For years I have wanted to pave my 300' driveway and I put money aside to pay for it. I had trouble finding a company that would return my calls, keep appointments or provide a price so I was happy when Mike responded promptly and gave me a price. He worked around my schedule and everything was fine, until the day work was to start. He said he would arrive on Thursday June 13 to do prep work and even confirmed that morning, but no one showed up. The next day they arrived by 7:30 a.m. and began work. Things appeared to go smoothly until I noticed about 100' down the lane the asphalt was getting wider. When I said something to Mike's son, who was directing the job in Mike's absence, he didn't seem concerned but got one of the workers to attempt to push the extra 8" of asphalt back to the proper width. I'm not a paver but I knew that wouldn't work. By the time I convinced Mike there was a problem, it extended for more than 75'. He said it happened when the guide rail on one side of the paving machine moved but they had fixed that so the rest of the driveway would be the agreed 10' wide, not 10'8". Mike insisted I wouldn't notice it once the dirt was pushed back against the edge and the grass grew back. I was not convinced so he moved dirt to the edge of the driveway to prove his point but I could still see the 8" bulge in the side of the driveway. Ultimately the solution was to bring in a saw and cut the additional asphalt off the edge to make it straighter. But straight wasn't to be. Near the end of the driveway the paving suddenly veers several inches off to one side. When I pointed that out, Mike explained he had to swing out to get around the corner to the road. There is no corner. The lane is a straight shot from the house to the road. I never knew what he was talking about but apparently there was no way to fix it, especially since he didn't see a problem. But, even though hard to believe, the worst was yet to be. I couldn't drive on the lane for three days. The first person who drove up the lane asked what was wrong with it because it was so bumpy. I rode down the lane and agreed, it was bumpy. I expected it to be smooth. I rode around and drove on other paved driveways within a few miles, including one that is twice as wide and much longer than mine. All of them are smooth, even one that is probably 25 years old. I contacted Mike and asked why my driveway was so bumpy. He said he would send his foreman to look at it but "it sure was not bumpy when we left" and he asked if any delivery trucks or heavy truck had been down the driveway. There had been none but I still don't understand how any vehicle could cause this problem. Mike offered to cut sections out of the driveway and repave it then sealcoat the whole lane to attempt to hide the patch. Everyone agrees the patch won't be hidden and will only cause more problems. Fourteen days after the original paving, two workers came back with the roller and a torch to heat the pavement. They picked the spot they felt was the worst, heated the asphalt and rolled it. It didn't matter, there was no improvement. The problem extends to almost all of the 300'. Mike's response is that "all roads have some imperfections you can't drive on any road without having a dip or bump." Then he complained that he had to use more asphalt than planned and had to do more work than planned, none of which is my fault. He's the paver and he estimated the job, not me. On July 8, I contacted Mike again about the poor condition of my driveway and he brought the asphalt plant foreman to look at the driveway the next day. They talked about possible solutions and Mike said he would get back to me in a couple of days. I didn't hear from him. On August 17, I contacted him again. He said he'd had several people look at it but when I asked who had been here that my security cameras didn't record, he then said he'd called two larger paving companies for suggestions. I got another paver to look at the driveway. To be fair, there is plenty of asphalt and the driveway should hold up for many years. But it's bumpy and crooked, everyone who drives on it comments on it, even the UPS driver! The only way to fix the problem is to remove all the asphalt and start over, which is extremely expensive, and the 10% refund Mike sent me won't make it any better. I'm just stuck with this crooked, bumpy driveway. As another reviewer noted, Mike does more than pave. He does roofing and construction too. I should have kept looking for a paver who only does paving and I should have given more credence to the adage "Jack of all trades, master of none." read more
