Mill City Running makes me happy. Every time I drive by I am reminded of the great people who work there, the awesome products, and the local flavor while bonding over races. After skirting the edges of this place for a while, I finally went in a couple weeks ago. They expertly checked my feet and helped me find shoes that will work perfectly. They were extremely patient and friendly while I tried on about a million pairs. I've tried a few different running stores before finding Mill City Running and I won't leave. Although the running gear is slightly more limited then other stores, the knowledge of the staff is outstanding. My wife has never been properly fitted for a pair of running shoes so we brought her in. The staff listened to her extensive foot history and brought out six or seven different pairs. They let her use the treadmill, run outside, and pretty much anything else that she wanted. They also use a tablet to video tape you on the treadmill and check out your running in slow motion. Everybody knows your name... and will do anything to help you run and enjoy the hell out of it. Owners Bekah and Jeff have the following philosophy (per their website): "We want to be a store that is inclusive to all, no matter your abilities, pace, or running/walking background." They live and breathe this philosophy by selling amazing shoes and standing by them. They want you out in the world and running! They sell quality clothing, nutrition, books and any other gear you might need. As if that wasn't enough, what makes this place extra special is their event schedule. Tuesday nights are beginner runs, Wednesday nights are regular runs and Friday mornings are Flapjack Fridays, a run followed by delicious pancakes. Other special events include beer runs with Fulton, yoga for runners, a monthly supported long run, book releases and so much more. They also have a running team, comprised of folks of all ability levels. The team is super supported and is reportedly one of the largest recreational teams in USA Track and Field. So cool! I joined the first year because I liked the jersey and am now hooked. It's a great way to motivate yourself and get social while running. I've never been disappointed with an experience at MCR. Best running shoe store around!! I've been looking for some new running shoes so I asked around and did some research and Mill City Running was a constant referral so I decided to make the trek and check it out. They were busy but the staff was so helpful and kind right off the bat! Even while I waited, they kept checking in on me since they were busy helping others first. When they got to me they asked me lots of questions and listened to my running concerns, scanned my feet in a super cool tool, and picked out 3 different running shoes for me. I tried them all on and was able to run/walk on the treadmill to get a feel for them. They felt my feet in them as well and gave me feedback, apparently I have been wearing the wrong size running shoe my whole life! Prices were also good! I am not a runner by any means, but got talked into doing a half marathon with a friend. I went in to find some new running shoes because mine were just not cutting it anymore. The down-to-earth staff provide great customer service. The store is located in an old storefront with a lot of natural light, brick walls, and hardwood floors, so it's missing that artificial & commercial quality common in many athletic shoe stores. I have wide and flat feet so finding shoes for running is extremely difficult for me. All shoes that I've tried so far are either too narrow or have little cushion and that causes sharp pain in my arches and achilles. Sarah was able to identify the problem right away and the first pair of shoes she brought out were significantly better than all of my previous shoes. I ended up purchasing them and now can run without any pain in my feet. For anymore with the same problem, the brooks ghost 10 were the shoes I had bought. +1 for being a local store :) read more

Not only do they have great staff and great running shoes, but their selection of other running gear, accessories, and nutrition is all top of the line stuff (even Patagonia!), and they stay very current on the latest gear trends that runners are wanting. Running shoes are not meant to be bought from Costcos and targets I realized after few runs with my old shoes. I did my fine grain research on the best places to get the customization for my feet and its Mill city every where I researched. And when I visited the store the experience was better than the reviews they are there. I spent an hour there and came out of the store with the best comfy shoes for my feet. Becky was beyond and above in understanding and figuring out my feet pressure points and helped me with the best fit. She narrowed it down to two kinds of shoes and she's ordering those extra pair just in case I might like them in exchange for them. I ordered a new pair of running shoes from Mill City Running and Andy at MCR discovered that the wrong size shoe was shipping to me. He reached out immediately to let me know what happened and offered a few options to resolve the issue and get new shoes in my hands right away. He even offered a $20 "sorry for the hassle" discount. I recently returned to running after having been unable to due to an injury. I made the mistake of buying a pair of shoes without expert consultation and I paid for it in fatigued achilles tendon and sore ankles. I stopped into Mill City Running and spoke with Ryan and Andrea, I'm glad I did. After a few brief questions they assessed my walking and running mechanics and selected several choices that would help with my fatigued achilles tendon and work with my body mechanics. I've been to the store a few times already to buy some comfy sweats for lounging, running gear for my fiancé, attended one group run (and then lost motivation to go back again - my fault, not theirs), and then finally decided it was time to get over myself and start running again. 5 years ago, I was in the middle of running the Chicago marathon and had to stop at mile 19 because of searing pain in my foot. I was later fitted with orthotics and never had the heart to run long distances again for fear of getting injured. Recently, I've been trying to get back into running gradually. One day I looked down at my feet and noticed my feet seemed to be turning outward (supinating), and I knew this was not right. Ironically, it took getting rejected from the TC 10 Mile lottery to get my grits going about doing a 10 mile. So I made myself go in yesterday for the staff to look at my gait and perhaps get new shoes. New runners: shoes are everything. Wrong shoes can totally mess up your gait and lead to major body issues down the road. Not worth it. Invest in the right shoes! So now my actual review about Mill City Running - they are tops with customer service. Yesterday I happen to be looking for new shoes, but even if you want to go in to say, buy K-tape, they are extremely helpful, don't hover around you, and are just plain happy to help their customers out. My long distance running days took place in Chicago, and if you wanted a gait analysis (i.e. they videotape you running and then you look at the video, then they look at shoes with you), it cost $70 bucks. At Mill City Running, they do it for free. I gave a short version of my injury history with Mishka. She suggested we videotape me running with my current shoes with orthotics, current shoes without orthotics, and then compare the two. Turns out, the orthotics and my stability shoe were overcorrecting my foot gait, and I was now supinating. She suggested some neutral shoes and then patiently waited as I tried them on - running on their treadmill, and she even let me run outside to go feed the meter! A side note: I had admitted I chose my new shoes based on color (I hate wearing ugly shoes), and I stated that I know one shouldn't choose shoes based on color. Mishka responded, "You should have the right shoes, but after that, color should be about 25% of your decision." Awesome. I've been to plenty of running stores, and I can't stand it when they try to sell you hideous shoes even if they are great for your feet. If you're spending more than $100 on shoes, they should be ones you like looking at. I spent more than an hour in the store, and time seemed to fly. I never felt rushed, never felt judged, and it was basically the kind of experience one should have but doesn't necessarily happen. When I went home, I signed up for a ten mile run and am beginning my training next week. I am excited to try my new shoes and eventually work up the nerve to run in their group runs (everyone is extremely nice there, btw - it's just my own neuroses about slowing down the group, which I'm sure they don't care about). Other pros: 1) They are dog-friendly, so bring your pooch! 2) They have cute performance gear (and all new hats being unveiled August 14th)! 3) They have a rewards program (spend $200, get $25 back) and a discount for students (10%). 4) They have group runs with friendly people. 5) They are an amazing addition to NE. read more

Brought pair of shoes to try on treadmill and record video to analyze my running motion and stride. Then she brought 5 other pairs of shoes to try. I found one that my feet fall in love :). All I can say is WOW!!!!! Came into the store knowing nothing about shoes...left feeling confident. So confident that I felt I was able to school the other shoes associates at other running stores :) (Well, at least I walked in knowing about my supination tendency). The atmosphere at Mill City Running is very positive. Being a new athlete, I felt a little intimidated going into a running store. But little did I know how amazing my experience was going to be. After paying the meter right outside the store, I walked into a bright cheerful and welcoming environment. I was greeted right away. The lady who helped me was fun,friendly, and knew her stuff! She asked me what I was training for and congratulated me on my first triathlon training season. She then had me do a few walking exercises to analyze how I walked. (I'm a full out supinator). Based on how I carried myself, she was able to bring out several styles and designs that fit my gait. She allowed me to try on a lot of shoes, and allowed me to walk around and run on the treadmill(#patient). The great thing was that the focus was never on the brand, but on the comfort of the shoe. She allowed me to experience each shoe for what it's worth. Ultimately, I had a great time and scored a great pair of shoes that will be super helpful during my training for the YWCA women's triathlon in August! It was sweet to have a patient and knowledgeable person work with me. I never felt pressured or intimidated, just encouraged to find the right fit. Overall, I left with a great experience, important knowledge, a new confidence, and an awesome pair of running shoes. I came here because of the great reviews on Yelp. I have a goal of running my 2nd marathon and needed to update my worn out old running shoes. I told the man helping me that I typically try different brands/styles, but end up with the exact same one I had before (Brooks Ghost). He was patient and had me try several brands, always checking for fit, and explaining the variation from my preferred brand. In the end, I chose the same exact brand/model (surprise, suprise!), but my size changed slightly. I also needed a new jogging bra and was happy to see they carried the Brooks Juno here. I had a great experience at Mill City Running. I have recently decided to take up running, and do a Couch to 5K training program. Because I've had injuries on my feet in the past, I didn't want to start without the proper shoes. Even though I have zero experience in running and was nervous about going to a specialty store as a total newbie, I worked up the nerve and headed to Mill City Running. I went in on a Friday in the early afternoon. Two other people were getting fitted for shoes, but Mishka came and helped me right away. She didn't blink an eye when I said I was brand new to running and immediately had me sit down so we could get started. She watched me walk in my socks to check my arch and walking style. From there we tried about 5 pairs of shoes, and she videoed me running outside in the first pair to check if I needed shoes with more correction or not (we watched it back in slow motion, very helpful and cool!). I appreciated that she videoed me outside after she asked if I had ever ran on a treadmill (I may have, but it would have been years ago). She wanted me to be comfortable running so we headed outside. I went outside with the remaining 4 pairs of shoes I tried and ran back and forth to get a true feel for each one. I found a very comfortable and affordable pair of shoes and am excited to get started in the running world. I will most definitely be frequenting Mill City Running in the future. The service was great (thanks to Mishka for the fitting and Sara who was super friendly at checkout) and their rewards program is amazing: $25 for every $200 you spend. For any other total newbies, don't be afraid to go to a specialty store like this. They will not judge you for being new to the sport, and will instead be super helpful and hopefully get you going injury-free! read more

I first stopped by on a busy night earlier this week to try on shoes, and I decided to come back later when it would be less busy. All of the staff that I had met the first night remembered my name! I went into Mill City Running last Saturday. I was greeted as soon as I walked in the door and Megan helped me right away. I showed her my old shoes and she watched me walk. Turns out I'd been buying the wrong shoes for years. I tried on around 8 pair of shoes and I loved that they let me take each pair for a quick jog down the block to get a feel for each pair. I'd been experiencing some shin and knee pain when running and I've always had issues with my arches hurting. I've been running in my new shoes for a week and it has made all the difference. Heather is absolutely amazing! I'm a new runner and had no idea where to start with shoes and cold weather gear, but knew my current shoes and gear were not cutting it. She was so patient and helpful, spending well over an hour helping me out! She answered more than a million of my questions, and was so patient. They are very knowledgable, and don't pressure you into buying anything you aren't 100% sold on. Everyone was very helpful and nice and I walked out with a pair of shoes that were a great fit for my running style (and not overpriced!) I would recommend this store to anyone looking to get a little more knowledge about proper footwear for running!
