After three and a half summers with my U-shaped Midea, I was suspecting it was nearing the end of its lifetime. He was helpful and knowledgeable about the unit, but more than anything he was able to advise me on the value of a replacement vs. the cost of servicing a window AC that wasn't built to last. Excellent, friendly service. The crew went out of their way to carry a new AC up 3 flights and bring down the old for recycles. Jules explained a lot of the issues regarding ACs (e.g. mold) and fire hazards. I didn't know they also deal with dryers; he taped the air vent for me to prevent any accidents. When sending a check for the correct amount that was requested, was informed that he was using a family member's business but he shouldn't be receiving checks at the office, and then I was given a random cellphone number to send a Zelle payment. Jules and Carl helped us replace our Friedrich Wallmaster. The existing unit was 3.5 years old and we did not expect for it to break so soon! Jules was very responsive, friendly and all around helpful at listening to our million questions by phone and by text! Jules never lost his cool and was very professional (and funny too)! Installed a brand new 24000 BTU Friedrich AC with a major MISSING PART. I called them and emailed them about this and they told me they were getting me the part - they never followed through and I had to call and email a million times. They lied to me about using the warranty and getting the part, and had me waiting for this for a whole year. I kept calling and emailing and after a year the AC broke because it didn't have this part. Now I'm left with a broken AC, missing part, and basically threw a couple of grand out the window. My four year old Frigidaire window AC was consistently giving me an error code with Frigidaire unable to give me a way of resolving the issue. I reached out to Mike's Air Conditioning to resolve the issue of whether to throw away the unit or repair it. Jules was kind enough to talk me through the issue and was able to offer me advice to put additional support under the unit to have it tilt more to assist in drainage. I like to do business with small companies where the owners take responsibility for the quality of the effort and outcome. I contacted Mike's AC initially because they fit that profile, and because my name is also Mike. My air conditioning split-system had previously been fouled up by another, larger company who did a poor job and overcharged me. Working with Jules and his tech was a welcome relief. They showed up promptly, took the time to listen to my descriptions of the problems we were having, and fixed them in an efficient and cost-effective manner. It proved a complicated job, and not inexpensive, but my system is working and that is worth the investment. They also cleared my dryer vent, which needed attention, Jules showed up in person and took responsibility to make sure everything came out right. He asked me to write a review, which is not something I like or normally do. However, these folks are exceptional, and worthy of every praise! read more

Upon first contact via telephone, Jules was very informative and clear about our options replacing an outdated unit in an unusual setting. He and Carl arrived on time and completed the job(removing the old unit and installing the new one) in a reasonable time with care and consideration toward our home. Due to previous work and an atypical situation, the area surrounding the unit will need minor aesthetic tweaking. This was not due to anything with their control and I appreciate that they did not fake it and go beyond their area of expertise. Contacted Jules Wednesday afternoon and had set up an appointment for deep cleaning dirty (mold ridden window unit) on Thursday evening (after work). I got a call that they were in the area a little earlier than expected and this turned out perfectly. Howard and Sean were very courteous, informative and kind. I could not ask for better service. Howard said, see you two hours and his timing was impeccable. They left my home clean, cool and comfortable. And in the New York City heatwave 92 degrees feeling like 100 in my home. Hire these guys! I called Mike's Air Conditioning and Installations yesterday and I was not at all impressed with Howard who answered the phone. He was rude and impatient on the phone from the moment he answered, as if he couldn't be bothered. This fact alone speaks volume about the kind of customer service a client will experience. In addition, their prices are beyond ridiculous, they want $195 per air conditioner installation. Instead, I went to my local Hardware store, Mazzone's on Court Street in Brooklyn, and asked them if they could recommend someone who can install air conditioners and they gave me the name of a reputable handyman service in the neighborhood who charges only $40 per AC unit under 8,000 BTU's, a little more for larger AC units. One additional caveat for anyone dealing with Mike's Air Conditioning service, they try to sell you air conditioners and when I told Howard I had my own already he sounded even less interested in providing the installation service. read more

AVOID AT ALL COST! Showed up late, were in and out of the house past midnight even though he came in a few days earlier to give us an estimate. (didn't he realize how long it was going to take?) They were not done by 1 am so we agreed that someone would come in the next day to finish up. HE NEVER SHOWED UP the next day and we had to call 2 days later for someone to come and finish the job. Turns out they messed up the whole job. Air conditioners are sticking out of the wall about 3 inches, one of the pieces of one of the air conditioners was broken and had to be replaced. I just discovered the "messages" tab on Yelp. And behold, a dated message from Mike's AC brought back the trauma of every encounter with this company. "Natalie L." wrote: "We are sorry you were so dissatisfied with our service. We receive positive reviews because we pride ourselves on our service and dedication to our customers. Sometimes during the hottest weeks in the summer an unfortunate scheduling problem does occur. As far as having 'real' reviews on Yelp, I can assure you that they are. I am just not quite sure why after the second day you didn't just call another company. There are other air conditioning service companies in the city of New York. In any case, I hope that your summer was a cool and pleasant one after all." It appears these "unfortunate scheduling problems" are so common they do not even warrant a proper apology. As in, your AC installation may take as long as the resurrection of Christ, but no one thinks this is a concern. I hope you don't lose your jobs waiting for your ACs to reappear from the dead, fellow Yelpers, for "on the second day" apparently you forgot the Mike's Bible of just finding another damn company already. Now, the reason some of the faithful continue to pray and hope for the miracle ... Ie., why I did not just "call another company": YOU HAD MY AIR CONDITIONERS IN STORAGE. As in, a hostage situation, during those hot weeks for which we keep air conditioners with you and pay you to return them. Lastly, as 90 percent of communication from this company proved to be a lie, assurance about valid Yelp reviews has an eerie ring. (There are currently 19 filtered five star reviews; you can come to your own conclusions.) Rude and unknowledgeable! Will not be working with this company. Called today regarding a specific model cost and installation and they were rude and uncooperative with information. I know the model I want and I've already calculated the BTU's needed for the space. Talked to Howard who constantly interrupted me and would not focus on a potential new customer long enough to understand what I was saying. When I asked for a written quote he said "my phones are ringing off the hook, ok?" and hung up on me. He didn't even know that the brand and model I wanted had the features I described! They won't return my calls & won't come out to look at the unit. I design homes for a living - these guys are a complete joke & if I had more time I'd take them to small claims. Our experience dealing with Mike's Air Conditioning was nothing short of horrendous. Before getting into the details, I will say that the actual quality of installation of the ACs was satisfactory. It was everything leading up to the installation and the circumstances surrounding it that led to this review. Here's what happened: (1) AC Broke While in Storage: The three-year-old AC that we stored with Mike's for the winter was working when they picked it up for storage, but somehow became in need of repair when it came time to return it to us. We were told that the cost to repair it would be more than the cost of a new unit, which of course, they would happy to sell to us. Ultimately, we were credited approximately $200 for the unit towards the new units we purchased from Mike's. (2) Did Not Listen or Respond to Needs: We wanted to install two new ACs into two smaller windows in our apartment. This was explained when they picked up our original AC last fall and then again in a number of subsequent phone calls to Mike's, but somehow we were repeatedly told that the best AC for our windows were units that actually would not fit the windows. We were also on the receiving end of a lot of "upselling" in terms of models and BTUs, and yet the up-sell models would not even work for the size windows we were using. Concerned that Mike's just wasn't getting it, we followed up with an email (at their suggestion) to Mike's with photos of the windows, the dimensions of the windows, and a photo and description of the electrical outlets for the ACs. We never heard back from Mike's in response to that email. After almost a week passed, we followed-up by phone and pressed whether their proposal would actually work for our windows, and it was as if we were starting from scratch with them. They seemed completely blindsided by everything we were discussing. It was during this conversation, however, that they seem to finally get the fact that their proposal had nothing to do with what we had been asking for -- and that they were unprepared to make a suggestion. In fact, we ended up telling them what kind of units would likely fit in the windows, and provided them with information on the most current models. It then took two further phone calls to get an estimate on price. We finally got our estimate of $1,700 +/-. (3) Scheduling Fiasco / Installation Late and Finally Completed at 10:00 pm: When trying to schedule the installation, we were given "tentative" dates and basically told that our neighborhood was really out of the way (Washington Heights) and that they do not work on weekends. A day or two before the "tentative" date, Mike's confirmed and provided a timeframe of about 3:00/4:00 pm to 6:00/7:00 pm (estimating a 3 hr hour custom installation). We told Mike's that the work really should not take place after 5:00 pm, and certainly could not start after 5:00 pm, because of our building's rules. We were told not to worry, and that they would call one hour before their expected arrival with a more precise ETA. At 4:00 pm, we had not heard from anyone. We called Mike's and were told that their guys were still at another job, and that they would maybe be at our apartment around 5:30 pm, depending on traffic. We said that would not work given our building's rules, and they suggested rescheduling. We were not about to start the "tentative date" process all over again -- given that we were already 2 weeks into this ridiculousness. They, however, wanted assurances from us that their guys could actually work when they got to our apartment because otherwise it would be waste of their time. We went ahead and got clearance from our buidling for the late work. At 6:00 pm, we began hearing from the guys coming to install the ACs. They were lost. They told us they weren't even sure whether they were in Manhattan. At about 6:15 pm, Mike's called to confirm that their guys had arrived. We told them that they had not arrived and that they were "lost." At this point, we also communicated our complete frustration with the process -- and amazingly, we were not offered anything but an apology. At 7:00 pm, the guys finally showed up with the ACs and begain installing them. The installation took three hours, as expected, and concluded at 10:00 pm. The installation was very loud and messy (including in the hallway of our building), and we found ourselves having to awkwardly apologize to our neighbors the next day for the incredible disruption. read more

Just came back from getting my air conditioner cleaned. Dropped it off yesterday morning, estimate was tomorrow morning, and true to form, I got a call this morning saying it was ready. I was given a range from about 175-200, but in total it cost me 75. They're located in Canarsie in an area that it somewhat industrial, but very easy to get to from Rockaway parkway via car. This company wayyyyyyyy overcharged me for the services actually needed. They were 5 hours late to our appointment during a day that was over 95 degrees. Over the phone, they made inappropriate comments to me and hit on me asking for a date after our visit to the point I had a friend accompany me at my apartment during the installation for my own safety and comfortability. It felt completely unprofessional. My deposit was already submitted so I felt forced to do business with them. They could not figure out how to do their own job to install and kept confusing me with other customers questioning if they had even talked to me. Instead of focusing on the task at hand, they focused their attention on Small talk and delaying the actual job. They scratched my brand new walls and stepped on valuable furniture to do the job. I would steer you away from use as much as possible. Especially for a young woman living in the city for an independent installation. Use a company who respects you and makes you feel safe. Mike's was great. I'd been looking for this kind of service for the last 6 years and I'm so happy to know they're around. Mike (I think?) gave me a free diagnosis over the phone to save the cost of a service call just for diagnosis. His guys came over later that night and installed my new wall-through unit in about 20 minutes. They know their stuff. They under-promise and over-deliver. They are very courteous and I'll use them again when the summer is over to clean my smaller window unit. It seems gratuitous to me to complain, as some other reviewers do, about the woman who answers the phone having a raspy voice and a cough. That's just petty. She was very nice to me, and had a lot of New York flavor. It's a family business and I don't care if they yell to each other on the phone. read more

I scheduled an appointment several days in advance for air conditioner installation and was told I would receive a call the day before confirming the appointment. When I had not heard from them by 6:00 p.m. the day before I called them and was told by the person answering the phone that he was busy and would call me back in a few minutes. After not hearing from him for two hours, I called back and the same guy answered and he didn't seem too concerned that he had not called me back So I canceled my order. I don't know how they can stay in business with an idiot like that manning their phones. read more

I called them because of the reviews on yelp, but this time, no luck! When I called, the main guy (Mike, I guess) answered his phone. I told him I already have the a.c. in the apt. and that I just need it installed in a regular, double-hung window. He asked where I was and said they could come the next day after another job in my neighborhood and to expect his guys around 2:00 or 2:30. The estimate was $225 with the bracket which seemed a little steep but also included an extra charge for being in a 4th floor walk-up -- even though they didn't have to carry the a.c. up! When I questioned the extra charge he said something about his guys having asthma and carrying a lot of tools. Well, it was really hot and he had great reviews, so I said "ok" and also assured him his guys would get a good tip. The next day, I left work early and sat waiting for his guys until 3:00 before I called. That was the beginning of a whole afternoon of waiting, being put on hold, being brushed off and outright being avoided. All I wanted to know was if they were coming or not and I never got a response. And they never showed up. If they couldn't or didn't want to do it, I can handle that, but I never got a response and wasted my day (and pay at work) waiting around. I would definitely not recommend Mike's. However, I would recommend installing your own a.c. which is what I ended up doing. And I only used a hand drill, a wrench and a screwdriver which is not so many tools and it took a lot less time than waiting for Mike's. read more

They left my (fairly new, previously perfectly working) machine broken, and after ten phone calls, have failed to come fix it. After much run-around, I finally secured a solid appointment, only to be completely stood up. Every time I've called, I've heard "Um, yeah, I'm sending a guy over, I'll call you right back." Then nothing. Steer clear of this sham operation. They do not care about you or your appliances. read more

Had mike's clean my air conditioner in november, tried to turn it on around 3weeks ago and it did not work. My wife said when they first delivered it they turned it on and the ac did not work, they tinkered with it and got it to work. I tried calling them 5 times each time they said they would call me at the beginning of the week to schedule something. They never called. The last time they said they would bring a replacement 12000 BTU air conditioner with them. I asked how much it would be, they told me it would cost $620 minus $75 for what I already paid. I paid them $238 to clean a 3year old ac unit. This place it a scam. They have the worst company in the world. They returned my AC unit not wanting to follow up and don't live up to what they say. They are an absolutely horrible business and I will never use them. read more

Avoid Mikes or prepare yourself for major headaches! Mikes cleaned and stored 3 of my ACs this winter and when they were returned NONE OF THEM WORKED--and i paid them $776 for this "service". It took many phone calls with various people for them to replace 2 of them with new units--i'm still waiting for the 3rd which they are hopefully repairing. However, of the two new ones (5000 BTU LG models available at Home Depot for $100), one of them is so noisey, its unusable. They were hours late for installation appts and the work was sloppy-- there's gunk all over my windowsills and the screws on the bars are only half in. I dread calling them to tell them about the noisey one because it means trying to schedule an appt which is an ordeal in itself. If my experience is typical, I don't know how how they continue to do business. I'm amazed by the positive reviews for Mike's. My experience has been expensive and highly stressful. read more
