I've bookmarked Mignon awhile ago and swear I passed by a million times. It's right next to Cole's and The Association sunken below street level a bit. This place is easy to miss and if you go one block east, it's not the best part of town. The wine bar has a cozy, dim, European feel to it, and doesn't seat very many. We were seated by the door looking outside of storefront since the bar was full. Our waitress was very knowledgable of the wines they served. She recommended a shiraz which we both normally don't drink but ended up a great recommendation. We paired that with some nuts and almonds. Service was great and attentive. Mignon is a constant reminder of why I love downtown. Our city has become a haven for good food and I love it. Tho, for this reason it makes it difficult for The Man and I to make our rounds to all of our favorite spots. We can go weeks without revisiting a favorite restaurant of ours because we're busy going to all the others. Last night we were set on going to Baco but changed our minds at the last minute. The thought of wine and cheese just sounded so inviting. Off we go.... Summer is coming. It was a warm beautiful evening. We strolled into Mignon and immediately felt a sense of comfort. The sweet gals here are just the thing to put a smile on a weary girl after work. Their charcuterie plate will take you around the world. You must try the smoked prosciutto. It's divine. Order 5 cheeses, as well. This combination will be the perfect accompaniment to any wine, whether a refreshing white or a bold red. The portions are extremely generous and the quality of cheeses and meats are right up there with any fine dining restaurant. They've done a slight facelift to the space so that they may now offer a few more nibblets. The atmosphere is unpretentious as well as the people that will serve you. I reiterate.. Mignon means cute. In the 15th century it was also a derogatory term for the male "favorites" of the Kings of France. Just a little tidbit for you. Walking into Mignon, there is nothing to remind you of young boys being taken advantage of by powerful Kings. Instead, you are struck by how tiny this place is. "Petit" may have been a more apt name. Not to say this is a bad thing. If you're by yourself, with a friend, on a date, it's a good set up. All of the seating is around the bar. You'll soon learn this is necessary, because you've never heard of any of the wines on the list. Oblige the dude pouring the wine! In my particular case, this dude was Eric, and he was supremely helpful. He was very interested in helping us find wines we would enjoy, giving us tastes and recommendations based on our tastes. He was also very personable and interesting to talk to. I would like to point out an absolutely fantastic double pairing. I've never tried bleu cheese with honey, and boy have I been missing out. Eric poured us a tasting of a port to pair with our new honey laden bleu cheese, and my friends, it was one of the best pairings my taste buds have ever relished. So what I'm saying is: Yes, it's small. Yes, the wine list is hard to navigate, but the solution is right in front of you! Don't be shy and ask for recommendations! This is a petite wine bar, not totally conducive to a group hangout. I visited Mignon with a party of 4 and we had to wait a few minutes for seats to open up. It's a dim and intimate space with a counter surrounding the bar where everyone sits. We stopped by during happy hour from 6-8pm. The drink menu was straightforward and broken down to sparklings, reds and wines (happy hour: $6 red and white wines). They also got a tiny selection of beers and other non-alcoholic beverages that I didn't delve into. The food menu consisted of small bites, from which we ordered the following: -Frog legs: crunchy and unique, something that's not commonly offered outside of Asian restaurants. Tasted just like chicken. -Smoked fish plate: a small plate of smoked trout and salmon for $10. A very average dish. -Charcuterie plate: The board comes with pickles and different sauces. I generally love charcuterie and this one did not disappoint. Each cut was delicious and it was a good deal at 3 for $13. -French ham and brie sandwich: we ordered this one because it was on their happy hour menu. Super simple and soft in every bite. The bread was fluffy and complemented the brie and ham so well! -Cheese board: five cuts of cheese with nuts, jam and baguette. My favorite were the cheddar and brie, but all 5 of them were fresh and delicious. Everything was decent, but service was on the sluggish side. The food came out slowly, one at a time. Quick update from my second visit. If you walk into Mignon and there's an autostrada sandwich on the menu, get it. It's bigger than you'd think, with layers of salami, mortadella, provolone, and spicy pepper relish on a crunchy fresh roll. It is superb, and better by a fair margin that anything else on the menu. I also tried the jamon serrano with market melons, fresh figs, and mint, which was fine but just fine. Service was even better the second time around. Our server was really friendly and knowledgeable and, I can't not mention, incredibly gorgeous. I'll bet customers fall in love with her every day. Anyway, autostrada, wine, good times. The only place you should be eating on Sunday night in DTLA (really all of Los Angeles) is Mignon, just east of 6th and Main. All night happy hour, five dollars for wines and "small" plates that take hold of your tastebuds and render your tongue useless for conversation. Surrounded by a playlist heavy on Frank, Dean and French music, your Sunday night will seem to go on for days. I could regale you for paragraphs with stories of simply elegant charcuterie; goat cheese, plum and arugula tartines; baked raclette with tomato jam; and croque monsieurs that are so well made each bite should be taken with eyes closed so as to fully appreciate how flavors can actually inspire each other to be better while you are tasting them; but the longer you read, the longer you will not be on your way to this restaurant. Out of love potion number 9? Take your date here. If he/she is worth their foodie salt, the effect of this place will make them be all over you like that cougar on Matt Damon in Ocean's 13. True, the restaurant is small, but it's usually quite easy to sit with a party of 2-4 and no reservation. During Happy Hour, a glass of red or white is available for $6 (beers are also discounted) and most of the food is available for $5. Which brings us back to... THIS SANDWICH The sandwich in question is ham and brie on a baguette. It's always there. Sometimes they have roast beef, sometimes not. But the ham is always there. And it's GREAT. It's simple, it's classic. I could eat one every day. During happy hour it's $5 (a steal) but normally $7 (still a good deal!). The last time I was in a guy got one to go (what a good idea). I've suggested not-so-jokingly to my lady that we move to downtown so I can be closer to this sandwich (she's not so keen on downtown and the noise, and transients...). Still, she likes Mignon. In addition to a sandwich or two the menu includes bites, meat and cheese selections ($5 each) and a steak and potatoes dinner ($15) all prepped in the tiny bar area with nothing but an oven and a meat slicer (from what I've seen). It's a friendly, casual place. The crowd is mixed. I've seen security guards, first dates, and awkward dates. They have a couple tables outside. Mignon is a charming little spot next to Cole's in DTLA. The entire place is just one island bar with stools around it. It's very dim and quiet inside. Good for couples, not great for groups. HH is from 5pm-8pm with $5 wines and $5 plates. The menu is handwritten in hard-to-read cursive on two pieces of paper stapled together. Plain and simple, as more things in life should be. Both the red and white wine I tried were great. I know little to nothing about wine except that I enjoy drinking it, so that's all I can say about it. The food, on the other hand, I can describe in better detail. We tried the pate served with mustard, cornichons and slices of toasted baguette. You can't go wrong with pate and they gave a huge chunk of it! We asked for extra bread which they happily provided. The warm dates were sitting in a layer of olive oil- super delish, but the portion was really small (6 dates for $5!) The heirloom tomatoes, drizzled in olive oil were really good too but also only came with 4 thin slices. I would've enjoyed more of it. After a horrible experience at Onyx Lounge, Mignon came up on my Yelp search to save what was left of our Happy Hour. They actually have a slightly later Happy Hour 6-8 pm, which is great for those who don't work or live in the DTLA area. This is a reallllly tiny place, but great selection for their HH menu at affordable prices. Most items are $5-6 and includes escargot, frog legs, various sandwiches, pizzas, and wine! +Roast beef sandwich- good, wanted more! +Escargot- served out of the shell and with a tasty puff pastry on top. +Frog legs- first time trying this and it tasted like chicken. Not overly impressed, but there were these tasty roasted garlic cloves that came with it ahha Service here was kind of spotty. The server was nice, but forgot our water a couple of times and took awhile to get our check. Also, we had ordered the mignon mac and cheese at the beginning of our meal and when we asked for it, she said they "ran out" because someone had ordered the last one.. even though we had already put in our order long before they did. I came here with my roommate as we're starting a tradition to eat out every week at a new place. As we live really close to downtown and there's always new places opening up, we felt like doing French this night. Mignon was a very pleasant surprise. It's a teeny little place set up bar style. It is candle lot and very European looking. They had really cool turn-of-the-century paintings that I sat directly across from and I thought it was really cool since I hadn't seen those kinds since college art history. The waitresses were also French haha. I really felt like I was in a French restaurant. Our order: for charcuterie we ordered the jamon Serrano and speck, for the les for ages we ordered Cana de cabra. For the main plates we ordered the escargot dish, frog legs, and the oeufs en cocotte ( baked eggs, leeks, cream). For wines: the Pinot noir and the merlot. Everything came together amazingly. I used to hate places that served dishes that were a tad bit small, but lately I've learned to appreciate them. My roommate and I were having a conversation about how the French could eat so much cheese bread and wine but we concluded that they sit at dinner for hours talking while they enjoy their meal; therefore they eat so much less than their American counterparts. It was a really cute romantic place, albeit maybe not with your roommate, but still a great dining experience all together. Cheese, wines, baguettes, and the main dishes that they have are very authentic, and you can tell, their menu is really small but it really offers the ideal French cuisine. But it was such a well-worth it $70 AND we were splurging left and right. 1) Old school italian reds wine flights was amazing. $12 and you got 3 glasses of big pours of delicious wines. the first was apparently michelangelo's favorite wine (and now mine too). second was earthy. last was a nice lambrusco. perfect start to a perfect evening. 2) mac and cheese everyone gushes about was ok. 3 stars. a little not flavored enough and not cheesy enough for me, but i am a salt and cheese fiend. 3) sandwiches were BOMB! We got the one with the pickled grapes. PICKLED GRAPES you say??! yes. pickled awesome grapes, in a grilled panini sandwich of yumminess. Quaint and small are ok but small and narrow are not. This wine bar is just set up poorly. It's like walking into a long, narrrow closet, and doesn't facilitate conversation and groups. Yeah, the hanger light fixtures were cool...they would've been nicer if the cobwebs on them were removed. Service was horrible. The one guy who helped us (and there was another guy preparing food) had the personality of a wall. He never smiled. And, it took a good 30-45 minutes to receive our salads and sandwiches. Chalk this up to either ineptness, poor service, or their ploy to have us stay for awhile longer and continue to drink wine. There was a group of us (8) and although we all ordered separately (amongst couples and smaller parties), the main guy put our check all together. AND, it was hand-written (in scribble)...what a pain to deal with! As much as I wanted to love this place, I didn't. What could've been a great experience was ruined because of how hot and miserable we were. The AC wasn't on - no fans - no nothing. The place is already small as it is - cute, quaint and romantic (who wouldn't love it) - but after some wine the room gets hot - very hot! Unfortunately there was some misunderstanding about the pre-fixe menu as well. We weren't trying to pick a fight we just wanted better understanding and the waitress got defensive. Service is also slow so if you're looking for something quick this definitely isn't the place. This also isn't a place for groups more than 2 (3 at most) as most of the seating is at the bar. It's an itty bitty teeny weeny wine bar, like two mini tables and a bar/kitchen counter thing that wraps around w minimal space to walk around it --- particularly challenging when you've had a couple glasses and trying to squeeze your way through to the restroom in back. Definitely an intimate setting and incredibly dim.... Pretty much candle light but it happened to work out in my favor since I came here on a date and my face had decided it'd be the perfect time to grow a nice, plump red pimple. Ambience: Not really my style. A little cold and gray and cramped; I guess I like my wine bars a bit more warm and sumptuous. Others might like it more. Seating arrangement is cool (large rectangular bar) but the seats themselves aren't very comfortable. I find myself standing up periodically to stretch my legs and back. 2 stars. Service: Varies a bit. Knowledge of food and wine is good. Friendliness and promptness varies considerably, but usually falls a bit short of my general expectations. Every time I've been here, I remember waiting for something for a long time...apps, wine refill, check. And I've never liked a server enough to ask for a name (which I often do.) Considering the servers are inside the bar and never more than 5 feet away...it could be much better. 3 stars Food and Wine: 4 stars. Most dishes and most wines are very good, but usually just a little short of outright memorable. They rarely ever stock any wines I've even heard of, so I often ask for reccs. On my most recent visit, I liked all the food we ordered except one dish (one of the tarts - the proportions were off, and it was a bit greasy.) And we liked all the wine we ordered, too. Happy Hour: 4 stars. It's a solid happy hour, and a great place to go on Sunday nights. Unfortunately I don't think of it often enough. Mignon definitely lives up to its name - French for 'cute' - as its interior is charming and intimate. It seats a total of about 10 people who are all seated around a U-shaped table. The stools face the small interior of the U where a cook prepares the meals in a tiny stove and the server provides the wine from the shelves along the wall and washes the dishes in a tiny dishwasher, also located in the center of the U. You can see the entire restaurant from any angle as it is one perfect square with two doors leading to the restrooms. It is dimly lit by a string of light bulbs hung from the ceiling and a few other lights scattered throughout the room. The restaurant opened at 6pm on the Saturday night that I was there. We were the first ones there and were given the prix fixe (prefixed) menu that they were serving for Valentine's Day. They offered four courses for $10 with a good amount of choices per course. We started with their Lorinon wine from Spain. It ran for $9 a glass and was just a tad bitter but not in an unappetizing way. I don't think it was worth $9 a glass though. We then ordered escargots and prosciutto wrapped dates for our first courses. This dish was a little too salty. The prosciutto was overpowering because the dates they used weren't big enough to provide the right about of sweetness to balance it out. The escargot dish was really tasty. It had a warm and flaky pastry square atop a bed of 5 escargots. The combination of the two was delicious. The escargots were just a bit salty and earthy. This was definitely my favorite dish of the night. The next course was a hanger steak and potatoes. The potatoes were tiny golden nuggets that were pretty touch and were too small to hold much flavor. The steak looked about medium rare and was pretty tasty. Definitely juicy and just a bit tough to cut through. After the main course they offered four different cheeses. We picked the mahon which is a hard Spanish cheese and an Italian buffalo cheese called quadrello. Both were good but the portion size was too small. They gave us one slice of each cheese served on a cheese board with honey, a tiny bit of jam, almonds and walnuts. It was all very tasty but a bigger portion would have been appreciated, especially considering the price we paid. For our desserts we picked the chocolate mousse and the citron gateau. Both were tiny, especially the mousse but when paired with each other they were pretty good. The quality of the chocolate was great and the cake was a bit too dry for my liking but I enjoyed the citrus flavor. The service was great. The chef came over a couple times to ask how we were liking our food and the server was extremely helpful with describing the dishes and what to expect from them. They played romantic French music that made us feel like we were in a French movie. I am tempted to give this place 5 stars because of how much I loved the ambience and the service but the food just wasn't 5 star quality. Despite the 4 courses we had, we were still hungry a few hours later because the portions weren't very generous. When I walked in, I felt like I was swooped to somewhere in New York City. It is a very tiny wine bar made specifically for residents in the DTLA area. If you are just wanting to talk to someone or be by yourself, it is a great place. If you are planning on coming here with a group of people, I would discourage that because there isn't much room to begin with. When i parked my car, I was a little skeptical of the area. I believe the spaces on Los Angeles Street don't have a limit after 6pm. I parked on 6th street. During the weekdays, you cannot park there from 3-7pm but during the weekends (Saturday and Sunday), you can park there so I would plan on going then. I noticed the crowded is very ecclectic. In addition, I loved that the menu was fastened together by a clothes pin. Also, be sure to come here during happy hour. The prices for many of the wine and food items are $5. Happy Hour after work and right before the DTLA Artwalk! A friend introduced me to this place and I am so glad she did. I think I found a new place to add to my DTLA favorites! Its a small place with maybe about 20 seats. As small as it was, within 30 minutes of opening their doors at 5pm, it was jam packed inside. They serve wine and small plates. There is no kitchen. All the food is prepared in the middle of the bar. Happy hour specials are $5 each. We started off with a few glasses of wine and a few starters. Everything we tasted was simple but amazingly delicious. As we watched the girl behind the counter prepare new meals, we just had to order one of everything. I just wanted to pack her up and take her home with me! We tried the pate, baked eggs with lentils and cream, mozzarella plate, and smoke salmon plate. Everything was so good! This is a place very good for an intimate gathering, due to the U shaped design of the bar. I'd come with one or two friends next time but not much more than that cuz it's hard to chat that way. Happy hour is from 6-8 so arrive early to ensure that you're seated. We got two bottles of the happy hour red and white, both of which were decent. I liked the white a little more than the red, it was a little bit sweeter. Our food picks: Ham and brie sandwich (5/5): My favorite dish had to be the ham and Brie sandwich. The baguette was amazingly crusty but didn't hurt to chew like some breads can, and the sea salt speckled on top was a good addition. The Brie was very creamy and very mild. The portion is quite large and can be shared. Ouefs with leek (3/5) I was a little disappointed with this dish...It wasn't as flavorful as I expected and the yolks were halfway between runny and solid so I'm not sure if it was overcooked or if they intentionally did it that way. I was expecting more of a custard consistency with beaten egg rather than whole baked eggs. It wasn't bad though, and the baguette that comes with it is already buttered which is nice. Cheese plate (4/5): One of the workers picked our cheeses for us since we didn't know what we wanted. We got a soft, semi soft, and firm cheese and they were all good. It's served with baguette, honey, fig jam, almonds, walnuts, and a couple fig slices. Quite good. Frogs De Provencal (3.5/5): Not bad, the onions in it are very nicely caramelized but overall it's a little oily. I wouldn't get it again. Hanger steak: my friend got this one and it looked pretty good but the steak is really tiny...I didn't try it but don't be surprised at the size if you order this. The service is pretty slow. The food takes forever to come out but it's a place to relax and have a chill night with a couple girlfriends or a significant other. read more

Ever wanted to go to Paris and drink wine? Then this is your place. My friend loved Mignon but I really thought it was way over priced. The ambiance was very artsy, surrounded by books and art work by famous French artists & authors. The bar is U-shaped with the server and cook sitting in the middle of the U where they can help the customers. After taking our order we waited what was a long time to get our food. I really think that is on purpose since most French inspired eateries or cafes are designed so patrons can socialize and pass-the-time; the same goes for this place. They definitely want you to order more wine while waiting for your food. The food was delicious, the only issue I had was that it was all finger/bar-food. Do not come here with an empty stomach. The portions were very small so it would compliment your wine choice; not to get you full. The bill ($80- not including tip) - Two glasses of red wine - One beer - $25 entree dish (comes with small appetizer, chicken entree & desert) - Brie bread plate I thought the price was high, but my friend bought this with a Groupon so it was really $45 which seemed at the right price. Personally I didn't like this place, but it is a wine bar and comes with a set of rules on how to consume wine and what foods would best bring out the flavor in your drink. LOVE this cute french bar.... especially during happy hour! The ouef cocette dish (baked egg, cream & leeks) is my absolute favorite. Their small plate selections for happy hour were $5 too, but we just couldn't order a bite knowing that we're going to eat dinner in an hour and a half. The regular wine, food, and cheese menu selections are perfect for wine tasting. The service is friendly, and the staff quite knowledgeable to help you pick a wine to drink. If you ask them, they'll give you a small taste before you purchase a glass. The atmosphere is intimate and as urban as Downtown Los Angeles gets. Mignon Wine and Cheese Bar is a nice, urban gem for a wine tasting escape after work, a date, or a night on the town. Went with a Gilt City offer that was expired... of course the rule is that even if expired you still get the value of what you paid. To their credit, the staff at Mignon understood that and were perfectly OK with it. That doesn't always happen. It's small. We were a party of 3 and there are two tables in the place that will accommodate that. The chairs are super uncomfortable and the bar stools look even more uncomfortable (literally stools, no backs). It's really a small place. Others have said this but if you have more than 2 people, it's not conducive. I guess they have a Happy Hour but there appears to be no HH menu. We just ordered the "white" they have on HH. It was fine. We enjoyed our wine and ordered a cheese selection (our server made a perfect recommendation), the Heirloom Tomato, Olive Oil, Sea Salt (beautiful and tasty), and the French Ham & Brie Sandwich (this is the amazing smell that you get throughout the place I think... it's pretty good). In another space, this would be my go-to wine bar because the wine is nice and well priced and the food is good. But there is no space for gathering. It's intimate and would be good for a date if you can score one of the few tables, but the chairs are just awful. I think I sat on a folding picnic chair. Music and lighting are soothing. The neighborhood is sort of sketchy. Parking is hard. I parked in a $4 garage a block away and the elevator to the roof top parking had a lot of fresh urine (I am not making this up) inside. Not Mignon's issue of course, but you should know that it may not be comfortable walking to your car. On my way to the gross garage I parked in, I was approached by several people offering me services or that would like to put me into some sort of service. My friends parked a few blocks away and paid around $10 but the area they parked in seemed to elicit fewer job offers. The staff at Mignon were delightful. I absolutely love wine and this place has lots of wine-red, white, rose, etc. It's small and intimate. Not many seats. Kind of has an european feel. People tend to come here to wind down, relax with friends, talk in French (JK, maybe). Got some small eats, the smoked salmon plate, I think. We came really close to closing time (my bad). The hours aren't bad. You can be like me and head to Association next door when they close (so bad, I know). Most likely would come back with friends who like a more chilled environment and who actually enjoys wine. read more

I bought a Groupon to Mignon so we stopped in to check it out before going to a concert at the Nokia theater. It was around 5ish and the place was pretty empty. We grab our seats and was quickly asked for drink orders. Since it was our first time there we asked the bartender for suggestions on wine and food. We ended up getting a glass of red wine. For food we had the Mac n cheese, Proscuitto di parma, smoked salmon, and a small plate of baked eggs, leek, and cream. My favorite was the Proscuitto di Parma. This dish came with thinly sliced Proscuitto and sweet cantaloupe melon. I love how it's a simple dish but tastes fantabulous. This place is kinda hidden since it's so tiny but it's only a few doors down from the famous Cole's French dip. read more

Red red wine... come close to meeeeee! The wine was okay. Again, I'm no wine connoisseur. But the red wine I had was nice tasting. Mac n Cheese, average. Two lone dudes were sitting on either side of us on the barstools and I know we're interesting and all, but they were like, eavesdropping on our whole conversation. Dude!!! Now this is what i call a diamond in the rough.....I absolutely loved every second of my experience at Mignon. Mignon means "cute" in French but it way more than cute....the decor is still unfinished because it opened up less than 10 days ago. The Hangar chandeliers, the retro-metallic bar stools, the wired neck-ties on the wall....i could go on but then what would you discover when you visit...... The Cheese-hand and Sommelier were fabulous at giving each person in our party a personalized recommendation of what to order based on our preferences. They were both extremely knowledgeable and you could feel that not only were they thrilled to be opening this new wine-bar but they loved what they did. Talking about wine and cheese is definitely more than a job for those two...its a passion. I had the : Kunik-goat cheese with crispy bread; the Proscioutto & the Blue de basque. All of which i would highly recommend. The wines by the glass that i tred varied from $9-12 and both reds were savory. Parking was the only downer on my review but all else was amazing. I enjoyed it a lot~ *Escargo en Croute $10: It comes with 5?6? pieces of Escargot with toasted bread on top. I was a bit disappointed with the escargot. I've tried escargot at difference places and from what I could remember, I enjoyed it when the flavoring would linger in my mouth once I eat it. The overall flavor was enjoyable but somehow, after I started chewing it, the flavor disintegrated and tasted bland. it wasn't as satisfying as I hoped it to be~ Main: *Hanger steak, Roasted Potatoes, Maitre d' hotel $17: The steak was cooked medium rare. My friend thought it was bland but he likes to meat to the saltier side. I enjoyed every bite of it and complemented well with our wine! Great date night spot for wine lovers! An intimate setting usually follows with dark lighting. It is bar seating with limited seats. I suggest you come early for happy hour and find yourself a seat. It's gets a little tight in here especially when there's no air flow going through the restaurant. If you can find a seat by the door, take it. The food. It's decent. The French ham and brie sandwich was my favorite. The bread here (which is served with almost everything) is amazing. Brings me back to the days I spent in Paris eating hard, crispy French bread with butter all day. SO MUCH BUTTER HERE. I usually don't complain about carbs and butter, but there is definitely a lot of butter spreading going on. The night I came in they ran out of bread. I waited about 30 minutes for it. This is a great little wine bar in DTLA, romantic, dark and intimate. They don't take reservations but I called ahead to see if they'd be busy on a Saturday night for some pre-dinner drinks and found parking and seating, no problem. We just shared one dish, the popular baked eggs one - which was delicious - but their entire food menu looked appetizing and creative. The wine list was short and full of more obscure wines. I don't know much about wines so I asked for a recommendation and got a Syrah blend that was excellent. The service was a little slow but everything else was fantastic. It'd probably be hard to come here during peak hours with more than 2-3 people, but I enjoyed it here and will be back. read more
