year, so it was nice to see them on the list for the holidays. JCCC brings in such amazing artists and people and this was no exception. Although one guy had mic issues he carried on like the professional he was and things went well. It wasn't exactly what I was expecting--I was thinking just a musical performance by a random group--but it was a musical. It was enjoyable--my foot was tapping and my hands were clapping so I must've had a good time! ;) read more

This past weekend I attended my first concert at Midwest Trust Center @ Johnson County CC. The Center has two theaters - Yardley Hall which seats 1250 and Polsky Theater which seats 400; I attended The Small Glories concert at the Polsky. The theater is spacious for only having a 400 seat capacity, with good tiered aisle elevation, great acoustics and comfortable cushioned seating. They book some very unique events so I'm clueless as why it has taken me so long to attend a show here, but I already have highlighted some upcoming events, so hopefully my return is soon. Free and safe parking is also a plus. Chalk one up for the suburbs! read more

This review is for Yardley Hall, though as Rob M mentions, the Carlsen Center also consists of other theaters. Design: think super modern, sleek, and pristine. No drinks or food are allowed inside and I can get behind this, when you've a concert hall so clean, that you feel you could conduct surgery in. Of course this also lends to a bit of a sterile feel, and I do prefer my old, glorious theaters, BUT... The sound!! STELLAR!! Amongst the best sound I've heard in KC area venues. If you come for a concert here, you will hear every single note that you're supposed to hear. It's crystal clear and absolutely state of the art. So, 5 stars for the sound experience. The lighting could have used some help, as they didn't dim the theater lights until well after the first band started playing. Just a pet peeve of mine and it seems really amateur to do such a thing. Another weird glitch had the theater black out suddenly at some point after the first band finished. Not sure if this is a stage management thing or what. read more

The Carlsen Center is a number of different stages, but Yardley Hall is the focus, and where most people will normally attend a performance at JCCC. The venue itself is spartan in design, but full of modern convenience and comfort. If JCCC can figure out its ongoing parking situation, this place will be perfect. With the Nerman and Cafe Tempo nearby, it's an ecosystem of art and performance, even in ol' Johnson County :-) read more

We came here for the OK GO concert this last weekend. I wasn't expecting too much since I haven't been to one of their concerts. Boy, I was in for a treat! The venue was perfect and there was a merchandise table outside. Once we got inside, the stage was all decked out with all sorts of instruments from trash cans to pipes. Plus, there were big blowers that blew confetti around us. I just loved the large screen where you could watch the videos too. Overall, you can't go wrong with this place since these people care to put on a good show. read more

The Carlsen Center consists of multiple theaters, but the shining star of these is Yardley Hall which is the biggest of the venues. Live performances are the order of the day here and some of them are simply spectacular. In this venue, I have seen Lyle Lovett, Hot Tuna, Peter Frampton, Dr. John with The Blind Boys of Alabama (The Bilnd Boys stole the show), Jazz Winterlude Performances (this year Deborah Brown stole the show) and many other performances. Yeah, they have some duds like Debby Boone (so incredibly skippable), but they do a great job of bringing in some really incredible acts. The acoustics here are wonderful and there's really not a bad seat in the house. If you can't get student tickets, you'll pay a pretty penny for most performances. The one nagging thing that bugs me about this place kind of demonstrates me at my worst nitpickiness, but the mauve walls are just atrocious, especially since they don't go with the red curtains and seats. Please, I beg of you, JCCC, hire a painting crew to do something, anything, with the walls. Otherwise, I love the facility. read more

The Carlsen Center at Johnson County Community College is the major performing arts venue in Johnson County (suburban Kansas City). The Center consists of Yardley Hall, an acoustically fine concert hall, and the Polsky Theater. The Center also includes the Bodker Black Box Theater and a Recital Hall. Yardley Hall is the site of one of the Kansas City Symphony's classical music subscription series (on Sunday afternoons). The Carlsen Center also has a subscription performing arts series of its own. In addition, there are free series of classical music recitals and jazz performances at noon on certain Mondays and Tuesdays during the academic year. Very nice facility. They have a wide variety of acts from Russian ballets to Peter Frampton. The acoustic in Yardley are very good. I have even been to several lecture here that were very nice. read more

I was familiar with both shows, which made the situation doubly frustrating. During Spamalot we talked to an usher during intermission. We were seated toward the front, and she said maybe the problem was that we were too close. It was a shame, because it looked like a great show, and I'm familiar with the songs, but if you can't hear the words - it definitely loses something. But during Little Shop of Horrors we sat in the middle section, and the sound was not one bit better! I talked to the House Manager, who didn't have anything helpful to offer at all. Now this theater is offering Young Frankenstein, a musical I really love. But I hate to shell out another $30 per ticket for a show I can't hear. I'm astonished at the 5-Star reviews here. What's the secret, guys? Is there some secret place in the theater where you can actually hear the shows?

You can even try a class to see if you like it before you enroll. They discourage parents hanging around and potentially distracting the class (with younger kids) but our night class has been great thus far. Since it's dark out, the kids can't really see the parents outside. They start my daughter's class off with tap shoes and then change over to ballet on the latter part of the class. Price is about par with other places around town but we chose it based on longevity and experience.

The show is a master class in beautiful 1950's style 4-part harmony, and these young men were so impressive. Definitely one of the best versions of the show that I've seen!! I went on the last day of the run, and I wish I'd gone earlier so I could've seen it again. This was my first time seeing a show at this venue, but I'll definitely be back for more. The theater is small, about the size of KC Musical Heritage Society (I think that's what it's called???) at Crown Center, but the chairs are very comfortable and we didn't feel crowded at all. There's not a bad seat in the house.

An older couple that just ooze that small town/country hospitality that makes you want to come out every weekend for the featured movies. They always have current movies and the biggest summer hits. One of the most notable things about this drive in is how clean and well kept it is. It would be a real shame to see this one go the way that so many others across the country have. The speakers are loud and clear. The restrooms are exceptionally clean and well maintained with what appears to be newer fixtures. The lot is pothole free. You can just tell the owners take pride in the business. The concession area has a small, but typical movie theater menu and the prices are right in line with other theaters if not actually less expensive. (A large bucket of popcorn and large drink will cost you less than $10.) The cost of the movie is the best in the area at only $7 for adults, $1 for children 3-11, and children under 3 are free. You really can't beat the cost for a family night of entertainment. This drive in is at risk of closing due to the requirement and cost to upgrade equipment to digital and this may be their last season open. Make sure you visit and support what is a dying business across the nation. This farm was about 40 minutes south west of my home in KCMO and located right off the roadway. My wife and I were greeted by one of the neighbors who helps keep an eye on the farm and run the register for the stand. They have plenty of live berry bushes and small trees in the nursery part of the farm and so many pumpkins. You couldn't walk five feet without finding more pumpkins!! They have a cute little building which houses all the canned jams, jellies, honey, and syrups that they have available. My wife and I spotted some peach and blackberry jalapeño jam and I was hooked!! Who doesn't love a little kick to their morning toast? They even had a small corn maze in the back of the farm for kids. As well as a sizable bonfire pit set right next to a stream that looks like it's amazing on cool autumn nights. They have a rabbit, three donkeys, and a cat who wonders the property. Being an animal lover I couldn't resist saying hello to the donkeys. One was rather happy to see me pick up the brush and pet him for 10 minutes while the other two eyed me down. When we were there it was quite and peaceful as we were the only customers. Talking with the lady who helped us she said "wait until tomorrow and this place will be full". She went on to tell us that it's mainly busy with school trips during the week and that on Wednesday they had a kindergarten class come through to learn and make their own cider. Did I mention that yet? You can schedule a hayride and make your own fresh squeezed cider!! If that's not a reason to get some friends together this fall then I don't know what is!! If you're looking for a cute intimate farm to get your fresh pumpkins look no further!! This place is worth the drive.
