Went to an event in dtla and found this jewel of a place. First, we were surprised with happy hour prices on a Saturday night. Had a couple of flat breads but the star were the escargot! Garcons is a cute, warm French cafe that has a great happy hour from 4-7 daily. We came on a Saturday and was able to get seated quickly as only the lounge area had customers. They had a lengthy wine list and HH meant wines were $4 off (cocktails $3 off beers $2 and apps $4). The wine I had was good and service was great. We also got the cheese board which was a nice shareable. They also brought warm baguette that you can get more of. Would definitely come back for HH! read more

This is such a great neighborhood place to sit with friends, eat some good food and sip something delicious. I met up with a gf for a catch up and was recommended the yummy cheesy pizza, listen it's not a NYC pie at all so clear your mind and judgement and enjoy it because it is so full of flavor, I felt like I could the whole thing... but I took the rest home instead. Had the oddest interaction yesterday 10.12.24 when I stumbled upon this place during an event called Broadway night lights - which was exceptional! I'm surveying places to take my friend when he comes to visit. Decided to sample some cocktails and maybe an appetizer. However, I didn't get to because the workers, the owner, whoever, were so evasive. I had on sweats, a hat and a shirt. Didn't look disheveled. Therea were two entrances. I went to the side that had the bar because I saw an older gentleman who was dressed similarly. Before walking in, a Hispanic worker saw me and I asked him if it was OK to enter with the way I'm dressed because some establishments have strict dress codes. I wanted to adhere, even if this establishment is in the middle of a strip mall on a street overrun with homeless but I digress. He told me that he didn't know and that I had to ask the owner. There was a slim white? bald man on the shorter side of 5'7" who obviously heard the conversation a because it was only us 3 around, no noise and he was within an arms length distance. I assumed he was the owner because the Hispanic guy kept chanting "ask the owner". I even asked if he was the owner and he said nothing. It was perplexing. If it was Halloween already I would've thought it was part of the act but it's not. A reasonable worker would have asked if I needed help. He a just kept trying to avoid eye contact and grimaced when the Hispanic man kept telling repeating that I had to talk to the owner. I don't want to be presumptive but I felt there could've been some underlying tones. As a black woman, I don't want to bring race into, so I'll just leave it here, but that was for sure an uncomfortable situation. I just left. I'll tell my friend about this place and I'll never return. read more

Had Garçons de Cafe bookmarked for months and wish I had visited sooner! This cozy wine bar is tucked away inside a mall-like building (same area as Guisados and Ricebox) in the heart of DTLA. We usually make it in time for happy hour which is 5-7pm daily, even weekends! All the wines we've tried have been great (we love the cab franc) and at the happy hour price, a great value. They also nicely complement the adorable mixed charcuterie board that comes with 3 cheeses, 3 cured meats, and assorted accompaniments. The baguette is also excellent which I've recently learned is from Clark St Bakery. We've also tried the pate and smoked salmon crostinis, which are tasty as well. Every time I come here I feel like I've been transported back to France and it makes me SO happy. Mathieu is such a great host and we love coming to support! What a little cozy place for some wine, snack, and good company. First of all, the decor and ambience is 100%. It feels like you're at a friend's apartment in Paris, it's relaxing and not uptight. Service is great and chill. We got some drinks and a truffle pizza to share. I ordered So Flute, which was very yummy. I highly recommend Garcons de Cafe! The ambience and setting allows for very intimate get togethers. Also, if you are feeling fancy! They have both Pâté de Campagne and Foie Gras Terrine. The foie gras terrine was very delicious and it paired very well with the red wine that we got. We came on a Wednesday night, with no reservations. We were able to walk in and be seated. Mathieu was very hospitable. Again, this is a good place for dates, catching up with friends, or even a nightcap. Garcons de Cafe is a really cool spot! We ended up walking here from the Flower District after having brunch at Poppy + Rose. Located in DTLA's Spring Arcade Building, it's in an area worth checking out, with lots of good food options in close proximity. The four of us really enjoyed the decor and ambience. Service was very friendly and helpful, as well. If you're in the area, I'd definitely recommend stopping in here for a drink. The wine was great! After all the bad press and dramatic images from the past week, we decided to come check out Downtown, and we are so happy we did! It's located inside this mall that dates back to the early 1900s I think and reminded me of some of the old malls you'd find in Europe. Sadly many of the restaurants looked closed, but the space is beautiful, and I can imagine how it would look if the other restaurants, cafes and maybe a jazz club or something else filled the vacant spots. But walking into the cafe, it felt like it may have been something that has been there since the building first opened, but not in a bad way. It was a cool mix of modern and early 1900s that just fit. The wine selection was very well curated, and the food was fantastic! They have a happy hour on Wednesdays, which seems like a good deal. The staff was all very friendly and professional. We just loved this place and will make plans to come back as often as possible. There's a lot about half a block away on Broadway that has a flat rate of $15 for the night. The only thing is that it seems the attendant leaves sometime between 5:30 and 6:30 (well, the attendant was there when we got there but no longer there when we left). Not sure if this is everyday, but the lot was closed when we got back which made us freak out a little, but there was a door with a Ring on it, and when we pressed the button, the person let us in. All in all, it was a great experience, and we look forward to finding other gems in Downtown LA. This is our city, and we gotta support all these great small businesses that are trying to make it into a livable neighborhood. read more

I've been wanting to come try Garçons de Cafe for the longest time but with Covid and all, I haven't been out much obviously even though from what I've seen on their social media, they've taken all the proper precautions among protocol, social distancing, etc. With that said, I finally placed an order last week for a bottle to have with my family for our small Thanksgiving dinner. I expected the order to ship, but come this past Tuesday, as I am literally taking out the trash, a handsome young gentleman arrives in a motorcycle to hand deliver the bottle of wine! I was so shocked and asked if he had come all the way from Downtown to which he replied yes as the bottle would not had arrived in time for the holiday and they wanted to make sure I had it. I was so taken aback by this amazing gesture that in my stupor, I didn't even offer him a bottle of water or a damn tip and for that I apologize!!! You come looking for an experience but walk away knowing that you will be back soon. The wine flights were my favorite there as you can sample wines from France that you can't get by walking into Whole Foods. A sommelier curates it, so you are experiencing life through his lens. Nested in the DTLA, please support Sofian and the others. This is the type of place that makes LA distinctly different than other cities. Also, the overall experience + wine are amazing. I am BLOWN AWAY by this place. I really didn't want to leave a review because I think the beauty of this place is how lowkey and un-busy it was even on a Saturday evening. If my Yelp ever gain traction, I might take this review down haha. First of all, Mathieu is great. I made a reservation accidentally for the day before I had intended, and I got a call to verify my reservation, and even though it was totally on me for not double checking, he kindly offered to move my reservation for the next day at the same time. The ambiance inside is lovely. It's dark and not a lot of seating so it feels very cozy and intimate. I came here for dinner with a friend, and I loved how we were able to enjoy our conversation over food without being interrupted by loud noises or other parties. We came specifically for the pop-up event with la.novia, and the food was so good. The pork belly taco, though pricey at $10 per taco, was one of the best tacos I've had. The pork belly was cooked so well; I'm still thinking about it a week later. They had this seabass dish as well, and I thought the lime curry was an interesting twist. The cauliflower paired nicely with the curry. Finally the tres leches was fluffy and light. It wasn't overbearingly sweet, which I always appreciate in a dessert. I'll make it a point to come back again whenever there's another pop-up that catches my eye. If you're into wine / wine bars, this is definitely a place you should try at least once, at least for the ambiance. read more

This is a charming place. A room within an atrium within a building...incredibly LA and quixotic. I loved it. Wine and delicious kippered snacks and good bread and on Wednesdays, live Jazz. A restaurateur neighbor and I found ourselves heading out around 9pm downtown. About two minutes into the evening, we realized that it was Chinatown ArtWalk, and as such, our initial destination would not be viable. So we quickly pivoted, and GdC was on his list. Somehow the parking gods were kind to us, and we found free (this exists) street parking a mere 100 feet from the shopping corridor (is that what you call this kind of arrangement) where GdC is situated. At first it seemed too chill and we almost didn't sit down--in retrospect, seeing that their tag line is 'your extended living room' makes sense--but we decided that one glass would be fine. One glass turned into several, and a very calm and relaxing evening. Guest chef Alejandro Bolar's tasting menu was brilliant. Poached salmon was absolutely perfect, the potato salad (gratis from chef) was smoky and textured, and the cherry tarte looked like the cover sleeve from an Italo Disco 12" and tasted about as sweet. Will keep this gem in the nearby and not too much work box for when a little more than your living room, a lot less than a scene is just the ticket. read more

I love this restaurant/bar. Since I've gone for brunch, then the odd night when the restaurant was closed, I've eaten in the bar. The charcuterie is perfect and interesting wines are offered. I'd like to try the restaurant and went there a couple weeks ago on a Sunday evening and they were closed. So was the bar. I think they need to update their hours here and on Google Maps. I seriously hope they're not going away because this is a real gem and perfect before evenings at a nearby theatre. read more

It's going on midnight -- my husband and I want to go out. We're in the mood to do something, but don't want the craziness of a bar. First world problems, I know... I've walked by this spot inside the striking Spring Arcade Building many times and have always wanted to try it out. Tonight was our night! It was exactly what we were looking for -- a place where you can watch the world pass by, lounge back in some cushioned chairs and chat with the friendly bartender (who was French or possibly an actor with a French accent! You really never know in LA). Feel free to try out their wide-range of French wines before making your pick. And of course, you can always do what my 'hubs' did -- sample 3 or 4 kinds of wines before eventually just ordering a glass of Champagne... Like I didn't think he'd order that from the very beginning! But I kept my mouth SHUT! Wines are reasonably priced at $8-$12 a glass.
