Called 3 times for an appointment. Never showed up once. We were home the whole day waiting for them. They claimed they were there. After calling we asked if the guy rang the doorbell and he said "no." Who does that? I don't think the guy was there. We ended up going with someone else who responded right away. I recently had a horrific experience with a local Greenpoint electronic store, where I paid top dollar for a AC window unit and install. Bottom line, they ripped me off on both. I reached out to the Frenchmen & Son initially for a diagnostic test to submit to the manufacturer for a replacement of a 1 week old unit. The gentleman Glenn that came out was prompt, efficient and incredibly kind. He was shocked by what he saw that I was left with and got me the documentation I needed. Once I received the replacement unit, I immediately reached back out to The Frenchmen & Son for information on having them uninstall and reinstall the new unit. Dawn in the office is exceptional and she not only remembered my situation, but was quick to provide a solution, appointment and pricing the same day. Within the same week, I had two different gentlemen come out... again prompt & efficient to uninstall and install the new unit. They were in and out within the hour, did a professional job problem solving the exact size of the unit and my window and provided answers to all of my questions. Moving in to a new place in Williamsburg and I'm hustling to buy an air conditioner and get it installed before June heat hits. I reach out to a few of those guys with 200 five star reviews on Yelp, but before they can get back to me I see "Frenchman" with 3 reviews. I remember that Frenchman is the company that installed my AC in my Manhattan apt. Funny coincidence? Nope, turns out the guy is the son and inheritor of the business founder and he's still installing ACs in Manhattan and Brooklyn. I tell him my situation and he promises me an AC installed within 2 days, and so it is. His office is pretty low-rent looking on the outside, it doesn't even qualify as a storefront, but don't let that put you off. They did what I needed at a fair price. Glen got me a good deal on a brand new Friedrich AC and the two guys who installed it did a fast solid job. Highly recommended. Btw, those other guys? One was too busy and two others got back to me with emailed quotes that were significantly more than Frenchman. Uh uh, nice try guys. read more

During the night our air conditioner started making a screeching sound. We turned it on and off but the sound continued. Early in the morning, a Thursday, I called Frenchmen & Son and reached Dawn. I was panicked since it was going to be a very hot weekend, our apartment was going on the market and our broker was holding an open house on Sunday. In describing the sound (and even holding the phone up to the unit) Dawn and her boss were able to tell that it was not just the fan belt and that given the age of the machine we would need a new unit. I explained my need to have a unit in before Sunday. Dawn set about calling distributers, to find a comparable replacement unit (my Friedrich unit had been discontinued) called me back within an hour and was able to schedule the installation for the very next day - Friday! Used this company several years ago to clean my Fredrich A/C. They did a first rate job. The building had window repairs done to all windows and caused lots of dust and stuff to get inside the air conditioner. The unit came back in "like new" condition and it was about three years old at the time. Oh by the way the building paid for the cleaning and storage. read more

I left a message for them on Labor Day after my air conditioner stopped working. The next day, Tuesday, I got a call from Glen in the morning asking how he could help. I said I lived right up the street and he sent Oscar right away to check on it. It's an old through-the-wall Friedrich model and the gentlemen said he needed to bring it back to the shop to clean it and re-charge it as it hasn't been serviced in seven years. They kept in touch all day saying they are working on it and by 4 p.m. they had it back to me and my family, cleaned, fixed, and working better than ever for a price that was more than fair. I have been toyed with by many, many air conditioner "specialists" in this city for years when calling about my business and it's a welcome change to deal with professional people who do things the right way. I have known of the Frenchman for over 10 years since they had superb reviews on Angie's List at the time. I understand that the son has taken over for the father. I recently had a Friedrich in need of repairs. As I live on the first floor, I asked that the unit be steamed and have its fan repaired ASAP. The unit was returned on the 3rd day in the AM as Glen (the owner) worked on it until late the previous evening as soon as the new fan arrived. The removal and reinstall was done competently and the SS12K BTU works like a dream. They were wonderful to work with on all levels! What more is there to say. Thanks Glen and staff!! read more

Our Friedrich wall unit needed to be cleaned and The Frenchman steam cleaned it for us at an amazing price. They (luckily) were able to get our ac back to us within one day! A real blessing in this August heat, as the steam clean service can normally take 2-3 days. The gentlemen that re-installed it put it back better than before! The original instal was wobbly and not level, and now our unit fits perfectly. The AC looks new, and it's working better than ever. Highly recommend this company and if I have any other AC issues moving forward I will not hesitate to call them again. read more

Dawn was super nice, patient, and helpful when I called to find out whether I should try to repair my 20 yr old until, or replace it. Glen and Junior who came to remove the old unit, and install the new one I purchased from them, were friendly and fast. The price was better than both another independent authorized dealer (with horrible Yelp reviews), and a big chain store. The company's helpfulness is almost a throwback to another time. Every year, they install our window a/c in the Spring (quickly), remove it in Fall (or whenever you call), and store and service it for the winter. Because of crazy mold....then bought them back and we were in business...then yesterday one of the stopped working...I called them immediately and they came, checked it out, replaced a part for free! 2015 I bought a airconditioner from the Frenchmen I paid 1350 for it. it lost Freon in 2017 I called Frenchmen 3 times got the run around I got a call from district manger from frederich after I wrote to the better business bureau. I was givin a name north pole cooling ,very professional . was told they will be repaired it. its now 2118, all they did was put in Freon in 2017. no repair and no Freon again. I recently had a broken air conditioner and needed someone to come fix it. After calling the local company who had sold me the air conditioner three years before and being told they would have it fixed within two weeks, but then getting the runaround, I found Frenchmen & Son. Thank goodness! Frenchmen & Son couldn't have been easier to work with. They scheduled an appointment to come see the AC and, after diagnosing the problem, were able to quickly get me a replacement piece so that I once again had a working air conditioner. I must say that before getting in touch with Frenchmen & Son, I called a number of AC companies as I was desperate to get mine fixed, and had issues with all of them - except Frenchmen & Son. My only regret is that I didn't find them sooner. Having a broken AC in the midst of a hot summer makes you feel powerless, but that is not the case once you get in touch with Frenchmen & Son. read more

I have Friedrich air conditioners. It has been a misery for years to find a company that would do what it claimed, at a fair price (and for the New York market).Most (sorry) were not honest. I am currently suing two of them for horror stories. I called Glen and told him one of them: I asked a company to remove a non working thermostat from an SL series (19,000 BTU) that was over 25 years old. I had a Friedrich part to replace it. Brand new. He says he did what I asked and left (I am disabled and did not have time to go into other room to check). I noticed a burning smell from the machine. I called the fellow asking about it? He said "Yea". "I smelled that too". I asked if the machine was OK and he said sure and that it was coming from the outside. Some days later when it got warmer (the fan motor was tested before he came) the fan was turned on at its lowest speed, with the thermostat off. I noticed air coming from the vents beforehand. The machine made a thud sound after 2 seconds and the motor stopped, there was a burning smell and I turned it off. I told the repairman and he said he only did what I told him to do. I said this is the same smell and you didnt think to test it? Now the machine seized. No. It wasnt him. I asked Glen (Frenchman was his fathers company and he has been doing this for a lot of years) if he could do anything? I thought this was a good machine. He asked for the serial number and said parts will be difficult to get. And then there was labor. I have called for repair work before and not had mechanics come and check. They look and then call someone. Glen said he only sends a mechanic. In this case Oscar would come. The fee was $85 (a bargain from what I usually hear) and if they could fix it would be deducted. Two men come over the next day. Oscar said his associate was there only to help remove the unit if they would take it. He went to it. Looked at it. He pulled it out of the sleeve. Called me to look at the unit asking Mr. C., what do you see? I said I didnt know. He said do you see the fan? I said yes. Its on. He said yes and pointed to the front panel. All the buttons were off. He asked did someone do work on this machine before? I told him the thermostat was replaced. He said they miswired the unit and the fan (which we noticed before. The vent had air coming out of it) has been on at the lowest speed all this time. He mentioned there may be parts of the unit that are burned out and that could include the fan motor. He then asked what else do you see? Again, no clue. He asked if I saw any rust? No. He said this machine is over 25 years old, hanging out the window all this time and no rust. I would work on this machine. I asked what fee would I be looking at? He said depending on what is burned out, the labor would be about $250 (I was shocked). How long is turnaround? About 3 days. I said PLEASE take the unit. Glen calls me the next day and says the machine is ready and asks if they can deliver it tomorrow? I ask what the cost and what was replaced (and can I have the old parts)? The machine had a run capacitor, fan motor, thermostat burned out and had to be re wired. I asked if the unit was checked for anything else? He said the machine went through diagnosis and they were bad. I asked if he could do steam cleaning (usually expensive). Glen said we never work on a machine until after that is done. Total $325. The breakdown? Glen did not charge for the capacitor, or thermostat. The fan motor was $75 and the labor was $250 (the $85 visit was included, tax would be added and delivery included). It came the next day, on time. John tested the SL AND put ALL the screws (about 8) in (I find repair people say everything is OK, but when you check none of the screws are installed and dropped on the floor so they cant be found). I asked could I see the fins (and filter)? I go to reach for the grill and John says I can do it. The filter was one of those deluxe heavy foam ones. The fins? NONE were smashed in, were shiny and looked NEW. John said that was the steam cleaning. I asked (based on cost, how well this went and past experience), you guys didnt set me up, did you? Something else is going to happen, right? No, sir. There is nothing else to fix. You got a new air conditioner for $300. I thanked him and he said let us know if there is any problem. I called Glen and thanked him. He said its what we do and you've been through enough (based on what I told him of my experiences). Since using it over two weeks, I have called Glen twice just to say Thank you. Everything works like new. I could see him smiling on the other end. AND for $325 and 2 days (and in the summer). AND I have someone I can call if I need to, whom I trust for my other Friedrichs/Kuhl. Finally. I wouldnt have gone through writing this (sorry) long review, otherwise. read more
