PALS!!! I have been a huge fan since their opening day in 2022 and it's about time that I finally…read morewrite about them! Part of the venerable Strathcona restaurant monopoly of The Next Act (the OG), Meat (the meaty one), Pip (the brunchy one), and Marlo (the taco one), Pals holds their own as the sandwich one. This five-restaurant stronghold wouldn't work if each and every one of them wasn't so dang good. But they are. Pals showed up on the scene after Pip moved across the street and there was enough room in the building to fit a delightful little sandwich shop in there as well. Pals to the left and Pip to the right - and one (beautiful) shared washroom downstairs for both. It's a pretty harmonious arrangement as far as I can tell! Pals might be a small little sandwich guy but it boasts a beautiful outdoor patio in the summertime that just about doubles the space. Named Favourite Handheld on the Edmonton Food Faves We Crave 2024 list and most recently awarded Best Sandwich 2025 in EDify Magazine, you'll also find them on the Worldwide Faves section of this very website. The interior is somewhat small but very bright and fresh. Casual light wood high-tops, counter seating, a few bench seats near the back, and the aforementioned patio. You'll also note pops of their signature yellow, especially on their unmistakable brick facade outside. The restaurant feels breezy and gives off a comfortable vibe that makes you want to "stop in to grab a quick sandwich." And maybe people-watch out the window for a few minutes. The staff is also super friendly which makes you feel like you're hanging out with your pals. (Ha! See what I did there?) Situated at a table on a Saturday evening, I was looking for the maximum Pals experience! Pals is all about the drinks and offers an impressive array of cocktails and beer, especially for such a small shop. The Winter Sangria sounded like a seasonally appropriate delight while their Caesar made with pepperoncini brine is an ideal compliment to their use of pepperoncini elsewhere on the menu. On this visit I opted for the Strathcona Sling (Gin, cherry liqueurs, orange & pineapple juice, bitters - $15.00) which not only sounded delicious but also might be the signature beverage of the entire neighbourhood. This drink sounds like it might be pretty sweet but I didn't find that about it. It's very refreshing and the grown-up flavours from the gin and bitters hold their own. What sounds like a kid's shirley temple actually tastes quite adult. This would absolutely be the quintessential patio beverage on a hot summer day during the Fringe - a cocktail that lives up to it's name. The Pals food menu is an extravaganza of sandwiches! There are fourteen different sandwiches in two categories; made hot or served fresh. There's usually a feature sandwich as well. Be prepared for sandwiches like you've never seen them before! But the snacks, soups, and salads are incredible as well and the quality certainly doesn't stop with the sandwiches alone. In an effort to dig into this part of the menu a bit more I thought it prudent to order the Soup & Salad Combo (Choice of soup & salad with house focaccia - $19.00). A great option if maybe you don't want a sandwich. Pals usually has two different soups and salads on the go so you're able to customize this dish with whatever combo you like. I chose the House Soup (dill pickle & spicy pepperoncini) and The Other House Salad (iceberg lettuce, tomato, green onion, blue cheese, bacon, buttermilk ranch). Let's start with the soup. How unique!! You've never tasted a zingy little bowl of soup like this before! I don't know about you, but I love a dill pickle soup very much (maybe it's my Eastern European ancestry) but the addition of pepperoncini totally changes the game. This soup packs a punch but in the most interesting and delicious way. And then the salad! I ordered this one because it sounded like a wedge salad (one of my favourites) without the wedge. A deconstructed wedge salad, if you will. And boy did it deliver! The flavours of tomato and bacon together are so classic and the generous chunks of crumbled blue cheese were perfection. I loved how well-dressed everything was - not a dry leaf in the house. A salad may sound like a boring thing to order but certainly not in this case. Let's not forget the focaccia which cannot be treated as an afterthought because it was incredible. This bread was impossibly light while still possessing the unctuous and oily quality that you want from a focaccia. The crust was impossibly crispy and dusted in salt. What a dream! Honestly, I know that you need to order a sandwich... But maybe you don't? I'm going to have an existential crisis about this. But yes, I obviously ordered a sandwich. This might be an unpopular opinion but I highly favour the "served fresh" sandwiches at Pals by a lot. The BLT is the best in the entire city, I swear. The Burrata is completely insane - I've never seen a stack of prosciutto so high.

I had ordered a wrap instead of a sandwich and thoroughly enjoyed it. Staff was lovely to accommodate me by removing some items off the predesigned list for the wrap due to diet restrictions. The wrap itself was burrito sized, so be prepared for leftovers if you're only slightly hungry. The cookie I had was massive and soft! Honestly with the bubbly, cookie and wrap it was a full sized meal for supper (for me). The extra Yelp bag of goodies was definitely an added YES surprise! Surprisingly they were quite delightful and aren't too expensive. I went around 12:30pm on a Wednesday and it was quite busy. The line went by quick. I tried the Holiday Turkey and my partner tried their Original 1762. The Holiday Turkey literally tasted like a holiday turkey in stuffing within cranberry sauce. I was pretty satisfied with how spot on the taste was and it made me feel like I was eating a Christmas meal. My partner enjoyed his Original 1762 roast beef sandwich. Both sandwiches were flavourful and warm. They give you an option to choose between whole wheat and white bread. We got the combo so it came with soup and a soft drink as well. They gave us an empty cup for the soft drinks and it was self serve at the counter. The chicken noodle soup was well made also. Overall I definitely recommend checking this place out if you haven't. The sandwiches were filling and worth the value.

I hadn't seen this…read moreplace before and the previous two ratings sounded quite positive so that's where today's lunch was coming from. It's located in Whitemud Crossing which is the same strip mall as the Public Library is located except Hungry Birds is on the opposite side as the library. There are two or three tables but this is clearly a takeout café. The owner greeted us as we arrived and then explained how the menu worked. There are noodle bowls, grilled wraps, soups and salads. We opted for the noodle bowls. He then asked what size (small, medium and large). Then we chose the vegetables and meat. I had the marinated beef and my wife had the chicken. We had a choice of two types of noodles to select from or rice. Finally he asks what kind of sauce and whether or not you want cheese on top; the cheese is an add on. We also ordered a bowl of Wicked Thai Soup. I was impressed that he put the soup into a pot to heat it up rather than just scooping it directly from the soup pot. This ensured that it was hot . Once we got home we found all of our orders were quite hot. More importantly we all agreed that the noodle bowls were delicious and for the most part, nutritious. This was my first visit to Hungry Birds but it won't be my last visit. I have no problem giving them four stars.

We happened to not be there on a Thursday, or a day that had a deal that called to us so we just ordered off of the menu. My husband decided on the classic smashburger which came with cheese, greens, tomatos and onions. He decided fries with this one. While I went with the beef dip and fries. Fifendekel is…read moreone of those places that has been around forever, to the point where you might not regularly think of them. But maybe you should. Sandwiches and pie are their literal bread and butter! The Edmonton Journal named Fifendekel the Best Sub/Sandwich Shop 2021 which goes to show that even though they've been around for 41 years, this sandwich shop is still doing something incredibly right. While I've eaten their catering at work meetings many times in the past, I'm not sure that I'd ever visited their actual location. I was happy to pop in on a Saturday afternoon for lunch! Speaking of locations, Fifendekel has four of them in the city - you can find them in practically every corner of town. However, I believe that their southside shop in Coronet Industrial is the oldest. Yes, it's a bit of a weird area filled with a bunch of warehouses, but it's surprising the amount of cool businesses that can be found in these types of areas. Not everyone can be located on the coolest street in town and you will certainly miss out if you don't venture off of the beaten path. The restaurant itself is large and spacious on the inside with many tables for seating. There's room for everyone! The casual room feels like it was updated recently with modern paint colours and art framed in fun primary-coloured frames. Because of the large space I did find the lighting a bit dark as there isn't much natural light toward the back of the restaurant. Approaching the counter, it becomes immediately apparent that this is where all of the magic is happening. One counter is dedicated to creating customized sandwiches while the opposite side is a gleaming showcase of pie slices. The staff working was quite young and while they got the job done effectively, I found that they didn't have any desire to answer questions and seemed inconvenienced by much else than staying on task. I was excited to order a sandwich because the sandwiches are the main thing! It had to be the Auto Bahn (A turkey, roast beef, and ham road trip - $9.99) for me because it felt the most special. As you can tell, there's an underlying German vibe at Fifendekel. I was first asked the type of bread that I wanted. Fifendekel offers; white, 60% wheat, multigrain, rye, gluten-free, and their in-store baked and hand sliced sunflower bread. Clearly the best choice is the housemade sunflower bread. They didn't have it. The person making my sandwich seemed annoyed that I even asked for it. So I settled for multigrain. Made right in front of me, I was able to choose and customize the exact toppings that I wanted on my sandwich, creating my own handheld masterpiece. There were quite a lot of choices and I selected mustard & mayo, tomato, lettuce, sprouts, pickles, and both cheddar and havarti cheese. It was a tall stack! I enjoyed this incredibly fresh sandwich very much. While they didn't have the bread that I wanted, the multigrain was lovely and soft. It seemed to have been baked recently and was a delightful container for the rest of the sandwich - not too crusty or dense. The deli meats were of high quality. Their roast beef is touted as Alberta's best and oven roasted. All of the vegetables were beautifully bright, lending themselves to a rainbow of freshness between bread slices. This was an excellent, well-made sandwich. It's what a sandwich is supposed to be. I would have liked if the sandwich came with a little side of chips or something, that would be a really nice touch. We were struggling with what to order for my son and no one suggested The Essentials sandwich, which is purposely made for kids. I only realized that this was an option later. The staff just didn't seem very engaged or interested in being helpful. Of course soups and salads are a main meal component at Fifendekel. A sandwich with a soup or a salad is basically the most classic lunch that there is. After some consideration I decided to try the Curry Pasta Salad ($4.15 for regular size) which was the feature salad for the day. It looked pretty good! This pasta salad was a delight! The creamy curry sauce was distinct and flavourful, coating every piece of pasta thoroughly. There were nice crisp vegetables throughout and the biggest surprise were the raisins! I did not expect to find raisins in this salad but I loved them. They added little bursts of sweetness which balanced beautifully with the sweetness from the curry. I know that people "don't like raisins in things" but in this case it was a success. I wanted to try the Dekeled Eggs, a mini ham and cheddar quiche but they didn't have any. The other very important aspect of Fifendekel is the pie. The whole thing is the pie! In fact, the restaurant started because they used to make ice cream and they wanted pie to go with the ice cream. Not the other way around! Today their menu boasts at least 16 different types of pie with various rotating feature pies al
