OLD-school BBQ joints are my jam! When I moved to Texas, I expected to find tons of these hidden gems, but while there are plenty of delicious BBQ spots, most are slick, professionally designed establishments. This place, however, is almost too authentic--in the best way possible. The dining room doubles as storage, with stacks of takeout containers and cases of potatoes in plain sight, and let's just say the bathroom could use a deep clean (and some hot water). But hey, I'm not fussy--I came for the food! From my deep dive into Yelp, I knew the loaded potato was the must-order item, so that's exactly what I got, topped with brisket. Hubbs went for the two-meat plate, featuring the "meat of the day" (sausage) and ribs--mostly so we could sample it all. Morgan, the one-woman show running the place, recommended coleslaw and beans as sides, and both were excellent. That loaded potato? Absolute perfection, and their special sauce is indeed something special. The ribs were a bit on the salty side for me, but overall, we left happy and full. Best part? Mikes is a little neighborhood joint that stays busy with to-go orders, especially at lunch. The dining room isn't fancy but it does have a few booths and tables if you want to eat there. I tried the brisket and unfortunately it was a little dry, and there was still a thick fat layer left on it. The sauce helped although it's a thin, mustard-based sauce. Mike's is a hole in the wall, but sooooo good! I have the same thing everytime, so I don't try anything outside of baked potato and chopped beef sandwich....I rarely eat beef, but their texas toast is everything!! I make an exception maybe once or twice a year. And....the special sauce. Ask about the special sauce, you will want it shipped. I bumped into this place by way of a few friends! I would never have tried it on my own (the neighborhood alone will kind of catch you off guard, but it cones highly recommended by the troops). I miss real bbq like where I am from - Oklahoma has some of the best bbq - but Mike's reminds me of home. If you blink you will miss it.....But, on regular summer days - its perfect picnic food to grab on the way to summer series at Hillside Village. Mike supports the military and his place is a regular spot for troops. His sauce has even popped up on a few deployments. The reserve military base is located not far in Grand Prairie and even though lunch is served on base, getting some smoked food is the best! The food is quality. I have never been disappointed. Potatoes are huge and come off the grill fluffy and moist, filled with fixins (i.e. butter, cheese, sour cream - meat if you ask). read more

We found Mike's on the way to a concert. Mike is a friendly chap and has a great product. Staff and Mike were extremely accommodating. We had a loaded baked potato with smoked turkey and beef brisket. Mike's meats are smoked in an expensive Southern Pride smoker that uses both gas and wood. The end product is consistent and has a great flavor. Mike ships his barbecue sauce to customers on demand. Since it is hard to find good barbecue sauce in California we will take him up on this offer. Mike's is a family run business that loves their product and customers. It was good to see a Southern Pride smoker in use since we heard about this smoker in California. We recommend giving Mike's a try if you are in the area. read more

Incredible real deal BBQ. The sauce is to die for! I had the half chicken plate with baked beans, coleslaw, and fried cabbage. All was delicious and finished it all off with peach cobbler, the good kind with more crust that filling. Service was impeccable and I was able to speak to Mike direct to give him my compliments. Pricing is amazingly inexpensive. All that I ate and a sweet tea was around 10 bucks. He also gave me a couple of ribs to try out, tender fall off the bone done in a dry rub first. A very good "hole in the wall" barbecue experience for lunch. I ordered the half slab ribs with potato salad and green beans. The green beans were canned but flavored decently. I am not a frequent potato salad eater, so that was a risk for me. It was mustard based and ok, not my favorite but others may find it wonderful. This was my 1st time at Mike's and tried the 2 meat baked potatoe with chopped beef and sausage links. Well, I'm not gone go hard on 'em, but this potatoe was not what I expected. The problem for me was the sausage, which tasted like a cheap version of eckrich sausage. You know... the pork blend, not the beef blend. I was kinda expecting smoky Denmark or east texas hot link. Nope! Next, the shredded cheese was not melted. You know subpar cheese when u see it..it does not melt very well. So, there was an accumulation of cheese that just was not melting. The chopped beef had to carry the burden of the whole potatoe and its ingredients. Their price point was cheaper than most because I've paid $15 or $16 elsewhere and they truly came with all "the fixins". This one was missing chives and bacon bits. Now, the service was fast and friendly but the ingredients to the food were less than desirable. If I go back, it will be for a chopped beef sandwich only. read more

Very simply a great little hidden away hole in the wall Texas BBQ place. The kind that has some really nice unique qualities. Brought my nephew to Texas for the first time and had initiate him with some BBQ. Mike's was the perfect stop. He had a gigantic loaded baked potato with chopped brisket and I had the 2 meat plate with chopped brisket and sausage. The BBQ sauce was amazingly different! A great compliment to the already juicy meat. The staff was great and super friendly, Mike even came over to our table to ask where we were from and asked how we liked everything. Super nice guy. My nephew really enjoyed his brisket baked potato and almost polished off the entire thing. He's a pretty picky eater, so that's a testament to how good it was. We left with full bellies and a "meat coma"....and our clothes smelled like smoke/bbq the rest of the day. A solid reminder of a fantastic lunch. I am usually very picky with my BBQ, coming from Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and I have had BBQ from Pecan Lodge and Franklin's BBQ, many Food Channel famous places, but I personally liked this BBQ the best. So tender, and not fatty. It was really authentic and easy to eat. Mike and Morgan are also super friendly and generous. Price can't be beat and flavor of the BBQ sauce is sooooo good! The BBQ sauce was out of this world! And literally it was! Apparently NASA took it up into space and it's still currently up there. Perfect amount of tang and spice. The owner was nice enough to give me a few for togo with my leftovers. Owner and his daughter are awesome. We came close to closing time and they still accommodated us and let us hang out. The food was great. I hate having dry BBQ and this place did not disappoint. I got half lb of everything and half ran rack of ribs- only reason I had leftovers. Plus BYOB so we had a few beers. Visited Mike's today and was pleasantly surprised. There are so many joints in the area that just never seem to live up to expectation I was pleased that Mike's did. Fast, friendly service. Decent portions that won't break the bank and a seemingly endless supply of "regulars" Mike came off from behind the counter and we had quit a nice conversation, a conversation that centered around the sauce and there's a very good reason for that, it's some of the best I've EVER. had! The bbq here is fantastic! The sausage is very good! I tried the cheese sausage and the regular sausage. Both very juicy and hot (not spicy). I ordered the daily special for 6.99 and got the sausage, potato salad, Mo's French fries, and the toast! Awesome sea for a good portion of food. See the pic I posted :) The brisket wasn't the best in the world which is why I took one star off because I judge most bbq places by their brisket. The meat was a bit colder and chewy. So it wasn't the most delicious but it was fine. The owners were very nice and I really appreciate how kind they were. I could right a 10 page review about this place. But with increasing shorting attention spans I'll try to keep this short and sweet. BBQ sauce believe the hype, it's real. The meat doesn't need it but you'd be a fool to skip it. This is a true Texas bbq experience, its tiny the food is amazing and its a throw back to a forgotten era & a true gem of a spot. The smoker was opened up on my recent visit and it filled the room with the sweetest smoke smell ever. Your literally in the same room as the smoker. The customer service was great. The cleanliness was ok. It's a very old building with little to no updates. All of the meats were good. My family had a little sample of everything between us. The two things that left me disappointed were there pinto beans and green beans. The pinto beans fell flat with little to no spice or seasoning. The greens beans also were lacking. They were canned and, again, were unseasoned. There was no bacon, butter, or salt. They tasted like they were straight from the can and heated. If I had to judge on just the meats and customer service alone, they would have gotten 4-5 stars. read more

Brisket was about the worst I've ever had. No smoke ring and very tough to chew, even with the large amount of fat on each slice. Don't serve buns for sandwiches just bread which is not normal and a negative in my opinion. Only sauce they have is mustard and vinegar based and would be better if it was left for those in the Carolinas that know nothing of good BBQ. I asked them to make sure my order was correct before leaving but they were more interested in hurrying me out the door so they could get back to doing nothing.
